The Two Gay Geeks 🏳️🌈 have a chat with Kai Hazelwood, choreographer, teacher, and organizer of The Unicorn party in Los Angeles, a celebration of Bi Culture. She tells us about her career and how she got interested in creating this new event for the community in Los Angeles. Have a listen and we hope you enjoy this as much as we did. About Kai Hazelwood Kai is a dedicated choreographer, dance educator, event producer, and public speaker. She works to raise the profile of bi+/queer and BIPOC community issues through art projects, events, and public speaking. Kai Hazelwood received her BFA from UCLA, and has performed across North America. Kai is also co-organizer of AmBi LA, an over 3,000 people strong social and support group for bi+ people. She has appeared in BuzzFeed videos, led bi+ storytelling workshops, and speaks at high schools and colleges about bi+ community issues. She choreographed the 2016 bi+ contingent of the LA Pride Parade featuring the cast of Crazy Ex-Girlfriend. She is the Resident Choreographer for Theatre Dybbuk, and has created numerous productions of her own. Kai was faculty at AMDA College & Conservatory (4 years), and guest choreographer for Martz Contemporary Dance in Barcelona Spain before touring with Axis Dance Company. In 2017 she signed with Go 2 Talent Agency, and was an Art Omi International Arts Center Choreographic Resident. In 2018 Kai was invited to The Black Choreographer’s Festival in San Francisco, named an Artist in Residence for the City of Los Angeles, and invited to Jacob’s Pillow as part of the National Presenter’s Forum. She is a member of the 2019 Dance USA Institute for Leadership cohort, the Artistic Director of Downtown Dance & Movement in Los Angeles, and Good Trouble Makers a collective of art-agitators based in Los Angeles.
