What Marketing is Really About and How To Do It Well [Ep. 31]
What do you think of when I say the word marketing?   The word marketing can have a negative connotation sometimes. There are plenty of marketing tactics that feel a little dishonest, spammy, or slimy.    You know your product or service is good and can help others, but how do you get them to pay attention and learn about what you have without compromising your faith or values or feeling like you’re being annoying?   On this episode, I’ll share what marketing is really about, and then go through a few ideas about how to do it WELL.    What Marketing is NOT:   Marketing is not sales. Often, people want to  jump right to the selling before doing the marketing. This is a mistake. They need to be two separate parts of your process.    I use the dating and marriage analogy. Connecting, getting to know each other, and dating are like marketing; popping the question is when you get to sales. You don’t ask someone to marry you when you first meet them! You don’t want to jump into trying to sell to them that quickly either.    Marketing is also not just advertising and promotion. This is only part of marketing, and if it’s all you’re doing, you’re skipping an important part of the marketing process. What is Marketing? Recently, I heard Cathy Heller make this statement on Clubhouse, and I could not agree more: “Marketing is about connecting and clearly communicating what you do.” Marketing is Connecting Marketing starts with connecting. I teach this in my Connection Catalyst System to help clients grow their audiences, and it’s a super important part of the marketing process.   Here’s why: in order to effectively market your product or service, you have to know your target client and their needs. Connecting means figuring out what their struggles are… what their needs are, and how what you’re offering could help.   Another part of connecting that I teach my clients (you get a sneak peak today!) is to collect the words and phrases your potential clients and customers use. If you know how your client speaks then you can use that language in your promotion to reach them effectively.   “Marketing starts with connecting.” -Esther Littlefield   Marketing Is Communicating This is the part of marketing that we think of right away:  FB and YouTube ads, messaging on the radio, podcasts, and TV.    But here’s the thing about all of these methods of communication: they have to be crystal clear. Essentially, it’s the better communicator, not the better product, that wins. (Thanks Donald Miller for making this point many times).   Often our communication is confusing and unclear. We know what we’re talking about and why it’s important, but if we’re not communicating it in a way that makes sense to our potential clients, it just won’t work.   So, marketing starts with connecting with your potential clients, getting into their heads and knowing exactly what they need and want. Then it moves to communicating your message clearly. These two halves of the marketing process will help you gain traction and be effective.   How to Do It Effectively 1. Have a strategy I’ve been in a place where I was trying to be visible everywhere, all the time, and do #allthethings to market my business. This was not a good or sustainable idea. I also didn’t have a clear plan for what happened after clients moved through my marketing process and wanted to work with me. I realized how important it is to have strategies in place.    Here are some examples of having a strategy:   Knowing what you are going to sell at the end of your marketing efforts. Getting really clear about your offer(s) and what it is you want someone to buy. Having a clear path to take someone to the point of buying. This might be having customers go to your website and then to a discovery call. Or it might be that they go from social media to your email list to an offer for a coaching session. Or from a FB ad to an email opt-in then to a small course. You need to know what you want your customer journey to look like. Having a plan for your content marketing. For me, my podcast is my main marketing tool. Then I take what I share on the podcast and repurpose it to FB, which is my main social media platform. Especially if you’re just getting started, I recommend one main content platform (blog, podcast, video) and one main social channel.    “The way to do marketing well is to have a strategy.” -Esther Littlefield 2. Stay in Alignment with Your Personality and Your Values You don’t want to use marketing techniques that are not in line with your faith, or your values. I’m not suggesting that you throw away ideas just because they are uncomfortable...I’ve had my own business coach suggest some ideas that were a little bit out of my comfort zone, but ended up working well for me. There’s a difference between being uncomfortable and being out of alignment with your values.   If you’re not sure about a particular tactic, try putting yourself on the other end. For example, if you’re thinking about cold messaging as part of your marketing process but you wouldn’t want someone cold messaging you...don’t do it!   And don’t try to conform to a system that just isn't true to your own personality. Your message still needs to have you in it.   “Don’t compare where you’re at to...a business that’s been well established for many years.” -Esther Littlefield 3. Learn to Communicate More Effectively To help you with this piece, I’m excited to be sharing my FREE Communicate & Connect Challenge coming up March 1-5.    The challenge will help you come up with the words you can use to clearly communicate what you do and who you help. We’ll work through this together so you feel confident when someone asks you what you do, have the words to create curiosity instead of confusion, and can keep the conversation going to lead people down the path of working with you!   Sign up for the challenge at estherlittlefield.com/challenge.   Connect with Esther: If this podcast was helpful, consider leaving a rating and review on Apple Podcasts or your podcast app. Website Subscribe to my other podcast, The Christian Woman Leadership Podcast Join the FB group Connect on Facebook Connect on Instagram Connect on Clubhouse: @estherl

What Type of Online Business is Right for You? [Ep. 30]
Are you selling the right thing in your business to generate income? Are you building a business that you will enjoy a year or two from now?  What kind of business model are you trying to create?   So often we jump into business focused on our idea for what we want to sell. But if we don’t actually understand where that fits into the overall landscape of online business, we can struggle, and may end up with a business we hate a few years from now.   In this episode I will walk you through HOW you sell something (the business models) and how to decide WHAT you are selling (the product or service), so you can move forward with clarity and confidence. For the full show notes for this episode, please visit my website: http://christianwomanbusiness.com/30 Overview of Online Business Models Service Provider Model Coaching & Consulting Model Course Creator Model Influencer Model Hybrid Models Note: I mention but do not discus in depth another model: e-commerce or product-based model.   Deciding What You Want to Sell The three things you want to consider when deciding what service, product, or skillset to sell, are: your area of expertise (your skills, experience, education; what you’re good at) your passion (something you actually enjoy doing, and could do long term) what others will pay for (if people won’t pay for it, it might be a hobby, but it’s not a viable income option) How to communicate about what you sell and how you sell it:  I’m putting together a FREE 5-day challenge for you coming up in just a couple weeks. In this challenge, you’re going to learn: What to say when someone asks, “so, what do you do?”. How to say it confidently… without confusing them. Plus: the secret sauce that will help set you apart! You might need to start by getting clarity about your message and your ideal listener or reader.   In this episode of the Christian Woman Business Podcast, I’m sharing a strategy session with podcaster Janell Wood. Janell and I chat about her desire to reach her audience with a message of hope and truth.    She shares about some of the practical and mindset challenges that many of us encounter when sharing a message online. We dive into how she can clarify her message, identify her ideal listener more clearly, and start to reach that person. Key points discussed about finding clarity on your message and reaching your ideal audience: Where Janell is at right now [3:00] Clarifying the message [6:00] Who does she want to be listening? [9:00] Finding an angle that sets her podcast apart [15:00] Identifying her ideal audience [19:00] Reaching her person [27:00] Quotes: “It’s going to be hard to grow your audience if you don’t feel confident in the clarity around your message. And if your audience is confused, it’s going to be hard to grow it.”   “We’re trying to be all things to all people, and we don’t really set ourselves apart from other podcasts.”   “You are simply taking the next step that God has called you to take.” Connect with Janell: Finding Something Real Podcast Instagram   Connect with Esther: If this podcast was helpful, consider leaving a rating and review on Apple Podcasts or your podcast app.   Website Christian Business Owners Shining Online Facebook Page LinkedIn Subscribe to my other podcast, The Christian Woman Leadership Podcast This episode was originally published on christianwomanbusiness.com/29.

What Kind of Investment is Right for You and Your Business? [Ep. 28]
How do you decide what kind of investment is right for you and your business? There are so many options in the online space, and it can be overwhelming to try and decide which direction to go.   The good news is that there are some ways to discern what kind of investment to make, and I’m going to share them with you in this episode. I’ll share several of the most common investments you can make, the pros and cons of each, and the typical investment level. I’ll also share some key questions to ask before making your investment. Full show notes can be found at https://christianwomanleadership.com/28.   5 Types of Potential Business Investments Courses Memberships Coaching Masterminds Certifications   How do you decide which investment is right for you? Questions to ask yourself when considering your options: What do you need to learn right now? If it’s a specific skill, a course or certification might be the best option. How long have you been in business? If it’s a shorter time (less than 3 years), you may want to lean towards courses or coaching. If you’ve been in business longer or are more established, look at coaching, membership, or masterminds. Are you a self-starter or do you need accountability? Do you need help with strategy? Then coaching may be the best option. Do you want a network? A mastermind is a good choice. Memberships and group coaching could also provide this. Do you want customized help based on your unique business and goals? Coaching is the way to go. Questions to ask about the program or mentor/coach/trainer: What are their qualifications for teaching this thing?  Do they have some kind of evidence that they have done this with/for others? What’s included in the program? What will you actually get? (example: content, materials, swipe files, coaching calls, etc.) How long do you have access to the coach and/or the materials?  Do you align with their values and methods? What’s the approach of the leader? (Hands on vs. removed) Personally I have invested in all of the 5 types of programs listed above. In some cases, they have not been the best option for me at that time. But almost all of them have benefited my business in one way or another.   What kind of investment is right for you? Even if you’re not sure, I recommend that you start setting aside a % of your income each month for professional development. That way, when you are ready for that next program, you’ll have the money set aside and you’ll be ready to make a wise investment.

The Number One Non-business Thing You Need in Your Business this Year [Ep. 25]
What is the one thing you need in your business this year as a Christian woman business owner or content creator?  While much of what you’re hearing this time of year is about setting goals, dreaming, and planning for your business, I want to share with you something that I believe will make a big difference for you. It’s something that is absolutely necessary as a Christian business owner, and you won’t hear it from many people: discernment. Discernment is necessary for us as believers because there is so much out there that sounds good, but may actually be harmful. For the video teaching I did about discernment, click here.   3 Ways to Practice Discernment in Your Business This Year: 1. Who you are following and taking advice from You don’t have to only take business advice from Christians. But you need to be willing to discern when there are practices or recommendations that do not line up with your faith.   Ask yourself: Who are you listening to podcasts?  Who are you following on social? What types of things are they recommending? Does the majority of what they are saying or teaching line up with your values? Or is a significant portion going against your faith?   When it comes to biz advice, be picky.    2. Types of work or clients you take on   If you are a service provider or coach or consultant, it’s very important to use discernment about the type of work or clients you take on. It’s helpful to pre-decide about this, and one of the best ways to do this is to outline your values.   Consider: What are your guiding values in your business? Are these communicated on your social media, your website, etc?   Secondly, remember you don’t have to say yes to clients. You can turn down work. It may be awkward or uncomfortable, but I promise it is better when you do it upfront rather than wait.   I learned the hard way on this.. I took on clients where it wasn’t a good fit… I had a gut feeling, but I said yes anyway. Then I ended up feeling icky about some of the work I was doing. This is not a good place to be.   So I want you to get clear on your values; make sure they are communicated on your content; then practice discernment when meeting with potential clients, and be willing to say no when necessary.   3. Where to focus your own business efforts   Finally, you need discernment about where to focus your own business efforts. If you are anything like me, you may have lots of possibilities and skills you could use. Or lots of ideas about products and programs you could create.   But you need to ask God for wisdom and discernment about where to focus.    Because here’s the truth that I know, but hate admitting: you cannot do all the things and do them all well. You can do a few things and do them well. And that means some things have to wait and some you have to completely stop doing.   Resources that God provides for us to grow in discernment: The good news is that God provides us with resources that will help us grow in this area. The 5 Questions You Must Answer Before Launching a Podcast [Ep. 21]
One of the biggest reasons that podcasts do not succeed is that they fail to have a clear strategy before they launch. Instead, they get really excited about the idea of having a podcast and they jump in without much of a plan! And then when they aren’t seeing the numbers they expected, they get discouraged and quit. Many podcasts don’t make it past episode 7… it’s called podfading, and it’s quite common. I want to help you avoid that by establishing a clear strategy from the start. And that begins by answering 5 key questions. These questions will help you launch a successful (and sustainable) podcast. And even if you already have a podcast, this episode might be a good chance to re-assess and make sure you are heading in the right direction. Several of these questions are connected, so you’ll want to answer all of them to make sure you get a bird’s eye view of your podcast. Would you like to save time, streamline your business activities, and steward your time wisely? Systems will help you do this, and this episode will get you started with understanding and creating systems in your business. In Episode 11, I shared with you about one of the ways that I’m able to manage the various activities and responsibilities I have, including 2 podcasts, a service-based business, digital products, and more. And today I’m sharing the second thing that truly helps me keep my business running: systems.   For the full show notes for this episode, go to christianwomanbusiness.com/12   1. What is a system? A system is the process you use to complete a series of tasks that all result in the final product. It’s usually going to be several aspects that are interconnected to reach a completed project or task.   2. Why do you need systems in your business? Systems will save you time Systems make it easier to delegate work   Simply stated, creating systems in your business is necessary if you want to grow. Up to a certain point, you can manage winging it and going with the flow. But if you want to truly take your business to the next level, then you need systems.   And as a Christian, there’s another perspective here. I believe systems help us to be a good steward of the time God has given us. If you can systematize some of the things in your business, that allows you to have time to focus on some of the more important things, like sharing your message or spending time with your family.   “Systems help us to be a good steward of the time God has given us.”   3. When do you need systems in your business? You need a system when you have something that you will be repeating in your business on an ongoing basis. Anytime you find yourself doing something over and over, it’s time to create a system.   Another time you need a system is when you start to feel overloaded with everything you have going on in your business. Systems will help you streamline what’s happening and get really clear on the important steps that have to be done.   4. Aspects of your business that might need systems   Content. Creating content for your blog, podcast, or social media can benefit from having a system set up.  Client communication. If you work with clients, you need a system in place to manage the process from start to finish.  Launching products or programs. If you are someone who is creating digital products or even group programs, you can create a repeatable system rather than reinventing the wheel every time.   Those are just a few examples of the types of things within your business that can benefit from a system.   5. How to create systems in your business   There are 3 basic approaches to creating systems: You wing it every week and hope you don’t forget something important You go by memory and just do all the steps because they are in your head You have a system documented and the steps are outlined for each phase of the process   My hope from this episode is that you see the value in working towards the third approach, even if you’re not naturally organized.   Steps to creating a system in your business: Document every single step of what you do from start to finish. It will be annoying at first, but trust me, it’s worth it!  If you prefer, you can create a screen sharing video of the process if you are more of a visual creative thinker. If you do a video share, you’ll then need to have someone on your team go back and document the steps. Put the system into a tool you will actually use. I love Trello for documenting my systems. Make sure there are people assigned to the phases/tasks. Set up due dates for each task or phase, so that the person assigned (even if it’s you) knows when to get the items done each week. Lastly, use the system! It might be tempting to skip using it especially if you are solo. But I highly recommend getting into the habit of using the system you create so that you are ready to pass on certain parts when you hire or outsource. Also, you will feel less overwhelmed if you do this because you will always know where you are at with each project or process you are working on! Next Steps for Creating Systems in Your Business:   I have created a free video series for you on using my favorite tool, Trello, to manage your business or life, and I’ve even shown you the basics of creating a system within Trello.   This is broken down into a few short videos so that it’s not overwhelming, and it’s totally free. What is the best way to grow your business and audience online? You might be surprised with my answer. In this episode, I’m sharing with you the key to growing your business online. This one thing helped me meet and exceed my revenue goals when I first started my service-based business. And it’s something that many people overlook in the online space, especially when trying to achieve “passive income”. So, you may be wondering: what is it?? The best way to grow your business online is through people & relationships! Real, authentic relationships are the key to growing your business online. Real relationships have the power to do things that marketing strategies, systems, and tools cannot do. Relationships and people are one of the points of the Shine Online Framework that I discussed in Episode 2, and today I want to go a little deeper into how to actually build these relationships. For the full show notes for this episode, go to christianwomanbusiness.com/10   Key Points Discussed: Are online relationships real?
