Dr. Jeffrey Garber & Ms. Ronni Hochman on Thyroid Health Awareness

I'm chatting with Dr. Jeffrey Garber and his patient, Ms. Ronni Hochman today and we're discussing your thyroid health. Learn the signs and symptoms of this common health condition, thyroid disease. What is Thyroid Disease? Studies estimate that more than 10 percent of the general population suffer from thyroid disease. Hypothyroidism is a condition in which the thyroid produces less hormone than the body needs to maintain its normal functions, impacting virtually all organ systems. On the other side of the spectrum is hyperthyroidism, where the thyroid produces more hormone than the body needs. It causes symptoms that are pretty much the opposite of hypothyroid. Rapid weight loss, increased appetite, rapid heart beat, bowel changes, and more. How is it Treated? The standard treatment for hypothyroidism is an oral prescription pill that must be taken daily. If you've been diagnosed with a thyroid condition, you should work with your doctor to come up with a treatment plan. 011: Cholesterol Counts
February is heart health awareness month. One of the important risk factors for heart disease and heart attack is high cholesterol. It’s important to understand that all cholesterol is not created equal. Therefore, it is broken down into good and bad cholesterol. You can be proactive by visiting your primary care doctor and having your cholesterol checked. It is a simple battery of blood tests that typically include what’s known as a lipid profile. The results of the tests will include 4 numbers you need to know. Here are the individual tests and normal ranges you should fall within: Total cholesterol should be less than 200 mg/dL HDL-C (good cholesterol) should be higher the 40mg/dL for men and higher than 50mg/dL for women.
