#85 The Zoe Quinn Episode
During the first lockdown my guest this week, Zoe Quinn kept me thoroughly entertained. I’d look forward to her daily One Outfit One Exercise Instagram account and I’d watch her run all over Howth exercising as I’d tuck into another Twirl. I’d muse to myself, as Amy Poehler once said ,‘Good for you, not for me.’ In this episode Zoe talked to me about her Z Talk series, her former life in fashion and lessons she’s taken from this unique time in history we’re all living through.   Now, here comes the science part. The 80% is always free to listen to but not free to make. If you would like to support making it you could sign up to my Patreon here For €3 a month I record two audio diaries and various other little bits that are designed to make you LOL. If money is an issue - don’t worry about it. Instead you can also show your support for free by clicking five stars in iTunes and leaving a short review, something casual along this line of ‘WOWEE. ESTHER - WHAT A TALENT.’ I don’t want to put words in your mouth but something like that would be more than adequate. Not only that but you can follow me on Insta here too if you feel like it too. Sure why not Marion?   Have a great Christmas break and let’s see what 2021 has in store for us all.   Peace and love,    EO'MD. #84 The Lisa and Vanessa Creaven Episode
What’s the tooth, I mean truth behind dentist sisters Lisa and Vanessa Creavens huge success? Over the past (almost) five years, they have built their brand from zero to heroes of oral healthcare. Not only have the made a huge dent in the Irish market but their brand is now also stocked in a teeny tiny American store called TARGET! They are top of their game and I for one, of course, am 80% happy for them. You want the tooth? You can’t handle the tooth etc. But hopefully you can handle my chat with Lisa and Vanessa.    WITH ALL THAT SAID, if you want to support the podcast which I’m sure between 1 and 3 of you do, then please sign up to my Patreon here For just over €3 a month I record two audio diaries and various other little bits. Recording an audio diary this year has been particularly brilliant seeing as we've all been trapped in our homes and I've done shag all,but we have a laugh mates.    If money is an issue - don’t worry about it. Instead you can also show your support for free by clicking five stars in iTunes and leaving a short review, something casual along this line of ‘WOWEE. #83 The Hannah Saunders Episode
Ahoy Hoy! Welcome to another The 80% Podcast, the podcast where I am 80% happy for the success of my guests. This week, it's Hannah Saunders! Hannah Saunders founded her PR company when she was just 25. It’s a business she knows inside out, her dad being a superstar in the same field. Hannah has been determined to carve her own path though and achieve success on her own terms and on the back of her own hard work. There is no coat tail riding here. Aside from building her business and representing both emerging and established Irish brands, Hannah has also built up her own personal fandom on Instagram with 31.7k followers wanting to know what’s she’s wearing, where she's holidaying as well looking to her for hair and beauty advice.    WITH ALL THAT SAID, if you want to support the podcast which I’m sure between 1 and 3 of you do, then please sign up to my Patreon here For just over €3 a month I record two audio diaries and various other little bits. #82 The Shauna O'Reilly Episode
*This interview was recorded remotely during the Covid 19 pandemic 2020. Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No! It's something even better. It's Today FM's Shauna O'Reilly! You may hear her every day on the radio with Ian Dempsey slaying contestants with her song knowledge on Shaz AM or on Saturday nights, 6-9pm pumping de tunes but just who *is* Shauna O'Reilly? Is she a woman obsessed with making her own salsa? YES. Is she a woman who made the Slap Chop famous? YES. What is a Slap Chop? Well that's where I gotcha hooked! You're going to have to listen to find out. Am I good at this or what?! WITH ALL THAT SAID, making The 80% costs money and I've made over 80 of them to date. #81 The Nathan Foad Episode
Oh hi there! Last time I saw yo, living in fear of contracting a debilitating virus was the stuff of nightmares and now look at us! Good times guys, amirrrrriiight? After a long pandemic induced break, I am so glad to start this new series with the brilliant talent that is Nathan Foad. Nathan is a writer, comedian, performer, expert present wrapper and definitely not a hockey player. Nathan’s star is rising which of course, I am 80% happy for, 20% full of loathing for. Before the first lockdown Nathan executive produced a Channel 4 taster pilot for his original sitcom ‘Newark, Newark’ named after his home town Newark on Trent. But the success and achievement does not stop there which leaves me fuming. He has written for the BBC3/RTE production The Young Offenders, The Great British Bake Off: An Extra Slice for Channel 4 as well as being under commission from BBC Comedy and Comedy Central. If you haven’t see his brilliant online series Comedians in Quarantine, just click here baybuh. And if you’re looking for even more hilarity from Nathan, read his essays on his website and make sure you you follow him on Twitter and Instagram. Reader, je love him - he is a joy.  NOW WITH ALL THAT SAID, if you want to support the podcast which I’m sure between 1 and 3 of you do, then please sign up to my Patreon here For just over €3 a month I record two audio diaries and various other little bits. Recording an audio diary this year has been particularly brilliant seeing as we've all been trapped in our homes and I've done sh*t all,but we have a laugh mates. The Mini 'So you've found yourself in a Pandemic' Non-Episode
*This was recorded during the Covid 19 emergency. I hope you are safe wherever you are. Hello 80%-ers! Well, oh my my. Such a lot has changed in the world since we last met. The 80% has been put in cardboard box and is covered in straw like a hibernating tortoise for a while longer but in the meantime, I'm just say hiyas. For this special HARD SELL non-episode of The 80%, I've included a little sample of what you can expect over on my Patreon where I continue to record. I do two audio diaries there a month for a three dollah subscription which works out at just under three euro, less than the cost of three Twirls. I mean, who can read these days? Instead, just pop me in your ear buds and off I go! You can unsubscribe whenever you like but if you've ever enjoyed any of the 80+ episodes of The 80%, your support on Patreon would be great. #80 The Ciara Elliot Episode
Please note: this episode was recorded before the Covid 19 emergency. Welcome to the 80th (!!!) episode of The 80% - wowee! I am so pleased that my guest for this special episode was writer and editor Ciara Elliot. I spoke to Ciara a couple of months ago on Zoom, before any of us knew how often we'd be using it in the future. For that reason, the audio quality is a bit different this week. The 80% will be going into hibernation now for six weeks or so. This series was cut short due to the Coronavirus emergency but I'll be back with more excellent guests after some rest. If there's anyone terrific you think I should talk to, email 80percentpodcast@gmail.com. I'm open to ideas! In the meantime, in case you miss my tones, I can also be heard on Lennon Courtney Left Alone, a podcast I produce with Brendan Courtney and Sonya Lennon. It's great - like eavesdropping on two pals. Listen in all the usual places including here. But back to my guest! Ciara started her career working on the very cool Interview magazine in New York City where she worked alongside Ellen von Unworth and Bruce Weber. I loved this chat with Ciara because she has done so much and it’s always great to hear from someone who has worked hard at her career for so long and still has so much enthusiasm to create. FOLLOW THE LEADER: If you enjoy the podcast and want to support it (me), look for 'ESTHERTWONAMES' on Patreon. I write diaries and also record audio diaries which are designed to make you laugh. #79 The Domini Kemp Episode
Note: This interview was recorded in December 2019, before the Covid 19 emergency. Hello Fellow Humans, Another week in a global pandemic and what have we done? It’s still weird and uncomfortable for us all but if we all work together, apart we can help save lives and protect one another. All you have to do it sit tight and do nothing, well maybe listen to a podcast just like this one! This week my brilliant guest is chef and business woman, Domini Kemp. If you’ve been living under a bagel and never heard of the name, Domini Kemp, you’ve probably already eaten in one of her restaurants or cafes around Dublin. She is co-founder of Itsa group with her sister Peaches and launched the first Itsa Bagel on Abbey Street in 2000. She now owns Joe’s Coffee, Alchemy Juices, Hatch and Sons and Feast Catering Company.  Domini was born in the Bahamas and moved to Ireland as a teenager and since then, all roads have been leading towards, talking to me. She was beside herself. We had a great chat about food culture in her house growing up, familial expectations, the logistics of starting a food business and mentoring prisoners. I loved talking to Domini and she was the first guest to make me a flat white. What a treat.  I hope you are looking after yourself during this weird time.  Peace and love,  Esther.  FOLLOW, FOLLOW: Look at my great pics on Insta here: https://www.instagram.com/esthertwonames/ Gently lol at my incredible tweets here: https://twitter.com/esthertwonames The 80% is free to listen to but not to make. #78 The Laura de Barra Episode
Hello Stay At Homers. Please note that this chat was recorded before the Covid 19 emergency. I hope you are all staying safe at home and washing your hands. This week, the queen of The 80% is Gaff Goddess, Laura de Barra. Laura came to national attention via her Instagram account where she showed DIY tricks, tips and videos. In her day job in London, she is a property portfolio developer as well as illustrator, designer, author and of course, general She-IY expert. Her first book Gaff Goddess: Simple Tips and Tricks to Help You Run Your Home was published this year and is riding high in the Irish book charts.  Her She-IY expertise has seen her appear on RTE’s The Today Show and land a column with TheJournal.ie. Laura has also been featured in Image magazine and The Gentlewoman and sold out live shows in support of the launch of her book.   From training in fashion design to a best selling author, Laura has always given 100% of herself to whatever task is in front of her. As she says in her own words, how you do one thing is how you do everything.  This is the Laura de Barra episode. I hope you enjoy! #77 The Mairead Ronan Episode
Hello Universe and galaxies beyond, It’s weird to put out a podcast during this strange time. I am very aware that many of us are feeling worried and anxious. Businesses are at stake, our routines have been interrupted and long held plans have had to be rearranged. I am feeling it all with you. It really is a matter of life or death at the moment and of course it is silly putting these podcasts out into the world. I do so knowing that people's plates are already full and that you may feel overwhelmed but hope you can use this episode as a distraction for forty minutes or so. With all that said, let me tell you about this week's guest. This week I am 80% happy for Mairead Ronan, Today FM and TV broadcaster, business owner, Dancing with the Stars winner and lots more besides. We had a great chat outside the loo of Central Hotel on Exchequer St a few weeks ago and then we retired to a nearby room where a book club was taking place. I am truly an ace podcaster. Why did I not book a studio? Indeed. Indeed. At one point, if you listen closely, you can probably hear a loo flushing which is NO reflection on my career thank you very much! I’ve spoken to Mairead many times remotely over the years during her time as producer on the Ian Dempsey Breakfast Show so it was great to have a chat with her face to face finally. We talked about how she started out studying in Ballyfermot College, got work experience in MTV and Today FM and then didn’t leave for 15 years. She took some time away from Marconi House (Today FM's building) for couple of years to focus on other things (including winning Dancing with the Stars) but returned in 2019 to present her own weekday show. I think this is a great episode if you’re thinking of trying something new but have the fear. It’s never too late to try something new so make a plan, start small and don’t wait for anyone else’s permission. It may never come! Don’t waste your precious time - just make sure you wash your hands thoroughly ; ) If you enjoyed this episode, please x1,000,000 go and leave a review on iTunes. It really helps the podcast move up the charts and you do want to help Esther out don't you? DON'T YOU!???? Peace and love, peace and love, EO'MD. #76 - The Linda Martin Episode
Hello Universe! I am so pleased to be back being 80% happy for people and very happy that the first guest of this new series is the iconic Linda Martin!   I spoke to Linda a few months ago, just before Christmas in Collaborative Studios (ideal for all your podcasting needs) in town. Big thanks to Shane Dempsey in Collaborative for organising the set up for me - you can hear me kicking him out at the start because I am such a DIVA - je kid.   Linda Martin grew up in Belfast and has performed since she was young although she originally wanted to be a vet. In the 1970s and 80s she toured with the band Chips and even opened up for Fleetwood Mac once. She said there was so much work at the time she was lucky if she got one day off a week. She was living her dreams. Linda is the most frequent entrant in the National Song Contest having entered nine times. She was eventually victorious in 1992 when she won the 37th Eurovision Song Contest in Malmo Sweden with the Johnny Logan penned song, Why Me? Linda further cemented her iconic status when she took on the role of judge/mentor in Popstars in 2001. During the series former Girls Aloud member Nadine Coyle famously pretended she had lost her passport when she lied about her age. The clip went viral. Linda was also a presenter on the brilliant The Lyrics Board (bring it baaaack), worked with old pal Louis Walsh on the first series of The X Factor and is still involved in the Eurovision universe.    When not performing around Ireland and Europe, Linda loves pottering about the garden at her home with her TWELVE dogs. Animal welfare is a true passion of hers.   Linda was an absolute delight to talk to.I hope you enjoy listening to her tales.    Don’t forget new episodes of The 80% DROP every Monday and you can listen free wherever you get your podcasts.  If you also want to read some words by me you can subscribe to my lovely newsletter at this lovely newsletter link. Lovely. It is also free o'charge.   However, if you want to support the podcast and get more bits, be a cool dude/dudette and subscribe to my Patreon. #75 Caroline O'Donoghue
SAINTS ALIVE! EPISODE 75! Here ye! Here ye! Welcome to the last episode of this series of The 80%. I have ended this run of the podcast with a supersonic guest in the form of writer, podcaster and whirl of effervescence, Caroline O'Donoghue. I will return in November as now I must set off on my hunt, like Viggo Mortensen in Lord of The Rings, to find new guests...YIKES! This series I've spoken to some incredible people who all happen to be women. Huge thanks to Saoirse McHugh, Melanie Morris, Vicki Notaro, Anna Haugh, Karen Constantine, Ciara Kelly, Merle O'Grady, Glenda Gilson, Tara Stewart, Sophie White, Eimear Varian Barry and now Caroline, who all generously gave of their time, wit and wisdom, to this 5ft11 cutie pie. But no timare! I already have names pencilled in to record with for series six, so The 80% will return. To tide you over until then, I have made another podcast called Esther Is In Bits where we talk about being in bits and then being better. So far, I've recorded chats with some incredible people about subjects such as fertility, gender, sleep (!) and grief to name but a few. Go nuts and follow me on Instagram and Twitter for all the latest updates and incredible images from me. Until we meet again, keep it fresh, keep it sexy and don't forget to put the oxygen mask of life on yourself first. Light the candles, drink the alcoholic or non-alcoholic wine and unhook your bra, real or metaphorical! #74 Eimear Varian Barry
SHUT THAT DOOR-IT'S EPISODE 74! Eimear Varian Barry started out her media career producing in Red FM in Cork. At 21 she moved to New York to get experience in fashion and media which included working on the second Sex And The City film! During her time there, she also assisted as a stylist in Rolling Stone but like a rolling stone, she gathered no moss and took a big leap across the pond instead to Melbourne Australia. Whilst in Oz she worked at Style.com, met her partner Daniel and moved all the way back to the U.K. A tale as old as time. EVB is huge on Instagram and is at the very top of her game as an online creative. She acts as photographer, stylist and creative director for huge brands but during our chat, she points out that it hasn't all been wine and honey. When she first started and had just had her first daughter Saoirse, she says her and Daniel were living on housing benefit. Eimear has worked her piece of the internet to the max and has managed to work it into a full-time gig. She's a bladdy wonder mates and I hope you like it. Until next Tuesday! EO'MD. #73 Sophie White
EPISODE 73: WOW WEE! Way back at start of The 80%, (episode number twelve!) I chatted with this week’s guest, the exceedingly talented and tenacious, Sophie White. Back then, Sophie had only written one book, had a weekly column in the Sunday Independent (which she still has) and been published in countless magazines and papers. I mean, what had she really achieved, eh? But Sophie was one woman in search of a novel, and 'ever tried. ever failed' she kept going, pursuing her creative dream which has been realised in the form of her debut work of fiction, Filter This. We talked about getting to know a washing machine, rejection, the artifice, skill and enjoyment of creating a digital life, online shame and of course, her latest work. I've included links to most of the things we mentioned in this week's The 80% below. I hope you enjoy this week's chat and my Ronan Keating impression. I am available for bookings worldwide. A new episode will be up next Tuesday. EO'MD. P.S This episode is free to listen wherever you get your podcasts. If you like this it, you could leave a form of tip by sharing the link on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram or laminate the link, stick it up in on the nearest bus shelter and tell everyone to listen. #72 Tara Stewart
TWIT TWOO-IT'S EPISODE 72. **Before I launch into the deets on this week's guest, I want to give you an advance warning that the audio for the interview part is not great for this episode. I contemplated not uploading it at all (but I have, as you can see) and can only apologise for the poor quality. With that said, here comes the science part... Tara Stewart's ascent to the top of the Irish media has been rapid. She’s only been working in radio for four years and already has her own show on 2FM! Not only that but she’s in demand at events and launches around Dublin City, DJ-ing her Aussie tush off in tiny glasses and second hand ensembles. PLUS she’s even ruddy signed to Select Model Management in London-I was positively seething with jealousy talking to her. Tara is known for her style and has a huge and dedicated following on Instagram. #71 Glenda Gilson
SHAKE YOUR BUM-IT'S EPISODE 71! This week’s guest is the one and only, double G, Glenda Gilson. You might know her from her 11 year stint on TV3's Xpose but Glenda has been working in the industry since she was three years old! In the late 90s and early 2000s, you could barely pick up a paper without seeing Glenda in it which she parlayed into a full blown TV career. She spoke to me about how she first got started, dancing with Michael Jackson and staying in the industry for so long. Glenda has met everyone including Donald Trump and even Snoop Dog when they hosted the Meteor Awards together. She is also thick as thieves with Niall Horan, Westlife, Louis Walsh and her Ireland’s Got Mor Talent host James Kavanagh. Glenda has certainly come a long way from her Bubble Hits days and her hard work continues to pay off. In 2018 she also launched her jewellery line G by Glenda which no doubt will be a success just like everything else she has turned her hand to. I am a solid 80% happy for all she has achieved so far! If you enjoy this week's episode, go nuts share the link with your pals.It also really helps if you subscribe and leave a review on iTunes-you don't have to have an iPhone, just open up iTunes on a desktop and search for The 80%. The 80% is free to listen to so sharing links and leaving reviews is like putting a tip in the tip jar. Thanks so much for listening and until next Tuesday...ADIOS! EO'MD. #70 Merle O'Grady
EPISODE 70: IT’S ALL GRADY, BABY!   Back when I started The 80%, in 1875, Merle was kind and brave enough to come on and talk to me. I had no clue what I was doing but took the chance to put out a show on a digital station so I could then podcast it. Back then it would take me at least a week to edit one episode. I use to get so frustrated and felt like giving in all the time, but week by week I got a bit faster and now it only takes a mere 6 days to make each one-JK! I’ve included the link to my old chat with Merle below if you want to listen back.   In the five years since she’s we first met, a lot has changed in Merle’s life. She moved home to Dublin from London where her career was in its ascendancy. She then had her fabulous daughter Vega and well, her life blew up! She talked to me about how she suffered with post-natal depression and how then had to put herself and career back together. Merle threw out all the ideas she had about what her life should look like and instead moved into a new, different version of herself.   During my chat with Merle, something I heard Jane Fonda say in an interview came to me ‘I can’t make my life longer but I can make it wider and deeper.’ We all have to reimagine ourselves endlessly throughout our lifetimes as we lose bits ourselves and then recreate new incarnations of us in response. Merle is a living example of this. I hope you enjoy it. Don't forget to like, share and leave a review on iTunes if you enjoyed listening. It's easy to do on an iPhone but if you don't have an iPhone, just open up iTunes on your desktop and you can do it there. This podcast is free and leaving reviews really helps more people see the podcast. DO YOU FEEL GUILTED INTO DOING IT NOW-HUH?? ; ) Go on! Until next Tuesday my friends! #69 Dr. Ciara Kelly
#69 EPISODE 69! ‘ALLO SAUCY! Whilst I struggle to excel in one career, Ciara Kelly has managed to achieve solid gold, A+ status, in two. In her lifetime, she has managed to gain a medical degree, land a column in a national newspaper and get on the tele with Operation Transformation. She then had the audacity to leave her full-time career as a GP and land a job presenting Lunchtime Live, on Newstalk 106.8. How very dare she! I fully expect her to woman a space shuttle to Mars by 2021-this woman has no fear! Ciara shared how she ended up on the radio, asking for what you want and all the twists life took to get her to where she is now. I hope you enjoy it 80%-ers! Until next Tueday, keep it fresh.
