Tap, tap, tap... Is this thing on? | The Change of Shift Podcast Ep 35
Times are a'changin'... Today's episode is a recap of where we've been and where we're going. The show is going on hiatus for a bit while I figure out some things. As the one-man-show I'm being spread a little too thin with all of my social media ventures in addition to my real-life passions and responsibilities. I need to figure out where this Podcast will fit in. Six months into this show and it's just not developing into what I had hoped, nor am I able to spend the time to keep trying. I've been eternally thankful for the attention it has gained, but it's just not a wise investment. Not to mention I'm providing great value and content in another area of the internet that is  garnering great dialogue and conversation. I'll be pressing the pause button on The Change of Shift Podcast to decide if it's something that is wanted. Maybe it will be a bi-weekly or monthly Podcast... but I foresee that not being a great option. In the meantime come say hi over on my Facebook fan page (or other social media websites). When I'm not on Facebook you can find me on Snapchat.   Until next time... http://seandent.com/ https://www.facebook.com/IamSeanDent/ https://www.snapchat.com/add/seanpdent   ---THE CHANGE OF SHIFT PODCAST:  WHERE NURSING MEETS THE INTERNET.The goal of this podcast is to solve problems, review topics, and share actionable information that encompass the professional and personal lives of Healthcare Professionals and Nurses.Subscribe, Download and listen while we discuss current events, impactful stories and invaluable lessons from the front lines of Health Care.Website: http://thechangeofshift.com/ Music attribute via Free Music Archive:http://freemusicarchive.org/music/Jonas/Pindarotsjes_1552/Jonas_The_Plugexpert_-_Pindarotsjes_-_04_Dennis_beat_1168

My first code blue | The Change of Shift Podcast Ep 34
The dreaded code blue! Contrary to what most believe.... Hollywood definitely gets this one wrong.I've been doing this job for over ten years, and I still remember that first time. That first code. How unbelievably scary it was. I remember sweating bullets. And all I wanted to do was disappear into the far wall.Maybe if I don't say anything, nobody will know I'm there??The great news? Everyone feels this way during their first patient cardiac arrest. It's scary, it's overwhelming and it's  a stiff dose of  reality. Everyone also lives through it to try again.Just like everything else in our career, this too gets better each time you experience it. You become more comfortable, and you become more proficient.Let me tell you about my first code blue.   P.S. I'm looking for podcast guests! 10 time management tips for Nurses while on shift | The Change of Shift Podcast Ep 33
Time management skills are essential to our practice. It's what keeps us from 'drowning' while at work. You can always tell which Nurses have this skill mastered, and which Nurses struggle. It's a skill that can alleviate a great deal of stress in your everyday life as well as ensure you're in this for the 'long game'.Here are 10 tips I think will help you not only keep your head above water, but might even help you a stronger swimmer.    1. Accept you will start your day behind the 8 ball    2. Write everything down. I mean everything    3. Wear a watch with a timer or a ‘second’ hand    4. Brain sheets / cheat sheets / report sheets / colored pens & pencils / map out time slots    5. Utilize mobile devices    6. Expect the unexpected    7. Cluster your care - anticipate    8. Ask for feedback    9. Do not try and do it all - Nursing is a 24hr job    10. Break it down into smaller pieces   P.S. I'm looking for podcast guests! Why I became a Nurse | The Change of Shift Podcast Ep 32
Another story telling episode! I had recorded this episode some time ago, but felt the need to share it this week. Many Nurses enter this profession with the cookie cutter answer of "I just want to help people". While other Nurses enter this profession for financial gain. Whatever your 'reason' for enduring the struggle of becoming and being a Nurse, I hope your reason is of value. I chose this profession out of a personal experience as a patient. Take a listen. What is your story? Why do you become a Nurse?   P.S. I'm looking for podcast guests! Are you interested in telling your story, or know someone who would like to be a guest on the show? My most memorable patient | The Change of Shift Podcast Ep 31
Story time!   My most memorable patient. Every Nurse has one. That one patient, that one experience that grabbed your attention and shook you.   There are many patients  that we remember, but when you sit at the table and tell your ‘war stories’ with other Nurses, this story always comes up. That one story that just sticks out for some reason.   This is my story.   The longer you do this job, the more stories you will have. We’re great story tellers. And every story redefines us as professionals. This was one of those stories.   It reminded me that not everyone can do this job… and that I was exactly where I was supposed to be.   Thanks for listening! Care to share your story?   *Disclaimer: Names, places and other identifying pieces of information have either been left out or changed and modified to maintain patient privacy.   --- THE CHANGE OF SHIFT PODCAST:  WHERE NURSING MEETS THE INTERNET.    The goal of this podcast is to solve problems, review topics, and share actionable information that encompass the professional and personal lives of Healthcare Professionals and Nurses. Eating habits of Nurses working the NOC shift? | The Change of Shift Podcast Ep 30
I was contacted by a fellow Nurse via Twitter a while back. She had some questions and concerns about good eating habits. She works shifts as well as a lot of NOC shifts, and she tends to either eat the wrong food, not eat at all or graze all day. My guest, Samantha says:  "I flip between nights and days. One day I'm eating dinner at 2am and the next day I'm off work and eating at 5pm."   "I need to figure out a way to keep a better set diet for work days and off days."Samantha Shaw has been an LVN (LPN) working (mostly) in L&D since 2009. She's traveled and relocated several times and currently works as a contracted civilian "baby Nurse" for the Air Force attending deliveries and initiating NRP on newborns. She returned to school in 2010 working on college courses to advance her career and attain her RN license. She's hit a few bumps along the way with traveling, credits not transferring and tuition challenges, but hopes to sit for the TEAS entrance exam within the next 18 months! You can find Sam on various social media sites:https://twitter.com/SamanthaKShawhttps://www.facebook.com/skayeshttps://www.instagram.com/skayes/Here are a few of the Interview Questions and topics we discussed. Interview Jon Haws RN CCRN, founder of NRSNG.com | The Change of Shift Podcast Ep 28
I had the pleasure of interviewing Jon Haws RN CCRN, founder of NRSNG.com. We dive into Jon's history before entering the profession, and of  course talk about his website and online community at NRSNG.com. *Important note* : this interview was riddled with technical issues. My internet connection was not stable. This interview started and stopped three times, so I apologize ahead of time for the topic skipping. I did my best to weave it together seamlessly. From Jon's website: Are you sick of professors that just read from powerpoints, administration that doesn't seem to care, and being assigned to read 5,257 pages per night with little or no explanation on what you are actually learning?   I am an ICU nurse, Charge Nurse, preceptor, code team nurse, and mentor to nursing students and new nurses.  During nursing school I became to frustrated with the way nursing education was headed.    I am opening the playbook to nursing school and providing easy to understand materials, cheat sheets, and study tools to help you reach your goal of RN.   Some of NRSNG.com's impressive social media stats (at the time of the interview): -Over 50,000 followers on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and  YouTube -546,004 Podcast Downloads with over 85,000 downloads per month -52,733 Blog Subscribers  Here are the interview questions:   Fill in the blanks. Nursing professional development & FOANed -interview with Clin Nurse Educ. Wes | The Change of Shift Podcast Ep 27
What is professional development, and why should any Nurse care about it? Learning opportunities to augment your current and future skill practice. A way of maintaining your highest level of practice competency to provide optimum care to your patients. I interview Wes. He's a Clinical Nurse Educator of Emergency Services in a busy inner city Emergency Department. He’s been a nurse just over two and half years. Wes approached me on Twitter wanting to share his passion for education. Wes graduated with his BSN in Spring of 2013 and will start Nurse Anesthesia school in August 2016.   You can find Wes on Twitter  https://twitter.com/BSNGraduate2013 where he claims Electrocardiography and Airway Management are cool. Here are some of his interview questions: Your favorite part of Nursing? Least favorite part?  You’re a Clinical Nurse Educator in the ED (after only 2.5yrs in the profession). Tell us about that. Where did the passion for education come from? What do you find most challenging in your role? What do you find the most gratifying (enjoyable)? Why should other Nurses care about Education? Continuing Education? I mean we graduated and have our license. Isn’t that enough? FOAMed I’ve heard of, or is a little more known (at least 2 years). But FOANed? What advice do you have for new Nurses? Wes was kind enough to mention a couple Emergency Medicine professionals during our interview that have influenced him, here they are: @FLTDOC1 @emcrit @FlightBridgeED   Check out their profiles for all their information. When the nurse is the surgical patient |The Change of Shift Podcast Ep 25.5
*Bonus Episode* I chat with my friend Dr. Mike Sevilla. Mike is a family physician, social media guru, podcaster and long-time blogger. I sit down and share my (surgery) story from start to finish. Starting with the original knee injury (back on Christmas day 2015) up to my post-op struggles after experiencing my first surgical procedure on January 12th  a right knee meniscal repair via arthroscopy. I share my feelings. Being on the other side of the bedside was surreal and very enlightening on many levels. I share my unique perspective as a provider turned patient. Not many know that I worked in the Surgical services as well as work for an Orthopaedic surgeon for a short time during my Nursing career. So I offer an insiders view. Including the self-induced sky-high levels of anxiety I had as well as the no-excuses transparent judgmental approach I had to the care I received as the patient. --- THE CHANGE OF SHIFT PODCAST:  WHERE NURSING MEETS THE INTERNET.    This is a podcast where we solve problems, review topics, and share actionable information that encompass the professional and personal lives of Healthcare Professionals and Nurses.   Listen as we discuss current events, impactful stories and invaluable lessons from the front lines of Health Care (http://thechangeofshift.com/). 11 reasons why Nurses make the worst patients | The Change of Shift Podcast Ep 24
It’s not an urban myth, it’s not folklore and it’s not a rumor. Nurses make THE worst patients. I speak from experience here. Being on the other side of the bedside is scary and Nurses are notorious at not accepting such change. Here are 11 humorous truths as to why we stink at being the patient.   11 reasons why Nurses make the worst patients   We’re needy We judge everything We realize how bad of a nurse we have been We don’t listen We tell you what’s wrong and what to do We know who we don’t want We become THAT patient We love students.. but we really don’t We’re scared to death We hate giving up control We’re also the worst family members Thank you to everyone who tunes in to listen!! 3 (or 5) needed tips to guarantee resolution success  | The Change of Shift Podcast Ep 23
It’s that time of year, the “resolutioners” are back. The most popular time of the year to create and work towards a new and lofty goal in your life. For some reason, many people wait until the New Year to create and tackle a challenge.I for one believe the time of the year and the date on a calendar should not matter. This is the one time of the year where your stress level and lifestyle are all out of whack. Yet we pick this time of the year to challenge ourselves.is it  maybe a marketing ploy?Regardless of your views, goals are a part of our every day lives especially during the New Year. I thought I’d share some insights to help you succeed at your resolution.3 (or 5) suggestions to ensure New Years resolution success:1. Make it a simple goal. Period.2. Be sure to rely on yourself, not on someone or some thing.3. No resolutions, just decisions.4. No failures, just adjustments.5. No losing, just learning.   Thank you to everyone who has taken the time to listen, download and subscribe. Happy New Year! Can you handle that first year as a Nurse? | The Change of Shift Podcast Ep 22
How challenging is that first year as a Nurse? Is it so hard that Nurses want to quit? Dread going to work? Do Nurses need to “take medications” to just make it through a shift??? These questions were drawn from an article that I read: I fear for the future of Nursing that discussed the challenges new Nurses face. Here are the highlights to this episode: How hard is that first year?   Is there still a sink or swim attitude Are new nurses stating they can’t handle it and looking to get out Is our profession challenging.. are the patients are getting sicker? Large leap from student to graduate and licensed professional Do we shelter our students? Should we allow them to fail? It’s OK and actually expected that you will make a mistake      Should be no fear of repercussions      Is there a culture of blame and punishment?   Is there a lack of resources? Do we have a support system? How about severe mental illness? Are nurses depressed just because of their  chosen profession? I close out the episode with some suggestions that can help you in that first year.   5 tips to not only survive, but thrive during that first year as a Nurse: Be prepared for the hard. Expect the unexpected. Grow a thick set of skin by advocating for your patient and yourself. Ask questions. All the time every time. Do not get cocky. Talk to someone. Every day or every shift.
