Geoff Hunt & Angela Bilecki: Taking A Pure Detour
Matt talks with the owners of his new favourite YouTube channel, Pure Detour. As they'll tell you at the start of their videos, Geoff and Angela sold everything to leave Canada and travel the world, and started making YouTube videos to document the whole process. They share the joys of travelling, their favourite destinations, the way their families reacted to their decision to pack up and leave, and some of the struggles that come along with starting a YouTube channel when you have no experience making videos. Oh, and there's also lots of gushing about how amazing Spain and Morocco are- particularly the food. If you want an in-depth look at the lifestyle of a burgeoning travel blogger, this is the episode for you. From what they say, it's not as unattainable as you might think. Christian Zyp: Don't Tell Me What Love Can Do
Christian Zyp is a host on Edmonton's CJSR's Moving Radio. But you're not listening to this episode for that. The story of our friendship begins on the radio in 1995 with the release of Van Halen's Balance CD. Back then radio stations were given advance copies and a "World Album Premiere". The special we ran only featured 9/11 songs on the CD. Where we the other two. Two drunk guys started calling me and asking why we had left two of the songs off and I said, "If you have some beer in the fridge I'll bring the CD over and we'll listen to it." What's a few brews between Van Halen fans? From there on, Garth Thatchuk and Christian Zyp became lifelong friends. Zyp started his radio career in 1998 as the host of the venerable Moving Radio on CJSR. But he is better known as a teacher, movie buff, music lover, soccer teammate, and overall great guy. The last time I saw him was in Edmonton in 2015. Life changed for him and his wife Trina 4 months later. You just skip over listening to the podcast and head straight to the blog page to read about Zyp's incredible story of battling back from the brink of death from contracting meningitis. This episode is dedicated to my good friend who reminds me to be thankful everyday and a reminder of the many ways radio creates friendships and bonds across the airwaves and beyond. Zyp and Trina are also responsible for kicking my ass and telling me to get going with a podcast back in November 2015. This episode does not have any discussion of breaks, bits, PPM numbers, digital anything, or workforce reductions. This is is the story community, friendship and gratitude. If you do get the chance, take the time to call someone you met along your radio journey, and see how they are doing. They would love to hear from you. James Blick Explains Spain
Avery and I love Spain. A few years ago we went to Italy to get our first European experience as a couple and loved Rome and Tuscany. Italy showed us what can happen when fresh ingredients get involved. In 2018, we made our first trip to Spain and found that the Spanish lifestyle of socialization was a little more in line than what we have to deal with in North America. In our perfect world, we would rather go to 5 bars in over 5 nights and meet a few (sometimes new) people, rather than trying to everyone at once at one event on a weekend. The problem with that is it consumes your weekend. We went back to Spain the following year and travelled the north. After 4 weeks in Spain, we still feel we haven't seen everything. When there is nothing on TV, Avery and I watch James Blick's videos as he travels Spain sampling some of the best food in the world.  In this episode, I speak to James about his company Devour Tours, and how this Kiwi found to his to Spain to become one of Spain's biggest ambassadors to the Anglophone World. If you are planning a trip to Spain, subscribe to his YouTube channel and his Instagram to get you thinking about how you will spend your time when you get there. And food lovers, James and his team at Devour Tours are on lockdown like the rest of the planet - but that doesn't stop them from connecting you to the food. The company has put together a digital cookbook so you can enjoy Spanish cuisine in your kitchen. Devour Tours hosts events in a number of Spanish cities including Barcelona, Madrid, Seville, and San Sebastian, as well as other European destinations like London, Lisbon, Paris and Rome.  Finally, Avery and I have some personal suggestions that we loved and have shared on the blog page of this episode which you can find here. Sugar Sammy: Back to Canada!
SSugar Sammy and I connected back in the early part of the millennium in Montreal. He would drop by CHOM for what was supposed to be casual conversation and promotion of his upcoming comedy shows. He was genuinely so funny he would stick around for multiple segments, talking locally... comedically. (That works really well with a radio audience) Since then, Sammy has been one of the hardest working people in comedy. He has conquered markets like Dubai, Lebanon, Paris, and Quebec. Sammy speaks and performs in 4 languages: English, French, Punjabi and Hindi.  It has been nearly 10 years since Sammy and I have seen one another. He still might not the first comedian that comes to mind in English Canada or the U.S.A. but the upcoming tour is going to change that. He has a slew of dates ready to roll in the coming months so please register for his e-mail list to find out when he is coming to a locale near you.  During this podcast, Sammy made mention of his appearance on CTV's W5 a few years ago. You can watch it on YouTube here.  Please rate and review this show; it would be very much appreciated.  Support the show: http://paypal.me/mattcundill Learn more about your ad choices. Karla's Boobs Are Killing Her
I first got to know Karla in the summer of 2018. We met at our friend Gestur's 50th. Actually there's a whole episode dedicated to that wonderful party. Karla was the other podcaster at the party with a show called "Stand Up Speak Up". We immediately hit it off and searched for ways to work together. Over the course of a few months, Karla and I worked on a few episodes and I got to narrate two of the more recent episodes.  Then Karla got sick. Actually, she had been sick for a few years and the doctor's missed it.  In this episode, you'll hear all about Karla's love for Lake of the Woods, her time in the cell phone industry, her foray into tech, why she started her podcast and spun off her greatest podcast accomplishment into a new podcast called Finding Shelley Desrochers, and about the cancer she lives with. Karla has also started a brand new podcast called, My Boobs Are Trying to Kill Me.  If you would like to e-mail Karla some words of support, or if you have any information on Finding Shelley Desrochers, please e-mail Karla through the Stand Up Speak Up Website - or karla.tolstoy@standupspeakup.ca Support the show: http://paypal.me/mattcundill Learn more about your ad choices. Dating Apps are Full of Dipsh1ts
When Allison Currie decided to start dating again, she found was things had changed from the last time she had been in circulation. The creation of dating apps changed the dating landscape. No problem, Allison is highly adaptable and has a smart phone. Her foray into the dating world started with Match, then Tinder and then Bumble. What she found was enough strange behaviour to write a book. She hasn't written the book yet, but it was enough to appear on this podcast. Allison's story is one of many in a dating world that features the circulation of lewd photos, the acceptance of "ghosting", and bad behaviour. Many of these have been explored in the past on a favourite podcast of mine, Why Oh Why with Andrea Silenzi.  We even try to break down if the apps are just permission for men to behave badly in advance of getting to the relationship. Finally, I suspect that there are tales to be told from other side about females behaving badly on dating apps - if you want to tell your story, just e-mail me. matt@hotairpodcast.com Follow us - Instagram Twitter Facebook Support the show: http://paypal.me/mattcundill Learn more about your ad choices. Comedian Jacy Lafontaine
What Happens If I do a podcast with a Comedian?  Jacy Lafontaine is funny. So I just had to have her on a podcast to talk about being a comedian, writing, reading the audience and when it's a good time to smoke a joint. Jacy was born in Oshawa, grew up in Cornwall and isn't afraid to be blunt. We did find out that she does have some limits and no-go's. As for her taste in men, she is fine with the beards, and appreciates the honesty. The half hour together was fiun - and her future bright. Jessica Scott-Reid's Life as a Hockey Wife
You know the TV show Hockey Wives? It features a rotating cast of 7 or 8 hockey wives, their family life and struggles with players going on the road, managing on their own - and the pressures - yes there are pressures - of trying to live a normal life on a planet revolving around hockey. I watched season 1 of Hockey Wives. I Pvr'd season 2 and didn't get into season 3. Then I realized i had a podcast and said - hey... i know a hockey wife. Back in 2006 when Brandon Reid played for the Manitoba Moose, he would pop by the radio station i was working at. I met once sat beside his future wife while getting a pedicure, and if youre asking why I was getting a pedicure - it's because i took my soccer playing seriously. way too seriously. Fast forward to today, and the two of them got married, and Brandon's career went from the Vancouver Canucks, to Dusseldorf Germany, to the Swiss League, to Hamburg, then the lucrative KHL where a career ending injury had Brandon entering the coaching ranks. In that time, Jessica was - a hockey wife, but you might know her as a freelance writer having her works appear in MacLeans, the CBC, the National Post and countless others. she's written about being a hockey wive, a vegan, and most recently about the treatment of animals.
