1706: Why Metabolic Health Matters So Much With 91-DIVOC
Could your metabolic health help protect you from the dreaded v word? We talk all about this in Episode 1706 of JIMMY RANTS on the LLVLC Show. “9 out of 10 people have some sort of vulnerability to sickness due to metabolic disease.” - Jimmy Moore In this episode of JIMMY RANTS on The LLVLC Show, I share an outstanding article penned by a ketogenic physician named Dr. Kristin Baier, MD from LowCarbMDSanDiego.com called “Metabolic Health In The Time Of [DIVOC].” She does an excellent job of shining a bright light on the failures of the mainstream medical community in dealing with chronic diseases related to metabolic syndrome and insulin resistance. Fixing these issues through nutrition and lifestyle changes is critical to helping patients who are desperate to be well returned to optimal health. It’s an inspiring article and we were happy to feature it in today’s episode. Kristin Baier, MD on Instagram

1704: New Study Suggests Making Personalized Keto Plans Based On Your Genetics
Could your genetics determine which keto plan will work best for you? We talk all about this in Episode 1704 of JIMMY RANTS on the LLVLC Show. “Just telling people to go keto is not enough. We need to know what kind of keto is going to work for that person.” -Jimmy Moore On today’s episode of JIMMY RANTS on The LLVLC Show, I share a newly published paper in the journal BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health by Dr. Lucia Aronica, Dr. Jeff Volek, Dr. Angela Poff (@angelapoff), and Dr. Dominic D’Agostino (@dominic.dagostino.kt) entitled “Genetic variants for personalised management of very low carbohydrate ketogenic diets” (LINK TO STUDY: Genetic variants for personalised management of very low carbohydrate ketogenic diets | BMJ Nutrition, Prevention & Health). They put out the call for clinicians and researchers to look more closely at individual patient genetics to determine the effectiveness of using a ketogenic diet therapy. With all the genetic testing at our disposal nowadays, this seems like a logical next step in creating an environment for people to be successful in their weight and health goals. This is hot off the presses and so important! ENJOY!

1702: Why Do People Think These Highly Processed Plant-Based “Meat” Products Are Healthy?
Have you tried any of the “fake meat” products? We talk all about them in Episode 1702 of JIMMY RANTS on the LLVLC Show. “How many people look at the plant-based burger and think it’s perfectly ‘clean’?” - Jimmy Moore The plant-based “meat” industry is having a moment right now with lots of positive publicity in the media and plenty of companies getting in on the action of making fake burgers, chicken nuggets, and sausage at the altar of vegan propaganda. Unfortunately, the attention has created a positive view of these products in the consumer Who falsely believes they are made from high-quality natural ingredients that are healthy to consume. Hoo boy! In this episode of JIMMY RANTS on The LLVLC Show, I read from a new story that includes a survey of people who eat this plant-based “meats” and their perception of what they are versus the reality. It demonstrates the immense power of all the negative studies and headlines about red meat giving a tainted picture of this real, whole food to the consumer while anything that is purported to be made of plants is viewed as positive. Learn all the shocking details of this survey along with my commentary about what it means in today’s episode.

1700: Low-Carb Keto Diets Raise Coronary Calcium? Whacked Study Claims It Does!
On today’s episode of JIMMY RANTS on The LLVLC Show, we take a look at a new “study” that makes a dubious connection between Keto and coronary calcium. “How can they say with a straight face that this is a low-carbohydrate diet? It’s not even close!” - JIMMY MOORE One of the major benefits of eating a low-carb diet are the incredible cardiovascular health improvements that happen as a result of restricting carbohydrate and increasing fat and protein. Lower triglycerides, lower blood sugar, lower blood insulin, lower inflammation, higher HDL cholesterol, reduced blood pressure, and more are the signs that you’re eating less carbs in your diet. But a new study from Chinese researchers is now claiming a low-carb diet, especially one consisting of animal-based fat and protein, Will lead to progression of coronary artery calcium (CAC). In this episode of JIMMY RANTS on The LLVLC Show, I read from the October 16, 2020 study published by Chinese researchers in the journal Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology entitled “Low-Carbohydrate Diet Score and Coronary Artery Calcium Progression.” They claim that the participants in the “low-carb“ cohort saw the greatest progression of CAC as compared to the moderate and higher carb cohorts. What do they consider low-carb—45-49% of total energy intake! Oh, I have so much to say about this very bad scientific study and you can hear all about it in today’s episode!

1696: New Research From Dr. David Ludwig Confirms Low-Carb Diet Increases Energy Expenditure
On today's episode of JIMMY RANTS on the LLVLC Show, Jimmy takes a deep dive into a new study by Dr. David Ludwig. “I’ve heard all my career that a low-carb diet is just another version of a low-calorie diet.” - Jimmy Moore When I first got into the nutritional health community, I remember hearing people who were advocating for the Atkins low-carb diet talking about it providing a metabolic advantage over other diets. What exactly was the advantage? There was an increased total energy expenditure (TEE)—the number of calories burned—of about 150-200 calories a day when you eat a carbohydrate-restricted diet. Flash forward to 2020, now we have a new meta-analysis research paper that confirms it. In this episode of JIMMY RANTS on The LLVLC Show, I read from a study conducted by Boston Children’s Hospital obesity researcher Dr. David Ludwig and his team published in the December 3, 2020 issue of The Journal of Nutrition. It’s a response paper to another meta-analysis that claimed low-carb diets decrease TEE. But the average duration of the low-carb diets in those studies used in that meta-analysis was just four days. So Dr. Ludwig reanalyzed the numbers while adding in some longer duration studies of low-carb diets on TEE. What he discovered in his research was an important factor for people attempting to eat low-carb on why they work. Get the full details about what was found in the study in today’s episode!

1695: Dr. Kristin Baier Has Major Concerns About Keto Influencers Who Mislead People
In Episode 1695 of The Livin’ La Vida Low-Carb Show Dr. Kristin Baier joins Jimmy to talk about the growing trend of ‘Keto Influencers’ and how they are affecting the community. “It really is rejuvenating for the medical provider to see patients actually get better and deprescribing medication.” - Dr. Kristin Baier, MD Dr. Kristin Baier (@doctoringketo) is double board-certified in Obesity Medicine and Family Medicine. She recently relocated to San Diego to serve patients through a non-traditional healthcare model with an emphasis on metabolic health. She specializes in weight loss management and associated co-morbidities through lifestyle and nutrition. Dr. Baier shared her story. “For many years, I battled debilitating daily migraines along with frequent painful flares from auto-immune disease. My daily medication regimen could rival someone five decades older. I had tried everything from a vegan diet to Paleo without much improvement in symptoms. Then I discovered the ketogenic diet and benefits of nutritional ketosis and within months my migraines regressed and constant joint pains resolved. I eventually tapered off of six medications and reclaimed my health. Now I strive to bring the same nutritional options to my patients when appropriate. “ In this interview, Jimmy chats with Dr. Kristin Baier, MD about the status of ketogenic diets in the medical world, what patients are most concerned about with keto, and her concerns about the challenging information shared online by shysters about ketosis that may not be true. It’s always good to pick the brain of a medical doctor who has been enlightened about low-carb nutrition.

1694: Coca-Cola Busted For Funding Health Conferences To Shift Blame Away From Sugar
On today’s episode of the LLVLC Show, Jimmy pulls back the curtain on a jaw-dropping report about Coca-Cola. “We already have an example of this with the tobacco companies back in the day.” - Jimmy Moore Most people who look at a research paper, attend a public health conference, or even hear recommendations from their own doctor assume that the information is scientific, accurate, and free from any outside influence. Unfortunately, the reality is that there is heavy influence from Big Pharma to Big Food that directly impacts your life because that gets trickled down to impact you eventually. And now we have a study that proves it. In this episode of JIMMY RANTS on The LLVLC Show, I read from a published study detailing correspondence between representatives from the Coca-Cola Company and various researchers across the United States offering financial incentives to make presentations blaming physical activity and personal responsibility in obesity. The researchers poured over 37,000 pages of e-mail documents obtained through a freedom of information act request. What they find is damning evidence that Coke heavily influenced the direction of public health policy despite stating the opposite in their public relations. Get the full details on what the researchers found along with my running commentary about it in today’s episode.

1692: Study claims eating an egg a day increases risk of diabetes?
On today’s episode of JIMMY RANTS on the LLVLC Show, we talk about a new study about eggs that baffles the mind. “Do you see how science can manipulate data to make it seem like it’s something that it’s not?” - Jimmy Moore Cholesterol Clarity on Amazon The incredible edible egg. It’s arguably the world’s most perfect food with exactly the amount of fat and protein your body needs to be healthy and strong. There are so many nutrients contained in eggs that it would be silly to think you would need to limit your consumption of them for any reason. But in this episode of JIMMY RANTS on The LLVLC Show, I read from a study published in the British Journal of Nutrition last month entitled “Higher egg consumption associated with increased risk of diabetes in Chinese adults – China Health and Nutrition Survey” that does exactly that! The researchers claim that eating just one egg a day will increase your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by 60 percent. I do a deep dive into this study and explain in great detail why this is very bad science with flawed conclusions. It’s something we see repeated often in observational studies like this and the results they share do a great disservice to the scientific community and the general public. Watch and see how you can spot this kind of science to help those who become convinced of the headlines.

1690: Researchers Promote The Low-Insulin-Method For Losing Weight
On today’s episode of JIMMY RANTS on the LLVLC Show, we talk about a new study that looks at low-insulin as a weight loss tool. “When you become insulin resistant, over time your body acts like it has its hands over its ears and stops listening to the signals sent.” - Jimmy Moore If you boil down the most popular diets over the past 20 years—Atkins, Protein Power, Zone, primal, Paleo, Whole30, keto, and carnivore—they all are about lowering inflammation, blood sugar, and insulin levels. So rather than identifying with any particular diet, why don’t we instead look at the end physiologic result? A September 2020 study does just that. German researchers from the Düsseldorf Catholic Hospital published their study entitled “Weight Reduction by the Low-Insulin Method—A Randomized Controlled Trial” in the September 30, 2020 issue of the journal Nutrients. On today’s episode of the LLVLC Show, Jessica Viker, BSN, RN, stops by to talk about the state of Critical Care Nursing. “We are not the same. Bioindividuality is REAL. What works for me won’t work for my mom or anyone else.” - Jessica Viker Registered Nurse Jessica Viker’s (@keto_nurse_jess) health journey started about 7 years ago, when she just didn’t feel well. As a nurse at a busy hospital, she knew what tired felt like, but this was a whole new level of exhausted. Her hair was falling out, her skin was dry, and she was perpetually cold. She had gained weight out of nowhere over the past 10 years, and not only could she not get it off, she kept gaining!
