Thriving Rather Than Surviving - Episode 180
In today's episode, Jim discusses his 10 tips to not only survive but thrive as a school counselor in this crazy, online learning environment. Here are the 10 tips plus two bonus tips. 1. Focus on what you can do rather than what you can’t. 2. Protect yourself. Use a Google voice number instead of your private phone, but continue to call and communicate with your kids. 3. Develop or update your list of community resources. Develop a mental health page. 4. Use video -- Chat or youtube, this is a way to get in front of the kids. 5. Take the top off the thunderstorm. 6. It OK to not know. Try new avenues until you find one that works. 7. Develop a work plan. Get dressed. Keep work and home as separate as possible. 8. Be involved -- Get invites to PLC, grade level and staff meetings. Be visible. 9. Stop watching the news. Doom and gloom headlines will only make you gloomy 10. Communication with staff and people in your building. Bonus Tips Assume Positive Intent. Give yourself the same grace you show to others.
