"We're not just a company... we're like a family here!"😱Do you hear words like that and immediately feel tempted to run away? If so, I don't blame you. Is your employer your family? Nope. It seems like "we're a family" is a very popular form of corporate cult-speak. Key topics:✔️ Be careful of companies that operate like the mafia. No, your boss is not your parent and your coworkers are not your siblings. Give me a break.✔️ Loyalty is a two-way street. So often the companies that preach about how tight knit everyone supposedly is are the most toxic and deceitful! ✔️ In The Firm, Mitch is plied with lots of money, perks, and benefits. LOTS of money. It turns out that it was hush money as well as "we own your a$$ now" money. The more dependent you are on Corporate America, the more they own you. ✔️ There are companies who tell employees, "You will post the official narrative or there's the door." So can you trust shiny-happy-people-holding-hands social media posts? I don't recommend it. ✔️ If the company asks you illegal questions during the hiring process, please, please do not ignore that huge red flag. No matter how much money they offer you, please be careful. Special intro music: "Twilight Zone" by Golden Earring. The Better.com Firing
Subtitled: Like I needed yet another reason to detest Zoom. 😒I'm a bit late on this, but I couldn't not record an episode about the bizarre mass firing that took place via, what else, a frickin' Zoom call back in December.Key topics:✔️ I understand that during the pandemic, no one is going to fly in George Clooney à la Up in the Air to sit down with people in person and blow a bunch of smoke. But a mass firing via video call? Really? Seems pretty raw.✔️ The tone seemed monotone to me. I'm not sure that someone shedding crocodile tears would have been any better, but the whole mise en scène struck me as a robotic. ✔️ Be leery of any company that still relies on outdated sales metrics. They will set you up to fail and then blame you when their outmoded tactics do not work. Phone time is a great example.✔️ Worrying about what kind of food and beverage is in each office while referring to your own employees as "dumb dolphins" is screwed the hell up. Special intro music: "Better Now" by Post Malone.Links I discuss in this episode:https://nypost.com/2021/12/06/better-com-ceo-fires-900-employees-on-zoom-call/Need more? Bonus Episode: WFH, Offices, & "Culture"
Over the past month, LinkedIn has posted several articles questioning how working from home impacts everything from developing a company culture to making new "friends" at work to whether a right to disconnect will ever come to the US. Key topics:✔️ If the only way in your life to potentially meet new people and make some new pals is by being butt-in-seat at an office, you need to take a hard look at why that is. I understand that Covid has impaired the ability for people to go out and about; with that said, there are still a plethora of ways to connect with new people that don't involve forcing social activities on your colleagues. ✔️ Render unto Caesar that which is Caesar's. If you're working, then work. And after work, step away from the laptop. Turn off that Slack channel. Do not tell clients that you're available 24/7.✔️Who are the people pushing so hard for a return to the office? Who are the ones bleating the loudest that the company won't have a culture anymore if everyone stays remote? Well, typically, it's micromanagers and lonely extroverts who want to corral everyone back to the office whether it's actually safe to do so or not.Need more? Workplace Psychopathy - Have You Been a Victim?
Statistically, it's impossible to be sure how many people in the general population are truly psychopaths. Yet I wouldn't be at all surprised if you have encountered a workplace psychopath at some point in your career.Trigger warning: I will be treading into some very dark and disturbing content here, including abuse. If at any point you are concerned this could be triggering for you, turn this episode off.Key topics:✔️ Some people use "psychopath" and "sociopath" interchangeably, but this is not correct. I am using the term psychopath intentionally in this episode.✔️ Psychopaths can be superficially charming and they can be talented liars. They can also be One-Eyed Jacks: many people may be fooled by their façade but what if YOU have seen the other side of their face? ✔️ Don't allow yourself to be gaslighted, either by yourself or others. Also use caution. If you are worried that someone might try to harm you, make sure you stay safe. Psychopaths can lash out if they are worried that you might expose them for who and what they are.✔️ Someone may have a carefully constructed persona that includes charity work, volunteerism, constant church attendance, etc., yet still be engaged in horrible activities in secret. Happy Holidays & The Yuletide ❄️
A quick episode to wish you all a wonderful holiday, whatever you may celebrate. I also encourage you to use this time for rest. 2020 and 2021 have been strange years; this is a good time to recuperate and do things you enjoy simply for their own sake. The show will be on hiatus after this as I will be following my own advice and indulging in some dolce far niente. 😊 New episodes return on Thursday, January 6th when I will be talking about Workplace Psychopathy. If you suspect you have been the victim of a workplace psychopath or you know someone else who could be, it's an episode not to be missed.Special intro music: "Christmas Time All Over The World" by Sammy Davis Jr.Special outro music: "By the Fireside" by Jo Stafford.

The Great Resignation, Part 2
Part II of my take on The Great Resignation. Some folks are proposing that we stop calling it "the Great Resignation" in favor of something warmer and fluffier, but I disagree. I think we need some of that "I'm a person, not a robot" energy in Corporate America. No one rules if no one obeys. ✊ Key topics:✔️ Here's a dirty little secret: all these video conferences and video interviews can be and sometimes are used for discriminatory purposes. If some company is browbeating you about showing up on video when there seems to be no coherent reason for it, ask yourself why that might be. ✔️ The same people who act like jerk managers to their employees within a company do not deserve to be in your freelancing business either. They will make your life a living hell, too. They need to stop being jerks!✔️ Running on the hamster wheel of consumerism and "keeping up with the Joneses" will keep you trapped in Corporate America. I've lived long enough to see Gordon Gekko go from vilified yuppie who demonstrated 1980s excess to hearing him give the most cogent explanation of the burst housing bubble of the late 00s I've ever heard. And be aware: we're headed for the same territory again. More on this topic in a future episode. ✔️ The magic salary number of $75K for happiness is 10+ years old. Adjusted for inflation, it's more like $95K now. Some companies want to pay yesteryear's wages and then wonder why no one is interested. The Great Resignation, Part 1
Take this job and shove it!More people are deciding to quit rather than putting up with a micromanager or jerky boss, working constantly, having to get on 58 Zoom calls a week, etc. So what's'a'goin'on with all of this? Key topics:✔️ In the same way that no one cares if Billy Bob's Staffing Agency won't represent them if they decline a job offer, guess what - the same is true now with actual hiring companies. The days of ghosting candidates and acting like an a-hole during the interview process yet still expecting to attract in talent are gone. ✔️ Likewise, acting like a jerk to your employees and expecting them to stay and obey = not gonna do it.✔️ People are getting tired of trading time or labor for money. Let's examine the results and stop obsessing about the process.✔️ "But, but, no one wants ta work now!" Really? A person applied to 60 jobs he was qualified for, got 1 offer and it was a lowball. Companies are the candidates now. Job seekers want to know what you have to offer them and it ain't foosball tables in the break room or unlimited sodey pops in the fridge.Links I discuss in this episode:Russell Brand's episode: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_32hy0FLoecLogical Finance video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d88Lkr-TzjI&t=416shttps://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archive/2021/10/great-resignation-accelerating/620382/https://www.orlandoweekly.com/Blogs/archives/2021/10/20/a-florida-man-applied-for-60-entry-level-jobs-in-a-month-to-prove-the-so-called-labor-shortage-is-a-mythhttps://time.com/6106322/the-great-resignation-jobs/Need more? Decoding Job Descriptions: What Do They Actually Mean?
Here we are in the midst of The Great Resignation and yet: so many companies don't get it. I still see job descriptions and terms that make me wince. Key topics:✔️ "Hungry" may mean you'll go hungry if you work there. Or that you'll be fired if you don't work 80 hours but get paid for 40.✔️ I remember turning down a job offer when the manager told me, "I want you scared. I like employees who are scared. If you're scared you'll lose your house or get the car repossessed, you'll be a top producer." HARD PASS. 🤮✔️If the company feels the need to say, "No one likes a jerk," ask yourself why that might be. It's such a silly statement of the obvious that it makes you wonder if they have a higher jerk-to-nice-person ratio on staff already. Or if they assume anyone who thinks for themselves is a jerk. ✔️Anything that sounds like cult speak should be an automatic red flag. LuLaRich and Corporate Cults 😵
Last December, I recorded an episode called "Cult-Like Tactics Used in Corporate America & Why Self-Help Often Doesn't Help" after watching the Starz documentary on NXIVM. Now here we are about a year later with the LuLaRich documentary on Amazon Prime recounting the turmoil of LuLaRoe. Key topics:✔️ Yes, MLMs and pyramid schemes utilize the same tactics as religious and sex cults. So does Corporate America. The more the culture tells you, "You must be one of us... one of us... one of us..." the more you're in a freakin' cult. ✔️ Be careful of environments where you get love-bombed and people are required to talk about how the place is "like a family." Those love-bombs can turn into a lot of malice if you step out of line. ✔️ Know your own rights. If you suspect that your employer is engaging in discrimination and/or placing requirements on you that go against the EEOC or Civil Rights Act, consult with a legal professional for help.✔️ When we are in the thick of something, we may not always understand just how dire the situation is. Trust your gut and use good judgment. If something sounds too good to be true...Special intro music: "How to Be a Millionaire" by ABC.Links I discuss in this episode:https://www.rollingstone.com/culture/culture-features/lularich-docuseries-lularoe-mlm-cult-1228224/https://www.huffpost.com/entry/how-corporate-america-is-_b_2171040https://www.mandatory.com/living/1567161-17-signs-youre-in-a-cult-or-just-working-for-corporate-americahttps://www.consumer.ftc.gov/articles/multi-level-marketing-businesses-and-pyramid-schemeshttps://www.huffpost.com/entry/job-opportunity-mlm-scam-pyramid-scheme_l_5e30c62ec5b6e8375f647a5eNeed more? Toxic Optimism & #Blessed
#blessed#livingyourbestlifeAlways find a silver lining!🤨 What do we do in situations where we aren't #blessed? Or where we've faced a senseless tragedy and there is no silver lining? Key topics:✔️ In 2015, Kate Bowler was diagnosed with Stage 4 cancer. This was after spending a chunk of her career researching the American prosperity gospel, the "#blessed" culture, and the "living my best life" crowd. So what happens when tragedy visits?✔️ In the same way that "love and light only," "only good vibes allowed" can become a prison of toxic positivity, rushing to find some silver lining in the face of grief can morph into toxic optimism. ✔️Using phrases like "well, at least..." or "I guess it's good that..." to someone who is grieving is not helpful. Even if well-intentioned, it usually doesn't help.Links I discuss in this episode:https://www.ted.com/talks/kate_bowler_everything_happens_for_a_reason_and_other_lies_i_ve_loved?language=enhttps://www.inc.com/geoffrey-james/how-to-avoid-toxic-optimism.htmlhttps://www.dailymail.co.uk/femail/article-10089201/Positivity-POISONOUS-says-author-KATE-BOWLER-provocative-new-book.htmlNeed more? Grief & Loss: How Do We Even Begin?
Trigger warning: In this episode, I will be discussing grief, loss, and bereavement as well as other potentially triggering topics (abuse, depression, suicide, etc.). If you feel that any of these topics could be overwhelming for you, please skip this episode.Key topics:✔️ There is more acceptance and open discussion now about mental health in general, as well as anxiety and depression. But what about grief? Grief/Loss still seems to be the hairy, unwieldy beast in the corner no one wants to discuss.✔️ By and large, we are not taught much about grief and the grieving process. Unless you have religious and/or cultural traditions around it, you may feel as though no one has ever told you what to expect. Or where to even begin. ✔️The "stages" of the grieving process are not linear and, for that matter, may not encompass the experience you have. Please do not listen to the Grief Police who want to tell you what you are and are not allowed to feel. 😡 It is YOUR journey and your experience. Happy (Almost) Halloween! 🎃
It's hard to believe that October is almost over. And Halloween/Samhain is Sunday! Key topics:✔️ Looking for something scary to watch? I can definitely make some suggestions. I always say I won't watch horror movies at bedtime and then 100% do it anyway. 🤷 ✔️ Modern films rely too much on cheap jump scares and loud noises for my money. It might be startling but it's not scary.✔️ However you choose to celebrate, I hope you have a safe and fun holiday!Special intro music: "Witchcraft" by Frank Sinatra.Special outro music: "That Old Black Magic" by Frank Sinatra.Need more? Episode 100! Special returning guest: Scott Grayson
The most downloaded guest episode to date featured Scott Grayson talking about cubicle zombie life. This topic is now even more germane than when we discussed it in June of 2020. 🤔 Key topics:✔️ Updates on what Scott's up to these days. Spoiler alert: a lot. ✔️ If you weren't ready last year but you are ready now to escape the cubicle zombie life... how do you do it?✔️ If you are Mike the Micromanager and you feel that you need a digital panopticon of surveillance to suss out who is working hard versus who is goofing off all day: you got bigger problems, man.✔️ Plan ahead. Think about your own future and what's best for you and your family. Corporate America will always take care of itself. Who's looking out for you? 99: How Do I Escape Social Media Dependence?
Episode 99! Hard to believe. Today I'll be answering some viewer mail from the last episode, i.e.: OK, the social media outage scared me. How can I not be so dependent on it?Key topics:✔️ I don't recommend going cold turkey, especially if a huge amount of your income is predicated on social media. Instead, create an exit strategy BEFORE you need it.✔️ This is not insane. Don't think for one second that your business could not survive without social media. Yes, even in 2021, this is true.✔️ Is your marketing plan based mostly or solely on spamming other people? Well, if so, plz find something else to do with your time. Sending out 500 LI InMails each day trying to pitch yourself is probably not the best way to make money. Ironically, it might also get you banned from the platform one day. ✔️ There are other ways to obtain positive reviews and testimonials without relying on star reviews through social media. If you're viewing social media as the only means for proof of concept, you'll stay stuck forever.Links to articles I discuss:https://www.broganmicallef.com/articles/quitting-social-media-guidehttp://www.alexandrafranzen.com/2021/01/30/marketing/Special intro music: "99" by Toto.Special outro music: "It Keeps You Runnin'" by Michael McDonald. The Social Media Outage
On Monday, Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Oculus went down. Was your business impacted by it? Did you hardly even notice? Key topics:✔️ As I've said repeatedly: the future is now. Censorship. Banning & shadow banning. Was the outage really caused by a network problem or was it something else? I dunno, but I do know that if you're still out there basing your entire income on a platform you don't own or control, you're playing with fire. ✔️ Do you have access to your own data? If you've been talking to JKTheButterfly82634 on social media and don't know her actual name and email address, how would you reach her again if that platform died?✔️ Nothing is too big or too popular to fail. Wu Wei, F Bucks & Your Business
Wu wei can be defined as "effortless action," which may seem like a contradiction to the American mind. Busy, busy, busy. Always on the grind. Never stop hustling. Yet what happens when we run out of F bucks in our daily F budget?Key topics:✔️ Too often we prioritize other people's agenda for our own time rather than asking the simple question: does this even matter?✔️ So Karen is mad that her apple cinnamon candle wasn't perfectly balanced but rather did not have enough apple scent to satisfy her. WHO CARES.✔️ We have a series of decisions to make before we even start work for the day. As time goes on, the brain gets weary. If you want to have gas left in the tank for family, friends, charity work, etc., you need to be mindful of your own F bucks and the overall F budget.✔️ I LOVE how Sarah calls social invitations and extroverted hoo-ha "impositions" because that is precisely what they are. If you want to go and you give an F buck for it, cool. But if you don't, the world will not end by saying, "No thank you."Special intro music: "Forget You" by CeeLo Green.Link to Sarah Knight's TED Talk: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GwRzjFQa_OgNeed more? I Did What I Had To... Now How Do I Get What I Want?
In this episode, I answer some viewer mail with a common problem we encounter as solopreneurs, freelancers, and small business owners: when I started out, I did whatever I had to do in order to succeed. Now how can I do what I want to do?Key topics:✔️ Jane recounts a story of someone who wanted her to FILM HERSELF working. Cuz that's not hella creepy or anything. 😲 ✔️ Sometimes we work with less than ideal clients to get that first burst of cash or a few positive testimonials. So how do we move from the less than ideal to the ideal?✔️ The level of micromanagement and nitpicking you will get is the level you are willing to tolerate. This is true across the board in any industry. ✔️ Constant monitoring may be some control freak manager's fantasy but you don't have to accept it in your own practice. Nor should you be perpetrating that on your own employees.Special intro & outro music "Jell-O" by Egozi. Be aware of that. ✔️ Most fad diets recommend food consumption below the threshold of the Minnesota Starvation Experiment! Don't believe me? No More Dieting: The Middle Path
In March, I recorded an episode called "No More Dieting... So Now What?" After reading Dr. Aamodt's book, Why Diets Make Us Fat, I wanted to figure out that million dollar question for myself. If I don't want to yo-yo diet and punish myself anymore, what do I do? Key topics:✔️ The Buddhist idea of the Middle Path is so useful here. Too much asceticism makes life dull and restrictive yet too much indulgence can make us feel sluggish and tired. ✔️ I focused on one habit at a time and truly worked on not doing too much too soon. Yes, progress is slower that way but it also tends to be long lasting. ✔️ Keeping a food journal can be very helpful. Sometimes we tend to graze mindlessly or eat little snacks that we brain-dump later. ✔️ Fake foods are usually highly processed and don't make me feel full for any significant length of time. Yes, they may be convenient but at what cost?✔️ Always talk to your doctor FIRST before you make any changes to your own eating habits and/or exercise routine. Don't get in a hurry and cause more harm than good.Need more? Email me: https://causeyconsultingllc.com/contact-causey/
