This company is helping homeowners live in safer, more sustainable spaces!
Series 3, episode 1 of the Sustainability Champion’s Podcast! Introducing Jen & Rusty Stout, Co-Founders of Healthier Homes, a company that was ‘born out of necessity’’.  To understand the story of Healthier Homes, is to know the background for the inspiration behind Jen & Rusty’s work. In 2009, when working on her MBA, Jen discovered her health was deteriorating. The cause—hidden black mold in the walls of her new Dallas apartment.  The results from this were catastrophic on Jen’s health and well being.  During Jen’s recovery, and meeting her now husband Rusty, they were inspired to rethink how we build, furnish and live inside our homes. For both our health and the environment.  For many of us, especially during the pandemic, we spent much of our time indoors surrounded by a wide variety of chemicals. So Jen & Rusty are building and decorating homes and hoping to inspire other contractors and homeowners to make smart building choices. This starts from the construction and goes to fixtures, home furnishings and more. With a combination of their book, ‘Healthier Homes’ and their online shop which sells eco-friendly, sustainable home products, Jen & Rusty are on a mission to educate audiences on the issues poor buildings and home products can have on our health.  ‘All the beauty minus any of the harsh chemicals’.  To learn more Healthier Homes, simply click the link in our bio! This week’s podcast guests as we start a NEW series features Jen & Rusty from healthier Homes./ In what was an insightful and unique conversation, the first episode of our new series is live this Wednesday. These authors have created a complete guide to small-scale homesteading!
Women In Sustainability Series, episode 6.  Introducing Stephanie & Michelle, the Authors of the book ‘Small-Scale Homesteading’. With over thirty-five years of combined experience, homesteaders Stephanie Thurow and Michelle Bruhn have taught thousands of people across the globe how to garden, preserve food, tend backyard chickens, cook from scratch and care for their families with natural home alternatives.  Now, their homesteading knowledge and instructions can be found in one place in their new book!  You might be asking - What is ‘Homesteading’? Homesteading is the term given to a lifestyle of self-sufficiency. It is characterised by subsistence agriculture, home preservation of food, and among other things.  Many of us want to be more self-sufficient, while also providing a more nutritious lifestyle for our loved ones. Books like Stephanie and Michelle’s offer us a guide to live more sustainably while learning how to grow our own foods, tap maple trees to make homemade syrup and maybe even successfully raise a small flock of egg-laying hens! There are many sustainable advantages to homesteading—from soil health to avoiding food waste, to name a couple—and homesteading is a growing trend amongst those of us trying to lead a more sustainable lifestyle.  That’s why we invited Stephanie & Michelle onto our podcast to be part of this series and to share their knowledge and insights and introduce some of our audience to a homesteading way of life! This woman repurposes old garments and materials to make hand-made luxury pillows!
Women In Sustainability Series, episode 3.🎙 Introducing Cate Brown, Founder of Cate Brown Design, a design studio located in New York that creates sustainably sourced, hand-selected objects of finery to make luxury pillows for clients around the world.  The team at Cate Brown Design are offering an alternative to the fast-fashion approach to homewares and celebrating reclaimed luxury craft. You might ask ‘Why is it essential to repurpose or reuse materials, especially for pillows?’ In the United States alone, an estimated 11.3 million tons of textile waste—equivalent to 85% of all textiles—end up in landfills every year.  Fast fashion has created an industry focused on quantity over quality—with consumers buying pieces that they only wear a handful of times and then end up in our already-overfilled landfills.  Something needs to be done to address the environmental impacts fast fashion is having on our planet.    We love showcasing champions who creatively solve this challenge by making unique designs and products from materials that already exist within the industry. Form curricular approaches from Sumedhaa at By.Sume for clothing to Cate Brown Design for luxury, handcrafted pillows.  With all their products designed in-house and produced by skilled seamstress Cate Brown, Cate Brown Design’s pieces are designed and made locally in Brooklyn, New York, and Vancouver. With Cate’s products stocked in some of the best-known retail stores—and used in many hotels—her pillows are finding a new use for garments that otherwise would be discarded! In this week’s episode, we speak with Cate Brown to learn about the environmental impacts fast fashion is having on our environment and how a more creative approach to circular designs is needed to address the problem. We also learn more about her design studio, her team, and the brand she has created. This women’s cosmetics brand is cruelty free and vegan!
Women In Sustainability Series, episode 2.🎙 Introducing Christina Flach, the Founder and CEO of Pretty Girl MakeUp and Beauty Expert on NBC. Christina’s brand, Pretty Girl MakeUp, was founded in 1996 as she looked to create a better product for both herself, her clients, and customers.  She could never find a high quality lip gloss that would last after application throughout her busiest days. Every gloss she tried and was referred to would seemingly disappear within an hour of application or a sip of water. After trying a dozen products, Christina decided to fix the problem herself–and after a year of formulation, Pretty Girl MakeUp was born.  Christina wanted to do more than just create another lifestyle and cosmetic brand. Christina wanted her brand to resemble her beliefs. From the quality of the product, to how the product is made and even packaged, Christina created something for more than a lifestyle product–she challenged the cosmetics industry to do better.  From skin and eye products, many cosmetic brands use animal testing–something that has been condemned by many animal rights groups and consumers. As such, Christina wanted her brand to be different and take a stand against this. So all of her products at Pretty Girl Makeup are cruelty free.  What’s more, as Pretty Girl Makeup grows, Christina is developing new brands and products. With her business growth, she continues to look for ways to reduce waste in the packaging and postal of her products by using less material and biodegradable packaging. This episode covers some interesting topics–from understanding more about her approach to health & lifestyle, living more sustainably, creating a brand and businesses with sustainable practices and goals, to also defining a ‘vegan’ cosmetic product! This man is on a mission to make his products from 100% ocean-bound plastics by the end of 2023!
Series 2, episode 7 of the Sustainability Champions Podcast 🎙 Introducing Ben Ridding, the Founder of Ulu, a company formed because of Ben’s love for the sea. Ulu makes waterproof backpacks and tow floats with the mission to make all of its products from 100% ocean-bound plastics. So, why does the ocean matter? When we think about the issues we face as a result of climate change, it’s important to remember that our oceans need to be clean and protected to avoid the most severe issues that climate change is causing globally. Our oceans feed us, regulate our climate, and generate much of the oxygen that we breathe. We sometimes overlook the need for a clean and protected ocean when we think about sustainability. But for many people, the ocean is their playground, where they go to escape life's challenges and reconnect with nature. Ben does not necessarily consider himself a ‘Sustainability Champion,’ but rather someone who is eco-conscious, using common sense to make a small change to address a major crisis. In this episode, Ben discusses how he plans to make all of his products from 100% ocean-bound plastic. This is how he and the team at Ulu ensure they are making a real difference when it comes to protecting the ocean from plastic. In this episode we discuss the plastic pollution crisis, what brands and people can do to address this problem, ‘greenwashing’ - or falsely advertising a brand is sustainable - and how Ben is trying to create awareness by educating consumers, people and manufacturers.
