Episode 33 - Maleeka Marsden of Climate Action Campaign
On the latest San Diego Chronicle Podcast, I catch up with Maleeka Marsden of the Climate Action Campaign to discuss her work with the organization. CAC recently published the 3rd Edition of the Climate Action Report Card, a document that offers an assessment of the region’s climate planning and climate action to help the public and local governments discern patterns and trends across a vast and scattered set of information.  Maleeka and I discuss the creation of that document and then transition topics to the San Diego Green New Deal. Much has been made of this effort in recent months, and I wanted to dig a bit deeper into what is coming down the pipes in the San Diego climate activism movement.

Politics in the Pub LIVE - Post-election Observations From India
It’s good to be with you with our 6th episode and one coming hot off the proverbial press. Sadly we had to postpone our election special due to our original venue being affected by the recent strike action of Unite Here local 30. All you have to do is download our second episode on unionism to understand our actions and that values only mean something when applied. We are happy that a new contract has been ratified and ending a 35 day strike and that in this day and age it’s important to stand with workers who are fighting for better wages, benefits, conditions and job security. So the election happened. Dems took back the house and Trump took back Jim Acosta’s press credentials. You could say he ‘Acosta’d him’ but then that would be a dad joke or fake news. I don’t even know anymore. We wanted to create a pod that gave more of a unique outlook of the midterms, you know, to break through the clutter of precinct numbers, blue waves and recounts in Florida. Well that unique outlook comes from 8,500 miles away and from a group of young Indian leaders who were in town as part of the State Department sponsored International Visitor Leadership Program. This amazing group of  leaders who were made up of elected officials, party operatives and professors travelled to a number of major U.S. cities as they observed and learned about the U.S. Legislative and Political Process. Some of the objectives of this delegations was to discuss the challenges and impact of engaging youth in political and civic activism and the role of media in campaigning in governance. We thank the San Diego Diplomacy Council for facilitating this connection and supporting the recording of this episode. We covered a great deal over our two hour happy hour at Young Hickory in North Park including the under representation of female leadership, the current state of Indo-American relationships and a look at the 2019 Indian elections which is the largest exercise of democracy in the world with over 850 million voters and an election that takes place over several months. We hope you enjoy this as much as we did and join us in tracking the political careers of these extremely passionate, knowledgeable and talented individuals. Now let’s go live at Young Hickory with our latest episode of Politics In The Pub.

Episode 28 - FOMO For Positive Change
In this episode I caught up with Jordan Beane. Jordan and I first met a few months back during the build up to the June primary election at Bay City Brewing Co during a fundraiser he was hosting there for his City Council race. While he didn't quite make it to this November's ballot, his experience as a first time candidate was largely a positive one. In this conversation we talk about what motivated him to run in the first place, San Diego's greatest strengths and biggest challenges, the millennial movement in local politics and so much more. Jordan has a bright future here in the city of San Diego, so listen closely to what he's saying now.

TKF United - Stadium Talk That Rocks: Episode 9
This week the guys sat down with Darren Smith from The Mighty 1090 to talk about the journey that has been the SoccerCitySD vs SDSU West debate from the perspective of the media trying to cover sports in this town. Did SCSD’s vision land for potential voters? Do the Aztecs have the right to expand onto one the most valuable pieces of land the city has? These are questions that hopefully get answered on Nov 6th!

Episode 26 - Sophie Wolfram Returns with Climate Action Campaign Updates
Back in early July we published a pretty comprehensive introduction to the Climate Action Campaign via my friend Sophie Wolfram. Sophie works as the Director of Programs at CAC and the work the organization does in the city of San Diego and the surrounding region is vitally important to ensuring we still have a place to call home for generations to come. In this episode Sophie catches me up on what’s been a busy summer for CAC. We talk about some of the challenges we have with Community Plan Updates around town, transportation master plans, community choice energy aggregation and so much more, as well as some of the victories that the Climate Action Campaign can point towards in recent weeks and on the horizon too.

Politics in the Pub LIVE - Housing Policy We Can Believe In!
Hello and welcome to the fifth edition of the politics in the pub podcast! My name is Dike Anyiwo and unlike my co-host Ryan Ginard who tends to open these shows with wonderful words that include a confession of whichever beer he happens to sipping on at the moment, I am drinking tea this morning as I record this longwinded introduction.  When Ryan and I first started brainstorming about what this pod could be, we agreed that it had to be anchored in relevance. There is no more relevant topic of discussion in California and in San Diego in particular than housing. Whether you approach from the costs of building angle, the affordability of rent, the uphill ascent of attempting to buy, housing for college students, zoning and supply issues or even from the homelessness perspective, the ability for people to find and maintain shelter is one of humanity’s most basic needs.  Housing impacts us all in one way or another, and there is no better panel to tackle that topic than the one assembled for this episode. Maya Rosas and Stefanie Benvenuto are two of San Diego’s leading ladies in the fight to fix our housing problems, and what is apparent in this discussion is that not only are they professionals in this industry, but they are both also incredibly passionate about what San Diego becomes in the weeks, months and years to come. So sit back, pour up and dive into this discussion about all things housing. Live from Bay City Brewing in Point Loma, its Politics in the Pub!

TKF United - Stadium Talk That Rocks: Episode 8
This week the we sit down with Jason Riggs of The San Diego Stadium Coalition and Drew Steck of The San Diego Original Supporters Group (of SoccerCitySD). Jason’s group recently endorsed the SDSU plan and that kicked off a great back and forth about both Measures G and E. The conversation revolved around the city’s lack of leadership, the future of SDSU in our community, whether or not the window for MLS expansion will close, and the possibility of the Chargers or the NFL coming back to town. We also dove a bit deeper into some of the logic (or lack of logic) that drove the Stadium Coalition to endorse Measure G.

Episode 25 - Entry Level Real Estate Development
On this episode I caught up with my friend Dexter Gareau, a fledgling real estate developer and former SDSU student.  Together we talk about San Diego's residential real estate market, home ownership strategies and of course, the future of Mission Valley. I learned more than I expected to and I suspect you will as well. Have a listen!
