This book is about everything!
To kick off our Evolution quarter, in this episode we discuss Bill Bryson's incredibly rich and thoroughly researched A Short History of Nearly Everything. While the author openly admits there's no way he can actually fit the history of our world and everything we know and have learned into 500 pages he does a pretty darn amazing job of covering a lot! With his easy breezy style (and often hilarious footnotes) he makes even the most complicated topics easier to digest. To give just a handful of topics he covers.... the evolution of continental drift, atomic structure, the shear size of the cosmos vs. the inconceivable tininess of the world of quantum physics, Earth's age, chemical and biological discoveries/disasters and of course many insightful background stories on revolutionary (and also lesser known) figures such as Newton, Einstein, Darwin, Halley, Marie Curie, Cavendish, Thomas Midgley, among many others. Basically... a must-read if you're looking for anything within the realm of science history (or generally a awesome book!) As we mention in the episode if you've lost touch with a friend or family member that you've always wanted to re-connect with again have a peak at our Get Back in Touch (GBT) Worksheet that may be a stepping stone to reaching out to that person... Finding Your Moon - Ep16
Anna-Marie McLemore's When the Moon Was Ours does a skillful job of exploring complex issues of gender, identity, culture and love while magically coating everything in world full of colour, spices, mystery and secrets. It's like an old fairy tale but with powerful real life themes that leave you enraptured with the characters and (at least for me) have you looking up actual cultural practices and beliefs. Although this was a solo episode for me I think I speak for both of us when I say this was an excellent read to close of our MAGIC quarter! Thanks for listening. p.s. This is where the magic happens - Ep14
Welcome to another episode of the book sisters! In this episode, we talk about Elizabeth Gilbert’s Big Magic. This was SUCH an inspiring book because it not only encourages solid creative action, Gilbert also shines light on a lot of stereotypical ways to think about the creative process and the artist persona. She breaks these seemingly old ways to think about creativity and replaces them with new ones, almost like a crusade of new thinking when it choosing a creative life. ---- Want us to read a specific book? The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe - Ep13
"Some journeys take us far from home. Some adventures lead us to our destiny.” -C.S. Lewis Welcome to the mystical and wondrous world of Narnia! Full of talking creatures, magical spells and even Santa Claus! Cinthia and I really enjoyed this book. It was definitely a magical ride especially since neither of us had the chance to read it when we were kids. We discuss our favorite themes and characters in the story, but admit we only scratched the surface. We realize there are lots of deeper themes and allegories sprinkled throughout the book, often theological in origin. We talk a bit about the interesting life of C.S. Lewis and what a wonderful imagination this man had. Also -stick around until the end since we have a fun little surprise we try out for the first time! We call it the Sister Pop Quiz ;) Please don't be shy to let us know what you think about our episode and if YOU have ever read this classic? Let us know if you loved it, hated it.. or somewhere in between. We also mention Goodreads at one point, so below are our personal Goodreads account: Please friend us on Goodreads - we'd love to share and discover more books! https://www.goodreads.com/karen https://www.goodreads.com/cinthia Want us to read a specific book? Daughters Rising Interview - Ep10
In this episode we were very lucky to sit down and talk with Katherine Fabrizio, author of Daughters Rising: rising above the hidden messages of shame, guilt, and self-doubt passed down from mother to daughter. We discuss the relationship between mother and daughter and the many deep unspoken messages passed down, often subconsciously. We talk about the power of shame and understanding some of the difficult emotions woven into the maternal relationship. Kathrine's book provides valuable questions that we can go, sit down with our mothers and ask her about... and hopefully give us both a change to better understand the limitations that might have been passed down and ingrained in the relationship early on. It is a wonderfully wise and witty book, and we hope all mom and daughters can read this and take in all the compassionate insight Kathrine has to give in areas we often feel frustrated in. We hope you enjoy it!

Sexuality & murder: from behind Carson’s eyes - Ep9
In this episode of the Book Sisters we discuss Carson McCuller's Reflections in a Golden Eye. This is a somewhat darker but vividly powerful novel that includes some of these themes which we talk about: homosexuality, loneliness, sickness, depression and sexuality. As you turn the pages of the book the disturbing and often obsessive interactions between characters continue to progress and eventually escalate to a unforeseen climax. We hope you enjoy it!

This episode on The Book Sisters was a bit of a special treat because we got to chat with the co-founders and food bloggers of Authentic Food Quest, Claire and Rosemary, about their recently published book: A Guide to Eat Your Way Authentically Through Argentina. We need to ask! : Learning to negotiate as a woman in workplace - Ep5
Today’s book discussion is on Linda Babcock and Sara Laschever’s Ask For It: how women can use the power of negotiation to get what they really want. We though how appropriate it was that National Equal Pay Day fell on April 12, 2016! This book discusses the challenges women face in negotiating for themselves primarily in the workplace but also their personal lives. Linda, a professor in Economics and Sara, a renowned writer and editor, have researched and interviewed women across the country for over 10 years and created this very practical, step by step guide in how woman can move forward in their careers, realize their value and not be scared to ask for things! They discuss the consequences and lost opportunities when we don’t ask, the emotions that arise and how to deal with them when negotiating, the statistics of male vs. female worker salaries, studies showing how women are treated differently than men even when they behave the same and a lot of different strategies you can use in your workplace to get what you want. So go ahead… ask for something. Today. Start small and don’t be scared to hear ‘no’. The idea is that if you’re not hearing no, you’re not asking enough.

Cross-race friendships from 3 different perspectives - Ep4
Today we talk about Kathryn Stockett’s first and wondrously written novel: The Help.  This may also be one of the first book in our podcast that Cinthia and I both equally loved and stayed up late on many nights reading. Although it was rejected many times before being published, The Help is an enthralling read seen through the eyes of 3 women in a small town Jackson, Mississippi during the 1960s. We both thought Stockett did an incredible job of spinning this elegant and beautifully intricate story line between these 3 characters. Some themes we discuss are racism, mother/daughter themes, human rights, love, as well as some irony/paradoxes found in certain characters. Hope you guys enjoy it as much as we did!

The Devil on your shoulder : Napoleon Hill's life wisdom - Ep3
n this episode we discuss the long withheld publication by Napoleon Hill: Outwitting the Devil: The Secret to Freedom and Success. Cinthia and I both agreed that this was an incredibly empowering read. Written over 70 years ago, Hill “interviews” the Devil and discusses the greatest obstacles we face to find happiness and success, to name a few: fear, love, procrastination, over-indulgence, anger. He also mentions others that were/still are controversial or well ahead of his time: education and church system,  cigarettes/liquor addiction, and how the mind forms habits and associations. It’s not “fireworks”, but it is definitely an insightful and profound read.

A glimpse in time : Stepping into H.G Well’s time machine - Ep2
This episode we talk about The Time Machine by H.G. Wells. I would say this is a gripping science fiction read with a lot of imaginative and futuristic ideas, given it was published in 1895! It is an excellent read that explores themes like ethics, evolution, and social injustice. I would say Wells’ vision of the future is shocking because it not only reflects his perceptive and quite marvelous imagination, but also how far ahead of his time he was.

How Orgasmic! : Elizabeth Lloyd’s profound questions about the Female Orgasm - Ep1
In this episode we discuss Elisabeth A. Lloyd’s The Case of the Female Orgasm: Bias in the Science of Evolution. Lloyd points out how all of the theories and arguments explaining the evolutionary function of the female orgasm up until now are inadequate. Instead, she proposes her own theory and explains some fascinating ideas on the subject.
