Learning to Cope with Pressure, with Adrian Mankopan #Ep 79
Today I speak to Adrian Mankopan to find out about his journey and how he is helping others to make better decisions. Adrian had previously been addicted to alcohol and found himself living in a graveyard, hating himself and life. But somewhere along the road something shifted for Adrian, and decided to turn his life around. During this episode, Adrian shares what it was like growing up with a father and how he had a deep hatred for himself and life. This led him to try out drugs and alcohol at a young age. Adrian loved how being drunk made him feel, as it gave him the much-needed confidence to be social and stand up for himself. But alcohol only masked the pain, and soon enough he developed an addiction to alcohol which then led him to end up homeless, living in a graveyard. Everything began to shift when Adrian started to take responsibility for his life and for where he found himself. Soon enough he was sober for weeks and opportunities started rolling in. Today Adrian helps others understand their pain and teaches them coping mechanisms so that they do not have to reach for the bottle or engage in other destructive behaviours in order to mask the pain. Stay tuned, this is an episode not to be missed. ________________________________________ *Connect with Adrian on Instagram *Visit our website for resources on helping you rise to excellence. Pain Unlocks the Next Level: In the mind of a Champion, with Jaco Smit - Ep70
This week I speak to Jaco Smit, a visually impaired South African champion athlete who allowed his adversity to carve out his advantage. Jaco grew up in a ‘dorp’ in the Eastern Cape and where the chances of someone like him representing South Africa is unheard of.  But his resilience and commitment to his dream made it all possible. Jaco and I speak about his childhood, and he recalls how at the age of 8 he would go and clean gardens after school and take that R5 that he made to buy a loaf of bread for dinner, as his parents struggled financially. He didn’t see it as a burden though and is thankful for that level of responsibility and pressure, as it helped him ease through the difficulties of life that followed. In fact, he credits his success as an athlete to those difficult times. At the age of 20 Jaco was working at a local supermarket and running the 5km to work and back daily. Then he suddenly got retrenched, which gave him the push to go all in on his dreams to be a South African champion. Jaco makes reference to the fact that sometimes a door has to shut in our face in order for us to find the door that has been waiting for us. Today Jaco trains with an abled bodied team, he likes the challenge as it forces him to get better. Jaco and I also speak about the disappointment he faced when he did not get the call up to represent South Africa at the Paralympics this year. He gives us some insight into how he reframed this setback so that it sets him up for a greater comeback, with his mind set on the Commonwealth Games in 2022. Stay tuned, this is an episode not to be missed. Some of Jaco's achievements are; 2019- Won 1 Gold Medal in the 400m at the 2019 World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Swirtzerland. 2019- Won 1 Bronze Medal in the 400m at the 2019 World Para Athletics Grand Prix in Italy. 2019- Won 2 Gold Medals( 400m and 100m) at the 2019 SASAPD National Championships for the Disabled in Stellenboch. _______________________________ Visit our website for resources on helping you rise to excellence. The Lasting Legacy of Covid: The Demand for Commercial Space, with Rethaa van der Berg
This week I speak to Rethaa van der Berg, a facilities manager working in the commercial rental space, to find out the impact that covid has had on the commercial office and shopping mall space, as well as how they have adapted during these times. Covid restrictions have changed the landscape of work environments with many companies downsizing office spaces and others allowing their employees to work from home indefinitely. This gave rise to an important question; will the overall demand for office and commercial space ever go back to what it was like pre-covid, and what are those working in the industry doing to adapt. I brought in Rethaa, a facilities manager working in the commercial rental space, to help me answer these questions. During this episode, we speak about the legacy of Covid, how certain businesses were hit hard during the lockdowns while others found themselves in the perfect season to multiply their growth. We speak about why online shopping will not replace the need for malls, and how Covid has magnified our need for social interaction.
