027: How to Make Unbreakable Patient Connections
We don’t always think about doctor-patient relationships in terms of community. Even though there’s so much community in our social networks, our peer-to-peer networks, and with our colleagues, busy practitioners are often guilty of making patients feel like boxes being checked off instead of members of a larger family.  This is why I want you to think about how to build real connections with your ideal patients. I want you to think about WHO those patients really are, what you need to do (or stop doing) in order to keep them, and what you can do right away to make them feel completely understood and cared for. In today’s podcast, I’m sharing some of my best ideas and strategies how to build a powerful community within your practice, allowing you to maintain your patient relationships for the long haul. Gold Nuggets How medical clinics fail to nurture patient relationships. (1:41) Why you don’t need to make connections with every single patient who walks in your door. (4:55) Why sharing your story and your “why” is so important. (7:18) How video can make a huge difference for your patients. 026: 10 Things You Must Know About Your Ideal Patient
As we enter into 2021, we’re all looking deep within our wellness practices to determine exactly what we’re going to do differently this year. Although we can’t see what curveballs, challenges, or setbacks that could lie ahead, there’s one thing we can do right now: make sure that our marketing message resonates and reaches the right audience! Because here’s the truth – you may be the best clinician in your area but if someone else (who isn’t nearly as awesome as you are) does a better job at marketing their services, they will come out on top. So if you’re struggling to bring in new patients, fill up your schedule, or increase your revenue, the problem is most likely with your messaging. This means it’s time to sit down and figure out exactly who your ideal patient is so you can reel them in. What health conditions do they have? What’s their occupation? At their core, who are they, really? Today’s episode is all about determining precisely who you serve. You’ll learn ten invaluable things you absolutely must know to craft a message that doesn’t just resonate with your ideal patient, but shows them that you (and no one else) are the person who can best help them. Gold Nuggets Why trying to serve everyone ensures that you will serve no one. How knowing your ideal patient’s age, gender, occupation, hobbies, and interests can all help you find your niche. Why it’s important to know what your ideal patient likes to watch and listen to, where they hang out on social media, and their primary problems as you create your message. Additional questions and resources you can use to niche your practice. 025: The Gifts That 2020 Delivered
We’ve finally made it to the end of 2020 (cue the happy dance). And if you’re anything like me, you probably didn’t imagine that this year would pan like it did.  In my previous podcast episode 020, we discussed how to make big plans for 2021. Now I’d like to ask you to get a little introspective by asking yourself what you want to see change as you go into the New Year.  Ask yourself: Did you play full out in your business? How well did you manage business and personal commitments? Were there areas you’d like to improve but aren’t sure how?    Now that I’ve got you thinking, I’ll take you on a journey with me, traveling through my 2020. We’ll discuss the high points, the low points, the things I (and probably you) never want to do again, and the silver linings that magically appear during the most unexpected moments. Gold Nuggets How I navigated a major pivot for my practice when I realized the lockdown in March 2020 wasn’t ending anytime soon.  Why I worked diligently to stay positive this year, even though it was hard at times - and why it required me to take a hiatus from social media. How this year forced me to truly evaluate who my ideal patients were and how to best serve them.  The power of doubling down on self-care - and why getting a business coach and ending business relationships that don’t work both qualify as self-care. 024: How To Host a Patient Challenge with Dr. Ronda Nelson
Challenges are a great way to encourage, inspire, and motivate your patients to achieve tough health goals in a short period of time. They can also help establish your credibility as a practitioner, help you connect with your patients in meaningful ways, and allow you to be the superhero when your patient is struggling and needs a WIN. So, how can you use a challenge with your patients to kick off the new year? How should you structure your challenge, and what do you need to do to manage it and keep it effective? It’s easier than you may think! In today’s episode, we’re discussing everything you need to know to create a challenge designed to educate your patients or help them make serious progress toward achieving health goals. You’ll learn how to craft and run your challenge, whether to charge for this service and how to ensure that your patients will come away from it having learned something and satisfied with their outcome, no matter what it is. Gold Nuggets The unique benefits of hosting challenges for your patients and practice. How to structure and manage a challenge that’s long enough to get results but not so long that your patients will burn out. The two primary types of challenges. Why I don’t recommend weight loss challenges for most practitioners.  Why charging a nominal fee for your challenges can help your patients get better outcomes. 023: Closing Out 2020 and Preparing for 2021!
Think about your closet for a second. If it’s cluttered and full of unused items that have been there for who-knows-how-long, there won’t be space for anything new. Before adding something else, it’s absolutely necessary to get rid of items that are out of style to make room for the new. And the same is true for the clutter graciously donated to each of us in 2020. This year has provided more than its fair share of mental debris in a wide variety of shapes, sizes and colors. In order to make room for an amazing new year, we have to do a little housecleaning!  In this podcast episode, I go over the specific steps I take every single year to set up a productive and profitable new year: get rid of the thoughts and activities that don’t fit, keep the ones that do and make room for grand things to show up in 2021.  Are you ready to join me? Gold Nuggets Look back at 2020 in the most positive light possible and close the book on what has been a difficult year for almost everyone. Think strategically about new opportunities and what areas you want to improve in 2021. Set your objectives for the next year and move into 2021 full of hope, optimism, and possibility. 022: Tech Tools That Make Security Easy with Jeff Evenson – Part 2
Last week, tech expert Jeff Evenson joined the podcast to talk about some of the most common ways that healthcare practitioners fall victim to hackers and data thieves. If you haven’t listened to that episode yet, I’d highly recommend you do so before diving into today’s. And don’t worry if you don’t consider yourself tech-minded - Jeff is extraordinarily good at simplifying the issues and explaining them in ways that are actionable and easy to understand. This week, Jeff and I continue our conversation about how to set strong passwords, best practices for avoiding malware (aka computer viruses), and which tools provide the greatest protection of your privacy! Gold Nuggets How all of our passwords for websites and services create major security issues - and why you should use a password manager like LastPass both in your clinic and in your personal life. How to protect yourself from “insider threats,” including rogue employees. How to prevent malware from compromising your computers. How to safely and securely use cloud services. Why you should always enable 2 Factor Authentication. 021: Preventing Hackers From Obtaining Patient Information with Jeff Evenson – Part 1
The internet allows us to connect with patients like never before - but it also gives bad actors an extraordinary opportunity to compromise our devices and data. Our homes and offices are full of incredible software and hardware, but if you fail to follow basic security practices, you could easily fall prey to attacks that could have serious impacts on your practice and your patients’ lives.  Today’s guest, Jeff Evenson, is my guide to all things nerdy and techy, and he’s here to explain all of this in plain English. He was a cryptologist in the U.S. Navy for 20 years, holds a Bachelor’s in Computer and Information Sciences, a Master’s in Health Arts and Sciences, and has extensive experience in telecommunications, finance, information security, and healthcare. He’s certified in RT, does Reiki, and knows the alternative medicine world just as well as he knows cybersecurity - and thus understands the very real risks that alternative medicine practitioners face. In part one of a two part series, Jeff and I discuss security as it pertains to incoming data, the inherent security risks we all face on the internet, and how to keep prying eyes away from your patient data. Gold Nuggets Why no one should leave the default password set on their home or office router - and how to secure your home network.  How to create a strong password and what services to use if you can’t remember your passwords.  What an Internet of Things (IoT) device is - and how these pose a significant security risk.  How to take action when you find out that a device you own has been affected by a security vulnerability. 020: Planning For a Successful 2021
There’s always some kind of celebration or holiday festivity happening in the weeks between Thanksgiving and Christmas. No wonder why we love the holiday season so much! And one of my favorite things during this time of year is actually planning for the New Year. Ever since my first coach taught me how to close out the prior year and move into the New Year with a clean slate, I got hooked on this type of annual planning and now, it’s become one of my cherished ‘holiday’ traditions. In today’s podcast episode, I’ll walk you through the four steps I take at the end of each year to prepare for the year to come. In about two hours, you’ll be able to create a plan that will help you focus on how you can take better care of yourself, your staff, your patients, and your community while building a practice that’s thriving and sustainable. And it’s super easy to do. Gold Nuggets Why you need a big calendar with big squares on your wall to identify your non-negotiables, your staff birthdays, family activities and your major marketing opportunities. How to plan and execute new initiatives and projects you want to offer in your practice in the year to come. Why you need to get an outside opinion about your plan before you execute - and the best people to ask for advice. Why you need to let your calendar sit for a week before you revisit, reassess, and start to look for things you might have missed.  Why doing this every quarter can help you increase your profitability, impact more people, and grow your practice. 019: Create 4 Weeks of Content in 3 Simple Steps
Some of the most common questions I get from clinicians has to do with their social media marketing. They aren’t sure what to post, when to post or where to get creative ideas about topics their patients would be interested in. And when it comes to social media, without a clear content strategy, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed and paralyzed when you don’t know what to do next.  Fortunately, there’s a solution - and it doesn’t involve diving into extremely complicated metrics, algorithms, or anything else. Everything you need to create compelling, interesting and relevant social posts exists within the four walls of your practice, whether virtual or physical! Today, I’m going to walk you through a simple 3-step process designed to help you create 4 weeks of social media content in a blink. In fact, by the time you’re done, you will most likely have enough content for 3-4 months. Your patients are waiting for your brilliant wisdom to show up and WOW them – and after today’s episode, you’ll be able to do just that! 018: Lessons From a Workaholic: How to Do Less and Get More Done
If you love what you do, it’s easy to become a workaholic. Between creating resources for patients, teaching clinicians how to grow their practices and provide better care for their patients, and keeping my practice running smoothly, it’s easy for a 40-hour week to turn into a 55+ hour week, leaving little time to take care of myself. And that’s definitely not practicing what I preach.   And when you look at the statistics, the motivation to get a handle on our over-burdened schedules is even more compelling. It’s a fact that 4 out of 10 Americans work over 50 hours a week and as a result, have a 33% increased risk of stroke and a 13% increase in coronary artery disease – just to name a few.  So if your work-life balance could use a tune-up, today’s episode is for you. I want to help you rethink what brings value to your life, reduce the number of hours you work, and learn how to achieve more by doing less. Gold Nuggets How working long hours is doing real damage to our physical and mental health. Why multitasking hurts your performance and can result in missing important details. Why clinicians should take breaks throughout the day. How to set hard limits and stop working at established cutoff times. Five things you can do right now to get off the working-too-hard treadmill. 017: Four Ways to Prepare for Unexpected Business Downturn
How prepared is your business to handle uncertainty? 2020 has been a rocky year for many of us. We have patients to care for, but we also have businesses to run that need to generate revenue to care for our families, our staff, and their loved ones. There’s no way to know what’s going to happen tomorrow, so how can we best prepare for uncertainty?  No matter what the future holds, we can take proactive steps to set ourselves up for success.  Today, I want to talk about the four things you need to be doing right now to create a solid foundation for whatever might happen in the future. We will talk about the importance of having a peer group, the best ways to nurture patient relationships, and how to build a financial safety net that will carry you through hard times. Gold Nuggets Why it’s so important to build connections outside of your practice - and how to build a network without coming across as “sales-y” or desperate for referrals.  How to nurture patient relationships when you’re not seeing them in-person on a regular basis - and what makes silence so deadly.  How to prepare for worst-case scenarios and face tough challenges with optimism. 016: My Secret to Running 3 Businesses
All the time, I get asked: how do you leverage your time to get more done, focus on the things you want to do, and spend less time doing the things you don’t want to do?  It’s easy to stay in our own lane and do what we know we can do. However, when we take on work we don’t enjoy, even if it needs to be done, we can find ourselves feeling grumpy, irritable, and overwhelmed. Today, I want to walk you through the three things I do that help me get it all done. Gold Nuggets Why feeling out of balance means you’re doing something you ought not to be doing.  Why I focus on what I’m naturally good at - and why this can be hard for solopreneurs.  How to use time blocking to eliminate distractions and get more done How to delegate, even if you have a tendency to be a micromanager. 015: The Importance of a Good Mentor with Lowell Keppel
Almost every alternative medicine practitioner has encountered road blocks while establishing their wellness clinics. Many of us have experienced the disappointment of hiring a practice management groups only to end up with poor results and no money in the bank account. Growing a practice is not for the faint at heart. There are some intense learning curves for sure.  During the early years of my own practice, I struggled as well. And so did my good friend, Dr. Lowell Keppel. Lowell is as passionate about helping clinicians as he is about helping his patients, which is where my passion is as well. Why? It’s simple: having a good mentor, who has already gone through the hard lessons of practice growth, can be a tremendous asset to someone who wants to side-step the challenges and grow their own practice at lightning speed. Today, Lowell joins the podcast to talk about his role in mentoring clinicians, how he helps new doctors overcome limiting beliefs and create successful practices of their own, and why everyone at any stage of life or business benefits from having a great coach or mentor in their lives. Gold Nuggets Why so many practice management groups overpromise and underdeliver. How Lowell helps new clinicians create a smart, measurable definition of success to set a map for building their practice. 014: 3 Things I Wish I’d Known When I Opened My Clinic
When my oldest daughter was diagnosed with terminal bone cancer, I set out on a journey to find resources and answers to save her life. At the time, I had no clue of the link between our food and our health - and I felt painfully alone on that journey. And several years later, when I finally opened my clinic, I quickly realized there was much more to know. And honestly, it felt overwhelming and very lonely. But now, many years later, after having dedicated so much of my time to help other alternative medicine practitioners, there are three things I wish I’d known when I was getting started. Today, I’m sharing these three key learnings and how you can use them to grow as a practitioner, expand your knowledge base, and better serve your patients. 013: 3 Key Tools to Help Clinicians Stay Organized
Organization and efficiency are important not just in our processes as caregivers, but in our business as well. When we’re not organized, we can’t keep track of where valuable information is when we need it. When we’re not efficient, we spin our wheels and spend our weekends fixing notes and balancing bank statements.  Fortunately, there are many tools we can use to improve our practices, both literally and figuratively. Though I’m not naturally an organized person, I’ve found three incredible and affordable tools that have helped me tremendously. Today, I’m sharing how my team and I use some of my favorite solutions to simplify our workflows and ensure that we have access to important information when we need it. 012: 10 Signs That Your Patient Isn’t a Good Fit and How to Let Them Go
As you build your practice, you want to make sure that you’re finding and connecting with the right patients. But what do you do when you have patients in your practice that aren’t a good fit? How do you let them go, so they can find another practitioner that’s right for them?  I used to lose sleep about how to have these conversations with patients, but I’ve figured out a way to do it gracefully and ensure that everyone wins in the end. Today’s episode is about more than just how to identify great patients. It’s also about what to do when you have one that isn’t right for you - and how to let them go gracefully, to find the care they need without compromising your integrity. Gold Nuggets How to tell if you have a strong connection or relationship with a patient - and signs that you’re not set up for a good long-term relationship.  Why your patients need to trust in your ability to help them get better - and why communication with both you and your staff needs to be mutually respectful.  Why patients that rely on Google for their prognosis and then ask you for support are almost always a bad fit.  How to be honest when you let a patient go, helping them feel listened to and valued as you end the relationship - and even turn some of these patients into your best referrers.  Get Today's Show Notes To get access to today's show notes, including a transcript & links to all the resources mentioned, visit RondaNelson.com/12  Connect with Dr. Ronda Nelson Facebook Instagram YouTube Social Community Monthly Newsletter Rate & Review the Podcast If you enjoyed today’s episode of The Clinical Entrepreneur, hit the subscribe button in Apple Podcasts, (or wherever you listen) so future episodes are automatically downloaded directly to your device. As clinicians, after we finish medical school, we think we’re ready to help and serve people. Then your first real patient walks in the door - and you discover that you don’t yet know anything. [Cue the reality check!] This is why continuing education is so important. If you want to serve people and better meet their needs, you always need to be learning. And having a community of like-minded people to learn and grow with is key to success! Today, I want to give you a proven framework - and seven simple, actionable steps - you can do to up your game and keep learning. 010: Functional Blood Chemistry Sneak Peek: Understanding Vitamin B12, MMA and Folate
As an alternative healthcare practitioner, the more you know about blood chemistry, the more value you can add to a patient’s life. And one of the most common markers we pay attention to is vitamin B12. But there are two other markers that need to be evaluated in conjunction with B12 -  methylmalonic acid (MMA), and folate. However, it may not be intuitive as to how these three markers relate to one another when reviewing your patients’ blood labs. If you use these three markers to guide your dietary, lifestyle and nutritional recommendations, you can help drastically improve patient outcomes. Today’s podcast is a sneak peek from a recent blood chemistry seminar I taught for healthcare professionals. If you want a deeper understanding of how these vitamin B12, methylmalonic acid and folate work together along with tips for explaining them to your patients, this episode will give you a quick primer and is a great place to start. Gold Nuggets Why a B12 excess or deficiency on a blood test can indicate a number of potential conditions, many of which are treatable. What MMA is, how it is linked to B12 levels, and how to interpret irregularities in MMA levels. 009: Using Blood Labs to Grow Your Practice with Virginia Irby
Without education, you can’t expect to position yourself for success. This is especially true when it comes to lab work - a field where so many patients take their results to Google, misinterpret their data, and fail to shape the trajectory of their health in a productive and positive way. When patients can’t make sense of their results, they overreact, adopt unsafe practices, and rarely set themselves up for good long-term outcomes. However, as healthcare providers, we can give our patients the power to deeply understand what lab results really mean - and use this skill to grow our businesses. Dr. Virginia Irby has been doing just that for the last 13 years. Her practice is focused on nutrition, and she has a remarkable gift for helping her patients understand their labs better than their primary care providers. Today, she joins the podcast to walk me through how she uses a free lab consultation to bring new patients into her practice with a 100% conversion rate, the role labs play in follow up appointments and progress tracking, and why her proven methodology keeps patients coming back. Gold Nuggets How to provide massive amounts of value and win patients during a complimentary, 15-minute assessment of their lab results. Why so-called “acceptable ranges” are so flexible - and how to help educate patients about this. How blood labs can be incorporated effectively into virtually any practice. Why Virginia spends lots of time in her consults, either virtually or in-person, making drawings to simplify complicated concepts. Why Virginia is not big on testing, why she almost always knows the answer before she orders a lab test, and her protocol for testing based on patient age. 008: 4 Simple Things You Can do to Create a Stronger Patient Relationship
When a patient has a health issue, before they call their healthcare provider, there’s a good chance that they’ve already turned to Google. Unfortunately, they’ve also probably learned that they’re going to die within the next 48 hours of a wide array of weird, random, and crazy diseases. There’s more misinformation than accurate information when it comes to health out there, and lots of it ends with your patient purchasing a boatload of low-quality supplements and wondering why they’re not improving.  When the patient finally comes to see you, as an alternative medicine practitioner, they give you a barrage of symptoms, and you may think that it’s time to educate them about everything going on with their bodies and recommend your particular supplements. This strategy is all but guaranteed to fail, and it rarely leads to positive, lasting relationships. As clinicians, there are three simple things you need to do to win great patients: listen more than you speak, let them know they’re doing a good job, and provide them with action steps that don’t involve buying herbs, supplements, or tests. Today’s podcast is all about how to do exactly that - and why this strategy helps grow practices and produce better patient outcomes. Gold Nuggets What makes the internet such a dangerous place for patients - and why attempts at self-diagnosis almost never improve outcomes. Why so many clinicians fail to empathize with and honor their patients. How to approach a scared patient who has already jumped to the worst-case scenario and endangered their health by adopting strategies and supplements they read about online.
