S1E010 Want a Mr Miyagi
I hope you have enjoyed series 1 of the Tailor Made Career podcast. I’ve worked to make this first series a good mix of information and inspiration. I want there to enough to get the gears turning in your head and for you to be able to start taking some of the first steps. It’s time to begin your journey. This is your story and you are the hero. But here’s the truth that we all know. In every great story the hero faces obstacles and challenges that must be overcome. You are no different. Have you noticed that in so many great stories the hero has a mentor, a guide to find ways around the problems and obstacles? Luke Skywalker had Yoda. Daniel in The Karate Kid had Mr. Miyagi What about you. Do you crave a guide who has been down this same path before and knows the danger signs, knows how to find safe passage and the short cuts, knows who’s trustworthy and who’s not. I would be honoured to be your guide. but of course I can’t complete your journey for you. Only you can do that. but I can be here to show you where to draw strength to point you in the right direction the best time to have a map is before you go into the woods. so if you think that you and I might be good travelling partners communicate with me, tell me what’s on your mind what point of the journey are you at? This series 1 of the podcast is meant to be useful for you but also for me it is my vehicle to start connecting with you interacting with you listening to you finding out what you need so tell me tell me what you want what your concerns are worries and fears hopes and dreams because once I have heard from you got a sense of your needs I’ll start tailor making courses for you remember back in episode 4 I said don’t open a restaurant unless you’ve got a hungry crowd that’s exactly what I’m doing now I seeing what you are hungry for maybe there is no hunger for this that’s ok too because this is the testing process I have been alluding to I’m doing it right here, right now and all this will feed series 2 of this podcast as well which will be a different format series 2 you’ll be able to follow a

S1E009 Thanks Morgan and Cynthia
I’m here to tell you the folly of comparing yourself to other people. Now I get it, comparing yourself is human but it’s such a pointless exercise. A little bit of comparison yes, can be useful, but after that , it’s damaging. If you're running a race it's useful to look over your shoulders and get a sense of where your competitors are but you need to then get your eyes focused straight ahead and run your own race, cause if you don't focus on running your own race you will veer of course. Try it go out into a park pick a point to run to and then look continuously off to the side you’ll find yourself running that way. You run where you look. and you’ll find your self on a diversion and as we all know from being diverted in at roadworks it takes longer so if you are on your tailor made career journey and you start comparing yourself to others and trying to match them play their game apart from having your vital energy sucked dry as mark Twain said, ‘comparison is the death of joy’ you’re going to take longer to get to your goal which will in some way hurt you and your chances so if you must compare then compare yourself to last week’s version of yourself are you closer to new version of yourself the one you wrote about in your REAL ME CV or maybe you see you have stalled comparison here is useful comparing yourself against others not so How good would it have been to have a Mr Miyagi in your life? You know he shared all that wonderful insight to the young Daniel wax on wax off in the Karate Kid movie Now I’m no Mr Miyagi but I can point you in the right direction and I’ll tell you how in the next episode

S1E008 The 9 Year Curse
Success leaves clues. Like a little trail of breadcrumbs. Just keep following the trail of clues and you find some common truths, some characteristics successful people share ... and to be clear I’m not measuring success by the number of zeros on your bank balance. The metric I’m using is the ‘life’s good mate’. I measure it by a general sense of fulfilment. This is art not science. and I want to share with you a realisation I came to over decades of watching people I spent over a quarter century as a cameraman travelling around the world and I had what I call a ringside view of life. and because I worked mainly in long form factual TV ‘documentaries’ I got so close to a lot of people for extended lengths of time sometimes days weeks months and I saw, in many cases, intimately, what makes them tick. I met many successful people and many unsuccessful people. Over time I began to notice patterns in both successful and unsuccessful people. If you were to spend 3 hours a night, 2-3 days a week applying yourself to this you could start to shape your tailor made career that’s 300 hours over a year you would possibly already be earning some income you would definitely know so much more than you know right now you would be taking steps to future proof yourself because this knowledge can repurposed in so many online areas your head will start to fill with ideas and possibilities and best of all is that you start to wake up feeling ‘opportunity’ If you know anyone suffering the 9 year curse please share this episode A lot of people have trouble taking the first step. Are you stalled starting because you look at others and think you’re not as good as them and feel intimidated? I’m going to introduce you to Morgan and Cynthia in the next episode …

S1E007 Don’t Let Go of the Bars
What do you do when the going gets tough? What about you? Are there times that you could've kept going and made it through if you didn’t let go of the bars. and the whole reason I tell you this is because I am a podcast junkie. I have listened to thousands of them. I especially like ones about creating online business and I’m always looking out for patterns or what I call reading between the lines. and when it comes to entrepreneurial podcasts I have noticed a pattern: those who are successful by larger measure 9 out of 10 times talk about when they started back in 2002 or 2006 or 2009 there are very few overnight successes and they have all had times when they felt like letting go of the bars but they stuck with it and this gives me enormous confidence to keep going learning and refining and getting smarter Life is full of forces out there trying to stop us why add to their arsenal by sabotaging your own efforts and giving up but even with no guarantees and time and effort required to make this work there is something I just can’t get with other investments like real estate or shares I get a say I get a real say in this I get to steer this in the direction that feels right to me I get to call the shots and that for me is immensely rewarding self determination for me is an alluring drug Whether I make it financially bigger or not is of limited importance I gotta make money of course but that I’m active and invested and engaged and that you can create opportunity for yourself is where the real value is and for you the real value right now is that it is so easy to dip your toe in and test the waters It’s all just a series of steps I can teach you if you like all I want from you is a commitment that if you feel an inkling inside of you that you’re interested then just invest some time investigating this further Change can only come from 2 places outside of you or inside of you Outside is where you hope that someday someone or something w

S1E006 Perpetual Motion Formula
If you want to tailor make your own career that means over time there is going to be change in your life positive change, exciting change but change none the less ... and discipline is a system that drives change. Every day you have to do one thing different. That’s the key right there ... everyday. the key to cultivating discipline is building habits and we build habits by small changes day after day after day, gathering momentum, not stalling You know how you can utilise this Perpetual Motion formula today right now if you are looking at any online training courses that say 21 days to creating your online business or 6 weeks to rocking a new life they’re probably going to end in disappointment that’s like building sticks and straw houses I’m the third little pig who built his house of bricks I play the long game to me a handful of years to get me decades of fulfilment that’s a good deal and of course, of course there are going to be times you feel like giving up. I do. and when I do I say to myself ‘don’t let go of the bars’ the next episode is all about not giving up and staying in control of your destiny.

S1E005 The Motivation Lie
There’s bookshelves out there bowing under the weight of self help books. If you ever read one that says this: “It all starts with motivation, if you can just find your motivation then you’ll takes leaps and bounds forward on your chosen goal’ then close that book, put it down and ask for your money back. Because that book was written by either a robot, a 4 year old or someone who hasn’t really lived what they are promoting. Suggesting that people try and motivate themselves into starting is wrong. It’s unfair and it’s advice that can keep good and earnest and capable people from starting something that could have been really good in their lives. Here’s the simple truth. I’ve lived this and seen it with others literally hundreds, maybe even a thousand times. Motivation is not the starting point. The two D’s are. Desire and discipline. So you have 2 choices. Sit around and hope that burning desire shows up or start cultivating discipline and given that burning desire is as rare as a nun in a bikini I’m suggesting cultivating discipline is the way to go. and I’ve had to employ discipline every time I’ve changed careers I usually work on a five year transition plan and if you can master discipline your chance of creating a tailor made career becomes that bit more real How then do we cultivate discipline? I use the Perpetual Motion Formula and in the next episode I’m going to lay it all out for you.

“Leap and grow your wings on the way down.” There’s so much good about this classic quote by Les Brown..and there’s so much wrong with it. And I say this because I actually tried it and it wasn’t all clouds and rainbows. My wings didn’t unfurl and catch the winds I’ve got a better suggestion for you, granted, it’s not as poetic but it is very worthwhile you knowing about. It’s so easy to now to walk the tightrope of career change and not be worried about falling You can start moving towards a tailor made career while still having security You may find that you can stay in your current job and run an online business part time and that will work perfectly You may find you can go part time in your real job and part time online There are so many options available now You simply don’t have to leap and hope to grow your wings Now days, it is so easy to test any idea of you might have if you have an idea for creating an eBook let’s say on how to look after your elderly parents or a video training course on everything you know about making model sailboats To test these ideas It’s as simple as buying some Facebook ads and on the ad you say Are you suddenly faced with looking after elderly parents for the first time? Need help? then people click on this ad and it takes them to a simple website that you have made on this website is a form on that form it that says What’s the biggest struggle you are having right now looking after your ageing parents? let me help you. If people show interest and start asking you questions and giving you their email address to reply you know you’re onto something if not , then nows the time to abandon that idea and move onto another. This may sound simple and unsophisticated but that’s about it What I’ve just described could be done in one week for $100 compare that to the 2 years lead up and self destruction of my career that I did Again I have no regrets but had I known what I know now wha

S1E003 Mr Average's Incredible Journey
If I had succumbed to the stories in my own head that I wasn’t good enough or worthy enough or that I wasn’t like all the others already doing it, and believe me those are very real things that existed in my head, then none of these wonderful connections would have been made. So, no, you are not too old, you are not too different to everyone else, you are not too uncool, you are perfect the way you are. and you are definitely not too late. I hear people say that they should have been doing this 5 years ago. There’s already too many people doing this. That people won’t pay for knowledge anymore. Bunkum. It’s just getting going. No one can say something the way you can say something. Whatever it is that floats your boat, even if its been said hundreds of times before, the way you say it, the way you interpret it, the way your life experience impacts it, makes anything you say … original. and it makes the way you say it resonate with certain people. You will attract certain people and not others. You don’t want the others. When your people find you they will thank you and say where have you been. I’ve been waiting for you. What will you do with this opportunity? Whose lives will you impact? here’s the truth: your actions will inspire others, some where, some how and always when you least expect it. You just have to be yourself and want to somehow be useful and be of service to your fellow humans That’s the only qualifications you need to start creating your own tailor made career online. and if you come to a mighty canyon don’t leap and hope to grow your wings on the way down and I’ll share why in the next episode

S1E002 Jimmy’s Choice
Have you ever said one of these … or something close to it. 'You don’t understand, I’m stuck doing what I'm doing because it's beyond my control’. ‘I have no say in the matter, someone else controls this stuff’. ‘Hey, I’ve come too far down this path to turn back now’. ‘I wish it was different but it's outta my hands!’ Now I can’t speak for you but I have said things like that in my life or I should say I used to say things like that Then I met someone someone who taught me the distinction between I can’t change and I won’t change and this person showed me it was just a convenient excuse that I was hiding behind this person’s name was Jimmy da fuse Filliagi Meeting Jimmy on Death Row showed me we have so many choices - and the average person gets 10 million choices a year and all these choices are just opportunities in disguise opportunities for you to change the story of your life it call be as small a choice as vanilla ice cream or chocolate ice cream The point is we all have choices and that’s not to say that your situation isn’t difficult or tricky but we all have the power to influence the direction our lives take So I’ve given up making convenient excuses that I can’t do something I now know that 99% of the time it’s that I won’t do something So when you are thinking about what changes you would have to make to tailor make a career for yourself always ask I can’t or I won’t make changes? In the next episode you’re going to learn the two qualifications you need before you should even begin to think about tailor making a career online.
