PicturePhone: Tech History That Deserves to be Remembered
Today, video chatting on services like Facebook messenger and Apple FaceTime seem natural, and with the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic wrecking havoc on economies and forcing workers and school-goers to stay at home, video chatting, teleconferencing, and telepresence has become the new normal. Services like Zoom, Google Meet, and Facebook Rooms are becoming more and more popular among businesses and consumers, alike. Believe it or not though, for decades, the public showed very little interest in video chatting. It was 1964, and Bell System, the massive corporation responsible for bringing the world the telephone, introduced a device they called ‘PicturePhone’. The idea was to get everyone to replace their voice-only phones with the new device. The problem was, however, that the monthly cost for PicturePhone and included service was $160 (about $1000 in today’s dollars) a month for the phone and included service. Although prohibitively expensive, Bell’s PicturePhone was an amazing technical achievement. Remember, there was no broadband or even an internet at the time. In fact, the only nation-wide network that existed was the analog telephone phone system, so that’s what they used. Twisted pair copper wire lines.Image Source: [beatriceco.com]Using the telephone network, the new PicturePhone system was able to produce grey-scale (black and white) video on a screen that was about 5 inches across. This was absolutely astonishing for the time, and the device used a CCD (Charged Coupled Device) camera sensor, the same type used in a modern smartphone. The camera had height and width controls, so that the image could be easily adjusted.Although in advertisements for the device, you would see heart-warming scenes such as a grandmother enjoying a chat with her daughter and granddaughter, in reality, very few people actually used the device. It was certainly possible, though, and the device was meant to be the most revolutionary communication medium of the century. The Bell System PicturePhone unfortunately, however, failed miserably as a consumer product.Image Source: [latimes.com]To get people interested in the new platform, Bell created PicturePhone booths in major cities like Chicago, New York, and Washington DC. These facilities were constructed in an attempt to introduce the their fancy new high-tech phones to the public. The cost to use the booths was an astounding $20 per minute. That’s $150 today. The company hoped to create a billion dollar business with 1 million phones in use by 1980, and 12 million by the year 2000. The system failed to come anywhere near this figure, though, seeing only 71 people using it within 6 months of its release. By 1970, that number had fallen to literally 0.Support the show (http://onechairroom.com/donate)

Use The OnePlus 8 Pro to See Through Plastic
https://techandgeek.comHave you ever wanted to see through something, Superman XRAY style? Well, if you have a OnePlus 8 Pro, you can. This device has a unique feature that allows it to see through certain materials as if they were transparent.Any camera can see infrared, such as the type of light emitted from TV remote controls, but some OnePlus 8 Pro users have discovered that the phone can see through plastic by using the monochrome color-filter camera sensor. A good example of this is the type of plastic used on the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller. It can see right through it! It seems to be able to only see through plastics that don’t have any kind of infrared shielding. It’s really easy to try out for yourself. Just open the OnePlus 8 Pro’s camera, then switch the color mode to “Photocrom.” You’ll then be able to see through non-IR-shielded plastics, and who knows, maybe some other materials. Sounds like it’s time to experiment with this! This obviously was not an intentional feature by OnePlus, and it more than likely won’t have any practical application, but it’s still cool, right? The OnePlus 8 Pro is actually a really nice device and is worth picking up one even if you don’t need XRAY vision. Aside from the color-filter camera, it’s also got a Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 processor, 8GB or 12GB of RAM, and 128GB or 256GB of storage, depending on the options you choose. You can pick one of these phones up for $999 on Amazon, and if you think that price is ridiculously high to pay for a phone, then maybe you should check out this article for some clarification.Support the show (http://onechairroom.com/donate)

Gary Kildall: Tech History That Deserves to be Remembered
techandgeek.comhttp://onechairroom.comhttps://twitter.com/techandgeekIt was the year 1977, and a new company, Apple Computers, had recently become very successful with the first PC, the Apple II.This new machine was the first mass produced personal computer that you didn’t have to put together yourself. Within 3 years of their breakthrough success, the personal computer industry was worth over a billion dollars. This is because for the first time in history, having a computer meant you could amplify your productivity and intellect in the comfort of your own home.IBM, who at the time was in the corporate computer business, only sold large mainframes. These were more or less newer versions of the original computers, like the ENIAC and UNIVAC. And being the massive business that they are, IBM saw huge economic opportunity in the burgeoning PC industry. In fact, this was the opportunity of all opportunities.By 1980 IBM had an eye on Apple’s success in the home computer market, and they realized that they were wrong about what they originally thought of the PC. It wasn’t just a toy for hobbyist’s anymore. These things could actually be useful. The problem for IBM, is that it was such a huge company, that it was bogged down by its own bureaucracy and red tape. This made it very slow when it came to decisions. There was an approval process for absolutely everything. It would have taken them years to come up with just a PC design, let alone a finished product. They were aware of this, and there was concern within the company that they may not be able to bring a computer to market fast enough to compete with Apple. The solution to this problem came in the form of a small, and somewhat secret team within the company.Support the show (http://onechairroom.com/donate)
