Making Sense of High School in Durham
How does a newcomer to the U.S. figure out high school? What are the challenges that young adult refugees face? How do they overcome these challenges? How does the school district shape this process? To answer these questions and more, our team talks to four newcomers about their experiences in Durham Public Schools, from their first days to graduating high school and moving on to the next step. Safi came to the U.S. from the DRC in 2015 and graduated from Riverside High School in 2018. She is now attending community college. Maryam came to the U.S. from Iraq in 2010 and is a senior at Jordan High School. Mustafa came to the U.S. from Iraq in 2010 and graduated from Riverside HS in 2017. He is completing his community college studies. Iqra came to the U.S. from Pakistan in 2018 and graduated from Jordan HS in 2019. She now attends community college and will be attending UNC Chapel Hill next year.
