On Respect - with Ashlee Howell
In light of what's transpired recently in Utah's Theatre Community, the Midvale Main Street Theatre Podcast felt the need to produce a special episode this week. Within the episode, Michael and Ashlee discuss topics related to the events regarding the Empress Theatre and their firing of Director Kate Ruefener. They discuss topics relevant to this decision, such as the emails in question and the policies behind them. They then use those emails as a basis to examine the entirety of Utah's Theatre Community, and the practices and policies that must change within it. They discuss the topics related to the theatre companies in the State, such as "Top Tier Talent", Pre-Casting, "Paying Your Dues", and Gender Inequality. They also discuss issues amongst actors, such as our dedication and attitude, growing as a performer, and how and when we should hold others accountable. We finally discuss ways in which we can move forward as a community.

Special thanks to Kate Ruefener, for not only helping with this episode, but for sharing her story with the community. The emails discussed can be found by going to:

Also a special thank you to David Sullivan, for letting his voice be heard and for help with this episode.
Mentioned in this episode was a Press Release sent out by the Empress Theatre. This release and the public apology released later have both been removed from Facebook. Let this fact set this thought: We cannot allow things like this to be swept under any rug. We need to contanstly and continually hold Theatres accountable, and forgive, but never forget.
