#069 - James Jirat Patradoon
In this episode, Shaun and I are joined by James Jirat Patradoon. James is a digital artist whose work is informed by a wealth of cultural references. His work is clean and graphic in production, exploring humanity’s depths and fractures and creating his own hyperreal infernal paradise. #068 - "Pace"
In this episode, Shaun and I discuss our the concept of ‘pace.’The modern world operates at a particular pace. It is something that we hardly ever take the time to think about and is what we collectively know as ‘normal.’ It’s a mode of operation where we never feel as if we have enough time and to slow down can be considered fatal. In this conversation we speak on our own experiences with pace, coming to realise that our natural operating rhythms can be vastly different to what is socially prescribed, and how the way we move through life can affect the quality of what we experience. #067 - Derryn Wong
In this episode, Shaun and I are joined by Derryn Wong. When he was younger, he harboured a lot of dark emotions. He was a shy and worried kid. As he grew older, he started to develop deeper feelings of anger and guilt and before he knew it, he was an adult full of resentment and insecurities. The world became a hunting ground for him to find happiness, love and validation. He ended up working in the TV industry for 14 years trying to prove that he was someone - but as work consumed his existence, he felt like he was losing any scope of why he was living anymore. This was when yoga attracted him. When he first started practicing yoga, it was purely about releasing physical tension. Though it has become much more than the physical practice for him now. For him, yoga is now about letting go of emotional stress and putting all his awareness on healing. It is about finding the YOGIC STATE of calm, peace, kindness and self-love. Yoga changed his life. After 5 years of practicing Ashtanga, Hatha & Vinyasa yoga styles, he left his job in 2019 for a year to focus on himself & is now certified with 200 hrs of International Yoga Alliance teacher training. His mission is to help men and women in need of releasing stress in order to find their interpretation of peace, strength, flexibility, happiness and maybe one day, bliss. #064 - "The Animus"
In this episode, Shaun and I discuss our thoughts on the ‘animus.’ Animus is a Latin word defined as “a usually prejudiced and often spiteful or malevolent ill will,” though this discussion was sparked by a social media post that described it as “the rage in your belly to change some shit that you think is wrong.“ We unpack our own personal approaches to how we feel we’d deal with such situations, and explore the reasonings and rationale behind these decisions. Throughout the conversation, we cover acting to represent one’s values, how dualistic thinking, ambition, and collective belief colour our decision making process, and the willingness to be uncomfortable to protect one’s truth. As a kid, horses showed him how to love and how to be a steward to the vulnerable. He turned professional at 13, and felt he knew exactly where his life was going. But as the years went on and the pressures to succeed and win increased, he found it hard to hold onto the reasons he started in the first place. He began to see what others in the horse business would do to win. He started to see what he did to win, and it weighed heavily on his conscience. After some very difficult introspection, he made the most difficult decision of his life, deciding to retire. After leaving the horse business, he parlayed his new skills into work as a Director of Content, working closely with CEOs to develop and execute media strategies. He loved it, but began to notice a familiar pattern – when faced with a choice between acquiring more power or elevating one’s values, people almost always chose to acquire more power. So, he gathered all of his life experience and skills in media, philosophy, horses and human nature, to develop Anima Equine - his unique method of personal development for horses and people. Through listening, meditation, groundwork, introspection and other modalities, he helps both horses and horse people to improve performance and connection. #060 - "Service"
In this episode, Shaun and I speak about the notion of ‘service.’ Like many things are in modern times, being of service is a concept that is often misunderstood and misused. We discuss the gravitation toward service that arises from a place that transcends any semblance of self-service, a pull that is less intellectually known than it is viscerally understood. We seem to live our lives in fulfilment of personal desires, but beneath these desires, we may get a glimpse of what life is truly about, if only we listen. Episode timestamps: (00:53) – The concept of service (2:53) – The current ‘image’ of service (4:20) – A lot of service is self-service (6:33) – Acceptable selfishness (7:36) – The purpose of your service (8:53) – Intention and the personal meaning of service (9:49) – The identity of the self (12:04) – Service is one things, and self is the other (13:38) – How did those things get there (in yourself)? #056 - "Knowing & Doing"
In this episode, Shaun and I discuss the notions of ‘knowing’ and ‘doing.’ One of my favourite quotes is by Morpheus from ‘The Matrix,’ when he said, “There is a difference between knowing the path, and walking the path.” We dive in depth as to what this means to each of us. We speak on how the factor of time influences the decisions that we make, and how our conscious action (or inaction) will determine the future that we experience. Ultimately, we are motivated by our beliefs and values which we feel our lives should embody, but until we are clear on what that represents, our actions are not directed from a foundation of clarity. Episode timestamps: 1:25 – “I know, I know…” 2:07 – If you know better, you can do better. 3:45 – Doing in a non-physical way 6:04 – Changing the paradigm of time 7:15 – It’s all in the doing 10:37 – Doing is not necessarily better than knowing 11:38 – Presence and the present moment 14:27 – To do in the moment is to just experience 15:06 – The notion of enlightenment 15:51 – Being in the moment, or not 16:39 – The past and its utility 18:24 – Why ‘now’ is important 20:58 – Projecting into the future 24:19 – Letting go and surrendering 26:54 – Trying to control everything 28:32 – Responsibility and sense of sovereignty 30:18 – Choosing who you want to be 33:39 – Knowing, but not doing 35:42 – Priorities and your choices 38:00 – Instinct vs. cognition 42:16 – The difference between knowing and understanding 45:08 – What we ‘should’ want 48:07 – Gaining clarity for yourself 50:10 – Grit, determination and resilience Let us know your thoughts and if you have any questions or suggestions for us. Kara is a business development brand consultant and journalist who has worked with many publications, including Cosmopolitan, Italian Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Esquire, Forbes, and more. After six years of hustling in the New York City fashion industry, the material world was the focus and foundation of her life. She worked too long, stressed too much, and was mentally and physically burned to a crisp. In December 2016, her busy lifestyle came to an abrupt halt when she was diagnosed with a rare soft-tissue cancer known as synovial sarcoma. She was 24 years old at the time. During her battle with cancer, spirituality acted as her guiding light, a source of strength, and a powerful release. It comforted her through eight months filled with five lengthy chemotherapy sessions, two radical leg surgeries, and 35 exhausting radiation sessions. Having recovered from her cancer battle, she has a fresh focus on self-healing, mindfulness, and a new career path. She now represents and works with purpose-driven brands in wellness, sustainability and clean beauty through Boundless by Kara - a personal brand extension of her work where she and her contributors write about personal brand experiences, reviews and partnerships in the conscious lifestyle and wellness sector. #053 - Mathieu Bertrand
In this episode, Shaun and I are joined by Mathieu Bertrand. Mathieu is the co-founder of Like Family, a social enterprise specialising in companionship and social supports for older Australians and people living with a disability who may be experiencing social isolation or loneliness. Mathieu started the organisation with his wife, Jenna, after they experienced first-hand the struggles in the Aged and Disability sectors. Jenna and Mat came from corporate backgrounds and left to pursue their goal to make a difference in people’s lives. Having been through it themselves, they are passionate about helping people find the best solutions to their home care needs. In 2018, Like Family won StartCon's Best Start-up for Social Good, and in 2019, they were named Australia's 4th fastest growing tech start-up.
