Jerry Hyde & Fabrice Florent. Histoires De Mecs.
This episode was originally released on paris based podcaster Fabrice Florent's Histoires De Mecs show, and he was kind enough to let me to share it here.He describes Histoires de Mecs (formerly The Boys Club) as a podcast that "questions today's guys about what it's like to be a guy on a daily basis and questions their definition of masculinity." And so that's where we go, with me in the hot seat for a change, looking at fathers, parenting, violence, anger, rites of passage, all washed down of course with large doses of plant medicine.I'm very grateful to Fabrice for having me on his show and if you're a French speaker I'd urge you to subscribe to his important podcast.Histoires De Mecs podcast.WebsiteInstagramTwitterTitle track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman. Sian O'Gorman - Musician and Composer. NYX
If you've listened to this show before you'll be familiar with Sian O'Gorman, for it is she that provides the angelic vocal talent for the theme tune, recorded in the back of the van that is her gypsy home somewhere in Norfolk.I first met Sian by chance 6 or 7 years ago when she asked my neighbour who the person was with the doormat with the words 'fuck off' printed on it. I never imagined that such a doormat could have such a profound effect on my life, and in the years that have passed she has become one of the most precious people in my life, collaborating on live music projects, composing the score for the film I made with Mai Hua (see Somme link attached) becoming part of my core team for my retreats in Nepal and mentoring my two daughters through her work at Spirit Horse. All of which should give you a taste of what a multi talented and extraordinary woman Sian O'Gorman is.Speaking from her native New Zealand we cover the now common theme for this show of plant medicine, Covid, creativity and how it is to be living without lockdown. And for the first time on this show, rather than dividing the conversation with short musical interludes, I've included full length tracks to share with you the wonder of this incredibly talented artist from her work with NYX and Ancient Baby People.NYX (@nyx.edc on facebook & insta) Deep England Album out 19.03.21 - single out 22 Feb: https://ffm.to/deepengland.oisNYX version of Somme : https://nyx-edc.bandcamp.com/album/sketches-demos-rehearsals-epAncient Baby People https://ancientbabypeople.bandcamp.com/album/ancient-baby-peopleTitle track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman. Brendan O'Byrne - 173rd Airborne Brigade Combat Team, Restrepo. Peaceful Warrior.
O’Byrne is standing at the corner of Ninth Avenue and 36th Street with a to-go cup in each hand and the hood of his sweatshirt pulled up. It’s six in the morning and very cold. He’s put on twenty pounds since I last saw him and could be a laborer waiting for the gate to open at the construction site across the street. Now that he’s out of the Army I’m supposed to call him Brendan, but I’m finding that almost impossible to do. We shake hands and he gives me one of the coffees and we go to get my car. The gash across his forehead is mostly healed, though I can still see where the stitches were. One of his front teeth is chipped and looks like a fang. He had a rough time when he got back to Italy; in some ways he was in more danger there than in combat. O’Byrne had been with Battle Company in the Korengal Valley, a small but extraordinarily violent slit in the foothills of the Hindu Kush mountains of eastern Afghanistan. He was just one soldier out of thirty but seemed to have a knack for putting words to the things that no one else really wanted to talk about.War - Sebastian JungerLike all of Sebastian Junger's work, he has a way of painting a picture of where we're going with simple, efficient eloquence, and never more so than this opening paragraph in his book War. I myself first met Brendan in New York City. He had driven more than 10 hours from his home in North Carolina to meet with me and attend the premier of a film I had made with Mai Hua about my men's work. That's the kind of thing Brendan will do for a stranger. With the boundless energy of a giant puppy, Brendan O'Byrne is full of nervous excitement, warmth, enthusiasm, laughter and love, behind which is a huge well of often painful life experience that gives him a profound wisdom and generosity of spirit.Featured in the Oscar nominated film Restrepo and its follow up Korengal, Brendan served 15 months in Afghanistan, and here he takes time to talk with me about his childhood, multi generational trauma, prison, addiction, PTSD and his time in the military. He's an exceptional, raw, brave, sensitive and wounded man who I believe has so much to offer the world and I've wanted to share his indomitable spirit with you since this podcast's conception. Bettrys Jones - Actor. Llareggub.
Hmmmm... how best to describe Welsh actress Bettrys Jones? Known for her work at Shakespeare's Globe, the National Theatre, the Young Vic and Kneehigh to name but a few with productions of Wise Children, Hamlet, The Little Match Girl,The Tin Drum, Life of Galileo, We Want You to Watch, Edward II and War Horse, the TV series Skins and too many radio dramas to mention.Funny, bright, witty, thoughtful, cheeky, mischievous, sensitive, intelligent and strong, she's highly talented, and one might say proudly Welsh. One of the things I've wanted to do with this platform is give a voice to people in industries that have been devastated by Covid, because no matter how much many of us are struggling mentally with the impact of the pandemic, there are a great many people who have lost their way of life, none more so than the acting community. And yet, Bettrys seems resolutely cheerful. But then - I've never heard her moan about anything. Give it a listen. Might make you smile.https://www.unitedagents.co.uk/bettrys-joneshttps://www.imdb.com/name/nm3308176/https://twitter.com/jettrysbones?lang=enhttps://alondon.net/interview-with-bettrys-jones/https://www.everymanplayhouse.com/whats-more/bettrys-joneshttps://theatreweekly.com/interview-bettrys-jones-on-the-cinema-screening-of-wise-children/Musical interludes by https://www.domcoyote.com/Title track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman. Shivam O'Brien - Tribal Chieftain of Spirit Horse. This Could Go Crazy...
Shivam O'Brien is more than a friend, he's a brother, and like many brothers, sometimes there are misunderstandings and this deeply personal episode was the first time we had spoken in about 2 years, so what you're invited to listen to is the two of us reconnecting with a lot of laughter and a few tears after a long period of silence.Shivam is like no one else I've ever met. A deeply spiritual man with a giant personality to match, he's both blessed and cursed with a chronic and incurable case of Obsessive Building Disorder which, for the last 30 years, he's channeled relentlessly into creating a tribal community called Spirit Horse, hidden away in an idyllic secret valley in Wales.A master of mostly forgotten ceremony and Pagan ritual, Shivam is a true creator of magic, mayhem and madness, and I'm proud to have collaborated with him on many adventures. I can honestly say that my relationship with him, his co-creator Erica Indra and the Spirit Horse community not only changed, but maybe even saved my life.An important and formative part of my children's upbringing, like any community or tribe Spirit Horse is not without its politics and flaws, but it's a mystical place where profound transformation can take place, and I feel blessed to have met this beautiful man and to have sat by the fire with him on many a long, stormy night. https://www.spirithorse.co.uk/https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qN_Xsm2xlIE&t=4s - Film portrait by Mai Huahttp://authenticself.co.uk/ - Shivam's Enlightenment Intensive websitehttps://www.instagram.com/spirithorse_uk/https://www.facebook.com/SpiritHorseUKTitle track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman. Claire Arrowsmith - Aid Worker. Another Chaotic Situation.
Claire Arrowsmith is my guest this week, raised in West Africa and Paris she was always destined to live outside of the box and in her role as an aid worker for the Red Cross she has spent time in North East Congo, Sudan, Syria and now Lebanon where she took time out to speak to me from Beirut.Last time I saw her was in Nepal where together we endured a massive 100 mph storm which spun me out but was just another day in the life of this humble, courageous and deeply caring woman. Her message that, whilst many of us may all be freaked out to various degrees by Covid and lockdown, for a great many people in the world the lack of freedom and the ever present threat of death and disease is the norm, and we forget our Western privilege at our peril. Mark Sanders - Art Dealer & Ayahuascaro. Pablo Picasso Was Never Called An Asshole.
Former arts editor and founding member of iconic 90's magazine Dazed & Confused, art curator, writer and consultant Mark Sanders played a key role in identifying the artistic revolution that was happening in London at the time and collaborated closely with Jake and Dinos Chapman, Barbara Kruger and Paul McCarthy. Here he takes time out to talk openly and frankly about his experiences with the sacred plant medicine Ayahuasca, fresh from a retreat in the UK this conversation was recorded just a few days after the two night ceremony. Mark has drunk Ayahuasca more than 20 times in Brazil, but this was his first time working with this amazing teacher outside of the jungle. If you're interested in exploring this powerful medicine, hopefully this discussion will inform you and either turn you on... Freny Pavri - Musician and Yoga Teacher. One Of Them Zoroastrians...
First show of the year and it's Freny Pavri, one of the most delightful, funny, intelligent, talented people I know, and in her own lovely way - quite bonkers.Freny, who's of Iranian descent and brought up in India and the UK, was raised in the Zoroastrian faith, of which I know very little other than so was Freddie Mercury, which hardly displays a depth of understanding of such an ancient religion. Some of the rituals that Freny describes are around menstruation and the tradition of strict confinement that was imposed on her as a teenager, and how she broke away from the Zoroastrianism and has since found her own path in life.Whilst I'm not a fan of organised religion, I absolutely recognise that people with some kind of faith benefit from their beliefs and practice, and I can't help thinking that the strict restrictions that Freny rebelled against have been part of forming her as such a free spirit. She's a very disciplined, gifted Indian classical musician and if you listen through you'll get to hear some of her exquisite playing, alongside which she's also a very talented yoga teacher - check out her website for Covid friendly affordable online sessions. Personally I don't think she charges enough and I'm going to have a word with her about that so give her a call before I get to her.Happier New Year! Aram Zarikian - Musician & Psychedelic Explorer. Ayahuasca Now.
Aram Zarikian is a musician and teacher of creative technology at the Royal Academy of Music. That in itself is enough to impress me.Aram has worked internationally as a live and studio musician with various bands, orchestras and musical and theatre productions, appearing on stages of all sizes, as well as on radio and television. He’s been employed in management and promotion, has collaborated with many talented stage crews and sound engineers, and has booked a whole host of world-class musicians. Aram also has experience in studio recording and production at the Los Angeles Music Academy, where he worked as an instructor. He's also taken quite a lot of Ayahuasca. It was at such a ceremony that he and I met about six years ago at a secret location in the UK and on other occasions since, and here we take some time to delve into our darker sides and share with you some of the insights we've been gifted with through our exploration of these sacred medicines.Website https://aramzarikian.com/Outro track and mid shows grooves by Aram ZarikianTitle track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.

Nadège Nguyen - Actor and Broadcaster. I'm Ready For My Close-Up...
Nadège Nguyen is an actress and presenter of the Threads Radio Show.I'd never met her before we met to record this episode. A friend of a friend of friends, I'd seen an Instagram post she’d made about her struggles with mental wellbeing and was really impressed by her raw, unfiltered courage and willingness to break the societal taboos that routinely keep people silent and ashamed when they reach breaking point. What unfolded was a really energetic two hour Saturday morning conversation that could have gone on all day. I'm uploading it here in its unedited form. A big part of the inspiration for creating this podcast was the awareness that as a therapist my reach is limited by the very essence of what I do - confidentiality. By choosing people who are willing to record and publish their stories and struggles it's my feeling that if just one listener is inspired or encouraged to speak out or make a change then it's all been worth it.This episode with Nadège tiptoes the line between podcast and therapy session in the most intimate way, exploring her mental break-through, multi generational family trauma and our different and similar relationship patterns, and whilst the Robert Crumb and Ma Anand Sheela episodes may appeal to a broader audience, to me this one is much more profound.Title track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.

John Williams - Author & Founder of The Ideas Lab. I Guess We're Not In Kansas Anymore...
Be daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary...Cecil Beaton famously said that and it's a clarion cry could be attributed to any one of my guests, and John Williams is no exception. A senior managing consultant at Deloitte he was set up for life until the day came when he could bare the beige existence no more and so fucked it all off, swapping the trappings of predictability for a life of freedom, risk and edgy creativity, swearing he would never work another conventional day as long as he drew breath. He now he runs the groundbreaking, job ruining, rule breaking The Ideas Lab which has helped thousands of people to break free from their commonplace existence to create their own successful businesses. Not content with just changing people's lives, John is also the best selling author of three books, translated into ten languages. His new book is 'Fuck Work Let's Play: Do what you love & get paid for it' which is business book of the month in WHSmith travel shops.John's and inspirational character who has faced and overcome many challenges in his lifetime and here he takes time to share his story and philosophical outlook in another raw and unguarded episode of the show. https://fworkletsplay.com/Title track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.

Robert Crumb - Artist. Genesis Of A Weirdo.
Robert Crumb is a counterculture legend. Now aged 77 he remains a prolific artist who has contributed to many of the seminal works of the underground comix movement in the 1960s, including Zap Comix, the East Village Other and Weirdo , creating characters such as Fritz the Cat and Mr. Natural and his cartoon strip Keep on Truckin' . In this episode he speaks openly about music, the 1960s San Francisco scene, his use of psychedelics and the ultimate backlash against his work that explored his own sexuality. I first came in contact with Robert Crumb a few years ago when he generously agreed to do the cover for my book, Play From Your Fucking Heart. I was so honoured that he did that and really quite surprised when he agreed to appear on this show because he doesn't usually do podcasts and I found him to be a funny, warm, open hearted brave and humble man, and as is often the case with my guests, I could have talked to him for hours.Wikipedia - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robert_CrumbWebsite - https://www.crumbproducts.com/Title track composed by Jerry Hyde and Nick Van Gelder, produced by Nick Van Gelder, keyboards by Kenny Dickenson, brass by Noel Langley, vocals by Sian O'Gorman.

Mark Woods - Artist and Sexual Abuse Survivor. A Remarkable Man.
Clive Hally taught art at Brynteg Comprehensive School in Bridgend, Wales for 36 years. During that time he sexually abused a great many pupils, one of whom was my friend Mark Woods who's courageous decision to go to the police lead to Hally finally being arrested at the age of 67.Mark, who is now 49, was a gifted and aspiring 15 year old artist when Hally first began abusing him , and the after effects of those traumatic experiences which went regularly on until he left school at 18 have defined his life ever since. His decision to break the silence took many painful years, and the frank and open way in which he describes his journey from the isolation that accompanies abuse to the reconnection with self, friends and family as he found his voice is profoundly moving. To me this is a very important episode - Mark's willingness to go public and share his testimony with the world is not only incredibly brave, it has the potential to inspire others to speak out against the scourge of sexual abuse that affects so many who are shamed and bullied into silence. If you know of anyone who has been through this kind of trauma, please share Mark's story with them. Three brilliant thinkers - Professor Stephen Hopgood, Professor of International Relations, SOAS, University of London, Mai Hua, French Vietnamese Feminist philosopher and film director, and Stephen Price, Broadcast Advisor and Consultant, Journalist and Author join me in the midst of political mayhem as the world waits to see the outcome of the 2020 US election.
