Mike Curato, Thank You For Coming Out (While Staying In)

Carmelyn Malalis, Thank You For Coming Out (While Staying In)

Malalis (she/her). Carmelyn was appointed Chair and Commissioner of the New York City Commission on Human Rights, the city agency tasked with combating discrimination in New York City, in 2014 following more than a decade in private practice as an advocate for employees’ rights in the workplace. Prior to her appointment, Commissioner Malalis was a partner at Outten & Golden LLP where she co-founded and co-chaired its Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Workplace Rights Practice Group. While in the private sector, she worked with several organizations on amicus briefs, pro bono, and other projects, including Lambda Legal, the National Center for Lesbian Rights, the ACLU and its local affiliates, the Sylvia Rivera Law Project, the Transgender Legal Defense and Education Fund, the NAACP Legal Defense and Education Fund, the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, and others. She has served on a number of boards and advisory groups, including the New York City Bar Association’s Executive Committee and its Committee on LGBTQ Rights; Human Rights Watch’s Advisory Committee of the LGBT Rights Project; the Committee on Diversity in the Legal Profession of the American Bar Association’s Section on Labor and Employment Law; and the board of Queers for Economic Justice. She lives in Brooklyn with her wife and two children. Shakina, Thank You For Coming Out Live (Again!)
This week, we’re revisiting one of our favorite episodes, our season two premiere with special guest, Shakina (she/her)! You can catch her new show, “Connecting,” premiering tonight at 8 p.m. Eastern on NBC. Thank You For Coming Out” kicked off its second season with a live celebration Saturday Jan. 25 at Caveat on the Lower East Side. Featuring an intimate chat with actress Shakina, best known for her work on “Difficult People” and “Transparent ‘Musicale Finale,’” the evening was its own musical event with several performances from the show’s past guests. Arya Marvazy, Thank You For Coming Out (While Staying In)

Kate Barnhart, Thank You For Coming Out (While Staying In)

Kate Barnhart is a long-time AIDS activist and member of ACT UP/NY who has engaged in numerous acts of civil disobedience protesting issues related to HIV/AIDS, healthcare, and police brutality. She has worked with at-risk youth since 1994, including six years working with young felons at CASES, an alternative-to-incarceration program. Since 2001, she has worked with homeless LGBTQ+ youth. She spent five years serving as Director of Sylvia’s Place, an emergency shelter for LGBTQ+ homeless youth, and is currently the Executive Director of New Alternatives for LGBTQ+ Homeless Youth, an organization she founded in October 2008. In her free time, Ms. Barnhart rescues and rehabilitates stray cats.
