Christine Porath on Mastering Community: The Surprising Ways Coming Together Moves Us from Surviving to Thriving
Despite our deep desire to feel a sense of belonging, many of us feel isolated. The rise of technology and modern workplace practices have led people to be even more disconnected, even as we remain constantly contactable. In this episode, Dustin talks with Christine Porath about her latest book, Mastering Community: The Surprising Ways Coming Together Moves Us from Surviving to Thriving. Christine's research shows, “as our human interactions have decreased, so too have our happiness levels. This is sparking a crisis in mental health that will have repercussions for years, leaving people lonelier and organizations less productive and profitable, too.” Leaders, organizations, and managers of all stripes may recognize how to implement the cure: community and civility. Christine and I talk about the six characteristics of companies and leaders that best build community, how to unleash your people and embrace radical candor. We share a few great book recommendations, some wonderful case studies, examples and stories from Cisco, Marriott, The Motley Fool and even the world of improv comedy at Second City.   *** This episode is brought to you by Stax Payments, offering a FREE savings analysis for our listeners, where they will actually take your merchant statement with your current processor and show you where you are overpaying. Chris Bailey on How to Calm Your Mind: Finding Presence and Productivity in Anxious Times
In this episode, Dustin talks with Chris Bailey about his latest book, How to Calm Your Mind: Finding Presence and Productivity in Anxious Times. You'll discover How the analog and digital worlds affect calm and anxiety in vastly different ways. How our desire for the neurochemical dopamine eventually leads us to feel anxious and savor everyday experiences less. How the pursuit of productivity and accomplishment is more addictive than we think. How there are countless sources of hidden stress buried within our days. How conducting a “stimulation fast” can rebalance our mind to feel less anxious and calmer.  And how “busyness” is as much a state of mind as it is an actual state of life From battling work-life balance issues to developing a more expansive reservoir of energy, How to Calm Your Mind is full of tangible takeaways to overcome anxiety and live a fuller, more balanced life. Being calmer ultimately leads us to become more engaged, focused, and deliberate—while making us more productive and satisfied with our days and lives. Counterintuitive though it might sound, in an anxious world, investing in calm is not only a helpful strategy for self-care, it’s also one of the best productivity strategies around.   *** This episode is brought to you by Retainer Club, where orthodontists can focus on treatment, not retainers. Gabriella Braun on All That We Are: Uncovering the Hidden Truths Behind Our Behavior at Work
In this episode, Dustin talks with Gabriella Braun about her book, All That We Are: The Hidden Truths Behind Our Behavior at Work. We examine how work does far more than occupy our time and provide our livelihood. It provides an outlet for our intelligence and skills. It’s part of our identity, a source of belonging and exclusion, of pleasure and pain. Listeners will discover why the dynamics of different relationships in the workplace, giving rise to issues of power, status, equality, camaraderie and competition, touch every one of us and every part of us. Much as we may want to, we cannot leave aspects of ourselves outside the building or virtual space when we go to work. Gabriella explains what it means to work while being human and how we can learn more about the hidden motivations that drive our behavior at work. The book will move you and awaken a new respect for your colleagues and employees. It may force a rethink of many of the attitudes you hold about others, especially those who annoy or intimidate you at work. It can help you build a workplace that is more creative, inclusive and humane, where people and their work flourish.   *** This episode is brought to you by Freedom Founders, where orthodontists and dentists can create cash flow and secure wealth through passive real estate. Roger Martin on When More Is Not Better: Overcoming America's Obsession with Economic Efficiency
In this episode, Dustin talks with Roger Martin about his book, When More Is Not Better: Overcoming America's Obsession with Economic Efficiency. You'll discover how our obsession with economic efficiency has forced too much pressure in a pursuit of perfectionism. Roger and I discuss how this has resulted in a dangerously unbalanced economy that lacks resilience. Roger gives practical tips on what business executives, political leaders, educators and citizens can do to achieve the overall balance between efficiency and resilience. Roger says, "Efficiency itself is not the problem, it's the proxies we use for efficiency." Using proxies like quarterly earnings or cost reduction might show improved efficiency, but this is not the same as effectiveness. If you focus on the wrong proxies in the short term, you will do things that are damaging in the long run to achieving the best results, like providing excellent customer service or delivering long-term shareholder value.   *** This episode is brought to you by Market Hardware.
