Ep 60. Doing It Your Way – Advice for the Next Gen of Family Business Leaders with Guest Danielle Mercuri
Ep 60 Doing It Your Way – Advice for the Next Gen of Family Business Leaders Listen in as we talk with Danielle Mercuri*, CEO of DD Hospitality Group and owner of Rise n Shine Diner & Loded in Syracuse, NY about how she inherited Rise n Shine from someone who wasn’t “blood family”, how she continues the original owner's legacy and yet makes it her own, plus sage advice for the next generation of family business owners that cannot be overlooked. OUR GUEST Danielle Mercuri* My business has not only turned me into the person I am today, but it has also allowed me to change others' lives along the process. As the restaurant and hospitality industry continue to dig deeper roots in my life, I am realizing that my goals are to connect people over great food every day. There’s a lot of history to be known in this place and we’ve come a long way in recent years, but here is the website version. All the way back in 2009, I lost my job and was unemployed for a year. I was going through one of the darkest times in my life; no money, three daughters to take care of and no idea of what was next. I prayed. I prayed for help. In that moment, and I do mean in that very moment, the phone rang… My stepfather, Tommy Rozzano, called about a position at The Rise N Shine Diner! A longtime friend of Tommy’s, Peter Henessey, needed a waitress full time and I CLEARLY needed a job. I clearly remember I couldn’t even find this diner! It was tucked behind a small Valvoline, with not much signage. I drove around a few times looking for the diner, and I almost gave up. Then, I saw this tiny, rundown building in the back. Pete, who I had never met, welcomed me right away and eventually became like an uncle to me. I was instantly drawn to helping Pete build his business and take care of our customers. I saw the potential in this tiny, little, off-the-beaten path diner and knew my future was in FOOD! He had owned many restaurants in his day and had been a great friend to many; but little did we know this diner would be his last stop. A few years down the road, Pete fell ill with leukemia and was told he didn’t have a lot of time to live. One day, he called me to his bedside at the hospital. Pete, having no family, felt that I was the right person for the job and asked me if I would take over the Diner. This was a great opportunity, and I was humbled, but I was also SCARED! I have never run my own business, but Pete reminded me that I was built for this! Initially I was determined to help Pete while he was in the hospital in hopes he would beat the sickness and come home…but he didn’t. A couple months later he died. I lost a friend, mentor and teacher, but what I gained was the ability to preserve and take on this Restaurant. In 2011 I began my new journey as a business owner. I couldn’t look back, only forward. My plan was to continue building this business, like Pete would have wanted. To RISE this business to its potential and SHINE! My mission is to share great tasting food and to make it memorable. We understand that food is a universal language; it brings people together from all walks of life and makes memories, long-lasting ones. You can follow me on Instagram and Facebook. Ep 59. Business Transition & The Trust Factor with Guest Jon Spacher of Fee Brothers
Ep. 59 Business Transition & The Trust Factor Listen in as we talk with 5th generation co-owner of Fee Brothers Jon Spacher* about the near-100 year long history of Fee Brothers, his transition from the insurance industry into the cocktail industry, and the necessity of trust when it comes to family business transitions. OUR GUEST Jon Spacher* Previous owner Ellen transferred ownership to Benn Fee Spacher and his brother Jon* in March 2020. Jonathan F Spacher* is the eldest son of Mary Fee Spacher, born May 1976 and a graduate of Penn State University with a degree in Insurance.  He spent 24 years working in the Insurance industry, ultimately becoming a regional president for a national insurance company.  In April 2021, Jon started at Fee Brothers as CEO.  Jon has a real knack for business and sales and a great enthusiasm for the cocktail industry. For many years, Fee Brothers was one of the last producers of Cocktail Bitters in the United States.  Once referred to as “The Noah’s Arc of Bitters,” they kept those products from going extinct before the great classic cocktail revival.  Fee Brothers continues to stretch and expand.  Their products have been shipped to every continent except Antarctica, which as of this writing, is lacking a known restaurant or bar. Could James, Owen, John, and Joseph ever have dreamed in the 1860’s what the future would hold?  Many years have passed since that little saloon/delicatessen was established in 1863.  The care that Fee Brothers puts into bottling their products and the concern for each and every customer’s needs carries the company into the future.  The Fee family takes pride in their company’s history by displaying this little verse: “The House of Fee by the Genesee Since eighteen hundred and sixty-three.”   ----- CRN-4780063-060822 *not affiliated with Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp. Ep 54. The World Saving Power of Family Philanthropy with Guests Yale Levey, Scott Farnsworth & Ryan Ponsford
Listen into this exciting new episode with guests Yale Levey*, Ryan Ponsford* and Scott Farnsworth* as we discuss the world-saving power of family philanthropy!   The beauty of philanthropy is that there’s no financial skill you can’t learn through it.  We will cover how philanthropy can look very different between families & how the grandparents handle the public image of it (positive or negative) and how philanthropy can bring family members who may not generally have interest in the family business together, simply because of the type of philanthropy they’re doing. OUR GUESTS Yale Levey*  Co-Founder and President - Gateway for Good  Yale’s professional background and experience originates from the wealth management space.  In that role, he stands out as someone who has ascended to a place of expertise where wealth management intersects philanthropic activities, helping his clients, fellow advisors and youth build philanthropy and giving into their activities and behaviors.  Understanding that true wealth is much more than just dollars and cents, it was this awareness that led Yale to pioneer the formation of one of the country’s first holistic wealth consulting firms.  Through his years of intentionally building philanthropy and giving into the work he does for families and business leaders, Yale has led the way in igniting conversations beyond wealth and profitability into a conversation about impact and significance.  He understands that philanthropy and giving is perhaps one of the best tools we have available to reunite a divided world.  Yale is the thought leader and innovator you want in the room when you’re looking to design something new that aligns your purpose and passion with profits and impact. Ryan Ponsford*  Co-Founder and Board Chair – Gateway for Good  Ryan’s professional background and experience originates in the private banking world.  In that role, as an advisor to affluent families, over time, Ryan saw the challenges and dangers surrounding wealth preservation and wealth accumulation in families and businesses.  He saw that even the best financial planning didn’t necessarily lead to happy, functional and successful people, families or businesses.  He came to know that the place planning breaks down is often around communication, trust, purpose, mission and vision.  This realization served as the catalyst that led him to begin focusing on how he could help his clients experience success and continuity not only in terms of financial success, but life success. Scott Farnsworth*  Scott Farnsworth, J.D., is a nationally-recognized speaker, author, and practitioner in the fields of wills, living trusts, tax-free retirement, charitable giving, and values-based estate planning.  Over the years, he has poured his innovation and creativity into a wide range of enterprises designed to connect families, change lives, and inspire clients to preserve and pass on their legacies.  These include Family Heritage International; the Cerus Company; SunBridge, Inc.; Legacy Planning Associates, LLC; Main Street Philanthropy; and Personal Asset Advisors.  Most recently, Scott founded Will & Trust Express because he believes high-quality legal services should be available and affordable for middle-income individuals and families. He has developed tools and processes that simplify the creation of professional-grade living trusts, wills, living wills, and powers of attorney for Florida residents.  In addition to his four decades of professional experience as a will and trust attorney, he was Vice President & Trust Officer at Trustmark National Bank and professor of business law at the University of Southern Mississippi.    Scott has designed and presented hundreds of speeches, seminars, and professional workshops to a wide range of client organizations, and estate planning, financial planning, and philanthropic groups over the past 42 years.  In addition to this collection of essays, he is the author of four other books: Closing the Gap: A Revolutionary Approach to Client Services; Like a Library Burning: Sharing and Saving a Lifetime of Stories; Puzzling Questions for Middle Income Families; and Double Your Sales: An Honest and Authentic Approach to Professional Selling.  He grew up on a small dairy farm in Fruitland, New Mexico, one of thirteen children in a “yours, mine, and ours” family. He earned his undergraduate degree magna cum laude at Brigham Young University in Portuguese and Political Science, with a minor in Philosophy.  He earned his law degree magna cum laude at Brigham Young University Law School, where he was Managing Editor of BYU Law Review and the author of two professionally published legal articles.  Following graduation, he served as Judicial Clerk for Judge Paul H. Roney of the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit, who was based in St. Petersburg, Florida.  He and his wife Marcie live in Orlando, Florida.  They are the proud parents of six children and the grandparents of eight grandchildren  -----  *not affiliated with Lincoln Financial Group  Michael Palumbos is a registered representative of Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp. Ep 50. The Hybrid Heart; When Human Emotion Meets Tech with Heather Smith of Storyfile
Ep 50. The Hybrid Heart; When Human Emotion Meets Tech  Listen in as we talk to Heather Maio-Smith* about the intersection of human emotion with technology for future generations to come and how it can help share what really matters; stories that are the foundation of a family.   In this episode, you’ll learn:  How businesses can utilize next gen tech to support the next gen in the family  The history of StoryFile; how Heather wants to provide the ability for future generations to have conversations with Holocaust survivors  How Heather balances running StoryFile with her husband - and many other members of her family - as a family business  OUR GUEST  Heather Maio-Smith*  Heather is an award-winning interactive storytelling pioneer and technology visionary who brings over a decade of immersive storytelling leadership to StoryFile.   In 2010, Heather developed the first 3D interactive conversation with Holocaust Survivor Rose Schindler through her creative agency Conscience Display. At the time, she was creating physical video installations at the United Nations, USC, and in Havana, Cuba, but she understood that the future of storytelling lay at the intersection of digital media and ‘natural conversation’ and decided to create it.    Heather developed a strategic partnership with two global entities with competencies in visual media and technology - USC Shoah Foundation and the Institute for Creative Technologies.  The partnership she led has resulted in the development of a new medium - natural conversation video.    Through Heather’s leadership, immersive interactive natural conversation video has gone from being a concept to a reality, combining hi-fidelity multi-scopic video with voice commands to deliver commercial grade natural conversation with an individual, whether it’s  a life-sized video or on your mobile device, replicating the emotional experience of having a conversation with a person. She developed and pioneered Dimensions in Testimony, a program to interview Holocaust Survivors in volumetric interactive video without that survivor actually being present. Dimensions in Testimony won both the People’s Choice Award and the Jury Prize at Sheffield Doc Fest in 2016. She produced and led the project before moving on to found and lead StoryFile.  ----------------  *Not affiliated  with Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp.  Michael Palumbos is a registered representative of Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp.   Securities and investment advisory services offered through Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp., a broker/dealer (member SIPC) and registered investment advisor. Ep 41. Re-Cycling & Re-Inventing in Family Business with Guests The Shine Family
Ep 41. Recycling & Reinventing in the Family Business  On this episode of The Family Biz Show, listen as we talk to three members of the Shine Family* of Manitoba Corp about the various ways a family business can re-invent itself over the generations to stay fresh and on top. This Weeks Guests RICHARD W. SHINE  Richard grew up in Amherst, NY and attended Amherst Central High School.  He attended St. Lawrance University in Canton, NY for his freshman and sophomore years.  He transferred to the University of Buffalo to pursue a business degree, graduating in 1964.  While at UB he participated in Air Force ROTC and was commissioned a 2nd Lt.  in the USAF in September of that year.  He attended pilot training and served six years flying missions all over the world including spending his final active-duty year in Vietnam.  Upon release from active duty in 1970, he found that his intention to become an airline pilot would be a very difficult path since the airlines had hired so many pilots in the prior three years.  Thus, he joined his father’s small local business recycling metals.  Manitoba Corporation only had a total of four employees at that time not including ownership.  They served an area of less than 20 miles from their facility.  He quickly realized that we were strictly a middleman and had no machinery to process metal and worse, many of the accounts the company had, were leaving Western New York in the mid 1970’s.  To survive he leaned upon his training as a pilot and purchased a small airplane with which he and his partner could use to make sales calls very efficiently but still be able to spend the majority of his time overseeing the activities of the company.  The company began to grow and expand and continues to do so today.  Over the years they added a great deal of machinery and equipment as well as personnel.  The trading area of Manitoba grew to encompass much of North America and some overseas business as well.  He continued to fly for the Air Force Reserves and retired with 26 years of service and the rank of Colonel.  Over the years, Manitoba owned and operated a number of different airplanes to support their business.  In 2009 Richard was invited to join the board of directors of the National Business Aviation Association (NBAA) an organization which promotes and supports the use of airplanes for business purposes.  Richard felt that the use of a business aircraft not only was responsible for Manitoba’s growth, but for the company’s very survival and he wanted to give back something to this industry through participation in this organization.  He eventually was elected chairman of NBAA and served in that capacity for two years.  Recently, he sold his company shares to his sons but remains active in the daily operation of the company.  BRIAN SHINE  Brian Shine represents fourth generation nonferrous metals recycler as CEO of Manitoba Corporation, which operates two plants: Lancaster (Buffalo), New York, and St. Louis, Missouri, with a primary focus on processing high-grade copper scrap.  Shine just completed a two-year term as Chairman of the Institute of Scrap Recycling Industries (ISRI) which is a national trade association based in Washington, DC representing 1300 member companies.  Shine graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Bowling Green State   University and also obtained a certificate from the Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership at the University of Buffalo, where he has since mentored a dozen candidates through the program. He also is a member of the Young Presidents Organization and a graduate of Leadership Buffalo.   Brian is married to Lynne and has three sons, Sam, Jake, and Drew.  ADAM SHINE  Adam has worked in the recycling industry for over 11 years and grew up around it, as he represented the 4th generation at Manitoba Corporation. One of his main responsibilities is running day to day operations at Sunking Inc*, which focuses on Electronics Recycling. Over the past several years, Adam, along with others, have helped Sunkin expand from processing 12 million lbs annually to over 25 million lbs today. The increased throughput saw Sunking expand from a 140,000 sqft faciity to a new state-of-the-art 204,000 sqft facility with automated processing capabilities. Prior to entering the recycling industry, Adam traveled globally selling and implementing software systems to five-star hotels and resorts. Adam has a love for all things technology and often tries to incorporate it in business where and when it makes sense. In his spare time, Adam coaches his sons ice hockey team and enjoys time with his family. Adam also serves on the advisory board for Camp Good Days and Special times, an organization he cares about deeply.  President of Manitoba Corporation  Vice President of Sunking and Utility Recyclers International  Vice Chair of ISRI Electronics Division Committee  Membership Chair of the ISRI Empire Chapter  Member of the REMADE Governance Board  Member of the REMADE Strategic Advisory Committee  Leadership Buffalo Rising Leaders Graduate 2009  University of Buffalo School of Management Center for Entrepreneurial Leadership Graduate 2012   ----------------  *Not affiliated with Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp.  Michael Palumbos is a registered representative of Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp.   Securities and investment advisory services offered through Lincoln Financial Advisors Corp., a broker/dealer (member SIPC) and registered investment advisor.
