Episode 012: Why The Caged Bird Sings
The Leventhal family ghosts show up at Cassandra’s fancy cocktail party. Karen, unwittingly, makes contact with ‘the other side’. The problems of hip-hop discussed; Karen advances an evolutionary theory. Ideas Advanced The problems of hip-hop: Vox Populi How our personal attitudes can spark a shift in hip-hop culture from ‘me-first’ to a new paradigm The Ageless Vegan The degenerative effects of meat consumption Referenced/Mentioned in this episode Why The Caged Bird Sings Delusions of grandeur Learned behavior Swarovski YouTube Veganism Obesity Clogged Arteries Diabetes “In Karen’s opinion, people intoxicated to that level of self-absorption were beyond help. Being considerate of others was learned behavior, but people rarely took it upon themselves to learn new behaviors unless there was a potential benefit that would foreseeably be received. A change in perspective that inspired sharing the spotlight and hyping each other (instead of the crowd) seemed unlikely within an entire culture that promoted showboating instead of teamwork, giving birth to a caucus of audacious, self-proclaimed virtuosi mistaking record sales for talent, oblivious of how they occur to the rest of the world like special needs children concerned only with their own enjoyment of things.” Music in this episode is from Otis McDonald: “Rich Man In The Sky” Mentioned in this episode… How to heal from a break up (friendship, business partnership and/or romantic) Flagrant abuse: What It Means Ways to recognize a pathological liar What kind of people make the most dangerous friends Versions of the truth: How much to share? Afterlife Modern Radio Drama Episode 10: Floor-Seat Hater
Against her better judgement Karen accepts Richard’s bribe to gatecrash a popular rap mogul’s Beverly Hills garden party. “For the past year, Karen had been enjoying enviable personal success—she hadn’t made any announcements about it, but anyone who knew her could see that her life had undergone a dramatic change. She appeared on magazine covers and Good Morning America, NPR, and was even on the Final Level Podcast and Howard Stern. Every time Karen saw her own face on a cover or heard her name mentioned in pop news, she felt energized knowing that all the misguided people who’d pissed on her, dissed her and left her frustrated would see her name too; as far as closure was concerned, she let that be enough. There were a number of toxic people Karen had stopped associating herself with; it had been a harbinger of her success.” Music in this episode is from Otis McDonald: Rich Man In The Sky Mentioned in this episode… How to heal from a break up (friendship, business partnership and/or romantic) Flagrant abuse: What It Means Ways to recognize a pathological liar What kind of people make the most dangerous friends Versions of the truth: How much to share? Afterlife Modern Radio Drama Episode 9: Real Pain For My Sham Friends
Envy betrays its host in subversive ways, when good friends go bad; Karen makes an attempt to escape wretched Richard, and the toxic friendship that just won’t end.. “Karen and Richard used to be friends. Though—as far as Karen was concerned—they weren’t anymore. This was partly because Richard had the social graces of a housefly, but on a deeper level Karen knew that Richard was an undercover hater and dangerous to be around, not because she openly wanted to harm Karen but because Richard didn’t have it in her to truly be happy for anyone she felt was doing better than herself. Richard reminded Karen of Fredo Corleone in The Godfather, capricious and troubled—a liability. A person’s recklessness wasn’t like a talisman they could wear that would put themselves alone in harm’s way yet allow safety for others. Recklessness was more like a fart, an airborne malfeasance traveling in the wake of its agent, an invisible assailant. Envy betrays its host in subversive ways. ” » Afterlife Modern Radio Drama is based on the book AFTERLIFE by Maxximillian Dafoe—read the first 7 chapters free, tap here. » Award-nominated Afterlife Modern Radio Drama is a paranormal satire from Maxximillian Dafoe, the creator of the Mollyville dystopian fantasy series. Afterlife Modern Radio Drama Episode 8: Fame
At the Leventhal estate, Jimmy snoops through Cassandra’s things, the fog begins to clear. Jimmy realizes that he’s famous.   “Had Jimmy been born a woman, he’d always thought he’d have had an addiction to high-heeled shoes. Digging through Cassandra’s panties, he now found lingerie more appealing. Jimmy looked at the final drawer and hoped for something good. Something juicy. What he found was more panties. All of them black, all of them lace. All deadly expensive, surely. Jimmy had spent some serious coin in Agent Provocateur one Christmas; he wasn’t familiar with the brand of Cassandra’s lingerie but could tell by the style of her underwear that it was pricy. When it came to lingerie, Jimmy found that the retail price had an indirect relationship to functionality. So, these see-thru lace panties—if they’re even still called that at this high a level—so delicate they look like they were stitched by spiders, with two transparent sashes attached to the inner waistband that crisscrossed framing the wearer’s navel in a triangle, must have come with insurance papers. The faintest hint of rose hit Jimmy in the face. He scooped up a fistful of Cassandra’s underwear in his hands and pulled it to his nostrils. He inhaled, deeply. And that’s when he felt the shift in atmosphere. He wasn’t alone.”   » Afterlife Modern Radio Drama is based on the book AFTERLIFE by Maxximillian Dafoe—read the first 7 chapters free, tap here. » Award-nominated Afterlife Modern Radio Drama is a paranormal satire from Maxximillian Dafoe, the creator of the Mollyville dystopian fantasy series. Afterlife Modern Radio Drama Episode 7: Hustle & Flow
“Tuxedo shirts. Jimmy had hit the motherload. This was a man’s closet through and through. Nice brands. Better than Jimmy had ever been able to afford. Alexander McQueen, Balmain, Tom Ford. During his lifetime, he’d gotten into Dolce & Gabbana and Michael Kors but the jackets that hung before him now—each silently begging to be chosen—had been his next-level wardrobe daydreams. Jimmy made a slow chopping motion in the air and passed his hand between two Tom Ford tuxedos hanging side-by-side, the first was the  medium blue color of denim, the other was cerulean blue. Classy threads, but in pimp colors. Jimmy couldn’t wait to lay eyes on this guy.” » Afterlife Modern Radio Drama is based on the book AFTERLIFE by Maxximillian Dafoe—read the first 7 chapters free, tap here. » Award-nominated Afterlife Modern Radio Drama is a paranormal satire from Maxximillian Dafoe, the creator of the Mollyville dystopian fantasy series. Afterlife Modern Radio Drama Episode 5: Hollywood Forever
The corpse of Jimmy Jennings arrives at the morgue. The ghost of Jimmy Jennings meets another ghost, weighs his options and hitches a ride with a familiar face. “At the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, Mortuary and Crematorium the van dropped Jimmy off. He followed his old meat-cage inside, but stopped at the entrance to the fridge. He didn’t need to go in there. Besides, there might be something in there he didn’t want to see … like someone who’d undergone an autopsy. It was what it was, but still… He didn’t want to see all that. Instead, he walked through the empty hallways. At the end of the same corridor in which he stood, he saw a woman in a hospital gown—another ghost. He put up one hand: an empathetic greeting in acknowledgement of their ostensibly similar situations; he couldn’t bring himself to smile or wave. She returned his salute. He wondered if she knew she was dead. She grinned. Yes, Jimmy postulated, she knew. He wondered how long the woman had been here. Hers must be another body in the cooler. One of the technicians had come out of the fridge from storing a new guest when he’d arrived. Jimmy supposed that a good-natured ghostly associate was better than a shrieking or weeping one; all the same, he wondered what she was grinning about. So far, Jimmy hadn’t found any of this amusing. He wasn’t feeling depressed about being dead—actually, he was glad to be finally moving around. Now that he had left his house he wanted to be away from his body too, but Jimmy didn’t have any ideas about what to do next.” » Afterlife Modern Radio Drama is based on the book AFTERLIFE by Maxximillian Dafoe—read the first 7 chapters free, tap here. » Award-nominated Afterlife Modern Radio Drama is a paranormal satire from Maxximillian Dafoe, the creator of the Mollyville dystopian fantasy series. Afterlife Modern Radio Drama Episode 4: Manopause
Rory Jennings explains male menopause, and why he didn’t divorce Jimmy’s mother (even though he wanted to for years). Jimmy revisits Brazil for a holiday. “Some years he’d been able to find a like-minded travel mate, someone eager to escape holidays, the smell of family, love and the lack thereof. Jimmy would hire a limousine and hit whatever nightclubs in town he’d heard mentioned in rap songs, or that were otherwise known to be frequented by celebrities. Even if it was a place they ‘used to go’ he still wanted to have a little taste.” » Afterlife Modern Radio Drama is based on the book AFTERLIFE by Maxximillian Dafoe—read the first 7 chapters free, tap here. » Award-nominated Afterlife Modern Radio Drama is a paranormal satire from Maxximillian Dafoe, the creator of the Mollyville dystopian fantasy series. Afterlife Modern Radio Drama Episode 3: Hide and Seek
Jimmy recovers some disturbing personal items; ‘the one who got away’ comes back to haunt the ghost of a dead man. “Wounded pride had funneled all but two things from Jimmy’s mind: money and new pussy—as much of both as he could get. Between the money he made doing special events catering and modeling jobs, he could afford to go to Skybar; to buy himself and a few ladies drinks if he wanted, but a few drinks didn’t go very far—on what he was earning bottle service was out of his price range at any venue. He switched his routine bar-hopping to strictly meeting women online. This cost him no money upfront but they’d usually end up at a restaurant afterward—Jimmy wasn’t a cheapskate, he wouldn’t let his dates pay—so he’d end up in a similar situation: feeling pressed for cash. After a time or two most women got bored with his stay-at-home dates and started seeing some other guy. Without more money, Jimmy realized that he’d always end up losing to the other guy—the guy with more money, a better car, better clothes … the guy who could give his girl more expensive (and more frequent) presents, afford better restaurants—that guy … Jimmy was tired of losing to that guy—Jimmy wanted to BE that guy.” » Based on the book AFTERLIFE by Maxximillian Dafoe—read the first 7 chapters free, tap here. » Award-nominated Afterlife Modern Radio Drama is a paranormal satire from Maxximillian Dafoe, the creator of the Mollyville dystopian fantasy series.   In this episode of Afterlife Modern Radio Drama, Jimmy Jennings takes inventory of the remnants of his lifestyle, recovers some contraband in his old room and recollects a childhood victory. “Jimmy realized what had happened the moment he woke up without being in excruciating pain. It was, of course, too much to hope that after so many years of being ineffective, the pain medication he’d been taking had finally worked. Afterlife Modern Radio Drama Episode 1: City of Angels
“The city of angels is an ironic nickname for a town with a reputation for being full to the brim with liars, fakes and a*$holes. Every year, thousands of people from all over the world immigrate to Los Angeles. Over fourteen-thousand people arrive every month to try to make their way, either in Hollywood or just to someplace with better weather. Immigrants to Los Angeles give up their proximity to family—and in some cases spouses, children and lifelong friends—to pursue their dream of fame, wealth, or just a job that pays decent money. They sacrifice a lot just to get here. Some of them find their way; others get distracted in the din of life as a waiter at Boa and entirely forget that they came to Los Angeles to pursue an artistic career. And it’s these people who are the assholes.” » Afterlife Modern Radio Drama Episode 01: City of Angels Musical Feature: “Rich Man In The Sky” by Otis McDonald Afterlife Modern Radio Drama is written, produced and performed by Maxximillian Dafoe.
