Final Alignment Of The Nations Pt 5 Israel CSN 0130
Today we continue our series, The Final Alignment Of The Nations. Previously we reviewed Israel’s history beginning with Abraham up through Israel’s modern history. Today we review God’s sovereign plan for Israel, past present and future. Scripture testifies that Israel does indeed have a future and that events over the last 100 years are fulfillment’s of Biblical prophecy. For me, Israel provides clear and sure evidence of God’s existence and inerrancy of his Word. Upon Israel’s exodus from Egypt the Israelites spent 13 months at Mount Sinai, receiving the Sinai Covenant, the Torah, plans for the Mishkan or tabernacle, and many other instructions and laws. However, Israel’s lack of faith resulted in their wandering in the wilderness for 40 years. Afterwards, with a new generation, God brought them near to Jericho, East of the Jordan. Before crossing the Jordan and beginning the conquest of the land, Moses carefully detailed what would happen if Israel was obedient and if they were disobedient to God. Deuteronomy 28:1 “Now it shall be, if you diligently obey the LORD your God, being careful to do all His commandments which I command you today, the LORD your God will set you high above all the nations of the earth. 2 “All these blessings will come upon you and overtake you if you obey the LORD your God: … 13 “The LORD will make you the head and not the tail, and you only will be above, and you will not be underneath, if you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I charge you today, to observe them carefully, … 15 “But it shall come about, if you do not obey the LORD your God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes with which I charge you today, that all these curses will come upon you and overtake you: … 37 “You shall become a horror, a proverb, and a taunt among all the people where the LORD drives you. … 63 “It shall come about that as the LORD delighted over you to prosper you, and multiply you, so the LORD will delight over you to make you perish and destroy you; and you will be torn from the land where you are entering to possess it. 64 “Moreover, the LORD will scatter you among all peoples, from one end of the earth to the other end of the earth; and there you shall serve other gods, wood and stone, which you or your fathers have not known. Unfortunately, Israel fulfilled the words of Moses. Israel crossed the Jordan around 1377 BC and 396 years later the northern 10 tribes were dispersed by Assyria. God’s word is true, and although it took 396 years of disobedience God fulfilled his promise. God scattered the Jews among the nations. Then in 525 BC the first group of the southern tribes were deported to Egypt and by 506 BC Judah falls and the temple is destroyed, 871 years after the declaration of Moses. God is longsuffering but his words will be fulfilled. Ezekiel also refers to the prophetic words issued in the wilderness: Ezekiel 20:22 “But I withdrew My hand and acted for the sake of My name, that it should not be profaned in the sight of the nations in whose sight I had brought them out. 23 “Also I swore to them in the wilderness that I would scatter them among the nations and disperse them among the lands, 24 because they had not observed My ordinances, but had rejected My statutes and had profaned My sabbaths, and their eyes were on the idols of their fathers. All these things came to pass and Israel was scattered, however, God promises to change their hearts. They will become obedient and live in the land. Deuteronomy 30:1 “So it shall be when all of these things have come upon you, the blessing and the curse which I have set before you, and you call them to mind in all nations where the LORD your God has banished you, 2 and you return to the LORD your God and obey Him with all your heart and soul according to all that I command you today, you and your sons, 3 then the LORD your God will restore you from captivity, and have compassion on you, and will gather you again from all the peoples where the LORD your God has scattered you. … 6 “Moreover the LORD your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your descendants, to love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live. We are in the midst of this prophetic fulfillment. As we examined in our historical review God has been bringing back the Jews to Israel. In 2013 Israel became the largest population center of Jews with over six million, out pacing the US. Their hearts though have yet to be circumcised. There are many passages that speak of Israel’s return to the land, too many to list them all but here are a few: Jeremiah 7:5 “For if you truly amend your ways and your deeds, if you truly practice justice between a man and his neighbor, 6 if you do not oppress the alien, the orphan, or the widow, and do not shed innocent blood in this place, nor walk after other gods to your own ruin, 7 then I will let you dwell in this place, in the land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever. Jeremiah 25:5 saying, ‘Turn now everyone from his evil way and from the evil of your deeds, and dwell on the land which the LORD has given to you and your forefathers forever and ever; The phrase Le-min olam ve-ad olam is normally used to describe God, but is also used twice, as we have just read, to describe Israel’s possession of the land. This tells there is a time to come in which Israel’s possession of the land will not be interrupted. Isaiah 60:18 “Violence will not be heard again in your land, Nor devastation or destruction within your borders; But you will call your walls salvation, and your gates praise. 19 “No longer will you have the sun for light by day, Nor for brightness will the moon give you light; But you will have the LORD for an everlasting light, And your God for your glory. 20 “Your sun will no longer set, Nor will your moon wane; For you will have the LORD for an everlasting light, And the days of your mourning will be over. 21 “Then all your people will be righteous; They will possess the land forever, The branch of My planting, The work of My hands, That I may be glorified. 22 “The smallest one will become a clan, And the least one a mighty nation. I, the LORD, will hasten it in its time.” Jeremiah 16:14 “Therefore behold, days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when it will no longer be said, ‘As the LORD lives, who brought up the sons of Israel out of the land of Egypt,’ 15 but, ‘As the LORD lives, who brought up the sons of Israel from the land of the north and from all the countries where He had banished them.’ For I will restore them to their own land which I gave to their fathers. Jeremiah 23:6 “In His days Judah will be saved, And Israel will dwell securely; And this is His name by which He will be called, ‘The LORD our righteousness.’ Jeremiah 24:6 ‘For I will set My eyes on them for good, and I will bring them again to this land; and I will build them up and not overthrow them, and I will plant them and not pluck them up. Jeremiah 30:18 “Thus says the LORD, ‘Behold, I will restore the fortunes of the tents of Jacob And have compassion on his dwelling places; And the city will be rebuilt on its ruin, And the palace will stand on its rightful place. Jeremiah 32:36 “Now therefore thus says the LORD God of Israel concerning this city of which you say, ‘It is given into the hand of the king of Babylon by sword, by famine and by pestilence.’ 37 “Behold, I will gather them out of all the lands to which I have driven them in My anger, in My wrath and in great indignation; and I will bring them back to this place and make them dwell in safety. 38 “They shall be My people, and I will be their God; 39 and I will give them one heart and one way, that they may fear Me always, for their own good and for the good of their children after them. 40 “I will make an everlasting covenant with them that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; and I will put the fear of Me in their hearts so that they will not turn away from Me. 41 “I will rejoice over them to do them good and will faithfully plant them in this land with all My heart and with all My soul. 42 “For thus says the LORD, ‘Just as I brought all this great disaster on this people, so I am going to bring on them all the good that I am promising them. Ezekiel 28:25 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “When I gather the house of Israel from the peoples among whom they are scattered, and will manifest My holiness in them in the sight of the nations, then they will live in their land which I gave to My servant Jacob. 26 “They will live in it securely; and they will build houses, plant vineyards and live securely when I execute judgments upon all who scorn them round about them. Then they will know that I am the LORD their God. Ezekiel 34:11 For thus says the Lord GOD, “Behold, I Myself will search for My sheep and seek them out. 12 “As a shepherd cares for his herd in the day when he is among his scattered sheep, so I will care for My sheep and will deliver them from all the places to which they were scattered on a cloudy and gloomy day. 13 “I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries and bring them to their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the streams, and in all the inhabited places of the land. 14 “I will feed them in a good pasture, and their grazing ground will be on the mountain heights of Israel. There they will lie down on good grazing ground and feed in rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. 15 “I will feed My flock and I will lead them to rest,” declares the Lord GOD. 16 “I will seek the lost, bring back the scattered, bind up the broken and strengthen the sick; but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with judgment. 17 “As for you, My flock, thus says the Lord GOD, ‘Behold, I will judge between one sheep and another, between the rams and the male goats. Ezekiel 37:21 “Say to them, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “Behold, I will take the sons of Israel from among the nations where they have gone, and I will gather them from every side and bring them into their own land; 22 and I will make them one nation in the land, on the mountains of Israel; and one king will be king for all of them; and they will no longer be two nations and no longer be divided into two kingdoms. 23 “They will no longer defile themselves with their idols, or with their detestable things, or with any of their transgressions; but I will deliver them from all their dwelling places in which they have sinned, and will cleanse them. And they will be My people, and I will be their God. 24 “My servant David will be king over them, and they will all have one shepherd; and they will walk in My ordinances and keep My statutes and observe them. 25 “They will live on the land that I gave to Jacob My servant, in which your fathers lived; and they will live on it, they, and their sons and their sons’ sons, forever; and David My servant will be their prince forever. 26 “I will make a covenant of peace with them; it will be an everlasting covenant with them. And I will place them and multiply them, and will set My sanctuary in their midst forever. 27 “My dwelling place also will be with them; and I will be their God, and they will be My people. 28 “And the nations will know that I am the LORD who sanctifies Israel, when My sanctuary is in their midst forever.”‘” Ezekiel 39:27 “When I bring them back from the peoples and gather them from the lands of their enemies, then I shall be sanctified through them in the sight of the many nations. 28 “Then they will know that I am the LORD their God because I made them go into exile among the nations, and then gathered them again to their own land; and I will leave none of them there any longer. 29 “I will not hide My face from them any longer, for I will have poured out My Spirit on the house of Israel,” declares the Lord GOD. Micah 2:12 “I will surely assemble all of you, Jacob, I will surely gather the remnant of Israel. I will put them together like sheep in the fold; Like a flock in the midst of its pasture They will be noisy with men. 13 “The breaker goes up before them; They break out, pass through the gate and go out by it. So their king goes on before them, And the LORD at their head.” Micah 4: 6 “In that day,” declares the LORD, “I will assemble the lame And gather the outcasts, Even those whom I have afflicted. 7 “I will make the lame a remnant And the outcasts a strong nation, And the LORD will reign over them in Mount Zion From now on and forever. The city of Jerusalem was also torn from Israel’s possession. In 70 AD, following 4 years of Jewish rebellion, Titus penetrated the walls of Jerusalem and burned the city and temple. Israel was dispossessed of Jerusalem just as Yeshua prophesied: Luke 21:20 “But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then recognize that her desolation is near. 21 “Then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains, and those who are in the midst of the city must leave, and those who are in the country must not enter the city; 22 because these are days of vengeance, so that all things which are written will be fulfilled. 23 “Woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days; for there will be great distress upon the land and wrath to this people; 24 and they will fall by the edge of the sword, and will be led captive into all the nations; and Jerusalem will be trampled under foot by the Gentiles until the times of the Gentiles are fulfilled. This was fulfilled by Rome in 70 AD, but this was not to be permanent, only until “the times of the gentiles are fulfilled”. In fact we are told that at the last of these last of days Jerusalem will be possessed by Jews once again. Zechariah 14:1 Behold, a day is coming for the LORD when the spoil taken from you will be divided among you. 2 For I will gather all the nations against Jerusalem to battle, and the city will be captured, the houses plundered, the women ravished and half of the city exiled, but the rest of the people will not be cut off from the city. 3 Then the LORD will go forth and fight against those nations, as when He fights on a day of battle. 4 In that day His feet will stand on the Mount of Olives, which is in front of Jerusalem on the east; and the Mount of Olives will be split in its middle from east to west by a very large valley, so that half of the mountain will move toward the north and the other half toward the south. Zechariah 13:8 “It will come about in all the land,” Declares the LORD, “That two parts in it will be cut off and perish; But the third will be left in it. 9 “And I will bring the third part through the fire, Refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, And I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are My people,’ And they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.'” Israel was prophesied to possess the city once again, before the great and final battle of this age. True to God’s word this has happened – Israel is once again in possession of Jerusalem. On June 7, 1967, on the third day of the Six Day War, Israel gained control of Jerusalem from Jordan after fierce fighting. Israel’s decision to take control of the city was not a goal entering the war. In fact they begged Jordan not to enter the war. God, though, is in control, He caused Jordan to enter the war with the result of Israel resting control of Jerusalem. The last days will not be easy. In fact, we learn that Israel will suffer much in the last of the last days but a remnant will survive. Matthew 24:15 “Therefore when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION which was spoken of through Daniel the prophet, standing in the holy place (let the reader understand), 16 then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 17 “Whoever is on the housetop must not go down to get the things out that are in his house. 18 “Whoever is in the field must not turn back to get his cloak. 19 “But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 20 “But pray that your flight will not be in the winter, or on a Sabbath. 21 “For then there will be a great tribulation, such as has not occurred since the beginning of the world until now, nor ever will. 22 “Unless those days had been cut short, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short. Mark 13:14 “But when you see the ABOMINATION OF DESOLATION standing where it should not be (let the reader understand), then those who are in Judea must flee to the mountains. 15 “The one who is on the housetop must not go down, or go in to get anything out of his house; 16 and the one who is in the field must not turn back to get his coat. 17 “But woe to those who are pregnant and to those who are nursing babies in those days! 18 “But pray that it may not happen in the winter. 19 “For those days will be a time of tribulation such as has not occurred since the beginning of the creation which God created until now, and never will. 20 “Unless the Lord had shortened those days, no life would have been saved; but for the sake of the elect, whom He chose, He shortened the days. This will occur midway through Daniel’s 70th week, a seven year period at the end of this age. The spirit of Antichrist will covenant with Israel a peace deal but break it midway through. Daniel 9:27 “And he will make a firm covenant with the many for one week, but in the middle of the week he will put a stop to sacrifice and grain offering; and on the wing of abominations will come one who makes desolate, even until a complete destruction, one that is decreed, is poured out on the one who makes desolate.” Yet to occur will be the institution of the sacrificial system. This will require either a rebuilt temple, a Mishkan, or perhaps simply an altar on the Temple Mount. The remnant will be divinely protected by God. Revelation 12:1 A great sign appeared in heaven: a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and on her head a crown of twelve stars; 2 and she was with child; and she cried out, being in labor and in pain to give birth. … 6 Then the woman fled into the wilderness where she had a place prepared by God, so that there she would be nourished for one thousand two hundred and sixty days. … 12 “For this reason, rejoice, O heavens and you who dwell in them. Woe to the earth and the sea, because the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, knowing that he has only a short time.” 13 And when the dragon saw that he was thrown down to the earth, he persecuted the woman who gave birth to the male child. 14 But the two wings of the great eagle were given to the woman, so that she could fly into the wilderness to her place, where she was nourished for a time and times and half a time, from the presence of the serpent. 15 And the serpent poured water like a river out of his mouth after the woman, so that he might cause her to be swept away with the flood. 16 But the earth helped the woman, and the earth opened its mouth and drank up the river which the dragon poured out of his mouth. 17 So the dragon was enraged with the woman, and went off to make war with the rest of her children, who keep the commandments of God and hold to the testimony of Jesus. Joel 2:30 “I will display wonders in the sky and on the earth, Blood, fire and columns of smoke. 31 “The sun will be turned into darkness And the moon into blood Before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes. 32 “And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD Will be delivered; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be those who escape, As the LORD has said, Even among the survivors whom the LORD calls. At the end of this age and beginning of the next God will fully enact his new covenant with Israel. Jeremiah 21:31 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah, 32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD. 33 “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the LORD, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people. 34 “They will not teach again, each man his neighbor and each man his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,’ for they will all know Me, from the least of them to the greatest of them,” declares the LORD, “for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more.” Jeremiah 33:7 ‘I will restore the fortunes of Judah and the fortunes of Israel and will rebuild them as they were at first. 8 ‘I will cleanse them from all their iniquity by which they have sinned against Me, and I will pardon all their iniquities by which they have sinned against Me and by which they have transgressed against Me. Ezekiel 11:17 “Therefore say, ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “I will gather you from the peoples and assemble you out of the countries among which you have been scattered, and I will give you the land of Israel.”‘ 18 “When they come there, they will remove all its detestable things and all its abominations from it. 19 “And I will give them one heart, and put a new spirit within them. And I will take the heart of stone out of their flesh and give them a heart of flesh, 20 that they may walk in My statutes and keep My ordinances and do them. Then they will be My people, and I shall be their God. Ezekiel 36:24 “For I will take you from the nations, gather you from all the lands and bring you into your own land. 25 “Then I will sprinkle clean water on you, and you will be clean; I will cleanse you from all your filthiness and from all your idols. 26 “Moreover, I will give you a new heart and put a new spirit within you; and I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. 27 “I will put My Spirit within you and cause you to walk in My statutes, and you will be careful to observe My ordinances. 28 “You will live in the land that I gave to your forefathers; so you will be My people, and I will be your God. Then, when we enter the millennial age Israel will at long last become the seat of global power, where David will be king and Yeshua Meshiach reigns. Hosea 3:4 For the sons of Israel will remain for many days without king or prince, without sacrifice or sacred pillar and without ephod or household idols. 5 Afterward the sons of Israel will return and seek the LORD their God and David their king; and they will come trembling to the LORD and to His goodness in the last days. The millennial kingdom will be a time of peace, righteous judgement, and Israel as the seat of power. Isaiah 11:1 Then a shoot will spring from the stem of Jesse, And a branch from his roots will bear fruit. 2 The Spirit of the LORD will rest on Him, The spirit of wisdom and understanding, The spirit of counsel and strength, The spirit of knowledge and the fear of the LORD. 3 And He will delight in the fear of the LORD, And He will not judge by what His eyes see, Nor make a decision by what His ears hear; 4 But with righteousness He will judge the poor, And decide with fairness for the afflicted of the earth; And He will strike the earth with the rod of His mouth, And with the breath of His lips He will slay the wicked. 5 Also righteousness will be the belt about His loins, And faithfulness the belt about His waist. 6 And the wolf will dwell with the lamb, And the leopard will lie down with the young goat, And the calf and the young lion and the fatling together; And a little boy will lead them. 7 Also the cow and the bear will graze, Their young will lie down together, And the lion will eat straw like the ox. 8 The nursing child will play by the hole of the cobra, And the weaned child will put his hand on the viper’s den. 9 They will not hurt or destroy in all My holy mountain, For the earth will be full of the knowledge of the LORD As the waters cover the sea. Isaiah 66:22 “For just as the new heavens and the new earth Which I make will endure before Me,” declares the LORD, “So your offspring and your name will endure. 23 “And it shall be from new moon to new moon And from sabbath to sabbath, All mankind will come to bow down before Me,” says the LORD. 24 “Then they will go forth and look On the corpses of the men Who have transgressed against Me. For their worm will not die And their fire will not be quenched; And they will be an abhorrence to all mankind.” Joel 3:17 Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, Dwelling in Zion, My holy mountain. So Jerusalem will be holy, And strangers will pass through it no more. 18 And in that day The mountains will drip with sweet wine, And the hills will flow with milk, And all the brooks of Judah will flow with water; And a spring will go out from the house of the LORD To water the valley of Shittim. 19 Egypt will become a waste, And Edom will become a desolate wilderness, Because of the violence done to the sons of Judah, In whose land they have shed innocent blood. 20 But Judah will be inhabited forever And Jerusalem for all generations. Zechariah 8:4 “Thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘Old men and old women will again sit in the streets of Jerusalem, each man with his staff in his hand because of age. 5 ‘And the streets of the city will be filled with boys and girls playing in its streets.’ 6 “Thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘If it is too difficult in the sight of the remnant of this people in those days, will it also be too difficult in My sight?’ declares the LORD of hosts. 7 “Thus says the LORD of hosts, ‘Behold, I am going to save My people from the land of the east and from the land of the west; 8 and I will bring them back and they will live in the midst of Jerusalem; and they shall be My people, and I will be their God in truth and righteousness.’ Amos 9:11 “In that day I will raise up the fallen booth of David, And wall up its breaches; I will also raise up its ruins And rebuild it as in the days of old; 12 That they may possess the remnant of Edom And all the nations who are called by My name,” Declares the LORD who does this. 13 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the LORD, “When the plowman will overtake the reaper And the treader of grapes him who sows seed; When the mountains will drip sweet wine And all the hills will be dissolved. 14 “Also I will restore the captivity of My people Israel, And they will rebuild the ruined cities and live in them; They will also plant vineyards and drink their wine, And make gardens and eat their fruit. 15 “I will also plant them on their land, And they will not again be rooted out from their land Which I have given them,” Says the LORD your God. Zephaniah 3:19 “Behold, I am going to deal at that time With all your oppressors, I will save the lame And gather the outcast, And I will turn their shame into praise and renown In all the earth. 20 “At that time I will bring you in, Even at the time when I gather you together; Indeed, I will give you renown and praise Among all the peoples of the earth, When I restore your fortunes before your eyes,” Says the LORD. Israel indeed does have a future in God’s divine plan and his plan will not be thwarted. God Bless. Final Alignment Of The Nations Pt 4 Israel CSN 0129
Today we continue our series on the Final Alignment Of The Nations, with today’s episode being part four. As we patiently await the return of Yeshua HaMeshiach, Jesus the Messiah, we know that when that time approaches, Gog of Magog will invade Israel along with his confederation. This invasion is also known as the Battle of Armageddon: Ezekiel 38:10 ‘Thus says the Lord GOD, “It will come about on that day, that thoughts will come into your mind and you will devise an evil plan, 11 and you will say, ‘I will go up against the land of unwalled villages. I will go against those who are at rest, that live securely, all of them living without walls and having no bars or gates, 12 to capture spoil and to seize plunder, to turn your hand against the waste places which are now inhabited, and against the people who are gathered from the nations, who have acquired cattle and goods, who live at the center of the world.’ Revelation 16:13 And I saw coming out of the mouth of the dragon and out of the mouth of the beast and out of the mouth of the false prophet, three unclean spirits like frogs; 14 for they are spirits of demons, performing signs, which go out to the kings of the whole world, to gather them together for the war of the great day of God, the Almighty. 15 (“Behold, I am coming like a thief. Blessed is the one who stays awake and keeps his clothes, so that he will not walk about naked and men will not see his shame.”) 16 And they gathered them together to the place which in Hebrew is called Har-Magedon. Just prior to this invasion there will need to be a final alignment of the nations as foretold by Ezekiel, Daniel, John, and other Bible prophets. In other words all the involved nations must exist and be politically aligned as dictated by prophecy and God’s sovereign plan. I’m confident we are not at that point yet and Yeshua’s return is not imminent, but the days are approaching. These days are called HaAcharit HaYamim, The Last Days. Previously, in Episode 127, we reviewed Israel’s Biblical and ancient history, then in Episode 128 we continued with Israel’s modern history up to the rebirth of Modern Israel. That date was May 14th, 1948 when Israel declared its independence and then eleven minutes later President Harry Truman and the United States recognized the new state. Today we continue with Israel’s modern history up through the present day. Next time we will review Israel’s current position in light of prophecy, prophecies fulfilled and yet to be fulfilled. Not only will this historical information provide a basis as we look to the future but also prove the divine inspiration of The Words of The God. Truly the rebirth and continued existence is nothing less than divine providence and proof of the existence of a single supreme being, Yehovah. Much of the following information comes from the Jewish Virtual Library and My Jewish Learning. May 14, 1948 – Declaration of Independence of the State of Israel May 19, 1948 – War of Independence, May 1948-July 1949 The War of Independence was a defensive war to prevent the destruction of the fledgling Jewish state in the face of overwhelming Arab aggression. Palestinian Arabs and their allies know it as the Nakba (catastrophe), the establishment of Jewish rule in Palestine. There were in reality two separate conflicts; a civil war between Palestine’s Jews and Arabs from November 1947 to May 14, 1948 when Israel declared its independence. This was followed by the invasion of five Arab armies, initiating a war which until July 1949. The first challenge faced by the newly formed Israel Defense Forces was to rebuff the Arab attack, defending Jewish settlements until the arrival of reinforcements. The first month of the war was marked by heavy fighting against Jordan’s Arab Legion in Jerusalem; by the end of May the Jordanians had conquered the Old City and expelled its Jewish inhabitants. Syria’s advance into the Galilee was repulsed by the inhabitants of Kibbutz Degania, and the Egyptian invasion was blocked just north of Gaza at Kibbutz Yad Mordechai. Following a month-long truce brokered by the United Nations, hostilities resumed in July 1948. In Operation Dani, the IDF broke the siege of Jerusalem by capturing Lod and Ramle, two Arab towns in the Jerusalem corridor. In October, following a second UN-sponsored truce, the IDF captured the upper Galilee and drove the Egyptian army out of the Negev by December. In March 1949 Israeli forces completed their conquest of the southern part of the country by capturing Eilat. The War of Independence was concluded by the signing of armistice agreements between Israel and the surrounding Arab states. Israel was left in control of 78 percent of mandatory Palestine — around 50 percent more than it had been allocated in the partition plan. The remaining 22 percent was split between Jordan (West Bank and East Jerusalem) and Egypt (Gaza Strip). An independent Palestine was never established, and no Arab state recognized Israel’s existence. Israel’s troops numbered twice as many as those under Arab command. Moreover, partly as a result of the high number of World War II veterans in its ranks, the IDF benefited from better training and organization than its adversaries had. Ben Gurion referred to the Arab armies as Israel’s secret weapon: “They are such incompetents, it is difficult to imagine.” The Jews paid a high price for their victory. More than 6,000 Israelis — 1 percent of the population — were killed. Many of the casualties were refugees and Holocaust survivors, newly arrived in the country. December 17, 1948 – Beginning of “Operation Magic Carpet” to bring Yemenite Jews to Israel Operation Magic Carpet In May 1949, when the Imam of Yemen agreed to let 45,000 of the 46,000 Jews in his country leave, Israeli transport planes flew them “home” in Operation Magic Carpet. The Yemenite Jews, mostly children, were brought to Israel on some 380 flights. This was one of the most wonderful and complex immigration operations the state has ever known. British and American planes airlifted the Jews from Aden, the capital of Yemen, when they reached the city from all over Yemen after extremely dangerous and risky journeys. The operation was secret and was released to the media only several months after its completion. January 13, 1949 – Jerusalem is declared the capitol of Israel and is divided under Israeli and Jordanian rule As part of the armistice talks following the War Of Independence, Jerusalem is divided. May 11, 1949 – Israel admitted to United Nations as 59th member December 13, 1949 – Government decides to hold its Knesset sessions in Jerusalem and declares Jerusalem to be Israel’s capital January 23, 1950 – Knesset by 60-2 vote, establishes Jerusalem as Israel’s capital April 24, 1950 – Jordan annexes West Bank, including East Jerusalem In May 1948 the Arab Legion overran the eastern part of Jerusalem and occupied the Old City and its Holy Places. During the nineteen years of Jordanian administration, Jordan refused to honor its undertaking in the armistice agreement to accord free access to the Holy Places and to cultural institutions, and use of the Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives. Jews were barred from the Old City and denied access to the Western Wall and other Holy Places. The Jewish Quarter in the Old City was destroyed; fifty-eight synagogues were also destroyed or desecrated. Thousands of tombstones in the Jewish cemetery on the Mount of Olives were destroyed to pave a road and build fences and latrines in Jordanian army camps. In April 1950, Jordan annexed the areas it had occupied by military force in 1948. July 20, 1951 – King Abdullah of Jordan is assassinated at the al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem on suspicion of planning peace talks with Israel. 1954 – Yad Vashem Holocaust museum opens January 1956 – Nasser announces new constitution for Egypt and pledges to re-conquer Palestine July 1956 – Nasser nationalizes the Suez Canal Nasser nationalized the Suez Canal on July 26, 1956. The nationalization of the canal took the world by surprise, especially the British and French stockholders who owned the Suez Canal Company. Although Nasser promised that the company would be compensated for its loss, Britain, France, and Israel began plotting to take back the canal and overthrow Nasser as well. Britain, France and Israel united in secret in what was to become known as the tripartite collusion, something that they denied publicly for many years. Arrangements were made for Israel to make the initial invasion of Egypt and overtake one side of the Suez Canal. The British and French attempted to follow the Israeli invasion with diplomacy, but they were unsuccessful, so they were forced to send in troops to occupy the canal. However, the action on the part of the tripartite collusion was not viewed in favor by the US or the Soviet Union since their intervention signified their predominance in the area. The troops were withdrawn from the Canal Zone in December under the direction of the United Nations. The canal was returned to Egypt’s possession and reparations were paid by Egypt under the supervision of the World Bank. October 25, 1956 – Egypt, Syria and Jordan announce establishment of unified military command for “war of destruction against Israel” October 29, 1956 – Sinai Campaign launched with Great Britain and France 1957 – France helps Israel create nuclear research program in Dimona; a nuclear reactor is constructed 1958 – The first supermarket opens in Tel Aviv on Ben-Yehuda Street 1959 – Fatah is established by Yasser Arafat and associates 1960 –  Adolf Eichmann is captured in Argentina by Israeli agents of the Mossad Adolf Eichmann On Trial In Israel, 1961 In 1934 Adolf Eichmann was appointed to the Jewish section of the “security services” of the SS. From then on he became deeply involved with the formulation and operation of the “final solution to the Jewish question”. He drew up the idea of deportation of Jews into ghettos, and went about concentrating Jews in isolated areas with murderous efficiency. He took great pride in the role he played in the death of 6 million mainly European Jews. Adolf Eichmann stood trial before an Israeli court in 1961. The trial, with the recounting of the ghastly crimes the Nazis perpetrated on the Jews, brought out a tumultuous emotional response among the Israeli public and the Jewish people as a whole. Eichmann was hanged on May 31, 1962. He has the distinction of being the first and only person in Israel to receive the death sentence. 1962 – Archaeological excavations commence at Masada 1964 – The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is founded in Jordanian-controlled East Jerusalem The Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO) is undoubtedly one of the most infamous terrorist organizations around the world. Created in 1964 during the Arab League Summit in Cairo, the PLO’s originally-stated goal was the “liberation of Palestine” through armed struggle while seeking to destroy the existence of Zionism in the Middle East. By 1967, the PLO had decided that their primary goal was the destruction of the State of Israel. It was at this time that Yasser Arafat and his group, Fatah, took over the leadership of the PLO. Over the next ten years, this goal was the primary focus of the massive terrorist campaign by which their reputation was formed. Things began to change quickly when the PLO gained international recognition from the United Nations as the primary representative of the Palestinian people. Arafat deftly manipulated the organization from one perceived by the West as barbaric into one considered a freedom movement with legitimate claims. Israel, perhaps sensing the growing sympathy, redoubled its efforts to eliminate the Palestinian threat. By 1988, Arafat had taken the diplomatic road one step further when he not only announced the right of the state of Israel to exist but renounced PLO terrorism. The perceived commitment to these ideals caused Israel to finally agree to serious talks with the PLO. The result of these discussions was that today the Palestinian people live under partial self-rule and seem on the way to obtaining the homeland they have yearned for years. 1966 – The Coca-Cola Company announces it will open a plant in Israel in defiance of the the Arab Boycott May 22, 1967 – Egypt declares the Straits of Tiran closed to Israeli shipping June 5, 1967 – Israeli air force pre-emptively attacks Egyptian and Syria; effectively neutralizing them. The Six Day War begins Israel responds to an ominous build-up of Arab forces along its borders by launching simultaneous attacks against Egypt and Syria. Jordan subsequently entered the fray, but the Arab coalition was no match for Israel’s proficient armed forces. In six days of fighting, Israel occupied the Gaza Strip and the Sinai Peninsula of Egypt, the Golan Heights of Syria, and the West Bank and Arab sector of East Jerusalem, both previously under Jordanian rule. By the time the United Nations cease-fire took effect on June 11, Israel had more than doubled its size. The true fruits of victory came in claiming the Old City of Jerusalem from Jordan. Many wept while bent in prayer at the Western Wall of the Second Temple. The U.N. Security Council called for a withdrawal from all the occupied regions, but Israel declined, permanently annexing East Jerusalem and setting up military administrations in the occupied territories. Israel let it be known that Gaza, the West Bank, the Golan Heights, and the Sinai would be returned in exchange for Arab recognition of the right of Israel to exist and guarantees against future attack. Arab leaders, stinging from their defeat, met in August to discuss the future of the Middle East. They decided upon a policy of no peace, no negotiations, and no recognition of Israel, and made plans to defend zealously the rights of Palestinian Arabs in the occupied territories. June 7, 1967 – Israel captures and unifies Jerusalem Defense Minister Moshe Dayan (c), Chief of Staff Yitzhak Rabin (r) and Jerusalem Commander Uzi Narkis walk through the Lion’s Gate into the Old City, June 7, 1967. 1970 – Black September Clashes between Jordanian forces and the PLO, in an attempt by the PLO to take control of the country, end in Jordanian victory; the PLO regroups in Lebanon. 1971 – The three millionth citizen arrives in Israel September 5, 1972 – Eleven Israeli athletes are murdered at the Munich Olympic Games Black September, a terrorist group affiliated with Fatah murders eleven Israeli athletes. West Germany releases Munich killers after German airliner is hijacked. (The same group also hijacks a plane en route to Tel Aviv and holds the passengers and crew hostage for 23 hours. The hostages are rescued by IDF counter terrorism commandos.) October 6, 1973 –  The Yom Kippur War begins Hoping to win back territory lost to Israel during the third Arab-Israeli war, in 1967, Egyptian and Syrian forces launched a coordinated attack against Israel on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Taking the Israeli Defense Forces by surprise, Egyptian troops swept deep into the Sinai Peninsula, while Syria struggled to throw occupying Israeli troops out of the Golan Heights. Israel counterattacked and recaptured the Golan Heights. IDF advances to within 28 miles from Damascus. A cease-fire went into effect on October 25, 1973. When the fourth Arab-Israeli war began many of Israel’s soldiers were away from their posts observing Yom Kippur (or Day of Atonement), and the Arab armies made impressive advances with their up-to-date Soviet weaponry. Iraqi forces soon joined the war, and Syria received support from Jordan. After several days, Israel was fully mobilized, and the Israel Defense Forces began beating back the Arab gains at a heavy cost to soldiers and equipment. A U.S. airlift of arms aided Israel’s cause, but President Richard Nixon (1913-94) delayed the emergency military aid for a week as a tacit signal of U.S. sympathy for Egypt. On October 25, an Egyptian-Israeli cease-fire was secured by the United Nations. April 1974 – Moshe Dayan and Foreign Minister Abba Eban resign, after the criticism of the government’s handling of the Yom Kippur War October 1974 – The General Assembly votes 105 against 4 to invite the PLO to participate in the debate on the “Palestine question” November 1974 – Arafat before the General Assembly calls for the liquidation of Israel and the establishment of a “secular democratic Palestine” November 1974 – UN General Assembly passes a resolution declaring Zionism to be a form of racism June 27 1974 –  Air France airliner en route from Tel Aviv to Paris is hijacked after a stop over in Athens. It is flown to Entebbe The hijackers freed the French crew and non Jewish passengers, while retaining 105 Jewish and Israeli hostages. A 48 hour deadline was set before executions would begin. Faced with little choice, the Israeli government announced that it would enter into negotiations. This bought the precious time needed to consolidate a seemingly impossible military option. Shomron’s plan was based on several advantages that the Israelis had over the terrorists. The Entebbe airport at which the hostages were being held was built by an Israeli construction firm, which was able to provide Shomron with blueprints. Moreover, the released, non-Jewish hostages were able to describe the terrorists, their arms, and their positioning. As a result, the IDF decided to send in an overwhelmingly powerful force: over 200 of the best soldiers the army had to offer participated in the raid, all of them heavily armed. The soldiers freed the hostages in a lightning attack, killing all eight terrorists in the process. Tragically, force commander Yoni Netanyahu was killed as he led the hostages toward the safety of the aircraft; additionally, two hostages were killed in the crossfire inside the airport. The other squads accomplished their missions in virtually the same time as during the “dry run.” By 23:59 the planes were on their way home. The operation, which was predicted to last one hour, in fact took only 58 minutes. September 1978 – The Camp David conference ends in the signing, at the White House Two agreements are signed. The first dealing with an Israel-Egypt peace treaty and the restoration of Sinai to the latter; the second, a framework agreement establishing a format for negotiations on a five-year autonomy regime in the West Bank and Gaza region. Israel-Egypt peace talks to begin shortly with the aim of signing the treaty no later than 17 December. 1980 – The lira is replaced by the shekel 1980 – Basic Law: “Jerusalem, Capital of Israel” is passed By law Jerusalem is proclaimed as the complete and united capital of Israel. 1981 – Israel Air Force destroys Iraqi nuclear reactor at Osirak The attack, code named “Operation Opera,” surprised the Iraqis and the rest of the world, though for Israel it had long been in planning. It was only after the failures on the diplomatic front, and the consultation of military and intelligence experts with Prime Minister Menachem Begin’s cabinet, that Israel chose to go ahead with the attack on the Iraqi reactor. The Israelis had to remove some of the F-16s’ fuel tanks to make room for the heavy munitions necessary for the attack. They also needed to assign F-15s to guard the bombers in case there was need to engage the Iraqis. The mission was aborted once and the date of the attack was rescheduled for the next month. On June 7, 1981, the mission was given a green light. IDF Chief of Staff, Lt. Gen. Rafael Eitan, briefed the pilots personally. Displaying unusual emotion, he told them: “The alternative is our destruction.” With that speech in mind, fourteen F-15s and F-16s flew off the runway of Etzion Air Force base in the Negev, and proceeded to pass over Jordanian, Saudi, and Iraqi airspace, to attack the French-built Iraqi nuclear reactor. The flight to Iraq was done low-level so as to minimize the possibility of being spotted by aircraft radar in any of the Arab nations the planes flew over. King Hussein of Jordan was vacationing in Aqaba during the attack. Seeing the planes pass over his head, he immediately notified the Iraqis to warn them that they may be the targets of an Israeli attack. It appears that Iraq never got the message as communication errors prevented the message from reaching Iraq. Without King Hussein’s warning, Iraqi defenses were caught completely by surprise and opened fire too late. In one minute and twenty seconds, the reactor lay in ruins. The attack was universally criticized. The United States voted for a Security Council resolution condemning Israel and, as a punishment, delayed a shipment of aircraft to Israel that had already been authorized. 1990 – 200,000 Soviet immigrants arrive in Israel 1991 – Israel attacked by Iraqi Scud missiles during the Gulf War 1995 – Oslo Interim Agreement signed. Palestinian Authority to be established The Oslo interim agreement was the second stage in the process begun with the Declaration of Principles, that was supposed to serve as the foundation of a peace process between Palestinians and Israelis. The purpose of the interim agreement was to create a situation that would make it possible for the Palestinians to negotiate as an independent party, without determining in itself the final status. The agreement called for redeployment of the Israeli Army from a sufficient part of the West Bank and Gaza Strip to allow free elections to take place. That is, the army withdrew from most population centers, including about 97% of the population, but only about 7% of the area. The elections allowed the Palestinians to set up the Palestine National Authority as a negotiating partner representing the Palestinians, and as an administrative authority over the Palestinians. 2000 – Palestinians initiated riots after Israeli opposition leader Ariel Sharon visited the Temple Mount Sharon insisted on visiting the Temple Mount in September of 2000. His visit triggered or served as the excuse for a wave of violence that put an end, in practical terms, to the Oslo peace process. Both parties caused high numbers of casualties among civilians as well as combatants: the Palestinians by numerous suicide bombings and gunfire; the Israelis by tank and gunfire and air attacks, by numerous targeted killings, and by reactions to demonstrations. The death toll, including both military and civilian, is estimated to be about 3,000 Palestinians and 1,000 Israelis, as well as 64 foreigners. 2006 – Second Lebanon War Hezbollah terrorists cross the blue line border with Lebanon, attack an Israeli patrol, killing 3 and capturing 2 soldiers. Additional soldier dies the following day and several are killed when a tank hits a mine, pursuing the captors. At the same time, Hezbollah began a series of rocket attacks on northern Israel. In subsequent days, Israel carried out massive but selective bombing and artillery shelling of Lebanon, hitting rocket stores, Hezbollah headquarters in Dahya quarter of Beirut killing over two hundred persons, many civilians. Hezbollah responds with several hundred rocket attacks on Haifa, Tiberias, Safed and other towns deep in northern Israel, killing 13 civilians. 2008 –  Operation Cast Lead Israeli operation in Gaza to stop Hamas rocket attacks. Over 1,000 Palestinian casualties. 2012 – Operation Pillar of Defense IDF forces conducted an eight-day military operation in the Hamas governed Gaza Strip during which dozens of targets there were attacked in response to ongoing rocket fire on the western Negev. 2014 – Operation Protective Edge An IDF military reaction following the escalation of major rocket attacks fired by Hamas from the Gaza strip targeting major Israeli cities including: Tel Aviv, Jerusalem, Beer Sheva, Sderot, Ashkelon, Dimona, Zichron Yaakov and more. 2015 – Summer 2015 Iran nuclear deal is signed, Israel and large segment of American Jewish community oppose it That completes our brief review of Israel’s ancient and modern history. This was only a brief glimpse, many events, violent attacks, and deaths were covered for lack of time not importance. Next time we begin our Biblical review of prophecies fulfilled and yet to occur for the land of Israel and its people. Final Alignment Of The Nations Pt 3 Israel CSN 0128
Today we continue our series, Final Alignment Of The Nations, with today’s episode being part three. If you are a Bible believing Christian then you, like me, are awaiting the return of Yeshua HaMeshiach, Jesus the Messiah. When that time approaches, Gog of Magog will invade Israel along with his confederation, also known as the Battle of Armageddon. Just prior to this invasion there will need to be a final alignment of the nations as foretold by Daniel, John, and other Biblical prophets. In other words all the involved nations must exist and be politically aligned as dictated by prophecy and God’s sovereign plan. I’m confident we are not at that point yet and Yeshua’s return is not imminent. These days are called HaAcharit HaYamim, The Last Days. Isaiah 2:2 Now it will come about that In the last days The mountain of the house of the LORD Will be established as the chief of the mountains, And will be raised above the hills; And all the nations will stream to it. In the last episode we reviewed Israel’s Biblical and ancient history. Today we continue with Israel’s modern history and then we will review Israel’s current position in light of prophecy and past. We began with the call of Abraham and ended with the birth of Theodore Herzl, lets pick it up from there. Much of the following information comes from the Jewish Virtual Library. Israel’s Modern History 1860 – Father of Zionism, Theodore Herzl born Theodore Herzl 1860-1904 Herzl was impacted by antisemitism he personally experience and also the Dreyfus affair and its blatant antisemitic atmosphere. Despite ridicule from Jewish leaders, Herzl published Der Judenstaat (The Jewish State, 1896). Herzl argued that the Jewish problem was not individual but national. He believed Jews could gain acceptance in the world only if they ceased being a national anomaly. The Jews are one people, he said, and their plight could be transformed into a positive force by the establishment of a Jewish state. Unfortunately this did not occur until after the Holocaust. 1874 – Chaim Weizmann born in Motol, Russia. Chaim Weizmann 1874-1952 Weizmann’s scientific assistance to the Allied forces in World War I brought him into close contact with British leaders, enabling him to play a key role in the issuing of the Balfour Declaration on November 2, 1917 in which Britain committed itself to the establishment of a Jewish home in Palestine. After the end of World War II, Weizmann was instrumental in the adoption of the Partition Plan by the United Nations on November 29, 1947, and in the recognition of Israel by the United States. Weizmann served as the first President of Israel. 1886 – David Ben-Gurion born in Plonsk, Poland. David Ben-Gurion proclaiming Israel’s independence May 14, 1948 in Tel Aviv Having led the struggle to establish the State of Israel in May 1948, Ben-Gurion became Prime Minister and Defense Minister. In late 1953 Ben-Gurion left the government and retired to Kibbutz Sde Boker in the Negev. He returned in 1955, assuming the post of Defense Minister and later the premiership leading the country during the 1956 Sinai campaign, in which Israeli forces temporarily secured the Sinai peninsula. April 20, 1889 – Adolf Hitler is born in Braunau am Inn, Austria, . 1884 – French general staff officer Alfred Dreyfus is sentenced to life on Devil’s Island in the Dreyfus Affair August 29 1897 – First Jewish Zionist Congress convened by Theodore Herzl in Basel, Switzerland, Zionist Organization Founded The first Zionist Congress in Basel, Switzerland in the concert hall of the Basel Municipal Casino on August 29, 1897. Herzl had planned to hold the gathering in Munich, but due to local Jewish opposition he transferred the gathering to Basel, Switzerland. The Congress declared of Zionism’s goals as: Zionism seeks to establish a home for the Jewish people in Eretz Israel secured under public law. The Congress contemplates the following means to the attainment of this end: 1. The promotion by appropriate means of the settlement in Eretz-Israel of Jewish farmers, artisans, and manufacturers. 2. The organization and uniting of the whole of Jewry by means of appropriate institutions, both local and international, in accordance with the laws of each country. 3. The strengthening and fostering of Jewish national sentiment and national consciousness. 4. Preparatory steps toward obtaining the consent of governments, where necessary, in order to reach the goals of Zionism. 1903 – British Government proposes “Uganda Scheme,” rejected by the Sixth Zionist Congress. At the Sixth Zionist Congress at Basel on August 26, 1903, Herzl proposed the British Uganda Program as a temporary refuge for Jews in Russia in immediate danger. Three days later the British government released an official document allocating a “Jewish territory” in East Africa “on conditions which will enable members to observe their national customs.” The Uganda Program was finally rejected by the Zionist movement at the Seventh Zionist Congress in 1905 Declaration of the British Government allocating a “Jewish Territory” in East Africa (August 29, 1903) 1903-1907 – 500,000 Jews flee Russia, 90% go to the United States. 1909 –  First kibbutz, Degania, founded. View of Degania Alef, 1931 1909 – Founding of Tel Aviv as Hebrew speaking Jewish city. Tel Aviv 2016 1914-1917 – World War I 1914 – The Ottoman empire enters the war on the side of Germany. 1916 – Louis D. Brandeis is nominated to the Supreme Court by Woodrow Wilson. At the time of his nomination, the Senate had never before held a public hearing on a President’s Supreme Court Nominee; they had all been confirmed on the day of their nomination. However, it took four months of Senate Judiciary Committee hearings until the Senate brought the nomination of Brandeis to a vote. Brandeis was confirmed as the first Jewish Supreme Court Justice in a Senate vote of 47 – 22 on June 1, 1916. 1917 – Four-hundred years of Ottoman rule ended by British conquest 1917 – The Balfour Declaration favors Jewish Palestinian State. The British government decided to endorse the establishment of a Jewish home in Palestine. After discussions within the cabinet and consultations with Jewish leaders, the decision was made public in a letter from British Foreign Secretary Lord Arthur James Balfour to Lord Rothschild. The contents of this letter became known as the Balfour Declaration. Balfour Declaration November 2, 1917 This is the 100 year anniversary of the Balfour Declaration. The Palestinians has labeled it a crime and demanded the UK apologize, which they refuse to do. We won’t apologize for Balfour Declaration, UK tells Palestinians Manuel Hassassian, the Palestinian Authority ambassador to the UK, has stated that unless Britain apologized, canceled planned celebrations and recognized a Palestinian state, the Palestinians would go ahead with plans for a lawsuit against the British government for issuing the Balfour Declaration. 1917 – Russian Revolution breaks out. Heavy fighting in the South and West, where over 3 million Jews live. Over 2000 pogroms took place, claiming the lives of up to 200,000 Jews in the next three years. 1917 – Ottoman forces surrender in Jerusalem to Allied Forces under General Sir Edmund Allenby. 1920 –  Mandate for the Land of Israel given over to Britain on the condition that the Balfour Declaration be implemented, San Remo Conference. In July 1922, the League of Nations entrusted Great Britain with the Mandate for Palestine. Recognizing “the historical connection of the Jewish people with Palestine,” Great Britain was called upon to facilitate the establishment of a Jewish national home in Palestine-Eretz Israel (Land of Israel). Shortly afterwards, in September 1922, the League of Nations and Great Britain decided that the provisions for setting up a Jewish national home would not apply to the area east of the Jordan River, which constituted three-fourths of the territory included in the Mandate and which eventually became the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. The Mandatory government did not succeed in maintaining the letter and spirit of the Mandate. Under Arab pressure, it withdrew from its commitment, especially with respect to immigration and land acquisition. The White Papers of 1930 and 1939 restricted immigration and acquisition of land by Jews. 1921 – U.S. immigration laws “reformed” to effectively exclude Eastern European Jews and other immigrants. Further restrictions imposed in 1924. 1922 – Transjordan set up on three-fourths of the British mandate area, forbidding Jewish immigration, leaving one-fourth for the Jewish national home. 1922 – The United States Congress and President Harding approve the Balfour Declaration. 1922 – First British census of Palestine shows total population 757,182 (11% Jewish). 1929 – 2,000 Arabs attack Jews praying at the Kotel on the 9th of Av. Arabs view British refusal to condemn the attacks as support. 1931 – Etzel (the Irgun), Jewish underground organization, founded. Armed Jewish underground organization founded of Haganah commanders, who left the Haganah in protest against its defense charter. In April 1937, during the Arab riots, the organization split—about half its members returned to the Haganah. The rest formed a new Irgun Zeva’i Le’umi (abbr. Etzel), which was ideologically linked with the Revisionist Movement and accepted the authority of its leader, Vladimir Jabotinsky. Etzel rejected the “restraint” policy of the Haganah and carried out armed reprisals against Arabs, which were condemned by the Jewish Agency. Many of its members were arrested by the British authorities; one of them, Shlomo Ben Yosef, was hanged for shooting an Arab bus. After the publication of the White Paper in May 1939, Etzel directed its activities against the British Mandatory authorities. From 1943 Etzel was headed by Menachem Begin. In February 1944, Etzel declared war against the British administration. It attacked and blew up government offices, military installations and police stations. Most notable was bombing of The King David Hotel in Jerusalem on Monday, July 22, 1946. Their target was the British administrative headquarters for Palestine, which was housed in the southern wing, 91 people of various nationalities were killed and 46 injured. In April 1947, four members of the organization were hanged in Acre prison. In May 1947, Etzel broke into the fortress at Acre and freed 41 prisoners. In July 1947, when 3 other Etzel members were executed, the I.Z.L. hanged two British sergeants. After the Declaration of Independence, the Etzel high command offered to disband the organization and integrate its members into the army of the new Jewish state. Full integration was achieved in September 1948. The 1960 movie Exodus, staring Paul Newman and Eva Marie Saint,  is a 1960 epic film on the founding of the modern State of Israel. The film includes much about the Irgun and covers the Bombing of the King David. However, as far as the Exodus is concerned it was not allowed to port in Israel, in reality the British army boarded, killed three people, loaded the passengers on to prison ships and took them back to Hamburg. 1930 – Second British census of Palestine shows total population of 1,035,154 (16.9% Jewish). 1934 – American Jews cheer Detroit Tigers’ Hank Greenberg when he refuses to play ball on Yom Kippur. In 1938, with five games left to the season, Greenberg’s 58 home runs are two shy of Babe Ruth’s record. When several pitchers walk him rather than giving him a shot at the record, many believe major league baseball did not want a Jew to claim that place in America’s national sport. 1939-1945 – German Holocaust against the Jews 1940 – Nazis establish ghettos in Poland Ghettos were enclosed districts of a city in which the Germans forced the Jewish population to live under miserable conditions. Ghettos isolated Jews by separating Jewish communities both from the population as a whole and from neighboring Jewish communities. The Warsaw ghetto, established on October 12, 1940, was the largest ghetto, in both area and population. There, more than 350,000 Jews–about 30 percent of the city’s population–were eventually confined in about 2.4 percent of the city’s total area. June 14, 1940 – The first train of prisoners arrives at Auschwitz-Birkenau. Only 20 people of these initial 700+ were Jewish 1942 – Nazi leaders refine the “Final Solution” — genocide of the Jewish people — at Wannsee Conference July 22, 1946 – The west wing of the King David Hotel in Jerusalem is bombed King David Hotel 1946 The King David which housed British Military Headquarters and other governmental offices was destroyed by explosives planted by members of the Irgun. The casualties were 76 persons killed, 46 injured and 29 still missing in the rubble. The dead included many British, Arabs and Jews. April 23, 1947 – The British First Lord of the Admiralty, Viscount Hall He blamed contributions from American Jews to the Jewish Palestinians as aiding the underground groups there and cited the toll since August 1, 1945: 113 killed, 249 wounded, 168 Jews convicted, 28 sentenced to death, four executed, 33 slain in battles. Viscount Samuel urged increased immigration. May 4, 1947 – The walls of Acre prison were blasted open by an Irgun bomb squad 251 Jewish and Arab prisoners escaped after a gun battle in which 15 Jews and 1 Arab were killed, 32 (including six British guards) were injured and 23 escapists were recaptured. The Palestine Government promised no extra punishment if the 189 escapees still at large will surrender. June 4, 1947 – The Stern Gang sent letter bombs to high British governmental officials Eight letter bombs containing powdered explosives were discovered in London. Recipients included Ernest Bevin, Anthony Eden, Prime Minister Attlee and Winston Churchill. July 18, 1947 – Steamer Exodus repelled by forces from shores of Palestine The Exodus 1947 ship carrying 4,500 Jewish refugees sails for British-administered Palestine from southern France, despite British restrictions on Jewish immigration. The British intercept the ship and force it to proceed to Haifa in Palestine and then the French port of Port-de-Bouc, where it lay anchor for more than a month. Ultimately, the British take the refugees from the Exodus 1947 to Hamburg, Germany, and forcibly return them to DP camps. The fate of the Exodus 1947 dramatized the plight of Holocaust survivors in the DP camps and increased international pressure on Great Britain to allow free Jewish immigration to Palestine. The American captain, Bernard Marks, and his crew were arrested. Washington D.C. Secretary of State George C. Marshall disclosed that the US had urged Britain to reconsider sending the “Exodus” group to Germany, but Britain replied that there were no facilities for housing them elsewhere because the French did not want them and there were a number of vacant detention camps in Germany. November 29, 1947 – UN Partition Plan Resolution 181 As the postwar Jewish refugee crisis escalates and relations between Jews and Arabs deteriorate, the British government decides to submit the status of Palestine to the United Nations. In a special session on this date, the United Nations General Assembly voted to partition Palestine into two new states, one Jewish and the other Arab. The decision was accepted by the Jewish leadership but rejected by the Arab leadership. UN approves partition plan by a vote of 33-13 with 10 abstentions to create a Jewish and Arab state. UN Resolution 181 Partition Map Dec. 13, 1947 -Bombings by the Irgun killed at least 16 Arabs and injured 67 more In Jaffa the Irgun burned down a hundred Arab houses. In Syria, an anti-Jewish attack in retaliation for the Irgun actions burned down a 2,750-year old synagogue in Aleppo and destroyed the priceless Ben-Asher Codex, a 10th century Hebrew Bible of original Old Testament manuscripts. January 25, 1948 – Following the deaths of ten Jews and two Arabs in a battle outside Jerusalem British authorities stated that 721 Arabs, 408 Jews, 19 civilians and 12 British policemen (a total of 1,160) had been killed in an eight-week period and that 1,171 Arabs, 749 Jews, 13 civilians and 37 British officers had been wounded. May 14 1948 – Declaration of Independence by the State of Israel David Ben-Gurion announces the establishment of the State of Israel in Tel Aviv and declares that Jewish immigration into the new state would be unrestricted. Between 1948 and 1951, almost 700,000 Jews immigrate to Israel. President Harry S. Truman recognizes the State of Israel within its first hour of existence. Arab armies invade Israel. We will stop here and complete the history of Israel next time, after which we will examine prophecies fulfilled. Till next time God bless. Final Alignment Of The Nations Pt 2 Israel CSN 0127
Last week I began a new series, related to watching for our Lord’s return. If you are a regular listener to this podcast then, like me, you are awaiting the return of Yeshua HaMeshiach, Jesus the Messiah. When that time approaches, Gog of Magog will invade Israel along with his confederation. This battle is also referred to as the Battle of Armageddon. Just prior to this invasion there will need to be a final alignment of the nations. In other words all the involved nations must exist and be politically aligned as dictated by prophecy and God’s sovereign plan. I’m confident we are not at that point yet and Yeshua’s return is not imminent, expectant yes, but not imminent. Its time we review current events in light of HaAcharit HaYamim, The Last Days, as foretold by scripture. Isaiah 2:2 Now it will come about that In the last days The mountain of the house of the LORD Will be established as the chief of the mountains, And will be raised above the hills; And all the nations will stream to it. Today we begin our investigation of the nations with Israel. Spanning a few episodes first we will review its ancient history and important events, then its modern history, and then Israel’s position in light of Biblical prophecy in the Acharit HaYamim. One might say that the emergence of Israel begins with the call of Abraham, at least that is where we will begin. We will be creating an historical timeline which will be summarized at the end of this series. First, to gain perspective note these two global transforming events: Genesis 6:17 “Behold, I, even I am bringing the flood of water upon the earth, to destroy all flesh in which is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything that is on the earth shall perish. The Global Flood occurred in 1656 AM (anno mundi – “in the year of the world”) or 2275 BC. The population of the world today descended from Noah, his three sons, and their wives. Genesis 11:6 The LORD said, “Behold, they are one people, and they all have the same language. And this is what they began to do, and now nothing which they purpose to do will be impossible for them. 7 “Come, let Us go down and there confuse their language, so that they will not understand one another’s speech.” 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from there over the face of the whole earth; and they stopped building the city. The Tower of Babel occurred in 2130 BC plus or minus 20 some years or about 145 years after the Global Flood. This is of course when the world was divided into 70 languages (Genesis 10), but more importantly divided the peoples into nation states. The European Union is an attempt to reverse this division. As I stated earlier The call of Abraham occurred around 1848 BC, and could be considered the beginning of Israel. Without Abraham heeding God’s call Israel would not exist. Genesis 12:1 Now the LORD said to Abram, “Go forth from your country, And from your relatives And from your father’s house, To the land which I will show you; 2 And I will make you a great nation, And I will bless you, And make your name great; And so you shall be a blessing; 3 And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed.” Shortly afterwards God enters into a covenant with Abraham describing the land titled to his decedents. Abraham himself never realized this promise in this present age. Genesis 15:18 On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “To your descendants I have given this land, From the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates: God’s Land Grant to Abraham From this map you can see the vast land mass that Israel will possess in the not too distant future. We can’t say for sure how much of Saudi Arabia Israel will possess but if this map is reasonably accurate Israel will increase its land mass by more than 95%. This covenant passes through Isaac and not Ishmael. Genesis 17:19 But God said, “No, but Sarah your wife will bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant for his descendants after him. The covenant continues through Jacob whose name was changed to Israel: Genesis 27:26 Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come close and kiss me, my son.” 27 So he came close and kissed him; and when he smelled the smell of his garments, he blessed him and said, “See, the smell of my son Is like the smell of a field which the LORD has blessed; 28 Now may God give you of the dew of heaven, And of the fatness of the earth, And an abundance of grain and new wine; 29 May peoples serve you, And nations bow down to you; Be master of your brothers, And may your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be those who curse you, And blessed be those who bless you.” Genesis 32:28 He said, “Your name shall no longer be Jacob, but Israel; for you have striven with God and with men and have prevailed.” Jacob and all his family move to Egypt around 1633 BC, 215 years after the call of Abraham. Genesis 46:2 God spoke to Israel in visions of the night and said, “Jacob, Jacob.” And he said, “Here I am.” 3 He said, “I am God, the God of your father; do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you a great nation there. 4 “I will go down with you to Egypt, and I will also surely bring you up again; and Joseph will close your eyes.” 5 Then Jacob arose from Beersheba; and the sons of Israel carried their father Jacob and their little ones and their wives in the wagons which Pharaoh had sent to carry him. Genesis 46:26 All the persons belonging to Jacob, who came to Egypt, his direct descendants, not including the wives of Jacob’s sons, were sixty-six persons in all, 27 and the sons of Joseph, who were born to him in Egypt were two; all the persons of the house of Jacob, who came to Egypt, were seventy. Exodus from Egypt around 1418 BC, 430 years after the call of Abraham. The Israelites dwelt in Egypt for 215 years. Exodus 12:37 Now the sons of Israel journeyed from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, aside from children. Exodus Route through Mt Jabal Al Lawz, Joe Anderson, https://headwatersresources.org/exodus-route-map/ Israelites cross the Jordan and enter the promised land around 1377 BC: Joshua 3:17 And the priests who carried the ark of the covenant of the LORD stood firm on dry ground in the middle of the Jordan while all Israel crossed on dry ground, until all the nation had finished crossing the Jordan. Tel Jericho David becomes king of Israel in 981 BC: 2 Samuel 2:4 Then the men of Judah came and there anointed David king over the house of Judah. And they told David, saying, “It was the men of Jabesh-gilead who buried Saul.” “House of David” inscription, 830 BCE, found in the excavation of 1993-4 at Tel Dan Israel (the 10 northern tribes) are exiled to Assyria in 640 BC: 2 Kings 17:5 Then the king of Assyria invaded the whole land and went up to Samaria and besieged it three years. 6 In the ninth year of Hoshea, the king of Assyria captured Samaria and carried Israel away into exile to Assyria, and settled them in Halah and Habor, on the river of Gozan, and in the cities of the Medes. King Nebuchadnezzar lays siege to Jerusalem and the 1st group of Jews are deported to Babylon in 525 BC: Daniel 1:1 In the third year of the reign of Jehoiakim king of Judah, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came to Jerusalem and besieged it. 2 The Lord gave Jehoiakim king of Judah into his hand, along with some of the vessels of the house of God; and he brought them to the land of Shinar, to the house of his god, and he brought the vessels into the treasury of his god. Judah falls and the Temple in Jerusalem is burned and destroyed in 506 BC, 1342 years from the call of Abraham and 475 years from the anointing of King David. 2 Kings 25:1 Now in the ninth year of his reign, on the tenth day of the tenth month, Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, camped against it and built a siege wall all around it. 2 So the city was under siege until the eleventh year of King Zedekiah. 3 On the ninth day of the fourth month the famine was so severe in the city that there was no food for the people of the land. 4 Then the city was broken into, and all the men of war fled by night by way of the gate between the two walls beside the king’s garden, though the Chaldeans were all around the city. And they went by way of the Arabah. 5 But the army of the Chaldeans pursued the king and overtook him in the plains of Jericho and all his army was scattered from him. 6 Then they captured the king and brought him to the king of Babylon at Riblah, and he passed sentence on him. 7 They slaughtered the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, then put out the eyes of Zedekiah and bound him with bronze fetters and brought him to Babylon. 8 Now on the seventh day of the fifth month, which was the nineteenth year of King Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, came to Jerusalem. 9 He burned the house of the LORD, the king’s house, and all the houses of Jerusalem; even every great house he burned with fire. The Destruction of the Temple of Jerusalem, Francesco Hayez, 1867 Babylon falls. Cyrus, King of Persia issues a decree to rebuild Jerusalem and the Temple in 454 BC, 70 years of captivity ends. 2 Chronicles 36:22 Now in the first year of Cyrus king of Persia– in order to fulfill the word of the LORD by the mouth of Jeremiah– the LORD stirred up the spirit of Cyrus king of Persia, so that he sent a proclamation throughout his kingdom, and also put it in writing, saying, 23 “Thus says Cyrus king of Persia, ‘The LORD, the God of heaven, has given me all the kingdoms of the earth, and He has appointed me to build Him a house in Jerusalem, which is in Judah. Whoever there is among you of all His people, may the LORD his God be with him, and let him go up!'” Isaiah 44:28 “It is I who says of Cyrus, ‘He is My shepherd! And he will perform all My desire.’ And he declares of Jerusalem, ‘She will be built,’ And of the temple, ‘Your foundation will be laid.'” Jeremiah 29:10 “For thus says the LORD, ‘When seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My good word to you, to bring you back to this place. Temple completed and dedicated in 434 BC: Exodus 6:15 This temple was completed on the third day of the month Adar; it was the sixth year of the reign of King Darius. 16 And the sons of Israel, the priests, the Levites and the rest of the exiles, celebrated the dedication of this house of God with joy. Rebuilding the walls of Jerusalem is completed in 419 BC: Nehemiah 6:15 So the wall was completed on the twenty-fifth of the month Elul, in fifty-two days. 16 When all our enemies heard of it, and all the nations surrounding us saw it, they lost their confidence; for they recognized that this work had been accomplished with the help of our God. Alexander the Great (Greece) conquers Persia in 331 BC. Seleucid king of Syria, Antiochus Epiphanies plunders Jerusalem, murdering many, 175 BC Jewish Maccabean revolt against restrictions on practice of Judaism and desecration of the Temple 166-160 BC. Final Alignment Of The Nations – Pt 1 CSN 0126
Today I want to begin a new series, related to watching for our Lord’s return. If you are a regular listener to this podcast then, like me, you are awaiting the return of Yeshua HaMeshiach, Jesus the Messiah. When that time approaches, Gog of Magog will invade Israel along with his confederation. We studied this in our Ezekiel 38 & 39 Study, a 12 part series. This battle is also referred to as the Battle of Armageddon. Just prior to this invasion there will need to be a final alignment of the nations. In other words all the involved nations must exist and be politically aligned as dictated by prophecy and God’s sovereign plan. I’m confident we are not at that point and Yeshua’s return is not imminent, expectant yes, but not imminent. Its time we review current events in light of HaAcharit HaYamim, The Last Days, as foretold by scripture. At the same time, this series will emphasize the accuracy and inspired nature of scripture, and thus validate all that it contains. We cannot escape the undeniable evidence that The God exists, his Word is true and thus there are in fact promises and judgments to come. This could just as easily be a study about Evidence that Demands Faith. Blind faith is no faith at all but is simply brainwashing. Such “faith” has a fractured foundation and will not stand. There must be evidence to validate or justify ones faith. This study will provide that. As we work through this series we will draw upon many of our past studies including Daniel, Ezekiel 38 & 39, Revelation, and other Prophetic passages. Lets begin early in the 20th century. Here is a map of the Middle East as it was in 1914. Source: A History of the Arab Peoples by Albert Hourani The map above is much different than today, about 100 years later, which is a blink of the eye in the timeline of human history. Of course the State of Israel did not exist, a sovereign Egypt did not exist as it was occupied and controlled by Britain. Neither did Libya, Sudan, and Yemen exist. The Ottoman Empire engulfed present day Syria, Israel, Saudi Arabia, and Iraq. Only the Biblical nation Persia (Iran) existed. Why is this important? The ancient nations of Egypt, Persia (Iran), Babylon (Iraq), Greece (Syria), and Israel  were all foretold to reemerge in the last days, setting the final alignment of the world’s nations prior to Yehovah’s return. The purpose of this study is to one; compare prophecy with current geopolitics  – is everything in place? and two; demonstrate the undeniable divine nature of scripture and therefore discover our certain destiny. We will investigate these nations, their Biblical past, Biblical future, and current state. Before we review individual nations beginning with Israel, we must first review the Biblical prophecies that tell us what regions and nations to anticipate their rebirth. I will refer to this diagram, taken from our study of the book of Daniel. During our next time together we will review the prophetic and miraculous rebirth of Israel. Until then God Bless. The Name Of God Pt 6 CSN 0124
Karlskirche (St. Charles’s Church) in Vienna, Austria This will be the last episode in the Name Of God Series. This has been a long journey but I hope you have not only enjoyed it but have grown spiritually as I have. I will cover some new material before concluding but lets first spend some time reviewing what we have covered thus far. Episode 1 In Episode One I began by questioning what is the Name of God? Probably seemed like a ridiculous question at the time but know you know better. God’s name does not appear on any of the pages in your English Bible. I questioned why has the Name been hidden all these years? Does it even matter whether we know his Name? Judaeo Christianity tells us there is only one God, and he is known by only one name. Psalm 83:18 That they may know that You alone, whose name is the LORD, Are the Most High over all the earth. Jeremiah 33:2 “Thus says the LORD who made the earth, the LORD who formed it to establish it, the LORD is His name, Our English translations claim that name is LORD, but as we discovered this is not his true Name, it is simply a substitute. This Name occurs 6,828 times in the scriptures. These are just a few of those occurrences: Psalm 30:4 Sing praise to the LORD, you His godly ones, And give thanks to His holy name. Psalm 113:1 Praise the LORD! Praise, O servants of the LORD, Praise the name of the LORD. 2 Blessed be the name of the LORD From this time forth and forever. 3 From the rising of the sun to its setting The name of the LORD is to be praised. Psalm 148:13 Let them praise the name of the LORD, For His name alone is exalted; His glory is above earth and heaven. Genesis 13:4 to the place of the altar which he had made there formerly; and there Abram called on the name of the LORD. Psalm 116:13 I shall lift up the cup of salvation And call upon the name of the LORD. Joel 2:32 “And it will come about that whoever calls on the name of the LORD Will be delivered; For on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem There will be those who escape, As the LORD has said, Even among the survivors whom the LORD calls. How are we to praise or call on the Name of our God if we don’t know what it is? Despite all the mystery there is no debating how to write the name of God, at least the consonants. The Name was, of course, reveled in Hebrew, the ancient language in which the Torah was written by Moshe (Moses). We know exactly how to write the Name in Hebrew: יהוה There were no vowels written in the original Hebrew Bible. In modern Hebrew the same holds true, vowels are not written or indicated except in early grammar books. When vowels are written In Hebrew, they are not written as letters but in sort of a shorthand of dots and lines called “points” or in Hebrew nikud. These nikud, or vowel points, identify the vowel to be pronounced. Episode 2 In Episode Two I mentioned that only God’s Name has been substituted, all other names are fully know such as Noah, or Noach, Abraham, Avraham, Isaac, Yitzchak, Jacob, Ya’akov, Moses, Moshe, and so on, but when it comes to the name of God we have LORD. We do know the consonants of the Name, they are in our Hebrew manuscripts, but we don’t have the correct vowels. Technically we can write the name in Hebrew, the consonants, but that alone does not tell us how to pronounce it. When Moses penned the words of the Torah, the first five books of the Old Testament, he did so writing consonants only. The Hebrew manuscripts our Bible is based upon does have vowels, actually vowel points. These vowel points allow us to pronounce the words. These vowels were introduced by the Masoretes. The Masoretes are the ones  who developed the nikudim, or vowel points that are used today and are found in many important Hebrew manuscripts. The Masoretes were most active during the sixth through tenth centuries A.D. After the destruction of the temple and subsequent dispersion of the Jews, the Holy language fell into disuse. The dispersed Jews relied on their local languages and dialects to conduct business. There was a concern that over time, without written vowels, the correct pronunciations would be forgotten and lost forever. The Masoretes wanted to preserve the Holy Scriptures as spoken since the days of Moses. Codification of the pronunciation was an enormous undertaking, but fortunately because of their work the ancient scriptures can be pronounced and read today. The Masoretic scribes were meticulous when copying the Holy Scriptures. The task of copying a scroll was enormous and time consuming. The meticulous process of hand-copying a scroll takes about 2,000 hours (a full-time job for one year). To illustrate just how accurate the scribes were – they counted and knew, for example, that there were exactly 78,064 letters within Genesis, or Bereishit. The Masoretic scribes added the vowel pointings and cantillation marks to the consonantal text to indicate how particular words were pronounced. They deliberately developed the vowel points, nikudim, so that they could be inserted without disturbing the original consonantal forms. They did this by adding the markings below and above the consonants. This is the degree of respect they had for the Word of God. For centuries Jews have not spoken the Name of God not only because it is holy but they built a “fence” around the prohibition of not taking God’s Name in vain. Exodus 20:7 “You shall not take the name of the LORD your God in vain, for the LORD will not leave him unpunished who takes His name in vain. The forbiddance of speaking the Name is a man-made ordinance, not directed by God, in fact God desires us to speak the Name. Ruth 2:4 Now behold, Boaz came from Bethlehem and said to the reapers, “May the LORD be with you.” And they said to him, “May the LORD bless you.” Psalm 113:3 From the rising of the sun to its setting The name of the LORD is to be praised. The scriptures agree that not only has the Name been spoken in the past but it will be so in the future as well. Zephaniah 3:9 “For then I will give to the peoples purified lips, That all of them may call on the name of the LORD, To serve Him shoulder to shoulder. Zechariah 13:9 “And I will bring the third part through the fire, Refine them as silver is refined, And test them as gold is tested. They will call on My name, And I will answer them; I will say, ‘They are My people,’ And they will say, ‘The LORD is my God.'” Unfortunately it was Rabbinical Judaism that forbade the speaking of the Name. This is the Judaism Yeshua so often rebuked as being the traditions of man and not the commandments of God. Rabbinical Judaism teaches that the name is forbidden to all except the High Priest, who should only speak it in the Holy of Holies of the Temple in Jerusalem on Yom Kippur. The High Priest would pronounce the name “just as it is written”. As each blessing was made, the people in the courtyard were to prostrate themselves completely as they heard it spoken aloud. When the Temple was destroyed in A.D. 70 the Name ceased to be spoken. Most modern Jews never pronounce YHWH but instead read Adonai (“My Lord”) during prayer and while reading the Torah and as HaShem (“The Name”) at other times. When the Masoretes codified the Hebrew Old Testament with nikudim, they purposely removed and/or changed the vowels for the Name of God so that it could be recognized but not pronounced. It was known by all Jews that the Holy Name was not permitted to be spoken and by removing the vowels even an accidental mentioning of the Name could not occur. Fast forward hundreds of years. Without the vowels written in the text there is great disagreement over what they should be. Episode 3 In Episode Three I introduced the most important Hebrew manuscripts; the Leningrad Codex, the Aleppo Codex, and the Crown of Damascus. All three of these are of the Masoretic tradition. In addition we have the recent discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, a thousand years earlier than the Leningrad. The Leningrad Codex is the oldest complete manuscript of the Hebrew Bible. It was written in Cairo around the year 1010. The Leningrad and Aleppo Codex are of the famous Ben Asher family of scribes who lived in Tiberias. The two manuscripts are regarded as the primary codices of the Masoretic tradition. The Leningrad Codex, although complete, is not considered the best quality Hebrew manuscript. The Aleppo Codex ranks first among the Hebrew manuscripts and derives its name from the city in Syria where it had been located. The incomplete Aleppo Codex was written about 930 A.D. The Crown of Damascus is a 10th century Hebrew Bible codex of the Pentateuch containing the first Five Books of Moses. The codex was copied by an unknown scribe, replete with Masoretic annotations. The manuscript is lacking in its beginning, as it starts with Genesis 9:26, Exodus 18:1–23 is also missing. In all about 800 scrolls, including thousands of fragments have been uncovered as part of the Dead Sea Scrolls. Altogether there are about 200 texts of the Old Testament, but many of these are no more than fragments. One of the prominent Old Testament finds included The Great Isaiah Scroll. It is a complete copy except for a few small breaks in the text. For all practical purposes the text reads the same as the Masoretic. The majority of variances are spelling, grammar, and modifications of vocabulary. Prior to the Dead Sea scrolls the oldest Hebrew Old Testament manuscript was from ~900 A.D. The Dead Sea scrolls provided Hebrew manuscripts 1000 years older than previously existed. I compared The Leningrad, Aleppo, and Great Isaiah Scroll to our English Old Testament using Isaiah 12:4. The Leningrad and Aleppo were pointed the same, and of course the Great Isaiah Scroll had no vowel points at all, originally being written before the Masoretes. Episode 4 In Episode Four we examined other names of other Biblical characters because many individuals in the Old Testament were named after God, often times a characteristic of God. These are called theophoric names. Theophoric is a Greek term meaning “bearing god” and is a term used to describe a name that has embedded within it the name of a god, or in our case the Name of the God. We examined two types of names, those with God’s name at the beginning and those with His name at the end. Here are just a few that we covered: Theophoric Beginning Names Joshua Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: יְהוֹשֻעַ The correct pronunciation is Yehoshua. This is a compound word, YHVH and yasha, which means saves. The meaning then is YHVH saves. The pronunciation is indisputable, Yehoshua,  with Yeho being a shortened version of God’s name. You may have already guessed but Yeshua is simply a shortened version of Yehoshua. Jehoshaphat Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: יְהוֹשָפָט The correct pronunciation is Yehoshaphat. Another compound word, YHVH and shaphat, meaning YHVH judges. Jonathan Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: יְהוֹנָתָן The correct pronunciation is Yehonatan. Another compound word, YHVH and natan, meaning YHVH gives. Theophoric Ending Names Now lets turn to Biblical Hebrew names that end with God’s name. In this case including the last consonant of YHVH. Zechariah Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: זְכַרְיָה The correct pronunciation is Zecharyah. Another compound word, zachar and ya, with ya being a shortened version of YHVH. The name means ya remembers or YHVH remembers. Jeremiah Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: יִרְמְיָהוּ The correct pronunciation is Yirmeyahu. Another compound word, rum and ya. The name means YHVH has appointed. Nehemiah Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: נְחֶמְיָה The correct pronunciation is Nechemya. Another compound word, nacham and ya. The name means YHVH comforts. These are just of few of theophoric in the Hebrew Bible. The forms we reviewed with God’s name at the beginning included the first three consonants, יהו, and those with God’s name at the end, the last consonant, ה. If we were to “plug” these vowels into His Name we would get: יְהֹוָה This would be pronounced as Yehovah, but this is not enough to make such a conclusion. We will need to gather more evidence to draw such a conclusion. Episode 5 In Episode Five we looked at historical examples of YHVH pointed as Yehovah or in Hebrew: יְהֹוָה     Yehovah Leningrad Codex The Leningrad Codex is the oldest complete manuscript of the Hebrew Bible. There are 52 occurrences of יְהֺוָה (with these vowels) in the Leningrad Codex. Remember there are 6,828 occurrences of יהוה in the Leningrad Codex, yet 52 of these include the missing cholem vowel. Why is this? It’s anyone’s guess, perhaps out of the 6,828 occurrences 52 slipped by the Masoretes without removing one of the vowels. The first occurrence of YHVH with all vowels is Genesis 3:14. Genesis 3:14 And the LORD God said to the serpent, “Because you have done this, Cursed are you more than all cattle, And more than every beast of the field; On your belly shall you go, And dust shall you eat All the days of your life; (NAS) Here is an image of the Leningrad Codex of the same verse. I have circled the vowels in the Tetragrammaton. remember that Hebrew reads from right to left. YHVH Leningrad Codex Genesis 3:14 Aleppo Codex The Leningrad Codex, although complete, is not considered the best quality Hebrew manuscript. The Aleppo Codex ranks first among the Hebrew manuscripts and derives its name from the city in Syria where it had been located. Regarding the Aleppo Codex I know of at least one occurrence of יְהֺוָה, Ezekiel 28:22. And I have it on good authority that there are a few more. Ezekiel 28:22 and say, ‘Thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am against you, O Sidon, And I shall be glorified in your midst. Then they will know that I am the LORD, when I execute judgments in her, And I shall manifest My holiness in her. (NAS) As you can see below YHVH has the same vowel pointing as in the 52 occurrences in the Leningrad Codex. YHVH Aleppo Codex Ezekiel 28:22 1611 King James The King James Version (KJV), also known as Authorized Version (AV) or simply King James Bible (KJB), is an English translation of the Christian Bible for the Church of England begun in 1604 and completed in 1611. The following is an image of the cover page of the 1611 King James Version. A the top of the page I have circled the Tetrgrammaton. Notice the cholem, above the first “heh” from the right. God’s name on this cover has the exact same vowel pointing as the few occurrences observed in the Leningrad and Aleppo Codices. 1611 King James Cover Karlskirche (St. Charles’s Church) in Vienna, Austria Karlskirche (St. Charles’s Church) is a baroque church located on the south side of Karlsplatz in Vienna, Austria. Widely considered the most outstanding baroque church in Vienna, as well as one of the city’s greatest buildings, Karlskirche is dedicated to Saint Charles Borromeo, one of the great counter-reformers of the sixteenth century. Construction began in 1716 under the supervision of Anton Erhard Martinelli. Karlskirche (St. Charles’s Church) in Vienna, Austria Karlskirche (St. Charles’s Church) in Vienna, Austria 1617 Reformation Anniversary Medal 1617 Reformation Anniversary Medal Karl IX 1/2 Ore, Sweden, Struck 1599 Karl IX 1/2 Ore, Sweden, Struck 1599 These examples provided more evidence that many understanding that God’s name is pronounced Yehovah. This of itself is not proof but does build upon other evidence that has been provided. The instances contained the Leningrad and Aleppo Codices offer the most compelling evidence. In this final episode I want to introduce two more pieces of information. First is a manuscript I only recently learned about. At the British Museum in London resides a 17th century Hebrew translation of the book of Revelation. Yes, the New Testament book of Revelation. This has been one of the neatest things I have learned of. I have an image of chapter one verse 8. Here is that same verse in the New American Standard version: Revelation 1:8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.” (NASB) Now that same verse in the manuscript: Revelation to John, Hebrew Translation, 17th century, British Library, London You will notice in the left margin Hebrew letters that represent verse numbers. Hebrew letters have a numerical equivalent. Aleph (א) is one, Bet (ב), is two, and so on. The letter Chet (ח) is equal to eight. To the far right on this line is the beginning of verse eight. It reads “I am the Aleph and the Tav says Yehovah the God”. As you can see I have circled the Name of God: יְהֹוָה The Name has the missing cholem, the single dot above and to the left of the first heh. The Name is pointed exactly as we saw in the Leningrad and Aleppo manuscripts, simply amazing! Here we have a 17th century scribe either translating or copying an even older Hebrew version of Revelation and they agree that the Name of God is Yehovah. To me this is incredible evidence to support the pronunciation of Yehovah. Another intersting observation is in the Hebrew we read “I am the Alpeh and the Tav”. Teh Greek is “I am the Alpha and Omega”. These are the first and last letters of the Hebrew and Greek alphabets (aleph+bet). Yehovah is the beginning and end! This idea ties into my next point. He Will Be, He Is, and He Was The name of God was made known to Moshe: Exodus 3:14 And God said to Moses, “I AM WHO I AM“; and He said, “Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.'” (NASB) The Hebrew for the phrase “I Am Who I Am” is: ‎ אֶהְיֶ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר אֶֽהְיֶ֑ה  ehye asher ehye Or literally “I am that which I am”, or “I will be that which I will be”. The Hebrew verb is הָיָה, haya, or “to be”, it is in the qal imperfect 1st person masculine singular form. If we look at three other forms of this verb in the 3rd person we have: הָיָה hayah, qal perfect 3rd person masculine singular Genesis 6:9 These are the records of the generations of Noah. Noah was a righteous man, blameless in his time; Noah walked with God. (NASB) ‎הֹוֶה hoveh, qal active participle masculine singular (this may be used for the present tense to “to be”) Ecclesiastes 2:22 For what does a man get in all his labor and in his striving with which he labors under the sun? (NASB) This is literally “what is for a man” יִהְיֶה yiyeh, qal imperfect 3rd person masculine singular Genesis 16:12 “He will be a wild donkey of a man, His hand will be against everyone, And everyone’s hand will be against him; And he will live to the east of all his brothers.” (NASB) If we combine these forms we get the prefix ye from the imperfect (future), the prefix hov from the participle (present), and the suffix ah, from the perfect (past) we get Yehovah, the one who will be, is, and was! I doubt that this is a coincidence. Isaiah 41:4 “Who has performed and accomplished it, Calling forth the generations from the beginning? ‘I, the LORD, am the first, and with the last. I am He.'” (NASB) Revelation 22:13 “I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end.” (NASB) Not only does God tell us he is the first and the last but his name is a compound of three verbs meaning he will be, he who is, and he who was, I am That What I Am! One other thing. There is a possibility that in ancient Hebrew the vav was pronounced as a “w” instead of a “v”. I think the evidence is weak but that would make the Name is Yehowah instead of Yehovah. I hope you have enjoyed this study as much as I have. I am very confident that the Name is Yehovah. Use this name in your personal time with God. Call on his Name just as he asks us to. I am confident God will honor you in your quest to call on Him by His true Name. Numbers 6:24 The LORD bless you, and keep you; 25 The LORD make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you; 26 The LORD lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace.’ 27 “So they shall invoke My name on the sons of Israel, and I then will bless them.” Not many days from now the Kohanim, the Levitical priests, will once again be speaking the Name of God, Yehovah, in the Temple in Jerusalem. Until then God Bless. The post The Name Of God Pt 6 CSN 0124 appeared first on The Christian Survival Network.

The Name Of God Pt 5 CSN 0123
During our last episode I provided many examples of Biblical names that contained shortened forms of YHVH either at the beginning or at the end. These names are called theophoric names. When combining the beginning and ending shortened forms we got Yehovah. Next week I will make a complete review of our findings but today I want to show to you historical examples of YHVH pointed as Yehovah or in Hebrew: יְהֹוָה Before we go further I want to review the consonants and vowels one more time. Remember that we read Hebrew from right to left. The first Letter is a yod with a sheva underneath. יְ The yod is a Consonant and is pronounced as our “y”. The sheva is not technically a vowel but can act as a vocal vowel or be silent. The rules regarding a sheva are complex, but for our purpose we only need to know that when it begins a word it is vocal. The sound is a short “eh”. Together its “ye”. Next we have a heh with a cholem above it. הֹ The heh is a consonant pronounced as our “h”. The cholem is a vowel pronounced as a long “o”. Together its “ho”. Next we have the consonant vav with a qamets. וָ The consonant vav is pronounced as a “v”. The qamets is a vowel pronounced as a short “a”. Together its “va”. The last letter is another heh, which in this case is silent. Altogether we have: יְהֹוָה     Yehovah Now that we understand the composition of the Name, lets look at more compelling evidence for this pronunciation. Leningrad Codex The Leningrad Codex is the oldest complete manuscript of the Hebrew Bible. Codex is Latin for an ancient manuscript in book form. It was written in Cairo around the year 1010. It resides in the National Library of St. Petersburg, Russia. The Leningrad and Aleppo Codex are of the famous Ben Asher family of scribes who lived in Tiberias. The two manuscripts are regarded as the primary codices of the Masoretic tradition. Because the Leningrad Codex is the oldest intact, complete, edition of the Hebrew Bible, it is frequently used as the basis for modern editions such as the Biblia Hebraica Stuttgartensia (BHS). It is the Leningrad Codex (BHS) that underlies most editions of the Modern English Bible including the New American Standard Bible (NASB), the English Standard Version (ESV), the New King James Version (NKJV), and the New International Version (NIV). However, all of these refer to other manuscripts as well for their translations. There are 52 occurrences of יְהֺוָה (with the vowels) in the Leningrad Codex. The first letter is the yod, י. Directly underneath the yod is a sheva, two vertical dots, which I have circled in red. The sheva, in this case, produces and “eh” sound, as in “yeh”. The next letter is a “heh”, ה. To the top left of the “heh” is a small dot called a “cholem”, again I have identified this vowel with a red circle. The “cholem” produces an “oh” sound. THus far we have “Yeho”. The next letter is a vav, ו. This is a consonant, a “v” sound. Directly underneath the “vav” is another vowel, a “kamatz”. The “kamatz” looks like a small capital letter “T”. This produces an “ah” sound. The last letter is another consonant, “heh”, as we had earlier and it is silent. The complete pronunciation is “Yehovah”. YHVH Leningrad Codex Genesis 3:14 All Leningrad references with cholem: Gen. 3:14, 9:26, 18:17, Exod. 3:2, 13:3, 9, 12, 15, 14:1, 8, Lev. 23:34, 25:17, Deut. 31:27, 32:9, 33:12, 13, 1 Ki. 3:5, 16:33, Ps. 15:1, 40:5, 47:6, 100:5, 116:5, 6, Prov. 1:29, Jer. 2:37, 3:1, 13, 21, 22, 23, 25, 4:3, 4, 8, 5:2, 3, 9, 15, 18, 19, 22, 29, 6:9, 8:13, 30:10, 36:8, Ezek. 33:23, 44:5, 46:13, Hos. 10:3, Nah. 1:3 Aleppo Codex The Leningrad Codex, although complete, is not considered the best quality Hebrew manuscript. The Aleppo Codex ranks first among the Hebrew manuscripts and derives its name from the city in Syria where it had been located. The Codex can be viewed online at aleppocodex.org. Regarding the Aleppo Codex I know of at least one occurrence of יְהֺוָה, Ezekiel 28:22. It was first printed by the King’s Printer Robert Barker and was the third translation into English approved by the English Church authorities. The first had been the Great Bible, commissioned in the reign of King Henry VIII (1535), and the second had been the Bishops’ Bible of 1568. The translation was done by 47 scholars, all of whom were members of the Church of England. In common with most other translations of the period, the New Testament was translated from Greek, the Old Testament from Hebrew and Aramaic, and the Apocrypha from Greek and Latin. By the first half of the 18th century, the Authorized Version had become effectively unchallenged as the English translation used in Anglican and English Protestant churches, except for the Psalms and some short passages in the Book of Common Prayer of the Church of England. Over the course of the 18th century, the Authorized Version supplanted the Latin Vulgate as the standard version of scripture for English-speaking scholars. There is no documented history, that I am aware of, as to why the early printings added the vowels as shown. 1611 King James Cover Here we have the 1611 King James cover page of the New Testament. Notice the same vowel pointing. 1611 King James New Testament Cover The First Bishops Bible The Bishop’s Bible succeeded the Great Bible of 1539, the first authorized bible in English, and the Geneva Bible of 1557-1560. The Bishops’ Bible is an English translation which was produced under the authority of the established Church of England in 1568. It was substantially revised in 1572, and the 1602 edition was prescribed as the base text for the King James Bible that was completed in 1611. (Wikipedia contributors. “Bishops’ Bible.” Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia, 24 Dec. 2016. Web. 16 Mar. 2017.) First Bishops Bible Karlskirche (St. In 1713, one year after the last great plague epidemic, Charles VI, Holy Roman Emperor, pledged to build a church for his namesake patron saint, Charles Borromeo, who was revered as a healer for plague sufferers. An architectural competition was announced, in which Johann Bernhard Fischer von Erlach prevailed over, among others, Ferdinando Galli-Bibiena and Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. Construction began in 1716 under the supervision of Anton Erhard Martinelli. After J.B. Fischer’s death in 1723, his son, Joseph Emanuel Fischer von Erlach, completed the construction in 1737 using partially altered plans. The church originally possessed a direct line of sight to the Hofburg and was also, until 1918, the imperial patron parish church. (Wikipedia contributors. “Karlskirche.” Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia. Wikipedia, The Free Encyclopedia, 20 Jan. 2017. Web. 16 Mar. 2017.) This of itself is not proof but does support the conclusion reached in our last podcast that Biblically,  there is evidence for these vowel points and pronunciation. Of course the instances contained the Leningrad and Aleppo Codices offer the most compelling evidence. Next week we’ll put this all together as I summarize our findings.   The post The Name Of God Pt 5 CSN 0123 appeared first on The Christian Survival Network.

The Name Of God Pt 4 CSN 0122
Dead Sea – Great Isaiah Scroll Isaiah 12:4 Today we begin Part Four of The Name Of God series. In previous episodes we looked at several verses which speak of praising the Name of the LORD, calling upon the Name of the LORD, and also punishment for blaspheming the Name or making vain oaths in the Name of the LORD. We saw that God has only one proper Name, although we find many titles describing God’s character. Psalm 83:18 That they may know that You alone, whose name is the LORD, Are the Most High over all the earth. Isaiah 42:8 “I am the LORD, that is My name; I will not give My glory to another, Nor My praise to graven images. Jeremiah 33:2 “Thus says the LORD who made the earth, the LORD who formed it to establish it, the LORD is His name, Hosea 12:5 Even the LORD, the God of hosts, The LORD is His name. Amos 5:8 He who made the Pleiades and Orion And changes deep darkness into morning, Who also darkens day into night, Who calls for the waters of the sea And pours them out on the surface of the earth, The LORD is His name. However, his Name is not found in English Bibles. In most mainline English translations the Name of God is translated as LORD, although this is not a translation but merely a substitution for the real Name of God. In an introductory paragraph of my New American Standard Bible the Lockman Foundation describes this translation quirk. They admit to the substitution and that they are not sure what the Name is. To be precise we have the consonants in our Hebrew manuscripts but not the vowels for the Name, or do we. We may find some indication of God’s name by examining the names of other Biblical characters. Why is this? Because many individuals in the Old Testament were named after God, often times a characteristic of God. These are called theophoric names. Theophoric is a Greek term meaning “bearing god” and is a term used to describe a name that has embedded within it the name of a god, or in our case the Name of the God. Perhaps examining several of these names will give us a clue to to vowels of YHVH and the pronunciation. This is our goal in episode four. We will examine two types of names, those with God’s name at the beginning and those with His name at the end. Nearly all names in our English Bibles have been transliterated into English, that is not translated but phonetically transcribed to duplicate the pronunciation. These pronunciations have become corrupted in English  but will will correct this based upon the Mastoretic nikudim. Theophoric Beginning Names Lets first look at examples of theophoric names that begin with God’s name. We will look at several names then summarize our findings. This first group names also includes the first three consonants of YHVH. As we pronounce these names it will helpful to reference this Hebrew Vowel chart. Hebrew Vowel points, Nikud Joshua Joshua is the English transliteration of the Hebrew יהושע. Unfortunately this is a poor transliteration. Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: יְהוֹשֻעַ Referencing the vowel chart, the correct pronunciation is Yehoshua. You have likely noticed that every “J” has been changed to a “Y”. The “J” sound does not exist in Hebrew. The letter “J” has an interesting history which you may research yourself but as a quick summation the letter “J” is a modification of the Latin I and dates back with a separate value only to the 15th century. It was first used as a special form of an initial I, the ordinary form being kept for use in other positions. In many cases an initial i had the consonantal value of the English y. The symbol came to be used for the value of y, a value which it still retains in German: Ja, Jung, etc. Initially it is pronounced in English as dzh. The important thing to remember is that the letter “J” has nothing to do with YHVH or Jesus because both these names are of Hebrew origin and not English. Jesus is an English representation of Yeshua. Jonathan Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: יְהוֹנָתָן The correct pronunciation is Yehonatan. Another compound word, YHVH and natan, meaning YHVH gives. Jehoiakim Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: יְהוֹיָקִים The correct pronunciation is Yehoyakim. Another compound word, YHVH and koom, meaning YHVH raises up. Jehozadak Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: יְהוֹצָדָק The correct pronunciation is Yehotsadak. Another compound word, YHVH and tsadaq, meaning YHVH is righteous. Jehoahaz Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: יְהוֹאָחָז The correct pronunciation is Yehoachaz. Another compound word, YHVH and achaz, meaning YHVH takes possession. Jehonadab Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: יְהוֹנָדָב The correct pronunciation is Yehonadav. Another compound word, YHVH and nadav, meaning YHVH is willing. Jehoiarib Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: יְהוֹיָרִיב The correct pronunciation is Yehoyariv. Another compound word, YHVH and riv, meaning YHVH contends. Theophoric Ending Names Now lets turn to Biblical Hebrew names that end with God’s name. In this case including the last consonant of YHVH Zechariah Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: זְכַרְיָה The correct pronunciation is Zecharyah. Another compound word, zachar and ya, with ya being a shortened version of YHVH. The name means ya remembers or YHVH remembers. Uriah Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: אוּרִיָה The correct pronunciation is Ooriah. Another compound word, ore and ya, with ya being a shortened version of YHVH. The name means YHVH is light. This a good illustration of, in Hebrew, vowels change when a word is compounded or a prefix or suffix is added. The Hebrew word אור is pronounced or, but with the added letters and vowel the pronunciation changes. Obadiah Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: עֹבַדְיָה The correct pronunciation is Ovadya. Another compound word, avad and ya, with ya being a shortened version of YHVH. The name means servant of YHVH. Hezekiah Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: חִזְקִיָה The correct pronunciation is Chizkiya. Another compound word, chazak and ya. The name means YHVH strengthens. Ahaziah Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: אַחַזְיָהוּ The correct pronunciation is Achazeyahu. Another compound word, achaz and ya, with ya being a shortened version of YHVH. The name means YHVH possesses. Here we see a personal suffix, ו. Literally then we would have YHVH himself possesses. There are many Biblical names with this ending, yahu. Hananiah Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: חַנַנְיָה The correct pronunciation is Chananeya. Another compound word, chanan and ya. The name means YHVH is merciful. Isaiah Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: יְשַעְיָהוּ This name has been poorly transliterated, the correct pronunciation is Yeshayahu. Another compound word, yasha and ya. The name means YHVH saves. Mattithiah Here is the Hebrew with the vowel points: מַתִתְיָהוּ Many Jewish names in the New Testament has been transformed into Greek and then English but originated in Hebrew. This is the Hebrew name of Matthew, and would no doubt have been pronounced this way in the days of Yeshua, Matityahu. Another compound word, matat and ya. The name means gift of YHVH. These are just of few of theophoric in the Hebrew Bible. In addition to the ones we reviewed there are many other variations of theophoric names but these, of which there are many more, reference YHVH as Yehoxxx and xxxya. Lets look at another Biblical Hebrew word that may be of interest to you. Hallelujah הַלְלוּיָה Haleluyah is another compound word made of halal and ya, which means praise YHVH, or most translations have “praise the LORD”. I hope you are beginning to see that Yehovah is a possible pronunciation of God’s name. While the evidence thus far is not 100% these theophoric names have provided a very credible possibility. However, I want you to be aware there are arguments for many other possible pronunciations, all of which I believe fall short. You may research these yourself if you chose to. During our next time together we will dig deeply into the Aleppo and Leningrad Codexes for additional clues. The post The Name Of God Pt 4 CSN 0122 appeared first on The Christian Survival Network.

The Name Of God Pt 3 CSN 0121
The Name of God is a very controversial subject as we have thus far discovered. However, I believe the Name can unleash an empowered personal relationship with the Creator of the Universe. First though, we have to rediscover the “lost” name of God. In this episode we will examine the actual manuscripts our English Old Testament is derived upon which will continue to build the foundation of our study. We have already covered a lot of material in this series, and if your mind gets fuzzy after a week like mine then it would be wise to review what we have covered thus far. God has only one proper Name God instructs us to “praise the Name” God expects us to “call on the Name” God warns us not to “blaspheme” or take the Name “in vain”. The Old Testament autographs did not contain written vowels The consonants of the Name are in extant Hebrew manuscripts The Masoretes dedicated themselves to the preservation of the TANAKH Our English Old Testament is based upon Masoretic manuscripts The Masoretes codified a vowel system so that the pronunciation of the TANAKH would not be lost The nikudim, or vowel points did not alter the orginal text or letters By around the first century the Name of God was only pronounced in the Temple by the High Priest once a year, on the Day of Atonement The Rabbinic Jews built a fence around the pronunciation of the Name The Masoretes purposely removed and/or changed the vowels of the Name. Moses wrote in Paleo Hebrew The Masoretic manuscript are written in Square Hebrew As I said we have already covered a great deal of material but have much more  to go. New material builds upon previous material so it’s important to listen to all the episodes of this series in order. Our English versions of the Old Testament (scholarly versions) were derived from the best Hebrew manuscripts at the time. Manuscripts of the Old Testament are not as vast as the multitude of witnesses for the Greek New Testament, nor is it as comprehensive. Even with the Dead Sea Scrolls there remains a large gap of centuries between the time of the autographs and our earliest Hebrew manuscripts. We have in the Greek New Testament copies that are only 300 to 400 years removed from the autographs but our Hebrew Old Testament texts are nearly 2,400 years removed from Moses. The most important Hebrew manuscripts include the Leningrad Codex, the Aleppo Codex, and the Crown of Damascus, all three of these are of the Masoretic tradition. In addition we have the recent discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls, a thousand years earlier than the Leningrad. It is the Leningrad Codex (BHS) that underlies most editions of the Modern English Bible including the New American Standard Bible (NASB), the English Standard Version (ESV), the New King James Version (NKJV), and the New International Version (NSV). However, all of these refer to other manuscripts as well for their translations. Aleppo Codex The Leningrad Codex, although complete, is not considered the best quality Hebrew manuscript. The Aleppo Codex ranks first among the Hebrew manuscripts and derives its name from the city in Syria where it had been located. The Codex can be viewed online at aleppocodex.org. The site’s introduction includes the following: The Aleppo Codex is a full manuscript of the entire Bible, which was written about 930 A.D. For more than a thousand years, the manuscript was preserved in its entirety in important Jewish communities in the Near East: Tiberias, Jerusalem, Egypt, and in the city of Aleppo in Syria. However, in 1947, after the United Nations Resolution establishing the State of Israel, it was damaged in riots that broke out in Syria. At first people thought that it had been completely destroyed. Later, however, it turned out that most of the manuscript had been saved and kept in a secret hiding place. In 1958, the Aleppo Codex was smuggled out of Syria to Jerusalem and delivered to the President of the State of Israel, Izhak Ben-Zvi. The Aleppo Codex, as it reached Israel, has 294 parchment pages, written on both sides. Examination revealed that many pages were missing as a result of the damage to the Codex in 1947. Mainly the first part of the manuscript was damaged, the Pentateuch, of which only the last eleven pages remained. Almost all of the Five Books of Moses had been lost, except the final chapters of the Book of Deuteronomy, which were preserved. The final pages of the Aleppo Codex are also missing, including part of the Song of Songs, and all of Ecclesiastes, Lamentations, Esther, Daniel, Ezra, and Nehemiah. In the rest of the books of the prophets, some pages are missing. In all, the Aleppo Codex originally had 487 pages. Originally contained the entire Hebrew Bible and was written in the 10th century. In the late 1980s, the codex was placed in the Shrine of the Book at the Israel Museum in Jerusalem. Shrine of the Book Crown Of Damascus The Crown of Damascus is a 10th century Hebrew Bible codex of the Pentateuch containing the first Five Books of Moses. The codex was copied by an unknown scribe, replete with Masoretic annotations. The manuscript is lacking in its beginning, as it starts with Genesis 9:26 (Exodus 18:1–23 is also missing). It was acquired by the Jewish National and University Library in 1975 It is one of the oldest extant Bible codices, ranking with that of the Aleppo Codex and Leningrad Codex. In many places, the Damascus Pentateuch follows the traditions of the masorete, Aaron ben Asher. It is written on parchment, in three columns to the page, in large square script typical of writing scripts used in the 9th century. Like other codices of its era, it bears micrography known as the Masora Magna (large Masora), that is, the preservation of the minutiæ of the text-tradition written as a gloss on the top and bottom of each page, as well as the Masora Parva (small Masora) written in between the columns. It was acquired by the Jewish National and University Library in 1975. Dead Sea Scrolls In March 1948 an Arab boy looking for his lost goat stumbled upon the most significant manuscript discovery of the century. In all about 800 scrolls, including thousands of fragments have been uncovered. These scrolls were produced by a deeply religious community known as the Essenes. Apparently the scrolls were put in these caves for safe keeping during the time the Romans were putting down the Jewish rebellion. Many scrolls concern only the peculiar beliefs of the community however, many fragments and substantial portions of the Old Testament were also included. Altogether there are about 200 texts of the Old Testament, but many of these are no more than fragments. The book of Psalms is represented by (36) manuscripts, Deuteronomy (29), Isaiah (21), Exodus (17), Genesis (15) and so forth. A portion of every Old Testament book was discovered except for the book of Esther. Comparison Of Manuscripts Now I would like to compare The Leningrad, Aleppo, and Great Isaiah Scroll to our English Old Testament. Our comparison text is Isaiah 12:4. ASV Isaiah 12:4 And in that day shall ye say, Give thanks unto Jehovah, call upon his name, declare his doings among the peoples, make mention that his name is exalted. JPS Isaiah 12:4 And in that day shall ye say: ‘Give thanks unto the LORD, proclaim His name, declare His doings among the peoples, make mention that His name is exalted. KJV Isaiah 12:4 And in that day shall ye say, Praise the LORD, call upon his name, declare his doings among the people, make mention that his name is exalted. NAS Isaiah 12:4 And in that day you will say, “Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name. Make known His deeds among the peoples; Make them remember that His name is exalted.” NAU Isaiah 12:4 And in that day you will say, “Give thanks to the LORD, call on His name. Make known His deeds among the peoples; Make them remember that His name is exalted.” NIV Isaiah 12:4 In that day you will say: “Give praise to the LORD, proclaim his name; make known among the nations what he has done, and proclaim that his name is exalted. In the BHS Hebrew text we have:   וַאֲמַרְתֶּם בַּיּוֹם הַהוּא הוֹדוּ לַיהוָה קִרְאוּ בִשְׁמוֹ הוֹדִיעוּ בָעַמִּים עֲלִילֹתָיו הַזְכִּירוּ כִּי נִשְׂגָּב שְׁמוֹ And now the manuscripts: Leningrad Codex Isaiah 12:4 Aleppo Codex Isaiah 12:4 Dead Sea – Great Isaiah Scroll Isaiah 12:4 In the images I circled the Name of YHVH. You will notice the nikudim in the Leningrad and Aleppo as they are both of the Masoretic tradition. The Great Isaiah scroll does not have the vowels as it was written long before the Masoretes developed the nikudim, or vowel pointing system. The important thing to notice is that in the Leningrad and Aleppo YHVH cannot be pronounced as it is lacking a vowel. You cannot pronounce YeHVaH. If, for example, YHVH is to be pronounced as Yehovah, then the “o” vowel is missing after the first “Hey”. We see then the intentional removal and changing of vowels when it comes to YHVH. However, there are a very few exceptions to this in both of these manuscripts. was this also intentional or simply an oversight? These we will look at in a future episode. Before I end today I wanted to show the difference between the Leningrad and Aleppo Square Hebrew and Paleo Hebrew, with which Moshe wrote the Torah. Tetragrammaton YHVH The first two line are variations of Paleo Hebrew for YHVH. You can see this on one of the Dead Sea Scrolls, a passage from the book of Psalms: Dead Sea Scroll Psalms Next time we will study many of the names in the Hebrew Bible and begin to unravel the mystery of YHVH. Till next time God bless. The post The Name Of God Pt 3 CSN 0121 appeared first on The Christian Survival Network.
