"24 billion animals are used in the US supplement industry every year"
Gelatin, Magnesium Stearate, Omega-3, Vitamin D3, Vitamin B12, Creatine, Collagen… the list goes on and on. More than half of supplements contain animal-derived ingredients – and companies are not required to disclose them. In fact, many US-based supplement brands use intentionally ambiguous wording, hiding the truth and misleading consumers on the origin of their ingredients. We’re shedding light on the animal cruelty and environmental damage that fuels a highly-profitable industry – because nobody else is. The United States dietary supplement industry kills an estimated 24 billion animals, while creating 1.8 billion plastic pill bottles of waste every year. As consumers, we have the power to spark change, so we’re petitioning the FDA to implement more transparent regulations, which would mandate companies to disclose if their supplements contain animal byproducts. We’re empowering fellow consumers so we can all make better, more informed decisions about what we’re purchasing and putting in our bodies. It’s as easy as signing your name. https://terraseedtransparentlabel.org/ This week I am joined by Maria Cebrian... "As an avid long-distance mountain runner, Maria’s love and connection with nature was no secret. This sense of love for nature and its animals drove Maria towards veganism, which opened her eyes to the injustices that our planet and its animals face daily. When Maria’s new vegan lifestyle started leaving some nutritional holes in her diet, she noticed a dip in her running performance. The last thing she wanted to do was compromise her vegan lifestyle, so she explored her options for supplements. To her surprise she couldn’t find a single sustainable multivitamin for vegans. At that moment, she knew that had to change. So, Maria co-founded Terraseed - the all-in-one multivitamin that supports vegans and our environment." https://terraseed.com/ Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. Jess Karwat, Vegan Women's Health Coach
Jess Karwat, Vegan women's health coach chats with me in this episode about her journey into veganism, toxic diet culture & how it has become entangled with 'plant based' social media culture & her view on finding vegan options around the world. From Jess' site: 'As a certified vegan nutritionist, fitness trainer, yoga instructor and reiki master & having worked with over 200+ clients at this point, I have mastered the exact tools and techniques to help women thrive, get fit, learn how their beautiful bodies work by syncing with their menstrual cycle, heal their relationship with food and reclaim their confidence. Before I started my career as an online coach, I had my own years of struggle. Not only did I have very bad hormonal acne all over my face, neck and back, I also had gut & digestive issues as well and I struggled with an eating disorder. I KNEW THAT GOING VEGAN WAS GOING TO HELP ME WITH SOME OF THE ISSUES, BUT DIGGING DEEPER WAS WHAT REALLY DID THE TRICK. I became a certified vegan nutritionist and fitness trainer and entered the world of fitness. Very quickly I realised that this world burnt me out, my hormonal imbalances got worse which in turn triggered my eating disorder. The entire time I would work completely against my body as I thought this was the only way to go. I would over exercise, under-eat, gain weight, feel bloated and I felt like I was stuck in a vicious cycle. I remember at one point my mom took a picture of me in a bikini at the beach in Barcelona and I didn’t recognise myself. I looked bloated and nothing like me. I felt lost. THE MOMENT I STARTED FOCUSING ON WORKING WITH MY BODY, HENCE WITH MY MENSTRUAL CYCLE AND FOCUSED ON HEALING FROM THE INSIDE OUT, THAT’S THE MOMENT EVERYTHING CHANGED FOR ME. Now after all of these years, endless research, self studies and certifications, I can finally say that I am looking the greatest I ever looked and I feel the best I have ever felt. I have fought my hormonal acne, my bloating and my eating disorder, I am feeling stronger than ever, physically and mentally and I finally feel in flow with my femininity and my menstrual cycle. On top of that, I know that our actions are positively impacting not only the environment and the animals of the world, but hundreds of women from all around the world. If you are reading this, see this is a sign from the universe.' The Plant-Based Crohn’s and Colitis Cookbook with Author Helena Murphy
Helena Murphy is a professional photographer and videographer based in Bristol, specialising in food and product photography. She is also a weekly staff writer for online photography magazine, Fstoppers. Helena is the co–founder of vegan sustainability magazine, Omnom, which was stocked at booksellers internationally, including Selfridges, Foyles, and The Tate Modern. For more information, visit: https://helenarosemurphy.net/crohns-and-colitis-cookbook Contact: Helena Murphy, author & photographer, helena.rose.murphy@gmail.com Entrepreneur and food photographer and Crohn’s sufferer, Helena Murphy, releases The Plant-Based Crohn’s and Colitis Cookbook in January 2023. This cookbook shares Murphy’s nutritious, easy-to-digest plant-based recipes created specifically for people suffering with Crohn’s and Colitis, based on her own experiences of living with and cooking for Crohn’s disease. The cookbook contains over 70 recipes that incorporate dishes designed for maximum nutrition and ease of digestion. In The Plant-Based Crohn’s and Colitis Cookbook, you’ll find: evidence-based research about plant-based diets in relation to IBD suggestions for how to diversify a plant-based diet a useful list of kitchen staples to buy in bulk customisable recipe ideas for breakfasts, dips, sauces, salads, soups, curries, mains and more involved weekend dishes flare-friendly recipes tagged, so that if you’re experiencing a bout of bad symptoms you can easily navigate to the recipes which are especially kind on your digestion. As a food and product photographer, Murphy has created a visually bold, dynamic and playful cookbook to contrast the drudgery and tedium of living with this disease. Her hope is to provide an inspiring go-to resource so that sufferers of IBD don’t have to wonder in frustration “what can I cook today?” “I created this cookbook to be the resource that I needed, as a vegan, when I was first diagnosed with Crohn’s disease. I had never heard of IBD when I received my diagnosis, and my IBD team focused largely on the medical aspect of treatment. I knew that I wanted to pursue a holistic approach to finding remission and that would include taking a close look at what I was eating,” says Murphy. “I really hope this cookbook can help give other people ideas and inspiration if they aren’t sure where to start with their diet after receiving a diagnosis. This cookbook is a culmination of the recipes I have tried during times of mild flare, severe flare, and remission. Because this disease is so personalised, I have really tried to encourage people to use the recipes as a jumping off point so they can adapt the ingredients to what their bodies will tolerate.” The Plant-Based Crohn’s and Colitis Cookbook goes on pre-sale for £17 on 1st December 2022 with the release on 3rd January 2023. It can be purchased on Amazon. This episode is brought to you by Bloody Vegans Productions. Finally a huge THANK YOU to Patreon supporter Little Pigeon Bird Sanctuary . Vegandale CEO & Founder, Hellenic Vincent De Paul
Born in Sri Lanka, Hellenic and his family fled the war when he was 3 years of age, subsequently landing in Canada as refugees. Always an animal lover, he (along with his vegan wife and children) care for 14 animals both indoors and outdoors, including racoons, opossums, and squirrels.  Hellenic credits his entrepreneurial spirit and ambition to his parents, who he watched run a successful furniture store. Early in his career, he gained a tremendous amount of professional event experience through the production of over 200 events (featuring notable artists like DJ Khaled, LeBron James, and French Mon-tana). Launching Vegandale was the next natural step in his career and mission. Today, Hellenic leads a diverse team of 15 professionals, many of which left cushy jobs at major corporations - a testament to his vision and leadership capabilities. “I’m an abolitionist vegan in that I believe we have a moral imperative to end animal exploitation entirely, full-stop. Most people find it unacceptable to advocate for a day or month to denounce racism, bullying or other injustices. Every day should be vegan.” You can find out more about VEGANDALE at https://www.vegandalefest.com/ This episode is brought to you by Bloody Vegans Productions. Georgie Purcell & the Animal Justice Party
Georgie Purcell is the Animal Justice Party candidate for Northern Victoria in the upcoming state election. She is a passionate animal protection advocate living in the beautiful Macedon Ranges on Dja Dja Wurrung, Taungurung and Wurundjeri Country. Georgie has spent her adult life working on causes she feels mostly passionately about – animal protection, unionism and ensuring a secure and dignified retirement for working people. For the past 4 years, she has been proud and honoured to work as Chief of Staff to Victoria’s first Animal Justice Party MP – playing a key role in achieving legislative reform to better the lives of animals. But after entering a political role at just 26 years old – she has noticed the way young people, particularly young women, are not represented in our halls of power. Georgie wants to change that. Georgie has been involved in the animal protection movement for 11 years – volunteering on campaigns to end puppy farming, ban jumps racing and stop duck shooting. Georgie has a double degree in law and communications/politics. She is admitted as an Australian lawyer, and is a graduate of the Pathway to Politics Program for Women and Centre for Australian Progress. In her spare time, she loves to hang out with her 17 sheep, donkey, 3 horses, 4 ex-puppy farm dogs and 4 cats. World record holding athlete & activist Kate Strong
On Sunday 11 September 2022, Kate and partner Kieren Windsor will leave bigmoose café in Cardiff and cycle anticlockwise around the circumference of Wales. The couple will be relying on the hospitality of strangers as they complete this tour. Using bamboo, a renewable and carbon-effective product, for the bikes they have filed down themselves from six individual pieces, they hope companies and individuals will realise that we can change to a more sustainable way of living without compromising performance or activities. They’re inviting cyclists to join them on the last section of their tour. The leg starts at 10am in Swansea on Saturday 9th July and they will pass through Cowbridge, Cardiff Bay (where cyclists can also join the leg) and finish at BigMoose cafe. Kate, 43, only started training for athletic success in her early 30s following a relationship breakdown that forced her to re-evaluate her life and focus on her passions. Within two years she was crowned world champion in long-distance triathlon in 2014 and subsequently broke 3 world records in static cycling in 2021. Kieren, 49, has never participated in any solo sports and only recently took up cycling. In addition to the Tour de Wales, on 5th June 2023 (World Environment Day), Kate Strong will embark on a 3-month cycle challenge covering over 3,000 miles cycle challenge around the circumference of England, Scotland and Wales. She will be cycling in the “red zone”, areas that are highly likely to be affected by sea level changes directly due to climate change. During Challenge 3000, Kate will stop at 30 official locations and plant over 3,000 trees. She will also give talks and host workshops about sustainability and the simple changes we can make to mitigate the effects of climate change. Kate says “Through Challenge 3000, I want to connect communities to nature and to each other. We all are being impacted by the climate crisis and my intention is to inspire people to work together and create a radical solution.” If you’d like to donate to Bigmoose Charity, please visit the Just Giving page: https://www.justgiving.com/tourdewales2022 For more information about Kate Strong and the upcoming adventures please visit https://katestrong.global/adventuresl Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
