18. Reuben on the utopian world of UBI and the future of AI
Summary: Reuben shared his analysis on the career paths on the future of chicken rice hawkers. Old hawkers can consider taking on more people-oriented jobs while young hawkers can join the AI hype. Reuben hopes that AI will make life better for mankind. AI singularity can help mankind move past the point of scarcity. The deepening of AI might enable a future of science fiction. The workload has changed from 7 days to 6 days to 5 days and now moving to 4 days work week. One of the beauties of AI is to enable people to choose to exercise creativity and innovation instead of people having to work. If the government gives UBI like VC giving checks to founders, the society might have more Elon Musks and Bill Gates creating more value and writing off all those who choose not to work. Reuben further expounded his views on the beautiful future of AI and the possible need for UBI, universal benefit income. 15. John Ang on Biz guys learning tech and Digital Career
Summary John believes that it’s easier to train a business guy, to learn a no-code or a low-code product to do AI automation than it is easier to hire a software engineer or AI engineer to learn the business. The easier path for the chicken rice hawker is the non-coder path where he goes to become a people manager. John liked to read fiction when it comes to digital transformation. So there are a lot of very interesting sci-fi authors that write about what the world might look like in 5 years or 10 years. So for those of you who are interested in coding, this would be really relevant. I think my favorite app today is actually Google's collaboratory. John thinks the most important thing is to stay where you are passionate. Don't just go to learn to code just because people are saying you should but you have no interest in it at all. 9 Jayarethanam Pillai on the 3 advantages of digital transformation
Podcast with Jaya Part 2 Jaya mentioned that managers and leaders develop a greater sense of mental health stress generated by pandemics and transition use of remote work strategies. Despite that, companies and organizations should adopt continuous digital transformation because of the following 3 advantages which are security enhancement, gaining customer advantage over others, and developing the agility advantage. The way to build a case for digital transformation can be to develop a cost-benefit analysis for a specific scope of work. One of the quick wins to do that is to focus on improving operational efficiency using digital transformation. 7 Damien Cummings on talent management and career tips
Podcast with Damien Part 4: Damien shared with us that most managers should look at developing their people in AI and managing the change of AI but they don’t. That’s because most managers are terrible managers. As such, Andrew proposed that companies need to do a bit of mixed sourcing of different talents in different arrangements to enable digital transformation. One of the key skills or traits in a manager whether in-house or introduced is the fire to light up the organization: ignite that passion and fan it persistently. This is different from getting burnout from unrealistic expectations of getting fast success. Damien shared that some leaders want to be seen as the agent of change while others want more bonuses. These 2 sets of motivation can propel unrealistic expectations of achieving success. He was akin that to a Billboard story in which the marketing executives invest marketing dollars on billboards so that their C-suite executives can see them, thinking that they have done their job. Damien shares 6 resources that he goes to and his common apps are WhatsApp, teams, and slack. His 3 career tips are to get acquired knowledge be it learning a master's degree or learning by doing a side project, follow up with thought leaders and keep networking. 6 Damien Cummings on AI on the Future of Work
Podcast with Damien Part 3: Damien mentioned that AI is going to enable significant changes in the way jobs are being looked at. He referred to the previously mentioned Coca-cola story. He believed that the best leaders are the one that is going to be more empathetic. These leaders want to develop their people rather than hire and fire. Companies are going to develop the internal center of excellence around AI. However, Andrew pointed out that there is a practical aspect of developing people’s skills. He asked about how do companies assess their returns in developing skills in their people. He gives the chicken rice hawker example and asked Damien how long does it take for the chicken rice hawker to be a coder? How long does it take for the chicken rice hawker to be a people manager to enable change management? Damien acknowledged that there has not been a definite way to assess that at the moment and a lot of leaders are making those decisions based on trust and their gut feel. However, he believed that by-laws of a large number, if a company reskill 10,000 people, there will be some workers/employees/talents that will eventually be reskilled and redeployed. Hence he mentioned that it is key to note that leaders will eventually find themselves transforming the company at 2 speeds. The first speed is the rate at which companies bring in a team of external experts/consultants/gigsters on AI, digital transformation, and change management. They come in to set the stage and get some early wins to prove the case for digital transformation, so that people in the organization can change their mindset and behavior and that new culture becomes part of the company’s DNA. The second speed is the rate at which the business leaders develop the skills of their people and grow the capabilities that these experts help them set up. 4 Damien Cummings on Covid'19 and digital transformation
Podcast with Damien Part 1: Damien shared with us that Covid’19 accelerated digital transformation. The first wave of digital transformation generates new working habits such as allowing people to work remotely. Not everyone benefits. Technology created a paradox in that it allows people to be closer to working via a medium but it also created distance in their interpersonal relationships between co-workers. Digital transformation cannot happen effectively partly because the C-suites are lacking new skills especially in the technology side of things. Other times, some leaders lack empathy. Purpose enables people to kickstart digital transformation.
