Robots taking over the world.
This episode is basically about robots, people, the planet and money. It's like an audible Venn Diagram of Utopia vs. Dystopia.
1. The future of the music industry: VR concerts
2. If you want to learn more about Tim Ferriss and his work and you can stomach listening to white dudes talk like white dudes, I’d highly recommend his Podcast, the Tim Ferriss Show. He interviews the best of the best in all fields and it’s highly informative and entertaining. I’ll admit it can get a bit ego/douchey sometimes, possibly because his audience is largely male, but his heart is totally in the right place and he is a big advocate for some of our favourite things like not working so much and taking magic mushrooms.
3. Some stats on theft at self check-outs. By the way, I am only ironically endorsing scamming big corporations… I realize there are deeper issues at hand beyond simply saving a few dollars and that stealing is not cool. Personally, I am still karmically recovering from some past minor kleptomania tendencies, and I can attest that if you don’t get punished directly, the universe will make up for it.
4, 5. Couldn’t find a specific statistic on applications for electrician apprenticeships over the past 10 years, but came across some interesting articles and charts. There is a noticeable decrease in overall apprenticeship enrollment from 2003-2013 due to the construction industry falling, recession and a number of other factors.
6. One study (which you can pay to download, because apparently knowledge ain't free, y'all) highlights an interesting correlation between job security and drug/opioid use as being a major issue perceived by apprenticeship program representatives that may affect enrollment in the coming years… Maybe they’ve been listening to too much Tim Ferriss and not feeling as inclined to work on the machine.
(On a positive note, if you’re femme identifying, minority, POC, PWD, veteran or landed immigrant, your chances of being accepted into an apprenticeship are stacked in your favour!)
7. Yes, you can 3D print a house
8. A good Guardian article about Keynes and his 15 hour work week prediction. If you wanna learn more about him, seriously just Google it yourself.
9. This is a fascinating outline of the history, socioeconomic structure and colonization of the (lit AF) Jiu’hoansi tribespeople of Southern Africa. These folks knew what was up. The original affluent society, founded on the idea of fierce egalitarianism... so like, you'd better share your stuff because stuff is really annoying to have to take care of by yourself
10, 11, 12. Universal Basic Income is the future! (pretty please?)
Here’s an outline of the Mincome (WHICH IS PRONOUNCED MIN-COME, NOT MINI-COME. BIG CAN’T READ, GIVE HER A BREAK) experiment in Manitoba in the 70s. Also the lovely lady who took her husband to the Keg
