What are Thought Prisons and Mental Strongholds? They are the negative and sabotaging thoughts that create feelings that sidetrack and derail you. Mind Viruses - The 7 Deadly Venoms
Perspective is everything. It’s your mental view and it acts as both a bridge and a barricade to your future. Your perspective is a lens and filter through which you view the world and interpret events. What that means is that what you are looking at isn’t what you actually see, and what is happening isn’t what you are experiencing. What we see and what we experience is depended on our perspectives and mental filters. Now here’s where today’s podcast episode comes in. I have found that there 7 perspectives, that I call mind viruses, the 7 deadly venoms that sabotage us from the inside our minds. These mind viruses prevent us from making progress and leading productive lives. Each of these mind viruses in the form of the 7 deadly venoms also have a certain emotions attached to them and a certain ways they manifest in our lives. In today’s podcast we look at these mind viruses and breakdown each of the 7 deadly venoms of the mind to include the emotions attached to them and how they manifest. We will then wrap it up with some alternative mental choices to act as anti-venom (if you will) to those 7 deadline venoms. Overcoming Fear - Winners Therapy To Overcome FUD
Is overcoming fear, dealing with uncertainty, overcoming self-doubt something you have been wanting do to? If so, I get it because living a life that is intoxicated with fear, uncertainty, and doubt is perhaps the #1 one reason why most people don’t realize their true potential. If that’s you then you want to listen to today’s episode immediately because we will look at overcoming fear, dealing with uncertainty, and overcoming self-doubt with what I call “the winner’s therapy.” To get you into the right frame of mind before listening to the episode, I want to give you a scenario to introduce the concept of negativity using an example that relates to alcohol and being intoxicated. Imagine for a moment a very good family man, who is a loving husband and caring father. It’s a Friday evening and after a long week, he’s going for a night out with his friends. He kisses his wife and kids and then heads for the bar to meet up with his friends. One drink turns to two and then four and continues until he’s ready to come home. He gets into his car, completely intoxicated. He begins to drive. He doesn’t get too far before he’s pulled over by the police. He’s asked to step out of the car and asked to perform the usual checks. He’s asked to touch his nose but he can’t even find his nose. He’s asked to walk in a straight line and can’t do that either. He’s asked to take the breathalyzer test and he’s actually so drunk he doesn’t know who he is or what he’s doing. Thankfully this man was pulled over by the police because there could have been another outcome. Somebody could have been killed, he could have been killed. Now, he is not a bad man, he is a good family man but he got intoxicated. Now, I want to ask you this question. Are you intoxicated? No, I’m not talking about alcohol intoxication… I’m talking about your thoughts and your negativity level. Are you intoxicated with negative thoughts? Negativity can cause the similar effects as being drunk. You’ll be off balance and unable to find the nose on your face. Driving your life drunk with fear, uncertainty, and doubt is a sure-fire way to crash into what you don’t want… it’s a dream killer. Unfortunately, many people have high toxic levels of fear, uncertainty, and doubt. Fear is disorienting and distorts what’s possible while uncertainty and doubt can suffocate your ability to think clearly and act productively. There are doors to your future that only faith, certainty, and confidence can unlock. Stephen Pierce on 6 Actions That Can Change Your Life
Change Your Life with These Six Types Of Success Actions Today’s episode is going to discuss the different types of actions that are available that can change your life and accelerate your success. There is so much more to taking action than just going out and doing something and that’s what the focus of this episode is all about. Let’s Talk About Cause and Effect Actions can be put into different categories with the understanding that if you take a certain action you’ll achieve a certain result. The action can cause a problem or it can cause an opportunity and you generally don’t take an action that is going to cause a problem. Every problem and opportunity has some kind of effect associated with it. There are things you need to take into consideration when dealing with cause and effect. For example, planting an acorn is supposed to equal an oak tree. This is the cause and effect, but if you plant an acorn in the desert you’re not going to get an oak tree. What I want to focus on is particular actions that relate to ‘cause problems and effects’ and ‘opportunities and effects’. Hindsight is 20/20 When you consider hindsight you’re looking at an action you took that caused something to happen. This action may have caused a certain problem and you had to take what is called a corrective action. You can change your life by taking a corrective action to make sure you don’t repeat or start developing a pattern. One of the first actions you need to take is corrective action. If you look in hindsight and you see there is a certain effect that has already taken place because of something you’ve done or something someone else has done, you’ll need to take what is called an adaptive action. You can change your life by taking an action to adapt to certain effects that have already taken place. An example of an adaptive action that you see all the time are changes in technology and the internet. Corrective action and adaptive action are two actions you use based on hindsight and the can change your life. To summarize you use corrective action to prevent that cause from happening again and you use adaptive action to adapt to what is changing in your environment based on effects that have taken place. There are other actions you need to look at also. You can look into the future and take preventative action. This is where you ensure certain things won’t happen. You can also take contingency action. Contingency action can change your life because it’s based on foresight and taking action on what might happen. Below is an example of contingency action. You walk into an office building and you see a no smoking sign. In terms of action, the no smoking sign is a preventative action. It is to prevent people from smoking in the building and causing a fire. If someone decided they were going to smoke in the building and a fire took place, there are fire extinguishers in the building. The existence of the fire extinguishers is the contingency action. What if the fire took place? The existence of automatic sprinklers is an example of adaptive action because the environment will automatically adapt to the fire and smoke in the building and trigger the sprinklers. There are two more actions that can change your life that I want to discuss and these are promoting actions and exploiting actions. Promoting actions are something that you proactively and deliberately do to promote an opportunity of some kind. This could be to sell a product, generate more sales, get more customers or more partners. Promoting action is where you take a specific action while looking to promote an opportunity. When you look at the opportunity, what are the effects of the opportunity that you can actually exploit? Exploiting action, in this instance, is in a positive way. Look at Disney for example. Disney puts out a movie and if the movie does really well, they exploit the movie. The characters from the movie show up in Disneyland and in stores with products ranging from coloring books, action figures, clothing and more. Athletes are another good example of this. Athletes who have top performances are exploited by different marketing companies. Michael Jordan was exploited by Nike. Maria Sharapova is exploited by Canon. What it all means is that you get the maximum mileage out of the opportunity and the effects of the opportunity. It is not a negative thing when we use exploiting actions. You use proactive action to promote an opportunity and then you use exploiting action on its effects. Again, let’s look at sports. Nike didn’t create Michael Jordan. He used promoting action to put him into the superstar category. The marketing companies then arrived on the scene to exploit his prestige, to exploit his image and to exploit his top performance for the benefit of helping them grow their own companies. Now you have six different actions that you can use to change your life: Change your life with Corrective actions Change your life with Adaptive actions Change your life with Preventative actions Change your life with Contingency actions Change your life with Promoting actions Change your life with Exploiting actions Corrective actions are actions that you choose to make sure you don’t create the same cause over again. These actions are based on hindsight. Adaptive actions are actions that you choose to adjust and adapt to certain effects that have already taken place. Both of these actions are based on hindsight. Preventative actions are actions to prevent a certain cause from happening. Contingency actions are actions that are based on the ‘what if’. Both of these actions are based on foresight or looking into the future. Promoting actions are actions that look to create opportunities that you can then leverage using exploiting actions. Can you see how all these actions are tied together and how you can use them for your business success? It is not just one specific action that you need to take but several different kinds of actions depending on what is happening. We all interact with our environment. We interact with other people and if you can understand that you’re not limited to certain things and that you do have a selection of actions you can take relative to what is going on, then you can better exploit the things that are going on. You can also better adjust to things and have tremendous success in your life. In the context of success actions and how they relate to your circumstances, please review and answer these 10 questions. When considering what action to take in your business do you look at the effects before choosing the action? In relation to your business success what corrective actions could you now put in place? What adaptive actions could you choose to take to ensure your business success? Looking towards your future success what preventative actions do you need to take? Again looking towards your future success, what contingency actions should you take? What promoting actions can you take right now in your business to ensure success? Are there any exploiting actions that you can take right now to further your success? Taking a good look at your business and personal life what actions do you need to take to make things work? How can you tie all 6 actions together to formulate an action plan that will inevitably lead to your success? What is the very first action you’re going to take right now? C Edward Moten - Success in an Untapped Market
On today’s show, we’re going to be flying high with C Edward Moten, a cutting-edge entrepreneur and a servant for safe and luxurious travel. Ed is CEO of Dominion Charter Ltd, a company that was birthed about eight years ago. His ability to understand seamless travel put the company in a position to facilitate exceptional travel for those in business while giving more time to the perfection of the process. Being a history buff, Ed set out to ensure that for clients of Dominion Charter Ltd, time management would lead to life management. The focus became the process of spending more human capital much better for better results at home, as well as in the boardroom. Ed has an extensive theological training and he once thought that theology would be his lot in life. The most significant thing for Ed at this point in his life is seeking to solve problems with travel, one client at a time, and it should be noted that Ed owns one of the few minority-owned charter jet companies. Years ago, while working as a paralegal, Ed learned the importance of the best you and today, we’re going to learn from him what that means. [00:02:15] The Difference between a Polished Person and a Progressive Person When you’re polished, it gives the assumption that you have arrived, and when you have that attitude, you plateau. On the other hand, when you’re progressive, you understand that opportunity is always evolving, and opportunity gets greater as you evolve. To progress, you can learn by watching others, learn by reading, and make sure you stay connected to what works. [00:08:41] If You Want to Seize the Opportunity, You Must Die to Self Ed had to learn to give up his inclination to a comparative conversation in order to be open to opportunities. We sometimes get set in ways that paralyze us from recognizing or pursuing new opportunities. [00:11:57] It Takes Wisdom to Unhook Yourself from Destructive Tendencies Begin with being honest with yourself, recognizing both the good and bad in you, and decide what you want to change about yourself in pursuit of progress. To accept the truth is to understand that truth is a fact, no matter how you feel about it. And it will be that fact, whether you like it or shrink back from it. There are four steps to unhooking yourself: Acknowledge truth Accept truth Articulate truth Authenticate truth [00:20:07] Getting to Self-Honesty People won’t always give an honest opinion because they are being sensitive to your relationship. They might give a more positive opinion than you need at the time or one that is more negative than you need, based on the temperature of your relationship, and it can be dangerous. [00:29:04] Dealing with Stress, Strain, and Struggle When It Comes to Business Ed deals with stress, strain and struggle by focusing on his desired end for being in business. No matter what he sees or experiences, it does not distract him from that desired end. He knows that conflicts will come because they are part of the process, and he has learned that you don’t always have to open your mouth and defend yourself. As scripture says, even a fool, when he holds his peace, is counted wise! [00:33:59] It’s a Routine but Is It Right? If somebody else’s routine works for them, that’s great. But if that routine does not yield to you what it yielded to them, before you beat yourself up over it, reroute yourself. Look only for the principles in the routine that are right and then apply them. [00:38:51] Have an Affirming and Positive Outlet When You’re Discouraged Any person who feels that they will advance without obstacles, opponents, or any odds, is fooling themselves. 7 Barriers To Success and How To Overcome Them
Today, I want to talk about seven barriers to success because I believe understanding these barriers is critical to you becoming successful. So, if you want to identify these barriers to success that could be holding you back and want to understand how to break through any of these barriers to success, then click play and let’s get to it. [00:00:45] Barriers to Success #1: Being Reasonable Being reasonable means going for what we think we can get versus what it is we really want. Just because you haven’t accomplished that thing yet doesn’t mean you can’t accomplish it, and just because you haven’t done it before, doesn’t mean you can’t do it. There’s a difference between possibilities and probabilities. Anything is possible, but what is “probable” depends on what you are doing now. Focus on increasing the probabilities and don’t mind what other people think is realistic. Dare to be unreasonable. [00:08:59] Barriers to Success #2: More of the Same We want to make sure that what we are doing is what we should be doing. Continuing to do more of what we’ve done before is not necessarily the right thing. Remember that things are constantly shifting around us, so what worked before does not guarantee success today. Think about companies like Pan American Airlines and Blockbuster which were once market leaders. They got caught up in doing more of the same and lost their position. Step back and evaluate where you are now and where you want to be in a few months or years. Do you need to do things differently or do you need to do different things? [00:17:56] Barriers to Success #3: Doubt Doubt means believing in your limits instead of your unlimited potential. Granted, we’re influenced by environments, by people, personalities, and attitudes, and sometimes we can become influenced by what happened in our past. But once you set your mind and energy on something, doubt is an abuse of your belief system. In fact, it’s a personal abuse because we’re the ones that choose our doubts. The antidote is to have faith. Start by looking backward on what you have already accomplished in life and all the skills you have acquired along the way. Choose to have faith that you have what it takes to achieve your goals. [00:28:17] Barriers to Success #4: Faith in The Familiar We find comfort in old routines yet if we want a new result, we must be prepared to get out of our comfort zone. Even if you’re happy with the same result, you have to know when it’s necessary to change. In 2007, 2008, 2009, people were continuing to do the familiar; getting up, going to work, doing their jobs, but they got laid off. Something had changed dramatically, and it was out of their control. Comfort, like procrastination, is hypnotic but what makes you comfortable is not what’s going to make you great. Decide where you want to go. [00:32:42] Barriers to Success #5: Picking the wrong risk Risks are inevitable in life. When you risk being in love, you risk being hurt. When you risk winning, you risk losing. The question is, will this risk move me towards my goals, vision, and mission, or is it going to keep me defending what it is that I have? Where there is a small risk, there is probably only small rewards and small winnings. Use your intelligence and get proper counsel but go out there and risk it all to win it all. You’ve got one life, don’t put it on the shelf because you’re afraid of losses. [00:35:55] Barriers to Success #6: Passivity There are those that want to succeed, and then there are those that refuse to live without it. Those that only want success are relaxed in their comfort zone, talking about it, wishing and wanting, but not rolling up their sleeves to “put their belly to the bar.” You can believe in the law of attraction, but without work, no amount of speaking will bring success into existence. It’s okay to have a vision, a mental image as a blueprint for your goals. In fact, it is necessary to have that image to help you plan. But then you have to get to work to achieve it. [00:41:20] Barriers to Success #7: Preparation Preparation is not bad! But planning and preparing for too long turns into procrastination. Every plan that you expect to execute is an assumption that it will work and the only way to prove our assumptions right or wrong is to take action. It’s great to have coaches, mentors, consultants, or go to seminars, read books and listen to shows like this, but action is your biggest teacher. A seed in a drawer will always remain a seed and never becomes the harvest. Go out there, plant yourself with action, and produce the harvest that you can produce, by overcoming these seven barriers to success. Dr. Troy Nash - Investing in Yourself to Succeed
Today’s guest is unlike no other and we’re glad to have him on the show. Dr. Troy Nash came up the hard way. He rose from a poor inner-city street kid living in public housing on welfare with no father in the home, to becoming a two-term city councilman in Missouri, traveling to nearly 40 countries around the world promoting humanitarian, educational, and cultural exchanges, earning six advanced degrees including a doctorate in education, an MBA, and a law degree, to becoming the first African American executive named partner/shareholder in a top commercial real estate firm in the history of the State of Missouri. In this interview, you’ll learn the inspiring story on how education helped him to become who he is today despite his background, how he started changing his community starting with his three older brothers, and how to break free from your where you are now to a life of success despite the various barriers that may come your way. Everything starts with YOU. Troy started to change when he got tired of ‘everything’. [03:31] What did he do differently that allowed him to become what he is today despite his background He challenged the conventional wisdom and he got tired of the stigma where an African American is associated with criminality. The US Airforce was his way out and being in the military taught him education. After being back from service, he along with his 3 older brothers converted his little ‘ghetto house’ into a school by helping his brothers with their GED scores. He enrolled his 3 older brothers to college for the very first time and recruited hundreds of people from his community. [13:12] How to reprogram the mind to get in the direction you want You must put in the conscious, deliberate effort to improve yourself. Part of improving yourself is surrounding yourself with people who have dreams, hopes, and ambitions. Sometimes, you’re gonna find yourself alone and if you can deal with it, then you’re on your way to success. [16:00] How to focus in world that is socially distracting “You have to write your own story”. He was given an opportunity and grabbed it! Anybody can do it, but the reality is there are barriers to it like racism, jealousy hate, envy, etc. that you must deal with on your road to success. [18:42] How to overcome the fear of overcoming barriers that scares them like disapproval, biases, racism, etc. According to Dr. Troy, it’s about manipulating your subconscious mind. He did it by changing the environment he’s in. He listened to inspirational things, surrounded himself with positive people. [22:08] How to break free from ‘addiction’ so they can start manipulating your subconscious mind while ‘gravity’ is pulling them from the negative Based on his limited experience, what worked for him is about thinking differently and changing his habits. Drenching yourself to change is necessary. He shared a story and the gist of it is about taking small steps and being consistent with it until it becomes a habit. Whenever the temptation kicks in, focus your mind on the negative or the pain that it will cause you. [28:20] How to persevere in times of trouble when pain is the negative pain (like divorce, or betrayal which he went through) When he was going through a divorce or other troubles he’d been through, seeking knowledge became his coping mechanism. He turned to reading books and it allowed him to escape in a world that’s beyond his physical environment. As he got older, he adopted the philosophy of “this too shall pass”. When things happened to him now, he enjoys it because it gives him an opportunity to challenge himself. [34:57] How to become more honest with ourselves You have to find your passion and not worry about what others will say. [37:40] Dr. Troy’s daily ritual to keep him on track The key here is consistency. He shared his daily routine where he starts his day with positive stuff by sharing positive messages on social media (He thought of sharing positive messages on social media for a year and it blew up and compiled it into a book and other opportunities). After that, he goes through the normal routine of an entrepreneur and a real estate business executive; and when he gets home, that’s when he does his passion projects. In this episode, Bo Porter will coach you on Leadership Secrets from Major League Baseball and how they relate to real life issues. Bo Porter’s Bio Bo Porter is currently the special assistant to GM and former third base/outfield and baserunning coach for the Atlanta Braves of Major League Baseball. Bo was also the manager of the Huston Astros. Bo drafted for the Cubs in 1993. He played for the Cubs, Oakland A’s and the Texas Rangers. He was also a coach for the Miami Marlins, Arizona Diamondbacks, Washington Nationals and the Atlanta Braves. At the age of 39, Porter was named Manager of the Houston Astros making him the youngest manager in MLB history and was named special assistant general manager of the Atlanta Braves in 2016. Bo Porter is the founder and chairman of the board for the Stacey and Bo Porter Self Foundation, founding president of Real Excellence inc, CEO of Bo Porter Enterprises and author of two books; Real Life Empowered and The End Game. He explains that passion is his greatest strength and his greatest weakness. He says you have to understand the situation. In this instance, as an MLB manager, a sort of father figure or protector of the 25 men on the team that he has been charged to lead, you have to stand up for your players. You have to make them feel protected. Which means sometimes taking a bullet to show the team and the league that you have to stand up for what’s right. (5:10-9:25) One of the most important aspects of being a leader is you have to connect with the people you are charged to lead. There will come a time when you have to engage and the engagement can become confrontational but if you take the time to connect, a relationship can form. Having emotional sensitivity, especially in business, can help you get your point across without creating conflict. No matter the setting, at the end of the day, it’s about relationships and interactions with people. Expanding Your Comfort Zones (9:25-12:35) Expanding outside of our comfort zone is where growth really happens. Understanding your job as a leader is paramount. Being a great leader is making sure everyone you’ve been charged with reaches their potential. You have to look at skillsets, ability to deal with success and failure and come up with how to collectively best motivate your team. Leadership is not about the title it’s about the actions you take to help people reach their full potential. (12:35-19:15) As a leader, you have to show your team that you care more about them than you do about yourself. By being a leader you have to set a certain standard. Derek Jeter’s career leadership over the Yankees is used as an example. Enthusiasm and taking care of yourself are ways of showing that you can take care of others. Leadership Lessons From Bo Porter’s Book (19:15-20:22) Bo’s book, Real Life Empowered focuses on nine core values of personal leadership development which include education, manners, physical activity, open-mindedness, well-balanced nutrition, expression of positive attitudes, relationships, enrichment of spirit and dedication. (20:22-24:00) Lead by example – actions speak louder than words. Lead with honesty – false confidence is worse than low confidence. (24:00-29:20) And every team member needs to give 100%, including the leader. Your job as the leader is to build the people so the people can build the coaches. Having the right team makes the difference. The team embodies the coach and the winning attitude of the coach so much that the coach doesn’t have to direct the players, they can check each other. (29:20-34:00) Visual aids are important. Showing your team the positive and negative scenarios can help your team grow. Knowing what not to do is just as important as knowing the right thing to do. (34:00-38:25) There are two types of people; the people who try their hardest every day no matter what and the people who don’t try as hard after they’ve reached their goals. It is paramount to show up every day with the notion that you will be the best and do the best you can do. Application is the true definition of knowing. (38:25-48:10) Never make exceptions during preparations that matter to your ultimate outcome. That exception could come up down the road and affect your eventual goal. Be forward with your team members, cover all bases, give them options. Exercise compassion while serving discipline. Send a message to the whole team while disciplining. Make teachable moments. (48:10-53:00) As a leader, you can try your hardest but sometimes you can’t please everyone. A message is only as good as the receiver. Both sides need to be heard in order for a message to come across. Leaders try to help you transform into your better self. Again, it is uncomfortable to be comfortable. We can’t lessen our ability to deliver based on an audience that doesn’t want to receive. (53:00-56:10) Sports is an institution of higher learning. The reason people are successful is that they’ve learned how to overcome failure. Essentially you have to fall down to get back up. Key’s to Bo Porter’s Success I developed fortitude. I was willing to adapt. I use my imagination to dream big. I learned from everyone with whom I shared space. Enthusiasm was a choice I made daily. I realize discipline in all areas of life is a common denominator to real excellence. (56:10-59:00) You can do everything right in a game and still lose. Perseverance is one of the most important aspects of sports (and life). Some of the characteristics you build from playing sports you can’t find in a classroom. The mental toughness, perseverance, resilience, etc. The best teams are built of the people who are willing to give of themselves for the benefit of the team.
