Hannah Payne, 21, faces a charge of murder without malice. Channel 2’s Tom Jones was in the Clayton County courtroom when Payne appeared with her attorney, who said the woman exercised self-defense. Content Continues Below Payne had a pained look on her face when she heard about the charge. Police said Payne noticed 62-year-old Kenneth Herring hit a car and leave the scene Tuesday evening. Officers said Payne caught up with Herring at Riverdale Road and Forest Parkway and blocked him in with her car. “It just seems like an unfortunate situation of a good Samaritan trying to stop a person on a hit-and-run,” attorney Matt Tucker said. Payne's attorney told Jones that Herring also hit Payne's car. Tucker said she went to Herring's car with her gun to keep him from leaving again; however, police don't see it completely that way. “An altercation then ensued between the two of them, and during the altercation Mr. Herring was shot and killed,” Maj. Anthony Thuman said. Witness Nicole Jackson said she saw Payne fighting with Herring, telling him to get out of the car. “All of a sudden you hear a ‘pow,’ and she got on her phone immediately and was like, ‘He pulled the trigger,’” Jackson said. Police said Payne had called 911 before the shooting. Herring's estranged wife said Payne should have waited for officers. “Why would you get out? That means you weren't in no danger if you got out of your car to go to his car,” Christine Herring said. She said Payne is a danger to the community. “I think she needs to go to jail because she committed murder. You need to go to jail,” Herring said. Payne's attorney said she is licensed to carry. South Africa hit by deadly Easter church collapse At least 13 people have died and many were injured when a wall collapsed in South Africa at the start of an Easter service at a Pentecostal church. Emergency services said that 29 people were rushed to hospital after the collapse in the coastal province of KwaZulu-Natal. Local officials have blamed the tragedy on heavy rainfall in the area around eMpangeni on Thursday night. Most of the victims were reportedly women sleeping in the church. An 11-year-old girl is thought to be among them. The wall at the front of the Pentecostal Holiness Church collapsed at the start of what had been planned as a weekend-long service to commemorate the Christian festival of Easter. The fires began on March 26 in Louisiana's St. Landry Parish, a rural community north of Lafayette. Officials have not determined the cause of the fires, but have said they are unable to rule out the possibility of arson or that the three incidents were all related. "There is clearly something happening in this community," State Fire Marshal H. Browning said in a statement on Thursday. "That is why it is imperative that the citizens of this community be part of our effort to figure out what it is." The fires caused extensive damage to the Mount Pleasant Baptist Church and the Greater Union Baptist Church in the city of Opelousas, and the St. Mary Baptist Church in Port Barre. No deaths or injuries have been reported in either of the fires. Separately, officials say a fourth fire was "intentionally set" on March 31 at the Vivian United Pentecostal Church, a predominately white church roughly three hours north in Caddo Parish. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is now investigating the fires, as is the FBI. So far officials have not connected the four fires, identified a suspect or determined a motive.

Man Who Beat Woman " A brutal assault over parking in Deep Ellum caught on-camera lead to the arrest of a bartender named Austin Shuffield. Witnesses watched in horror as Shuffield attacked the 24-year-old victim Wednesday night. The victim – who CBS 11 News is not identifying – said she went to the hospital Thursday evening for treatment of what she believed is a ruptured eardrum. She said she pulled into a parking lot near Elm and Crowdus Streets when she blocked Shuffield in as he was trying to leave. That’s when Shuffield, 30, got out of his truck to ask her to move out of his way because she was blocking the parking lot exit. When he approached, a dispute followed, which witnesses saw and recorded. The video shows Shuffield and the victim in the heated argument. At one point, Shuffield pulls out what appears to be a gun and holds it behind his back. After more words are exchanged, he smacks the woman’s cell phone out of her hand as she was dialing 911. She reacts by punching him. Shuffield responds by reaching back, taking a boxer’s stance and punching her squarely in the jaw. The video shows Shuffield then hitting her violently four more times in the face and head. The woman was crouched over, cradling her head as Shuffield beat her. Shuffield then kicks her cell phone violently on the ground. Police were called an arrested Shuffield for aggravated assault causing injury, interference with an emergency call and public intoxication. Owner of the High and Tight Barbershop and Speakeasy, Braxton Martin said Shuffield worked there as a bartender but was fired Thursday afternoon. “From the video itself it shows an aggravated assault to our eyes. That is something needs to be dealt with quickly and swiftly and that’s what we’re trying to do and make sure it’s handled properly,” said Martin. Other Deep Ellum businesses owners said Shuffield’s behavior — especially from someone who works there — is the last thing the neighborhood needs or wants. Shuffield was booked into the Dallas County Jail but posted bail overnight.
