River Castelonia is the Co-Founder and Executive Director at HavenLabs, a non-profit being assembled by engineers, programmers, and thinkers. The mission of HavenLabs is to design custom 3D printed prosthetics for American Veterans. HavenLabs hopes to be role models for others in the community and push the boundaries of 3D printing applications. With the use of 3D scanning technology, HavenLabs will be able to create an exact fit that is contoured to the shape of the amputee’s limb, therefore offering a true extension of the individual. Using this innovative process takes mere minutes, whereas traditional prosthetic molds take hours. By using 3D printing the team is able to create prosthetics that are not only customized, but also made with unique materials. The 3D design process saves time from having to experiment with expensive molds and allows for flexibility and creativity. Last but not least, 3D printing dramatically reduces the cost of prototyping prosthetics enabling access to millions of people worldwide. River’s passion for designing, creating and introducing prosthetics for people in need shines through in his vision and in his work. If you know someone who may be in need of a prosthetic arm, whether they are a veteran, pet or just a friend, be sure to consider the possibility of a customizable 3D printed prosthetic. The 3D Masterminds Podcast 014: How To (Really) Profit From The 3D Printing Revolution - The 3D Masterminds Podcast: 3D Printing | Unbelievable Ideas | Innovation | Business | Next Industrial Revolution
In this very special episode I discuss a multitude of ways anyone can begin to learn how to utilize 3D printing technology. Whether you are simply optimizing your business or changing the landscape of architecture, there are almost infinite possibilities for the use of 3D printing. I definitely encourage beginning 3D enthusiasts to first experiment with creative projects such as 3D modeling or simply sharing the 3D printer you already have. 3D printing is a phenomenal tool to start learning about the possibilities of the next industrial revolution because of the front to end process that is available now worldwide. Think it, design it, print it. It really has become that simple. The toughest challenge, as with most businesses, will be marketing your idea. Although I published this book about an year ago the 7 ways I outlined and the fundamentals of 3D printing technology still ring true today. As a bonus I have included one extra way to make money, so stay tuned (and it’s an important one too!). The 3D Masterminds Podcast 012: Will Van Epern, Vice President of Avatarium 3D - The 3D Masterminds Podcast: 3D Printing | Unbelievable Ideas | Innovation | Business | Next Industrial Revolution
Will Van Epern is the Vice President of Avatarium 3D which is a next generation 3D scanning machine. Instead of taking image captures piece by piece Avatarium 3D literally takes a snapshot of your entire scan at once. The entire process is seamless and I even got a chance to test out a scan for myself at the Inside 3D Printing Conference in Santa Clara. The machine is awe-inspiring and comparable to one of those chambers you see in the movie Aliens, but way cooler. You strike a pose and the operator takes a snapshot. The entire booth flashes at once and presto your body (or anything) has been scanned! Distinctly, the procedure is called photogrammetry which is a single shutter click that uses multiple cameras firing simultaneously. This process is instantaneous markedly faster and more efficient than other scanning methods we have tested as it can capture objects in motion. The great thing is that the virtual aspect of the technology prepares Avatarium well not only for 3D printing but also Virtual Reality applications in the future. Avatarium 3D’s photogrammetry array is something you have to see to believe.
