The Process of Developing a Textbook
In this episode for the HET podcast, we are joined by Dr. Kenneth L Miller, PT, DPT and Dr. Melissa  L. Bednarek, PT, DPT, PhD. They talk about their why’s for creating a textbook and what the process is like! Biographies: Kenneth L Miller, PT, DPT is a board-certified geriatric clinical specialist, advanced credentialed exercise expert for aging adults and credentialed clinical instructor from APTA. He has over 26 years of clinical practice with the older adult population. Dr Miller is an assistant professor at the University of North Texas Health Science Center with dual appointments in the Department of Physical Therapy in the School of Health Professions and in the Department of Internal Medicine and Geriatrics in the Texas College of Osteopathic Medicine. His clinical focus is on best practices for use with the older adult population. He has spoken nationally and internationally on topics of gerontology including primary prevention, frailty, outcome measures and pharmacology. He serves on several editorial boards related to geriatric care and physical therapy education including Topics in Geriatric Rehabilitation where he was guest editor for a thematic issue dedicated to pharmacology and nutrition.  He serves the physical therapy profession as director of practice for the Academy of Geriatric Physical Therapy and on several Academy Task Forces. Most recently, he has helped to develop the best practice guidelines for the academy that describe best practices for care of older adults. Medical Marijuana with Drs. Suzanne Tinsley and Janine Hatch
In this episode, Drs. Suzanne Tinsley, PhD, PT and Janine Hatch, PT, DPT, MS come onto the HET Podcast to discuss the area of medical marijuana and help us understand how this drug interacts and affects patient outcomes. Biography: Dr. Hatch holds a BS degree in PT from New York University, and a Master’s and Doctor of PT degrees from MGH-IHP with concentrations in balance disorders in the elderly and clinical management of vestibular disorders. Her thesis research at MGH-IP garnered the APTA Dorothy Briggs Award in 2002. She earned her Geriatric Clinical Specialist Certification in 2009 and recertified in 2019, and became a Certified Vestibular Therapist through Emory University in 2016. Dr. Hatch has 26 years of teaching experience in both entry-level and post professional doctoral physical therapy programs. She is currently the Associate Director of the Transitional Doctor of Physical Therapy program at Shenandoah University, with teaching responsibilities in Professionalism in Physical Therapy and the Capstone courses Emerging Clinical Practice. In her 31 years of clinical practice, she has had extensive experience managing adult clients with musculoskeletal conditions, balance and mobility disorders, and vestibular dysfunction across the spectrum of clinical settings, and is currently practicing at the Carolton Chronic and Convalescent Hospital. Dr. Hatch has authored a number of publications on balance and vestibular dysfunction, has presented at both a regional and national level, and is a reviewer for several peer-reviewed journals, including the Journal of Geriatric Physical Therapy and the American Journal for Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. Dr. Tinsley received her Master’s in Physical Therapy from Texas Woman’s University in 1986 and her PhD in Neuropharmacology from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Shreveport in 1999. She is an Associate Professor in the Department of Rehabilitation Sciences at Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Shreveport. Dr. Tinsley teaches medical pharmacology in the School of Allied Health Professions, School of Graduate Studies and School of Medicine. Dr. Tinsley is an APTA Board Certified Neurologic Physical Therapist and has presented nationally at APTA conferences as well as numerous continuing education seminars on the topic of pharmacology and rehabilitation. She currently serves as Chair of the Stroke SIG, Neurology Section, APTA. She has an active clinical practice in the area of neurological rehabilitation as well as an active clinical research agenda.

In this episode, Becky Bliss, PT, DPT, DHSc comes onto the HET Podcast to speak about the dissertation process.  Biography: Becky Bliss, PT, DPT, DHSc is a Clinical Assistant Teaching Professor in the Doctor of Physical Therapy program at the University of Missouri and is a board certified in Neurological Physical Therapy. She is also the program coordinator for the Physical Therapy Neurological Residency and is responsible for design and delivery of the didactic curriculum. Becky graduated from Ithaca College Department of Physical Therapy with a combined undergraduate-graduate Master of Physical Therapy in 2001. Biography: Dr. Suzanne Poole, DNP, APRN, FNP, BC is a Family Nurse Practitioner at Coastal Plains Primary Care and Hampton Regional Medical Center. She completed her bachelor of science degree in psychology at the College of Charleston as well as her bachelor of science in nursing, master of science in nursing, and doctor of nursing practice at the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston, SC. Suzanne is a scholarship recipient of the National Health Service Corps and works with this organization to increase health care access to underserved communities. She enjoys working in rural health and focuses on patient education and preventive healthcare. Suzanne currently lives in Beaufort, SC and loves animals, nature, cooking, and traveling. On today's show, we welcome a father-daughter duo, Mark McDaniel, PhD, a professor of psychology at the University of Washington and Leda McDaniel, PT, DPT, a licensed physical therapist from Atlanta, Georgia. She completed an Orthopedic Physical Therapy Residency at Emory University in July 2020. During her residency, she served as a guest lecturer and teaching assistant within select courses in Emory’s Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT) program. Leda earned her Doctorate of Physical Therapy in 2019 from Ohio University and during her graduate studies also served as a teaching assistant and peer tutor to first and second year DPT students in gross anatomy, neuroanatomy, biomechanics and musculoskeletal courses. Leda’s passion for physical therapy is paralleled by an interest in teaching and education and she is fortunate enough to be the daughter of Dr. Mark McDaniel, the prominent educational psychologist and author of Make it Stick: The Science of Successful Learning (2014). He received his Ph.D. from University of Colorado in 1980. His research is in the general area of human learning and memory, with an emphasis on prospective memory, encoding and retrieval processes in episodic memory and applications to educational contexts. His educationally relevant research includes a series of studies on elaborative study techniques, learning of science categories, and enhancing learning through testing (repeated retrieval), with much of this latter work being conducted in college and middle school classrooms. His research has been sponsored by the Institute of Educational Sciences, the James S. McDonnell Foundation, the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, and NASA.  McDaniel has served as Associate Editor of the Journal of Experimental Psychology: Learning, Memory, and Cognition and as President of the Rocky Mountain Psychological Association and of Divisions 3 of the American Psychological Association. He has published over 300 journal articles, book chapters, and edited books on human learning and memory, and is the co-author with Peter Brown and Henry Roediger of the recent book: Make It Stick:  The Science of Successful Learning (Harvard University Press, 2014).
