I am very thankful for the mentors in my life. As challenging as life is, it's important to have people in your life who care enough to guide you through (and sometimes around) the obstacles that life can present. Building relationships with people who have "been there and done that" can save you YEARS of dangers, toils and snares that you would encounter without their guidance.
In Matthew 16:24, Jesus said to his disciples, "If any of you wants to be my follower, you must turn from your selfish ways, take up your cross, and follow me." Jesus didn't tell the disciples to go get a PhD in theology, nor did he ask for their "two-cents" worth. He simply said "follow me."
We should have a similar mentality where mentoring is concerned.
It isn't always fun to hear that you need to make adjustments, but it is necessary if you want to grow. Sometimes the truth hurts, but its better to be hurt by the truth, than to be hurt by life.
You don't have to have the same mentor for all areas of your life. I have business mentors, my Pastor as a spiritual mentor, a fitness mentor and a financial mentor. The person who is a great fit to help you grow your business, might not be the best resource to help you get physically fit or help you with a relationship challenge, so its important to use wisdom when choosing who's guidance you will submit to.
One final, but very important note about your relationship with a mentor: Please be careful not to waste their time or yours.
Take time to examine who you give your focus and attention to and make changes if necessary. Sometimes, a mentor is in your life only for a season or two because as you grow and mature, you may need a different mentor in that area. Doing so will yield greater results in your life than you can currently imagine.
