EP06: The Science Behind Restaurant Nightmares with Dr. Robert Strickgold, Professor of Psychiatry at the Center for Sleep and Cognition, Harvard Medical School
On this episode of Cocktail Corner, Jonathan Blayer sits down with Dr. Robert Stickhold to discuss “Restaurant Nightmares”, when work carries over into your dreams. Dr. Stickhold is an Associate Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School who focuses on the relationship between sleep and learning. Two common nightmares for those in the  restaurant industry are forgetting an item of an order or being alone in the restaurant with guests continuing to come in and you have to do it all by yourself. Why does the brain create these different scenarios that we experience when dreaming?  Our brain is working all night long, quite hard actually, at processing our memories from the day. So what these two common “work nightmares” dreams are saying is that restaurant industry employees could have some obsessive fears, concerns, or confusions that your brain picks up on and then wants to try and figure out what to do about it. Having a dream where you forget an item from an order is a classic incompleteness dream. Remembering orders is a recurring and constant part of the position or concern that day by day your brain keeps flagging it. Your brain doesn’t have anything to say to help you, it can’t figure out a solution to it, so you continue to have the dream. Having a dream where you are the only one left in a restaurant full of customers is more along the lines of a worst case scenario or doomsday dream.  Suggesting that you are worried about either taking on or being given more than you can handle. The dream is going to keep replaying until either you figure out how to solve it, or you decide that the problem is not that big of a deal. Dream rehearsal can be an effective solution, where you imagine a
