Christa and Johnny talk about how she was selected from more than 11,000 applicants to become the first teacher in space. She discusses her plans to teach lessons aboard the Space Shuttle and conduct experiments and demonstrate to the world the wonders of space. Six months after this episode aired, tragically, the Space Shuttle Challenger broke apart upon take off and McAuliffe and her fellow astronauts perished in the disaster. In her honor there are over 40 schools named after Chista. This teacher's true love of space and education truly made her our first civilian astronaut.
