EP 024: The Next Chapter of my Becoming Story
Welcome to 2021. This is the first episode of the New Year. I had to cancel the interviews I had lined up for January because, literally, my becoming story was changing as the first sun of the New Year was rising. My husband became seriously ill, and is still in a life threatening condition. One of the most common themes of this podcast, and what all the guests share, is that adversity, hardship, or trauma marked the end of one chapter and the beginning of the next. And that is exactly what is happening to me. One chapter ending. A new one beginning. EP 023: Issi Gispan’s Quest: Becoming a Person by Choice not by Birth
Master Practitioner of Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP), Issi Gispan, starts off the interview by saying “I’m on top of the world and still climbing!”. He shared that he started his quest for knowledge and training back in 1991, following a difficult divorce. Issi talks about the amazing power our own words have on our mind and body. He talks about how we tell ourselves stories about events in our past, and how NLP helps to change those stories, eliminating or reduce distressing symptoms like phobias, anxiety, even chronic pain. Issi is also a wonderful example of what I mean when I say “we are ALWAYS becoming”. Just last year, at 69 years old, Issi graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Holistic Health Sciences, and in February, just short of four months to his 70th birthday, he will be opening up his own private practice. Issi lives and works in Australia. EP 021: Joseph Contes’ Quest: I’m a potted plant. Locations may change but the soil didn’t.
Licensed Mental Health Counselor and Assistant Director of Student Support Services at University of South Florida, Joseph Contes, shares with us parts of his Becoming Story and quest for knowledge. His Becoming journey has been shaped by his ethnicity, sexual orientation, and being the son of a Military service member. When describing the impact of having to move several times as a child, Joseph said “I’m like a potted plant. Locations may change but the soil remained the same”. Joseph informs us about the various programs at USF, that directly support and assist students who may be struggling with mental illness, low income, or who are emerging from the foster care system. This was a special interview for me. Joseph was a student of mine when he was attending Troy University’s Mental Health Counselor graduate program. Now, I am proud to say, he is a professional colleague. EP020: Kelly Caleb’s Quest: As Now Cow says, “Breathe in. Breathe out. There is no need to rush about”
Licensed Clinical Social Worker and author of the Now Cow children’s book series, Kelly Caleb, tells of a life altering event she experienced. She was hit by a drunk motorcyclist, causing her car to flip over multiple times, before plunging her down a 30 foot ravine. She miraculously survived. The driver who caused the accident did not. We never know what the next chapters of our Becoming Story will hold. For Kelly, this horrifying trauma led to months of recovery, using meditation and mindfulness to cope with the anxiety. And during this time of her recovery, she wrote the first children’s book, “Now Cow Helps Drama Llama: A Mindful Tale for Coping with Anxiety”. Kelly also shares about the suicide of her friend’s 13 year old son, and how 10% of the proceeds of her books are donated to Operation Jack’s Village. You will also hear about Kelly, the psychotherapist, who uses Accelerated Resolution Therapy, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, and Mindfulness to help people who are experiencing anxiety and addiction.I encourage you to check out Now Cow books. Not only are they wonderful stories that give your children the tools to manage life’s challenges, but also are beautifully illustrated. They would make perfect gifts for all the special children in your life. Available on Amazon and Barnes & Noble. EP019: Chapters in my Becoming Story (Part one of series)
This is the first of a series of episodes where I share some of the chapters in my own Becoming Story. We move through our life journey in phases or stages. They are the points on our lifeline that mark a transition in to and out of the chapters of our lives. Just like reading a book, we don’t know what is in the next chapter. We don’t know all the characters that may enter or which ones will leave. We don’t know all the events that will occur— the wins and the losses, the successes and let downs, the joy and the heart break. And through it all there are lessons learned, personal growth, and a greater understanding of what our purpose is. For me, there has been certain books that I read during each chapter of my life that has guided me, added to my understanding, and prepared me for what was to come in the next chapter. In this first episode of the series, I share the chapter of my life that started in my late teens into my twenties. Some of the decisions I made set me in a direction that was not always the best for me, but I found my way back. I talk about the “crisis of faith” that occurred when introduced to the works of various theologians, and philosophers. One of the books that had an influence was “Love and Living”, by Franciscan Monk, Thomas Merton. I share about what I was learning, how I was starting to understand concepts of consciousness, Inner Self, True Self, creative visualization, and what is referred to as “manifestation”. I share these things in hopes that it may inspire you, give you hope, help you learn and grow on your own Becoming journey. Please email your questions and relevant experiences to IAM@thedrlynnesantiagoshow.comAnd contact me if you have a “Becoming Story” you would like to share.Follow me on Instagram @ becoming_with_drlynne

EP018: Christina Bellamy’s Quest: “Could my Hot Flashes be Causing Global Warming?”
We cannot ignore the fact that developmental stages of life that include physiological changes in our bodies influence our “Becoming”. Retired psychotherapist, Christina Bellamy, talks about the transition that occurs through a woman’s life as she moves through the stages of perimenopause to post-menopause. This is an important part of the Becoming process, as cultural and societal norms can shape how a woman may view herself, impact her emotional and mental well-being, and the health of her relationships. Christina teaches us about how this stage of a woman’s life has been viewed through the years, in society, culturally, and within the medical profession. Christina talks about how couples are affected and how they can cope with, what she describes as, the possible “emotional tsunami”. Christina helps us celebrate this time in women’s lives through her words of humor, support and inspiration.
