Ep 033. Douglas Wilson - Pastor, Writer, Poet, Musician and Empty Art
The summer series comes to a close in the Interviews with the Artists. In the series Cody Anderson has interviewed a wide range of popular and not so popular artists in their fields. Some of these interviews cover music, writing, design, computer animation, satire, novels, home-made music videos, orchestras, Biblical historical fiction, and more. Be sure to listen back if you haven't heard them all and let us know what you think...! This finale episode we welcome Pastor, author, poet, musician, blogger, and debater Pastor Douglas Wilson. Pastor Wilson is the pastor of Christ Church in Moscow Idaho. His books have been largely influential in early episodes of our podcast and have helped up understand and interpret art and art culture in the world around us.  In this episode we get to know Pastor Wilson and his many fields of the arts he participates in. We talk about how long it took for him to get his first book published even though in the 6th grade he knew he "wanted to make books." There was a lot of history covered in our conversation.  As we talk about the art we hit on a couple of his writings. First the book Angels in the Architecture. What inspired the writing, what it was about, and how we can go back to a medieval mindset in not only our lives but in our understanding of the arts.  The second was an article Pastor Wilson wrote for Chronicles Magazine titled Game of Bones. In this he wrote about the empty art of Games of Thrones and other arts that are similar. They lack some key things to make it good art. We talked in depth about that idea, what makes it good art or empty art. Join us as we talk about art and art culture in this interview with the artist finale.... The summer series is called Interviews with the Artists. In the series Cody Anderson interviews a wide range of popular and not so popular artists in their fields. He lives in Hawaii and has been in the pastorate there for some years now and is in the process of moving to Minnesota to join Bethlehem as a professor. In the episode we talk about his background as a writer, his influences in the culture that is in Hawaii, and his book The Whole Message of the Bible in 16 Words (The Whole Story of the Bible in 16 Verses) by Crossway We talk about the challenges to a writer to take such a large thing like the Bible and condense it into just 16 thoughts or phrases. We talk about how all artists are really challenged in their work to take large concepts and ideas and pull it onto a field that the viewer can relate to and understand. We again bring up this reoccurring idea that as artists we try to make sense of the world around us and more specifically we try to make order from chaos, an idea that seems to be backwards into days mainstream arts.  Join us as we talk about art and art culture in Hawaii and how we as artist need to know what niche and people group our art is aimed at and then produce art in that vein very well... Ep 033.7 Micheal Minkoff - Poetry, Music, Lyrics, and the Church
The summer series is called Interviews with the Artists. In the series Cody Anderson interviews a wide range of popular and not so popular artists in their fields. Some of these interviews cover music, writing, design, computer animation, satire, novels, home-made music videos, orchestras, Biblical historical fiction, and more...! This episode we welcome Michael Minkoff from the Nehemiah Foundation and Renew the Arts. Michael is a multi-instrumental musician, a writer, a lyricist, and author, but primarily a poet. You could say he is the jack of all trades, artist of many, and master of none. This episode is packed full of great information and perspective of the arts as a whole and more specifically in the church. There weren't may questions asked because Micheal just walked right through the questions I had and nailed it down pretty good.  Listen in as he talks about his art, how he got into it and how he came to the point of starting a foundation just for Christian artists who need to be heard. His heart and desire behind the Nehemiah Foundation is awesome. He knows where the culture lays in its view of the arts that come from Christendom and how Christian artists are being treated by the church and not supported.  We talk about how the church fails, failed, and is failing to notice its talented and called artist and how they won't help them until they are listened to or making money. The church doesn't take are seriously. Art is seen as either a luxury that isn't necessary or as a commodity. But it is far more than that, it is communication. We see this in the Bible as God communicated His Word to us in the form of art through many artists. Art is central to the Gospel and it can be used for good and bad. We, as Christians and Christian artists need to support and get behind the artist in our local congregations and stop supporting a secularized art world in the culture at large around us. If we want good Christian art we are going to have to stand up and pay for it... And you can do that through Micheal's foundation using the links below! Micheal's Top recommendations: 1. How would a church building do that? Matt expounds, and really only scratches the surface, of the history of architecture in church buildings, going all the way back to pre-renaissance and the gothic era and then bringing it up today.  What designs we see in those old buildings today compared to the "mega-church" style building today is vary different and thats because the built environment will shape and reflect the culture and beliefs in that culture about God.Listen in as we get a little deeper into the building around us and how design speaks to us... EP 033.5 Isaac Adams - Spoken Word, Writer, Poet, Pastor
This episode we welcome an artist who is a staff writer for Humble Beast, a Spoken Word Poet, and Pastoral Assistant at Capitol Hill Baptist Church, Isaac Adams. Heard Isaac speak at TGC 17 this year when he did a spoken word piece for MLK50, a conference on the 50th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr. assassination. In this interview we talk about Isaac and his art of writing and spoken word poetry and how that started in high school with writing love songs for crushes and how God intervened and redeemed his abilities as a lyricist for His Glory.  We talk about his writing for Humble Beast and the three areas in which he aims his writing: The Local Church and how its indispensable, Race and understanding of the way things are seen, and The Arts and letting art be what it is. We talk about how these things impact his art, his preaching and teaching, and his writing.  As we talk about art we get into how art is a type of thievery and how we need to take art and make it our own in that idea. How good art seems to always have a protagonist and an antagonist. How Christian art doesn't have to explicitly mention God or the Gospel to be good art and more. Good art can be hard to find but it rewards your efforts. The world needs poetry because the world needs to slow down. Christian art tends to be schlawcky art or lazy art. These are some more topics we hit as we talk about art and art cultures.  We also talk about Star Wars and what makes it so great even though its a non-christian find industry and George Lucas didn't intend for it to be a Christian piece. We, as Christians, can take good art made by the world and redeem the Gospel centric areas of that art and use it for our benefit and God's Glory. Join us as we talk about these things and more... Isaac Adams' top recommendations and musts: 1. Christians Pray for your art 2. Have friends audit your art 3. Get a survey or review of you art annually from people you know 4. Ep 033.4 Dan & Ning Gelok - Music (Saxophone, Violin, Piano)
In this episode Cody interviews Dan and Ning Gelok from Texas. Dan is a professor of saxophone at the University of Houston where he teaches well... uh...saxophone. Ning is an accomplished violinist and pianist who homeschool their kids, teaches some on the side and plays gigs occasionally. In this episode we get to know the Geloks a bit and hear about their particular field as musicians. We talk about popularity and pride that can come from being very accomplished and well known musicians and how a Christian worldview can help regulate and temper those feelings that com natural to all of us.  We get into the art in Christendom and how often the music and other arts, produced by the Christian culture is often watered down, made for a wide audience to consume, and made to make a lot of money. This mindset causes it to be shallow and lack really any good doctrine. Its all happy style music that leads to a massive crescendo that isn't all that true and realistic. We talk about the style of music that the Gelok's play and produce and that with it being a new age or new classical style, it can be controversial because of the stretching that it causes in the music industry. Its not your everyday Mozart or Bach, its not traditional so it causes controversies for the listener in that they have to learn a new thing or a new way to appreciate it. They have to pick up a different lens to look through.   The Gelok's Top recommendations: 1. Listen to live Music 2. Know the roots/history of your genre in the arts 3. Ep 032.5 What is art Series - Art is ...
This is the final episode in the What is Art Series and it is also Roy's farewell episode. Roy will be heading off to basic for the National Guard this week and will return in the fall. Please pray for him and his family during this time as they will be traveling a lot and training for his new position. And don't forget to support Roy and his family by joining him on his support page for his art through the link below! In this episode we summarize what art is in a 3 part description in this way - Art is 1) intelligent communication that 2) functions by association or metaphor and is 3) necessarily incarnational. In this episode the guy take this description and exegete it you could say. They work through each point and explain how and why they think this is an apt description for art now. Many times art is relative and subjective but often it can have a solid and concrete meaning, and that is what they try to do in this episode. They talk about an untitled painting by Donald Judd who was an American artist associated with minimalism. In his work, Judd sought autonomy and clarity for the constructed object and the space created by it, ultimately achieving a rigorously democratic presentation without compositional hierarchy. In talking about this painting Cody quickly associates it to himself because of the clothes he wears to work on a daily basis. Roy points out that this is what we do when we view art, there is some sort of associating that we do, it communicates to us in the associational or metaphorical way of something incarnations.  Outro Music: “Always Ready, Always There”   Don't Forget to Support Roy's Artwork, Get some free Gaffers Tape and get a New book from Theology Mix here: Roy Uptain's Art FREE Sample Roll of Gaffers Tape These Sheep Bite   ***Please Share us with your friends on any social media platform so*** more people can hear how to think critically about what they consume with their minds, ears, and eyes!     ***Please give us a rating and review on iTunes!*** Join the Art of Redemption Facebook Group Check us out on Instagram Tweet towards us on Twitter Find us, other podcasts, and blogs in The Theology Mix Network  and email us with feed back or suggestions: aorfeedback@gmail.com   Tags: art, association, communication, donald, drawing, farewell,  final, goodbye, guard, incarnate, incarnation, intelligence, intelligent, judd, line, metaphor, minimalism, national, orange, painting, red, relation, solo, words, worldview

Ep 032.4 What is Art Series - Art is Relationship
As we continue in the What is Art series we talk this week about art being Relationship. How and what is art in a relationship with? When art is placed into a museum and gallery it is now art because of its relationship with its location. The way art is determined to be art is through something called Artworld Theory, a term and idea that came about through the theorizing of Arthur Donto. He has said that "the artworld as the provider of an operational theory of art that participants use to distinguish art from non-art." So the idea of where that art is placed and how its recognized in relationship to the culture determines if its actually art or not.  So does that mean if your creative work is not in a gallery its not art? We say nah-nah! God has made us all as artists, we are all creative, and we are all modeling to some degree God's creative power in our lives that isn't dependent on relationship to its surrounding our culture. We are to create because we were created in God's creative image, Imago Dei. We talk about two pieces of art the first by Robert Rauschenberg titled Bed and the Second we added again Any Warhol's Brillo Box. As we look at these two pieces and talk about what they mean and how they are so innovative we also play a game and try to sell them to each other, something Cody is not a huge fan of. These pieces are steps in a direction and how they are in relationship to reality, tangible life pieces, and abstract expressionism.    Outro Music: Handlebars by Flobots   Don't Forget to Support Roy's Artwork, Get some free Gaffers Tape and get a New book from Theology Mix here: Roy Uptain's Art FREE Sample Roll of Gaffers Tape These Sheep Bite Ordinary Pastor Facebook  and Podcast Grace Alone Colorado Conference    ***Please Share us with your friends on any social media platform so*** more people can hear how to think critically about what they consume with their minds, ears, and eyes!     ***Please give us a rating and review on iTunes!*** Join the Art of Redemption Facebook Group Check us out on Instagram Tweet towards us on Twitter Find us, other podcasts, and blogs in The Theology Mix Network  and email us with feed back or suggestions: aorfeedback@gmail.com   Tags: abstract, and, andy, art, arthur, artworld, balloons, bed, box, brillo, carts, cereal, charms, creative, danto, dickie, disc, duchamp, expressionism, frisbee, george, gods, golf, image, lucky, magic, marcel, marshmallow, rauschenberg, relationship, robert, stars, theory, warhol, water, world

Ep 032.3 What is Art Series - Art is Worship
In another episode of the What is art series Cody and Roy talk about art being worship. There is a worldview among some artist called Aesthetic Sense Theory and in this worldview they take art for sole the aesthetic elements, chopping out anything and everything else. Clive Bell, an aesthetic sense theorist, even goes as far as to say "art is the way in which we know ultimate truth." This is a dangerous and erroneous theory and worldview. It takes what was created and gifted to man and raises it to a place of God, therefore making it an idol, a thing to cause worship. This theory leads to aesthetic exaltation and the art piece itself causing the viewer to worship it. It takes everything away except emotion and that is what we are to ride on. This is a crazy place to try and live from.  There were other people in this group of theorists and that had a gang called the Bloomsburry Group. In this group you have people like Clive Bell, Roger Fry, Virginia Woolf and others. These people fed off one another thoughts and only caused their theory to become stronger.  We talk about this and the danger and sadness that this type of worldview brings and how empty and devoid of any hope it is...   Outro Music: Lights On by Trip Lee   Don't Forget to Support Roy's Artwork, Get some free Gaffers Tape and get a New book from Theology Mix here: Roy Uptain's Art FREE Sample Roll of Gaffers Tape These Sheep Bite   ***Please Share us with your friends on any social media platform so*** more people can hear how to think critically about what they consume with their minds, ears, and eyes!     ***Please give us a rating and review on iTunes!*** Join the Art of Redemption Facebook Group Check us out on Instagram Tweet towards us on Twitter Find us, other podcasts, and blogs in The Theology Mix Network  and email us with feed back or suggestions: aorfeedback@gmail.com   Tags: aesthetic, aesthetics, art, bell, boat, bolo, clive, color, creativity, depravity, eastern, edward, emotional, emotionalism, ewok, for, fry, gun, guns, idol, idolatry, lines, midwest, movement, physiological, practical, roger, safe, sea, sense, star, theory, truth, ultimate, virginia, wars, western, wolff, worship

Episode 032.2 What is Art Series - Art is Communication
The guys start off this episode by talking to Cody about the Gospel Coalition Conference he and Daniel attended. He gives an update on the conference an some of the workshops and people he met and attended. He tells a story about their AirBnb house key that was lost and going through a process to get a new one made. As they get into the meat of the episode that continue the series on What is Art. As they talk about the pieces in the episode today that bring to the forefront that art is more than just a man sitting infant of a canvas being creative and painting a cool picture. Art is a form and medium of communication. What does it communicate? In the pieces they examine today, taken from the walls of the Arena Chapel in Italy, they show that art often did not portray an accurate picture of the subject, but rather, portrayed the ideal of that particular person or position.  They dig into a close up of one of the panels from the chapel and talk about the assumed people based on knowledge and understanding of art. There are recognizable people even if you don't know who they are you can know how they are. Having some knowledge of art and history can give any person the ability to interpret a piece of art and look past the surface of the painting and read it like it was intended to be. Art speaks, art is a story without words, art is communication...   Outro Music: U Don't Know Me Like That by FM Static   Don't Forget to Support Roy's Artwork, Get some free Gaffers Tape and get a New book from Theology Mix here: Roy Uptain's Art FREE Sample Roll of Gaffers Tape These Sheep Bite   ***Please Share us with your friends on any social media platform so*** more people can hear how to think critically about what they consume with their minds, ears, and eyes!     ***Please give us a rating and review on iTunes!*** Join the Art of Redemption Facebook Group Check us out on Instagram Tweet towards us on Twitter Find us, other podcasts, and blogs in The Theology Mix Network  and email us with feed back or suggestions: aorfeedback@gmail.com   Tags: forms, art, communication, platonism, neo-platonism, heaven, jesus, tgc17, gospel, coalition, tony, rink, jackie, hill, perry, airbnb, lost, key, chapel, painting, visual, bible, arena, italy, appreciation, value, craft, art,
