TT 3: Taylor Swift, Uber Riots in Paris, The Apple Watch, and More! - Tech Telegraph
This week we discuss Taylor Swift, Uber starts riots in Paris, condoms, the confederate flag, the Apple Watch, and more! Hosts: Aaron Markey, Cody Engel, and Zack Wyld. Taylor Swift and Apple [2:15] To Apple, Love Taylor Taylor Swift wrote a letter to Apple explaining why they needed to pay artists during the free trial period. Essentially, people don't expect Apple to give away free products and Apple shouldn't expect artists to give away their music for a quarter of the year. It's especially detrimental when songs are usually only relevant during the first few months of release and are then forgotten about until they pop up in a playlist months or years later. Apple Will Pay Royalties During Free Trial After being smacked down by Taylor Swift, Apple decided to change their tune. Late Sunday night Apple VP Eddy Cue responded to Taylor's letter revealing that the company would pay artists, labels, and publishers for their streams during the three-month free trial. Taylor Swift Says Her Album '1989' Will be on Apple Music Then in other T-Swift Apple news, Tay-Tay announced that the her album '1989' will be available on Apple Music (which is unavailable on other streaming services). This works out as a major endorsement for the new streaming service launching on June 30th. Apple Music Signs Beggars Group Apple Paying Just $0.002 Per Stream During Its Free Trial Period… Google Launches Free Music Streaming Ahead of Apple Music Debut Uber News [17:45] This week BloombergBusiness  wrote an excellent article about how Uber enters into new cities. This Is How Uber Takes Over a City takes you through how the company got into Portland, Oregon and the massive amount of political influence the company has through their lobbying efforts. French Taxi Drivers Lock Down Paris in Huge Anti-Uber Protest French taxi drivers blocked off roads to airports in Paris on Thursday, June 25th as part of a nationwide protest against Uber. Thousands of drivers participated in the strike where tensions between taxi unions and private car services are running high. These were not non-violent protests either (read: these were violent protests), where protesters burned tires, turned over cars along major highways, and locked Courtnery Love in a car while they attacked it with baseball bats. There were also reports of taxi drivers asking Uber drivers for rides, having them go to remote locations and then proceeding to attack them. Istanbul, Your UberBOAT is Arrive Now Uber also announced that patrons in Istanbul will be able to start requesting boats from Bosphorus on-demand. Hopefully Uber brings this to Chicago and Milwaukee next (I'd throw money at that). How a Tweet Turned Uber's First Hire Into a Billionaire Ryan Grave, Uber's first hire, responded to a tweet Travis Kalanick sent out. Travis was looking for people to join his new location based service with big equity, to which Ryan repsonded "Here's a tip, email me :)". One thing led to another and before we knew it Ryan Graves made it to the Forbe's list of the world's billionaires. Just in case you are curious, Graves is currently worth $1.4 billion. Moral of the story? Tweet more. In Other News... We can't possibly have strong opinions on everything and that's why there is other news. Essentially it's stuff worth talking about, but it's not stuff we necessarily want to have long drawn out discussions about.
