Rick training Jiu Jitsu at Stout PGH – Team Renzo Gracie   This podcast guest is someone that most people have not heard of.  He isn’t a Jiu Jitsu celebrity or coach.  Rick is an insurance professional in his 50s who is battling cancer.  He has been a long-time supporter of the Local Jiu Jitsu, Muay Thai, and MMA scene in Pittsburgh.  He has supported Stout Fights events via sponsorship since our first event 3 years ago.  His insurance company  The Thompson Gusic Insurance Group specializes in insuring extreme sports businesses and participants among other things. He’s also an inspiration at Stout PGH – Team Renzo Gracie.  For many of the past months he’d be on the mats training with a special chest shield that protected his chemo port.  In the podcast we talk about what its like starting Jiu Jitsu later in life and being one of the older people on the mats.  We talk about training through Cancer and why Rick feels his mat time has helped him.  We discuss the perspective shift that happens when you get a diagnosis of cancer and living with it day to day.  We discuss some of the non-obvious benefits of Jiu Jitsu training.  This is a powerful podcast and there are takeaways for everyone.  There are some heavy subjects but Rick manages to keep it light and fun. Neuroscientist / Cell biologist Dr. Randy Stout on learning, brain injuries and more
Dr Randy Stout at his lab In this podcast our guest is Brain researcher, Neuroscientist, and Cell biologist Dr. Randy Stout.  He currently works at the NY Institute of technology. He received his PHD from the University of Alabama, Birmingham, and did post doctorate work at Einstein College of Medicine.  Currently he is studying the blood brain barrier and it’s interactions concerning brain injuries.  He is a published scientist doing “basic” research which mean he studies the workings of the brain itself at cellular levels.  This can be contrasted with studying clinical trials of drug interactions for example. His research is concerned with why the brain works as it does.   He talks about how being successful in research has some of the same elements as MMA and other combat sports.  He talks about theories on how we learn and give a few tips on how to learn better.  He also talks about how eating cbd may help brain function. He touches on managing a busy demanding schedule as in when he was an undergraduate in a difficult Ivy League Biology program while wrestling for one of the top schools in the country. Randy wrestling for Cornell University Randy can relate to our audience because he was a very good high-school wrestler, a winning wrestler at Cornell University (Top Div I program), and also has some competitive experience in boxing and jiu jitsu.  He got his blue belt from Shawn Williams in 2006. One of the reasons this conversation is important is that it give you a window into someone who grew up wrestling, boxing, and later doing jiu jitsu who has been successful in a non-related field.  There are also so practical tips that might help you in combat sports or whatever your chosen field is. Host is Warren Stout (Randy’s brother) ***** Disclaimer*****. None of the statements in this podcast should be taken as medical advice.  Randy’s statements in our causal conversation do not necessarily reflect the opinions, official or otherwise, of the institution he is employed at.  Any statements are for informational purposes only.   The post Neuroscientist / Cell biologist Dr. Randy Stout on learning, brain injuries and more appeared first on Stout Training.

Pat Santoro, Lehigh Head Wrestling Coach, on the Importance of Creativity and More
Pat Santoro teaching wrestling at Stout Training in Pittsburgh   Pat Santoro is currently the head wrestling coach at Lehigh University.  He’s had good success both as a head and as an assistant coach in all of the college programs he has been involved in.  In addition to this he was a 2 X NCAA DI wrestling champion, and had an excellent freestyle / international wrestling career.  He loves wrestling maybe more than anyone else I’ve ever met.  He is more than just a teacher but has been a mentor to me and many others on and off the mats.   Pat has lots of quotable material in this podcast. One of my favorites is “Do the next right thing.” We start out talking about kids going into wrestling and sports in general.  He uses the “sponge” analogy.  Pat goes on to discuss coaching philosophies, the importance and mindset of “play wrestling” and much more.   EVERYONE  can get some good information from this podcast.  If you are a wrestler, combat athlete, jiu jitsu player, submission grappler, mma fighter, coach of any sport, or a parent you’re going to like this interview/conversation.  I”m Warren Stout, one of Pats former wrestlers, and host of the podcast at Stout Training Pittsburgh.
