It's What We Like
What’s your favorite pen? Does it spark excitement? The Charlatans chat about the simple things in life that bring them joy. This episode was inspired by the idea that imposter syndrome can feel like it's taking so much away from you, but those tiny bits of fun and exhilaration in life can fill you up so much. From bird watching to Ikea trips, this episode is sure to spark a smile into your life. Have you experienced a small (or big!) win, or acknowledge something in your life that needed to change and you made it happen? We want to hear about it! Send us your Pivot Points on Instagram @charlatanspod or email us at charlatanspod@gmail.com. (We will always ask for your permission before we share your personal stories and/or information on our socials or podcast.)

Always an Imposter
Did you know that anywhere from 8-92% of people suffer from impostor syndrome? You heard us right. This somewhat comical statistic points to a bigger truth though, we’re basically all in this together. Taking inspiration from an Instagram graphic defining the 5 basic types of impostor syndrome, first laid out by Dr. Valerie Young, an expert on impostor syndrome in the workplace, we got deep about where we fit into those types; the perfectionist, the expert, the natural genius, the soloist, and the superwoman/superman. While our “types” are not meant to define our complex, dynamic human ways, we honestly reflect on whether or not we have learned how to recognize how our impostor syndrome manifests. And when it does, how do we give ourselves grace and calm that negative inner voice? Have you experienced a small (or big!) win, or acknowledge something in your life that needed to change and you made it happen? We want to hear about it! Send us your Pivot Points on Instagram @charlatanspod or email us at charlatanspod@gmail.com. Impodster Syndrome: Year One
Happy birthday to The Charlatans Podcast! We celebrated our one year anniversary this June and boy what a year it’s been. We realized that having to learn how to podcast on top of navigating massive personal and large-scale change from 2020 taught us a lot about personal boundaries and priorities. We didn’t have a ton of expectations for our podcast when we began, but we love that it has evolved into an audible diary of life in the past year. ALSO, we want to hear about moments where YOU defied your own odds, big or small, however you define it. We are calling this new segment, Pivot Point, and we really want to create a community of authenticity, empowerment, and openness around our podcast. Send us a DM on Instagram, Facebook, or via a good old-fashioned email. Don’t worry, we will always ask before we share your stories and if you want, you can remain anonymous. Thank you so much to everyone who has listened to our podcast, sent a nice message on our socials, and stuck around with us this past year. Here’s to the next one! Thank you to Max Young @maxwell_j_young for our artwork, Michael Lehman @thelongawake for our podcast music, and of course Joseph Szabo at @cellarstudio39 for use of their studio and editing.

In A Committed Midwesternship
We can’t help ourselves- we kick off this episode with some classic Midwestern awkwardness by describing memes (which we will share on our Instagram stories!) that highlight experiences you’re only aware of if you live in the Midwest. Anyone who grew up here can relate to not being able to go to the grocery store without seeing at least one cousin, how Illinois and Wisconsin will never be friends, and how our Midwest sixth sense means that we can always tell you which way is East because of good ol’ Lake Michigan. Whether you grew up here or found your home here as an adult, this is our love letter to Midwestern culture.

Comparing Dumpster Fires
Get ready for this episode, because the Charlatans are about to ignite a hot confessional on comparisons. We discuss how the way we compare ourselves creates our own self-talk and taking the time to celebrate our achievements can lower the comparison gauge. Bring. It. On.

Rough Professional Levelizing
The Charlatans discuss the gender differences in distinguishing what is or is not professional in the workplace and how the stakes can vary. Things get a little personal. Alyssa says the word “ding-a-ling”, Elise creates the word “levelize” and of course, Madelynn laughs a lot. Here’s to hoping we all get the equivalent of a Chromebook pinata in our workplaces.

Just My (Creative) Type
In this episode, the Charlatans discuss how creativity has connotations that lead many people to believe that they aren’t creative. Being a Conscious Earth Citizen
In this episode, we share how childhood experiences prompted our conscious “buy-in” to being environmentally aware. As adults, we are focused on family consumership- creating mindfulness at home with how our family produces waste and ways we can model positive behaviors to our children. We also question which habits contribute to excessive waste as well as how we maintain the function of our modern life while being mindful of which brands we engage with? Holding businesses and manufacturers responsible for using packaging and engaging in practices that are environmentally irresponsible, particularly when it comes to cosmetics and beauty companies. Throughout the episode, we drop tips on repurposing, small ways you can care for your neighborhood, how to think differently about the products you’re using, and influence change with your dollars. Thank you to Michael Lehman for our music and Max Young for our graphic illustrations. This episode was recorded and edited at Cellar Studio 39.

Media Burnout
I don’t know about you, but we are burned out. Between constant COVID-19 coverage to Election 2020 news, there is barely a moment to disconnect without feeling like you are missing out, or possibly even being irresponsible for ignoring the news. In this episode, we explore the various ways in which news is shared and how that is becoming increasingly detrimental to our mental health. Do we really understand how to source reliable information that truly does inform about the world around us? How is this phenomenon impacting our relationships as we are confronted with information that consistently reinforces our biases? How do we take a step back and protect our mental health while still engaging in our world? Thank you to Michael Lehman for the music. Episode recorded and edited at Cellar Studio 39.
