After the battle of Panipat, this area became a hotly contested territory among various powers like Sikhs, Jats, Mughals and Marathas etc. During this period, many mercenaries like George Thomas, James Skinner etc. also tried their luck here and some like Thomas were even able to carve out their own principalities here.
