AFL 10: Demystifying Deloading with Dr. Chance Martin, PT
Are the words "deloading" or "rest day" like curse words in your vocabulary? "I can't take a rest day because I will start to lose my gains!" Does this sound familiar to you? This episode demystifies the negative connotations behind these particular words and phrases. And Dr. Chance Martin, PT is going to take us through how periods of de-loading can actually be beneficial for improving overall performance. We walk through the stimulus, recovery, adaptation (SRA) cycle and how the body actually responds during each of these periods of training. Some notable quotes: "Fitness is like an arc with sickness on one end and elite level fitness on the other end." "I see athletes who are wanting to be at that elite level, working out as hard as they can 4 to 5 times a day, and it just isn't sustainable." "Athletes are missing the R in the SRA cycle." "Our body has a finite amount of resources. If you don't allow it to truly recover, you are never going to find those gains that you are trying to reach." "We are supposed to be doing stuff inside the gym, so we can enjoy our life outside the gym." "You are not going to get extremely weak and lose all your gains if you take a little time off from the gym." AFL 5: Benefits of Being Barefoot with Nick St. Louis, PT
Nick St. Louis, PT is a self-proclaimed "foot nerd." He loves talking about the human foot and how it affects the rest of the body! In this episode, we talk about the somewhat polarizing topic of barefoot/minimal style footwear. But truthfully, we are just talking about taking care of the feet so that you avoid injuries to the feet or the rest of the body. Nick believes the feet act to the body as the foundation does to an architectural structure. If the foundation lacks integrity, then the structure it sits on will break down. Same with the human body. Dysfunctional feet will lead to injuries all the way up the kinetic chain. So listen in! I promise you won't regret it.
