The New President
The Trump administration has a dirty little secret: It’s not just planning to increase taxes on most Americans. The increase has already been signed, sealed and delivered, buried in the pages of the 2017 Tax Cuts and Jobs Act. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-last-cassette/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-last-cassette/support

President gone wild / everything you need to know about the debate
Mr. Trump refused to condemn white supremacists, instead blaming “the left wing” for violence in American cities even though — as Mr. Biden pointed out — his own F.B.I. director had said that “racially motivated violent extremism,” mostly from white supremacists, has made up a majority of domestic terrorism threats. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-last-cassette/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-last-cassette/support

Rest in Power Chadwick Boseman / china overtaking africa
Chadwick Boseman, known for his role as King T'Challa in Marvel's "Black Panther," has died after a four-year battle with cancer, according to a post on his twitter account.  The post said the actor, who also played Black icons such as James Brown, Thurgood Marshall and Jackie Robinson, died at home with his wife and family. Boseman was diagnosed with stage three colon cancer in 2016, and it progressed to stage four, the post said. He was 43 years old, according to The Associated Press. China is in Africa now not to advance Maoism, but to control its resources, people, and potential. From building railways in Kenya and roads in rural Ethiopia to running mines in the Congo, China has drastically changed the African economic landscape in the twentieth century. China lent nearly $125 billion to Africa between 2000 and 2006 and recently pledged $60 billion at the 2018 Forum on China-Africa Co-operation. The Chinese superficially appear to maintain a mutually beneficial relationship with Africa by providing financial and technical assistance to Africa’s pressing developmental needs. Trade between China and Africa has grown from $10 billion in 2000 to $190 billion by 2017. It is estimated that 12 percent of Africa industrial production, or $500 billion annually—nearly half of Africa’s internationally contracted construction market—is carried out by Chinese firms. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-last-cassette/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-last-cassette/support

Amber Guyger and the criminal justice system
A jury found ex-Dallas police officer Amber Guyger guilty of murder in the death of Botham Jean, her 26-year-old neighbor. Guyger fatally shot Botham in his own apartment, which she said she mistook for hers. Here's what we know about the case: The verdict: The jury deliberated less than 24 hours. The jury had two questions for the court this morning before they reached the verdict, according to attorneys for the Jean family. They asked for the definition of manslaughter and for additional information on the so-called castle doctrine — the legal notion that your home is your castle, and you have the right to use lethal force to defend your home and not retreat. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/the-last-cassette/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-last-cassette/support
