Pirate Radio (The Boat that Rocked)
We near the end of Marrr-ch, a month named for what else but pirate films, with a film that wrestles with a very different kind of pirate along with not even hanging "pirate" in its original British title: Pirate Radio (The Boat that Rocked). Movie Geeks United's Adam Long programs the episode and stops by to talk about indie comedies of the late 2000s and whether this film's use of music matches the subject material. Starring a whole raft of then-up-and-coming British comedians, it follows the exploits of Radio Rock, a pirate radio station situated on a boat in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. The boat broadcasts music 24 hours a day, which at the time wasn't the norm in the UK, and begins to draw the attention of stodgy government-types hellbent on stopping the party. It's a fun little romp that overstays its welcome by about twenty minutes. That Thing You Do!
Tom Hanksuary is in the books but we're still talking all the lovable American actor with his directorial debut and a possible entry into the perfect film club: That Thing You Do! Dark Destinations' Father Malone and On Seagal's Trevor Gumbel are here to talk all about a film that captures a time and place better than most legitimate biopics do. Starring Tom Hanks as a Phil Spector-inspired music producer, it follows the story of the Oneders, a band whose claim to fame is their titular song which carries them to fame, fortune, and everything that comes with being a successful one-hit wonder band. It's light, fun, and manages to pack a ton of heart into a breezy runtime. KCx80TVL: 80 for Brady
We kick off a limited crossover marathon with our friends over at 80's TV Ladies to coincide with their look at the Nine to Five TV show with an ensemble film that features two-thirds of 9 to 5's cast along with two more heavy-hitting actresses: 80 for Brady. 80's TV Ladies Sharon Johnson and Susan Lambert Hatem join the show to talk all about a film that's way better than it has any right to be. Starring Lily Tomlin, Jane Fonda, Sally Fields, and Rita Moreno, the four play a real-life group of women who bond over their shared love of Tom Brady and make it a point to be at the 2017 Super Bowl in Houston. From one mishap to another, it's a comedy in the vein of The Hangover but with more heart and a whole lot more Guy Fieri. Red State
We circle back in this bonus episode to more apocalyptic or apocalypse-adjacent content given the success of Knock at the Cabin and The Last of Us with a film that is unlike any other from its director: Red State. Wake Up Heavy's Mark Begley is subjected once again to a film that may define conventional genre labels but works in spite of that. Starring Michael Parks as a Fred Phelps-type pastor, it follows his family as they wreck havoc on the small Midwestern town they occupy, culiminating in a Waco-like assault on their compound. John Goodman and Melissa Leo are along for the ride in a film that doesn't feel like Kevin Smith directed it, but we're glad he did. Yellowbeard
We continue Marrr-ch, a month named for what else but pirate films, with another film whose reputation not only precedes it, but also is rightfully earned: Yellowbeard. Mondo Heather's Heather Drain and Dark Destination's Father Malone join the proceedings to determine how a movie with this many comedians can be this bracingly unfunny. Starring a veritable who's who of '70s and '80s comedians, both American and British, it follows the titular Yellowbeard (Graham Chapman) who must use the treasure map tattooed on his son's head to find his lost treasure. It's a film where there isn't enough of the good parts, which is any time Graham Chapman is on-screen; weird the film is titled Yellowbeard eh? KCxWUH: Knock at the Cabin (2023)
We take a trip to the old multiplex in this bonus episode with a look at M. Night Shyamalan's latest joint: a film adaptation of Paul Tremblay's Knock at the Cabin. Wake Up Heavy's Mark Begley programs the film and edits the episode on this very topical crossover that may send us down a rabbit hole or two... Starring an ensemble cast, it follows a gay couple and their daughter who go on a retreat to a cabin in the woods only to have their peaceful retreat interrupted by Dave Bautista and his very intense group of followers who have a proposition: sacrifice one of yourselves willingly and save the world. Hilarity ensues! For more episodes of the Kulturecast along with many more podcasts that are guaranteed to be your new favorite audio obsession, check out Weirding Way Media at weirdingwaymedia.com.

Roman Polanski's Pirates
We kick off Marrr-ch, a month named for what else but pirate films, with a film so reviled, so totally unworthy of your time, it's kinda shocking that we talked for over an hour about it: Roman Polanski's Pirates. Film professor Spencer Parsons and Scary Stories We Tell's Jess Byard stop by to talk about possibly the worst film this humble movie podcast has ever covered. Starring Walter Matthau, this bizarre little film is a take on the pirate adventure films of old with very little else in the way of plot, character development, or interesting diaglogue. As least its nice to look at., sort of. Bonfire of the Vanities
We end Tom Hanks-uary with an adaptation of Tom Wolfe's seminal '80s classic that ended up being one of the biggest bombs of all time: Bonfire of the Vanities. Movie critic Dustin Rutledge stops by to talk all about Hanks, the bizarre Bruce Willis performance, and that opening shot. Starring Hanks, Bruce Willis, and Melanie Griffith, it follows Hanks as Sherman McCoy, a man at the center of a controversy that's as '80s as it gets. It's one of movies that is such an immense failure, it needs to be seen to be understood. Forrest Gump
We near the end of Tom Hanks-uary with the film that features what will be shown at Tom Hanks' "In Memoriam": Forrest Gump. Wolf & Raisin's HP stops by to talk all about Hanks, his performance for the ages, and what it means that Bubba Gump Co is still open today. Starring Hanks in a role for the ages, he plays the slow Forrest Gump, a man who is every American of a certain generation's wet dream, who finds himself at the epicenter of many of the 20th century's biggest American moments. Mazes & Monsters
We continue Tom Hanks-uary with an early entry into the Hanks filmography: Mazes & Monsters. Dark Destination's Father Malone picks the film and stops by to talk all including some choice line delivery from Hanks himself. Starring Hanks, Chris Makepeace, and Wendy Crewson, the three play college students who are obsessed with a Dungeons & Dragons-esque game that soon takes over their entire lives. It sounds way more interesting than it is outside of Hanks having blood on his hands! Volunteers
We continue Tom Hanks-uary with a film that features Hanks playing someone who's immensely unlikable: Volunteers. The Hollywood Outsider's Aaron Peterson stops by to talk all about Hanks, Candy, and everything else wrong with this strange little comedy. Starring Hanks, John Candy, and Rita Wilson, the three join the Peace Corps and head to Thailand for fun, fellowship, and some light heroin smuggling. It's a weird premise and an even stranger film in execution. Big
We continue Tom Hanks-uary with an early entry into the actor's growing list of serious-leaning roles that show is ability to balance comedy and drama: Big. DC Titan's Richard Hatem picks the film and stops by to talk all about it including why it may be an entry into the "perfect film club". Starring Hanks, Elizabeth Perkins, John Heard, and Robert Loggia, it follows Hanks as a thirteen year old boy who wishes to be big, and gets his wish. Little does he realize what that will mean for him, his family, and the man he has become. The 'Burbs
We kick off Tom Hanks-uary with an early entry into the beloved actor's career when he was known more for comedy and less for baiting all those Academy Award nominations playing real people: The 'Burbs. Mondo Heather's Heather Drain and Dark Destination's Father Malone stop by to talk all about what may be both of their favorite films in Hanks' expansive filmography. Starring Hanks, Rick Ducommon, and Bruce Dern, the film follows the three suburban neighbors who live on cul-de-sac and are convinced their newest move-ins are up to no good and may have even murdered a fellow neighbor. It's a film that overcomes it's disappointingly upbeat ending to offer a truly interesting take on the idea of the suburban hellscape. Pushpaka Vimana
We continue Indian Cinema Month, this year to coincide with launch of the Bollywood Cinema Club, our first all Indian cinema biweekly podcast, with an Indian cinema film that doesn't require any translation whatsoever, the critically acclaimed silent film Pushpaka Vimana. DC Titan's Richard Hatem joins Chris to talk all about the film that doesn't do nearly as much with its niche premise as it could. Starring Kamal Hassan once again, he plays a down on his luck graduate student, shades of Moondram Pirai, as he switches places with a businessman who happens to be staying a luxury hotel. This leads to series of unfortuntate events in the vein of After Hours or other "man about town" films that lead to our hero bumbling from one wild mishap to another. Moondram Pirai
We continue Indian Cinema Month, this year to coincide with launch of the Bollywood Cinema Club, our first all Indian cinema biweekly podcast, with a Tamil-language film that begs the question: if a man is interested in a woman with amnesia who thinks, talks, and sounds like a child, is he a creep? The Projection Booth's Mike White stops by to help answer that question and more with a look at 1982's Moondram Pirai. Starring Kamal Hassan as the aforementioned man and Sridevi as the aforementioned woman, it's an interesting take on the romantic drama that pulls no punches and gives the characters exactly what they deserve, and then some. The film was remade the next year with mostly the same actors in Hindi but suffers subtitle issues on Prime Video version; we don't get it either. The Menu
We take another break from Indian Cinema Month to check out a black comedy horror takedown of the haute-cuisine world of Alinea and Noma: The Menu. Taking place at Hawthorn, an exclusive restaurant on an island, the film follows the staff and guests through a tasting menu unlike anything they've ever experienced. Know as little as possible going in and, if you're a fan of Chef's Table, your culinary itch is guaranteed to be scratched. DC Titan's Richard Hatem and '80s TV Ladies Susan Lambert Hatem join Chris to talk about the film, the biting satire, and whether the film goes far enough with the concept. PK
We continue Indian Cinema Month, this year to coincide with launch of the Bollywood Cinema Club, our first all Indian cinema biweekly podcast, with a film that features Aamir Khan doing his best E.T. impersonation: PK. Starring the aforementioned Khan, he plays the titular PK who lands on Earth only to have the remote control that calls his spaceship stolen off his naked body. This sends PK on a journey to get home but also discover the true meaning of religion and what it means to be human. Scary Stories We Tell's Jess Byard join Chris to talk about Aamir Khan, his childlike wonderment, and the naive take on religion the film ascribes to. Skinamarink
We take a break from Indian Cinema Month to take a look at a lo-fi horror film that took 2022 social media by storm: Skinamarink. Focused on two children whose dad disappears on the same evening the doors and windows in their house suddenly vanish as well. It's one of the most exciting, unsettling, bizarre, obtuse, and atmospheric horror films of the last decade; the less you know going in, the better! Critic Dustin Rutledge joins Chris to talk about the film, the '90s vibes, and some of the overt symbolism throughout. Muthu

Starring superstar Rajnikanth as the titular Muthu, it follows him as he is tasked with babysitting his boss' fiancee which causes him to learn the truth about his entire life. It's a story that's Shakespearean in scope but also happens to feature Hong Kong-style action, musical numbers, and a chariot chase for the ages. The Projection Booth's Mike White and Mondo Heather's Heather Drain join Chris to talk about Rajnikanth, his expansive career, and that wild chariot chase scene. The Awakening
We end Universal Monsters Abroad, a month where we look at movies featuring the classic monsters that aren't made by Universal, with one of the most disappointing films ever watched for this podcast: The Awakening. Starring Charlton Heston as an obsessed Egyptologist who finds the tomb of a cursed ancient Egyptian queen that may be trying to come back to life. It sounds way more entertaining than it ends up being; it is genuinely one of the most infuriating, confusing films we've come across. Flick Attack's Rod Lott joins Chris to talk all about the film, Charlton Heston's performance, and its connection to Remington Steele.
