Vanguard Award winner describes her work to address racial health disparities in Wisconsin. Featuring Dr. Patricia McManus

This year’s Vanguard Award winner is Dr. Patricia McManus, founder of the Black Health Coalition of Wisconsin (BHCW). She charts the evolution of BHCW from workshop series to state-wide advocacy organization, and describes how adopting a “by us, for us” philosophy has ensured cultural concordance and minority leadership in addressing major inequities in health education and provision. Task forces focusing on mental health, HIV, prenatal and postpartum health, and health access have been effective vehicles for addressing disparities, but major problems linked to poverty and structural racism remain. With Dr. Bonnie Simpson Mason.
