TFJ #12 - Pastor Mike Ruel Talks Fatherhood
Mike Ruel talks about his transformation from road musician to church pastor, and how this calling brought more meaning to his life as a father. From the show: "As dads, the tendency is to provoke. The tendency is to exasperate. The tendency is maybe to expect so much out of our kids, that when they don't live up to it, they feel like a disappointment. They feel like a failure. The tendency is for our kids to have to fight for our time so much, that they get the message that they're a disappointment. That they're not important to us. If I could just beg with fathers to embrace the message of what God has given us in Christ and the reconciliation that he offers, but to understand how we're commanded to nurture, not to provoke, not to exasperate, to build up, not to tear down." TFJ #2 - Death and Rebirth on The Father's Journey
In this episode of The Father's Journey I discuss the idea of death and rebirth on The Father's Journey, the struggles I face with my daughter going into her third year, and how the story of Young Goodman Brown resembles the journey of all fathers. To grow as fathers we need to kill off the old parts of ourselves, those parts that hinder us most. Each time we do so we are reborn anew. Having a three year old who's coming into her own is like having a little rebel. We all journey into the dark forest of the night. Goodman Brown and fathers are more similar than different.

TFJ #1 - Boxing, Fatherhood, and a Father's Tragic Life
In this episode of The Father's Journey I talk about Hands of Stone, the movie based on Roberto Duran's life, and the parallel heroic journey that boxers and fathers make. I also tell the tragic story of my father's life and untimely death and how boxing could've saved him from the streets, but in the end didn't. Finally, I touch on my life growing up without a father and how it lead me down a path of addiction and trouble, until I discovered kickboxing.
