SSP 22 – Let’s talk Nutrition and Diet – Calories, Macros, Food Exclusions
Nutrition and Diet Nutrition and Diet is one of those things man. One of those things that everyone has an opinion on and everyone is willing to give advice on. Before you listen in know that we aren't nutrition experts! But we have done our research and we have been around the block in this field a bit. We talk about the number one most important thing in achieving a desired body composition - fat loss, muscle gain, performance, etc. That number one thing is calories. You have to have an idea of how many calories you consume on any given day and you have to have an idea of how many calories you should consume to achieve whatever your goal is. It's that simple. That's 90-98% of the work right there. After that, lets have an idea of what macronutrients are. Carbs, Proteins, and Fats, If you have all that dialed in you're pretty good to go and it just takes applying that knowledge to your diet to achieve your goal physique or performance. SSP: 20 Injuries, Setbacks, Finding Excitement
I think we can all agree that injuries and setbacks suck. A BAD injury might keep you out for a month which can seem extremely long but how long is a month in the grand scheme? It's a tiny percent of your over all training time. In this episode we get into dealing with setbacks. Why it's so important to have other interests and passions in life besides training. The word passion is something everyone knows but finding your passion is a pretty hard task. Maybe all passions really means is excitment. Find something that excites you outside of the gym and you will be a much more well rounded person. Check us out at StrengthSide.com or on YouTube ! SSP: 19 All About SQUATS
Everyone should squat. Squatting builds the body powerfully and creates great structure. Squats build the hips and torso (abs and spine) which is the basis of creating good posture in everyday life. The squat carries over to athletic performance arguably better than any other movement. Build a strong squat, move better on the field or court. Most people should squat everyday! Yes everyday. You don't necessarily have to load your squat everyday, just getting into a bodyweight squat position will suffice. A great progression for learning to squat is to box squat, bodyweight squat, goblet squat, barbell squat. At the end of the day squatting is squatting. No matter if you're back squatting 400 pounds or goblet squatting with a 25 pound dumbbell, you will be a healthier, stronger, individual with better postural integrity. So as we dive into this great topic of SQUATS, we cover the What, Why, When, How, and Where's of Squats. No matter if you're a beginner or advanced tune in and join us for some fun conversation. SSP: 18 Ryan Saga – Taking Risks, Facing Fear
Sometimes comfortable is the biggest enemy of life. Taking risks will get you out of the comfort zone. Facing fears along the way. We talk to our buddy and athlete Ryan McCardy about his path so far in life. Ryan had a good job coming out of High School and made a good living for himself. He had the house, the girlfriend, the big truck, extra spending money, the American Dream right? Some would think, but eventually he came to the conclusion that something wasn't right. He found waking up in the morning to go slave away at his job was getting harder and harder and he was not enjoying life as he should. He decided to leave his comfortable life where money was no worry and pursue a passion that started for him back in High School - Fitness and Strength Training. He was not guaranteed anything in this line of work but he still took the leap of faith. Take Risks, Face Fears. He talks about his learning experiences, how much seeking out knowledge and good mentors has helped him, and how it has effected his own training and workouts. This is a fun and motivating show and a lesson to all of us that happiness and fulfillment could be just around that next risk or fear that's in the way. SSP: 17 Training Athletes – Power, Performance, and Sport
Training Athletes is sometimes made too complicated. In this episode we discuss how athletes should train for their sport. Training Athletes can be basic, the average athlete needs to increase strength in the main lifts to become more powerful in order to increase performance. The "main movements" should be prioritized before anything else.: Squat, Deadlift, Pressing, and Pulling. This should never change too much. Athletic training should enhance the performance on the field. You get stronger in the gym in order to be more powerful when practicing your sport. Topics discussed include: Getting Stronger Sports Specific Exercises Olympic Lifts Expressing Power Vs. Gaining Power Unilateral Exercises Speed General Purpose Training Mobility The general public, or the every day man, should really take some training advice from the Athlete. The athlete goes into the gym to get their body stronger, more powerful, and ready to perform better at their sport. Most people fall victim to thinking they need to train specific parts of their body, or in specific ways. There should really be only small differences in the way an athlete and your average 9-5er trains. Don't play a sport? Life is sport! Train your body to perform well in life. SSP: 14 Mobility and Motor Control
Is it a Mobility, Motor Control, or Strength problem? We find that most people jump to strength but mobility and motor control are things that should probably be addressed first. We talk all about the controversial issue of mobility. Why do it? How much? When do you need to do it? And when does it become a negative? We find that most coaches and athletes have some type of philosophy and bias towards mobility. If you already have the ability to move through full ranges of motion and you are still not performing well then it is probably a motor control problem.
