Is the Earth Sentient?
We’ve always known that the earth is alive. But the idea of it having sentience, or a mind of its own, is a fairly recent idea. Does the earth exhibit the same features as other living, sentient organisms like you and I? The earth having comparable features to a human being is novel. It has skin in the form of its outer and inner crust, an internal thermoregulation system, trees to serve as hair, and rivers that flow like veins. If we realized that our environment was just as human as we are, would we be better inspired to rise to our role as stewards of the earth? Join Alexander and Jason as they explore the possibility of the earth being a living, breathing, thinking being. It’s Time to Do Better According to scientists, the earth remains an immature technosphere. It has networked communication, transportation, computer systems, technology, and power. However, it is still immature because these technologies are not connected to the earth’s systems. Instead, it takes from the earth to produce these devices. This means that the technosphere is working against our progress. We need to start supporting and advocating for technologies that protect the earth. For example, lessening our dependence on fossil fuels because they have a negative impact on the seas and atmosphere. Reducing our carbon footprint to improve air quality. Prioritizing the development of technologies that are energy-efficient and eco-friendly. As long as the technology and energy we use to stay alive are harming the planet, we cannot ensure humanity’s progress. What’s your data worth? Sign up for TARTLE through this link here. The Secret to YOUR Success in Business, Leadership, and Life with Glenn Gow
Join Alexander as he welcomes Glenn Gow to TCAST. Together, they discuss his work as “the architect of CEOs” and the key to success for leaders with a vision. Having an Educational Mindset According to Glenn, everyone in the Olympics has at least one coach in the back room giving them the motivation and training they need to become high performers. The key to unlocking optimal performance is cultivating an educational mindset and a healthy sense of self-awareness. The Key to High Performance: Adaptation A CEO’s main challenge is to scale alongside their business. This means that they need to move from managing everything across the board to delegating these tasks to experts who are capable of running it on their behalf. As a result, the CEO’s time is freed and they can focus on bringing more value to the organization. The challenge is that as their organization grows, the strengths that CEOs initially brought to the table may not necessarily be the strengths that it needs to maintain momentum. At this point, the objective perspective of a coach may be necessary for the rising CEO to figure out how they should approach this opportunity for growth. Scaling With the Business One of the indicators that leaders are struggling with the call for growth is in revenue measurement. Typically, CEOs want to grow rapidly and have a plan in place to make that happen. But when the business commits and the team fails to hit the target, the pressure is on - from the board of directors, or the CEOs themselves. Glenn emphasizes that the unique aspect of being a CEO is that you have ultimate responsibility over the entire business. It’s up to you to find the answers to key questions like: what does the management team of your scaling business look like? How about the organizational structure? What work culture has been set in place and how do newcomers to the business understand the essence of that culture? Self-responsibility will play a key role in the lives of successful leaders. With that said: do you think you’ve got what it takes? What’s your data worth? Sign up for TARTLE through this link here. Follow Alexander McCaig on Twitter and Linkedin. Smishing, Scams, and Human Trafficking
Dealing with the threat of being catfished, phished, or scammed out of your personal information and money online has become a crucial aspect of internet health and safety. Plenty of companies invest heavily in cybersecurity and educational materials to ensure their clients, especially vulnerable parties like the elderly and other underrepresented online communities, do not fall victim to these malicious actors. Join Alexander and Jason as they explore modern technology and cryptocurrency’s relationship with human trafficking and internet scams. Depriving People of Free Will Pig butchering is a special kind of scam where the malicious actor builds up a close relationship with their victim over time, similar to the way that pigs are fattened up before slaughter. There are entire scam centers in Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia, where people have been deceived and trafficked specifically to man these locations. On a less direct level, tech companies are playing the long game with your attention span and data. You are being bombarded with offers, discounts, promotions, and information every minute you spend online with the end goal of getting you addicted to their reality. The very act of donning an AR or VR headset is disconcerting because it cuts you off from the world in a very physical sense. All the sensory and peripheral information you’re used to receiving is cut off and you are hyper-focused on what the technology feeds you. Avoiding Dystopia in the Metaverse Every opportunity for worldbuilding comes with the threat of creating a dystopia. It’s easy to live under false pretenses. But the disrespect for human autonomy, free will, and the value of work will eventually have a negative impact on our society. If we start working against this today, we still have the time to change the course of technological development. As data champions, we need to ensure that the technology designed does not squander our free will and replace a human beings. Rather, it should become an extension of our personhood, and the embodiment of respect for our free will. What’s your data worth? Sign up for TARTLE through this link here. How Big Data Hurts the Environment & What YOU Can Do to Help
Alexander McCaig and Jason Rigby discuss the dangers of relying on centralization and data centers for the environment, society, and the progress of humanity. They also talk about how a recent explosion in one of Google’s Iowa-based data centers, followed by massive outages around the world, led to three electricians being injured. Building on an Unstable Foundation Imagine the chaos that would happen if Google Maps just stopped working for a day. The average civilian no longer had the technology they needed to find the fastest routes to work and get a birds-eye view of the traffic in their city. Businesses and restaurants would struggle to help customers find their brick-and-mortar locations. Food delivery riders would have to map out routes on their own. A day without the Maps could set us back by several days in terms of global efficiency. This just shows how fragile the internet and data processing is. Technology has become a part of our society’s foundation. But have we engineered and regulated it to be foolproof? Is It Time to Decentralize? Data blips can cripple society for far longer than the actual occurrence. So when they do happen, Jason believes that we need to look at the cloud and understand how we are missing out because we rely on centralized systems to process our information. We could, instead, use the combined processing power that all of our individual smartphones and devices have to decentralize the system and manage how the internet functions from there. As blockchain technology develops, becomes more efficient, and is integrated into society, this should be the future of how we deal with data. There is no reason to keep a centralized server system when all our individual devices can have the power to run everything decentralized. What’s your data worth? Revealing Our Top BIG Takes on Google, Microchips, & Data Now
Join Alexander and Jason as they discuss how geopolitical tensions are destabilizing the chip manufacturing industry - and what this means for the future of technology. Continued Geopolitical Tensions Affect Chip Supply Chips are important for cars, smartphones, and medical equipment. The world is currently experiencing a chip shortage, which has led to limited production of new vehicles and smartphones. This means that people must grapple with higher prices for these products. One main reason behind the shortage is the geopolitical tension between Taiwan and China. Taiwan is home to more than 90 percent of the manufacturing capacity for the world’s most advanced semiconductors, which are a crucial component for making chips. In addition, the Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company is also the world’s largest and most critical chip manufacturer. China’s refusal to recognize Taiwan as a sovereign country, as well as its own means that the rest of the world must work with restricted access to this stronghold of chip manufacturing. Honing American Competitive Edge in Chip Manufacturing In anticipation of the decrease in chip supply, the United States Congress has passed the CHIPS and Science Act, signed by Joe Biden, which would have more than $200 billion invested in semiconductor chip manufacturing over the next five years. These latest measures to stimulate the local chip manufacturing industry raise concerns on whether taxpayers’ money is going to be used to create a monopoly for existing companies. This would stifle competition and create a situation similar to Wall Street, where the industry would eventually become “too big to fail.” A collapse in chip manufacturing would cripple the entire economy. Furthermore, Alexander and Jason point out the need for American manufacturers and data centers to offer competitive wages to workers. The wage gap between the jobs offered locally and the ones offered in Taiwan can make the move to another country more tempting. The resulting loss of talent would have a clear impact on the US. If the United States is to succeed in its goal of becoming a big player in the chip manufacturing industry, it will need better protections against monopolistic mega industries and unfair labor practices. Back to the Source: Why YOU Need TARTLE to Win at Data
How much effort should you put into creating new things? With all the technologies available to us now, data and scalable algorithms will be the key to making sure that businesses grow effectively. Join Alexander and Jason as they explore what it means to have a “quantum advantage” for your business today. Unlocking the Quantum Advantage for Businesses Part of the article that is discussed in this episode puts forward the long-term goal of reaching a “quantum advantage for materials, to utilize quantum computing to achieve capabilities that cannot be achieved on any super computer today.” While the possibilities are endless and it’s exciting to think about all the innovation that could happen when we reach that point, let’s not put the cart before the horse. We need to establish a foundation so that these futuristic tools can become a reality. If applied quantum algorithms continue to break down despite the complexity and sophistication with which they were made, then this means that researchers need to go back and reassess the technologies supporting it in the first place. Efficient Data Collection and Education How can TARTLE help businesses become more efficient with data collection? In this episode, Alexander shares how a local natural gas company in New Mexico sends out paper surveys in the mail. This company invests in this system and hopes that someone will take the time to diligently fill out their 15-question survey and mail it back to them. Investing in mail is expensive and it does not target the intended audience. Instead, they can digitize the survey and collect the information they need directly from the people who participate in that region with oil and gas. Beyond data collection, they can also increase awareness about their industry by embedding educational videos to teach people as they collect their data. What’s your data worth? It’s Time We Ring the Alarm: What Do the Bigwigs Do With Our Data?
One petabyte of information is equal to 500 billion pages of standard printed text. The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS), the EU’s watchdog, has made a shocking discovery: Europol has a data cache that’s at least four petabytes, filled with sensitive personal information that was unlawfully collected and held. Join Alexander and Jason as they discuss Europol’s massive, controversial data cache–and the disturbing implications of the institution’s actions. They’re Watching You Have you ever given a second thought about what it means to turn on your smartphone’s Location setting? Or what would happen if you clicked on Accept All Cookies whenever you entered a new website? Since most of us live as creatures of habit, our small decisions to use these settings and forget about them can have a big impact. Without your informed consent, they could plot out your entire schedule. Your favorite places to eat and hang out, the gym you go to, your workplace. Everything can be accessed and filed away. Europol is primed to become the center of machine learning and AI in policing. And yet, the bloc’s watchdog has uncovered a dark truth: that they have been unlawfully storing information secondary or tertiary to their investigations. Hacked data from encrypted phone services and information from asylum seekers who were never involved in any crime have been stowed away without the full, informed consent of those involved. Nobody is Safe It’s true: we need to trust that our government institutions have our best interests at heart. But if they can’t even be upfront about the amount of information they have on their citizens, then that leaves so much room for misuse and manipulation. In this episode, Jason narrates the story of Frank van der Linde. Van der Linde, a political activist, was placed on a terror watchlist in his native Netherlands and later removed. However, he had moved to Berlin before the removal and this prompted the Dutch police to share his data with their German counterparts and Europol. After discovering this, he attempted to have his personal data removed from any international databases. But Europol told him that they had nothing he was “entitled to have access to.” Van der Linde’s situation is a wake-up call to the harms associated with a lack of transparency. Behind his back, Europol shared his personal information with the German police. In the name of public security, it’s possible for police to share data with other police in other countries. But why is it so difficult to share this data with us? How quickly can we get persecuted for speaking the truth to power? Your data is worth your life. Find Out How Your Business Can Win at Data and Succeed Now
Automation, data collection, machine learning, and artificial intelligence was developed to make humanity more efficient. But in many ways, the complete opposite happens. When companies prioritize setting up multiple streams of data over investing in data management or data analytics, then the flood of data will eventually become overwhelming. It is crucial that businesses have a system and process for collecting, using, and managing data. IT and HR departments, in particular, face this issue the most. Plenty of teams do not have the expertise in data analytics to make the most out of the data being collected. There are so many tools for data collection, but the true utility of data is out of reach in many cases. Join Alexander and Jason as they question modern data collection methods, and how it can be improved to create a win-win situation for both businesses and their target audience. Is “Too Much Data” a Possibility? Imagine having data collection software that could track employee behavior, keystrokes, morale, and employee sentiments. Or having companies tap into Fitbits and Apple Watches so they can monitor your health and keep wellness costs done. Aside from the fact that this sounds like something out of George Orwell’s 1984, your target audience would want to know, at the very least, that all the data that’s being collected is being treated with dignity and respect. Today, data is an extension of an individual’s identity. It has information on personal habits, whereabouts, and relationships. Individuals must hold businesses, applications, and institutions to a higher level of accountability when it comes to managing personal data. On the other side of the coin, businesses need to invest in tools and platforms that respect the digital identity of their target audience. Treating Data With Respect Data analytics isn’t something that you should do on your own and it definitely isn’t something you should shoehorn into your HR or IT department. Instead of ingesting multiple streams at once and then cramming for solutions to overcome the flood, TARTLE gives businesses an avenue to go directly to the individuals who create these data streams and buy their information from them. TARTLE was built to give companies they need to source ethical data. There is no need to invest in third party programs and backdoor applications that disenfranchise either you or your audience. On TARTLE, everybody gets the compensation they deserve for working on their data. What’s your data worth? Sign up for TARTLE through this link here. Follow Alexander McCaig on Twitter and Linkedin.

The Mark of the Beast: Will the World End Because of Technology?
If you’ve ever been remotely interested in conspiracy theories, you may have heard of the one where technology will eventually innovate to a point where it becomes a vessel for the mark of the beast. The mark of the beast is a biblical term for a symbol for the Antichrist, or opposition to God. In this episode, Alexander and Jason discuss modern theories that parallel this mark to biometric scanning, barcode, and the implantable RFID chip. Renewed and Informed Consent in Data Collection Companies and governments using COVID-19 to collect biometric data on us and enforcing more data collection under the guise of public safety or convenience. This episode covers how often, companies assume that they can expand upon our initial consent for data collection. But consent needs to be renewed on a regular basis, especially as humanity explores new ways to collect and utilize data. The oversight on our daily activities goes beyond cameras. All the apps we invest in and all the platforms we use are watching us. And once we agree to have them collect our data, where will our personal information go? Ensuring Public Safety in a Free Society Do you only ever get either a free society or the assurance of public safety? Humanity has managed to progress, building safe and healthy societies for hundreds of years without the heavy surveillance that we experience today. Today, the right to control our digital information is an extension of our civil liberties. Sharing your data is not inherently bad and it doesn’t mean that only malicious actors will want your information. When you invest in platforms that recognize the hard work you put into generating all this data, you can get paid for it. You can choose who to sell your data to. And you can make sure that your hard work directly benefits institutions, actors, and entities that align with your personal values. What’s your data worth? Sign up for TARTLE through this link here. How Old is Old Enough? Collecting Data on Children in Gaming and Healthcare
Gillick competence refers to a child’s capacity to consent to their own medical treatment without their parents or guardians having to know or give their consent. But in an era where we are always giving out our personal information through our digital footprint, does this measure for consent still hold water? And if it applies to healthcare, why doesn’t it apply to other industries, like gaming? Join Alexander and Jason as they challenge today’s norms on parenting, data collection, and a child’s capacity to make informed decisions. Helicopter Parenting Human progress has reached a point where many of us are privileged to be living comfortable lives. However, this may have come at a cost: an increased aversion to taking risks, exploring freedom, and allowing independence. This extends to the way society believes parents should raise their children. Helicopter parenting, for the most part, does result in some short-term benefits. The constant surveillance means that children learn how to succeed in a closed environment. However, the reality is that parents won’t always be there to enforce a strict routine and study schedule. At some point, children need to be given the opportunity to explore the world at their own pace. Empowering the Next Generation Gillick competence can be established if the minor can demonstrate that they have “sufficient understanding and intelligence to fully understand what is proposed.” With all the fearmongering and biased media we consume on a daily basis, it can be easy to think of the worst of humanity. Allowing children to live, for as long as they can, away from making big decisions for themselves may seem like the smarter and more loving choice. But the way children are treated in their youth will leave indelible marks on the people they grow into. If we want to help empower children and raise independent adults, we need to give them the space and grace to make big decisions for themselves. As discussed in this episode, children are a lot more capable than we give them credit for. And the innate human desire to do the right thing, backed by statistics, indicates that the world is not as scary as we think it is. Helicopter parenting only serves to isolate children and hinder their personal development. Is it really empowerment if they only know how to succeed in a vacuum?
