60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: Do You Have a Story From When You Were Too Young to Remember?
Hello to you listening in Cologne, Germany! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. My baby brother, Paul, is a well-married, well-established adult whom I love dearly. It seems like only yesterday the family of 9 was camping in New Hampshire. One morning the parents parked the family station wagon in a grocery store lot taking Paul with them seated in the grocery cart. Time passed. They returned with the groceries, stowed them in the station wagon, got back in and drove away leaving Paul in the shopping cart in the parking lot. Of course us kids thought this was hilarious and we waved goodbye out the windows. Time passed. Mom looked around asking: where’s Paul? We could barely speak for laughing. One brave soul pointed back in the direction we came. Ever see a station wagon pull a 180 at high speed on a country road? There he was just where the parents left him, calmly looking around at whatever was there. Paul’s sense of serenity has stayed with him over the decades. As has his story.           Story Prompt: Once upon a time you were too young to remember; but, there are parents, siblings, maybe family friends who are all too eager to share a story or three about what happened to you when you were too young to remember. Reach out to them and discover it. What is that story? Who shared it with you? What did it feel like to hear it? Remember to “Write that story!” and say: “Thanks for the memories.”   Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story.   You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic would you subscribe, share with your friends, leave a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: How Might Wile E. Coyote Be Your Role Model?
Hello to you listening in Rome, Italy! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga. One of the most persistently imaginative cartoon characters is Wile E. Coyote. Why? Because he never fails twice in the same way. He keeps coming up with wild, crazy, inane ways to use those ACME products so he can catch Road Runner. That’s why we watch. What will Wile E. Coyote do next? That he never catches Road Runner isn’t the point. The point is that he persists. Do we really want Coyote to catch Road Runner? No. Because as the song goes: “Road Runner, if he catches you you’re through.” And that would be the end of all those wonderful cartoons. Practical Tip: Never underestimate the power of your imaginatively persistent efforts. If someone out there disses them as bad or wrong, well then, you can say: Beep. Beep.     Click HERE for a bonus if you like cartoons.     You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic would you subscribe, share with your friends, leave a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey: What Do You Gain When You Know Your Origin Story?
Hello to you listening in Winthrop, Washington! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga.   An origin story shows up as a moment in time when we were more than we thought we could be. We were faced with this or that or the other thing. Then we made a choice. That choice set us on a path to owning our desire. We can own our desire in so many ways to be a force of good in the world. We can be healers, writers, singers, teachers, creators, and more. When we own our desire we are saying “Yes! This is my story!” All the so-called mistakes, uncertainties, wrong turns, dead ends, and missed chances now make sense. They were part of the process of showing what was not meant to be. Once you have found your very own story, it belongs to you, it’s waiting to be told.   CTA: Either you claim and tell your own story or one will be provided for you. When you’re ready I can help. Reach out to me on Quarter Moon Story Arts website or LinkedIn to set up your free story session.   You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic would you subscribe, share with your friends, leave a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: Why Do We Work to Understand?
Hello to you listening in Meerut, India! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga. The old ones say that understanding is the first step to acceptance and only with acceptance can there be recovery. Why do we work to understand? We work to understand so that we can accept a road to healing our misunderstanding and by healing our misunderstanding we heal ourselves. What do we need to understand? So many things. Here’s one: “People take different roads seeking fulfillment and happiness. Just because they're not on your road doesn't mean they've gotten lost.” [H. Jackson Browne] Question: What is it you’d like someone to understand?    You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic would you subscribe, share with your friends, leave a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! Hello to you listening in Fredricton, New Brunswick, Canada! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga! What do you do when you’re facing the blank white computer screen and there are no words to write, nothing seems worthy of putting down? What do you do when you’re feeling discouraged? The wise ones say, “Encourage someone else.” My sister knew that if she encouraged me with a 2 minute video not only would I feel better but I’d probably share it here to encourage you as well. (Or click this Link.) It might just be what you need to encourage yourself and someone else.   "While the world has been distracted by the noise of all those resistant to change Change has been happening. Empower women and change the world!"   Question: How might you encourage a girl or woman today and change the world?    You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic would you subscribe, share with your friends, leave a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: What Is the Joy You’re Taking in the Making?
Hello to you listening in Perth, Australia! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga.     Recently I read a blog post by my friend and colleague Leanne Gordon. Leanne's Drip by Drop blog posts are designed to be “A daily dose of thinking helping you to make change happen in your work and life.”  Joy In The Making caught my ear.  In brief the idea is that we often arrive at the end of something and wonder why it took us so long to get there. Or, we listen to others who chide us for taking so long. I remember a galpal who moved away a few years before I did. She said, “When you finally move you’ll wonder what took you so long.” Not! What we’re forgetting here is the process of our productivity. Making the journey gets us to the destination. As Leanne writes: “The meaning and joy is in the making.” Story Prompt: I imagine you are making something. What is the joy you are taking in the making? Write that story!  Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story. You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: As We Move Toward Mid-Year What Marks Your Truest Success?
Hello to you listening in Winterwsijk, Netherlands! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories from Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga.   It seems like yesterday we were celebrating the turn of the year. And here we are reaching the midpoint. Maybe this is a good time to reflect on measures of success beyond goals, clients, contracts, income, likes, and so on. Perhaps we can ask ourselves: who did I lift up, set free from their negative thoughts, invite to join in the circle? What did it feel like to take time out for a mindful walk, sit in stillness, write a real note to a friend, or even do something quite frivolous? How did my decision to set aside my self-centered, judgmental attitude make life a bit easier for someone else? When did I bear witness to another’s life? And that’s the point, isn’t it? We are spiritual beings living a human existence and trying our best to walk ourselves and each other back home. Question: As we move toward the halfway point what marks your truest success?      You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey: What Is a Story But a Search for Meaning and Human Connection?
Hello to you listening in Pender Island, BC, Canada! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. I will tell you something about stories. They didn’t come first. They came second. What do I mean? Our oral tradition of narratives, origin stories, creation myths, and so on - up to the present time - came about because we are a meaning-seeking people. Our ancestors looked up into the heavens, saw comets and asked, “What does this mean?” The same with weather patterns, crop failures, upheavals - virtually anything they encountered and did not understand. They created stories to make sense of things, to remember the meanings. They shared those stories with other humans to connect, to bear witness to the lives they were living. And the same is true today. CTA: What would you like to learn about the meaning and power of story? When you’re ready I can help.   You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: If You Can’t See it Does it Exist?
Hello to you listening in Canberra, Australia! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Here on Whidbey Island the Pacific Rim Institute is home to prairie, savanna and forest where PRI grows 50 species of rare native grasses and flowers including camas. Native across the Pacific Northwest, the stunning violet-blue flowers of camas historically lit up prairies, marshes, and oak savannahs. Camas once dominated open clearings maintained by first nations people who carefully tended large grasslands to maintain optimal growing conditions. Bulbs were dug in the fall and pit roasted to break down the inulin into simpler sweet caramelized sugars, providing a staple food for thousands of years. When I visited PRI in early spring there was no camas to be seen. Did they exist? Indeed they did but they had not yet manifested. The bulbs were lying in wait for the right conditions of sun and warmth and rain to bloom. Practical Tip: We tend to think in terms of something existing or not existing. But that is not reality. If you pay attention you’ll know that what you are waiting for is there, it’s hidden, you won’t see it until the time is right, but it exists. Guaranteed!  You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday: What If You Have Nothing To Hold On To?
Hello to you listening in Thune, Switzerland! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Maybe like me you’ve asked for help from a friend who said, “Just tie a knot in the end of your rope and hold on to that.” With enough rope to tie a knot and enough strength to hold on you'll probably be okay. But what if there’s nothing to hold on to? We were high in the cold and snowy Canadian Rocky Mountains. 6 women and 2 guides on an Outward Bound  mountaineering trip. Far above us and out of sight the guides had secured the climbing ropes beyond the cliff edge. In pairs we climbed up and rappelled down the sheer face of a mountain. Climbing up my partner froze midway between the top of the cliff edge and the rocky ground far below. She stammered out: “I can't find anything to hold on to.” Time passed. And then a voice from far above us called out, “Grab it with both hands!” It worked! She got to the top! But how? My partner found the help she was looking for- inside herself. Practical Tip: When you can’t find anything to hold on to, grab it with both hands!   You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: Do or Don’t Do. No Try. What’s Your Story?
Hello to you listening in Fort Collins, Colorado! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Two Old Women by Vella Wallis recounts an Alaska legend of betrayal, courage and survival. Based on an Athabascan Indian legend passed from mothers to daughters of the Upper Yukon Valley in Alaska this tale tells how 2 old women abandoned by their tribe during a brutal winter famine create a means to survive. After being left behind in a snowy woods one woman says to the other, “We may die out here - at least let us die trying.” My prayer goes like this: “One day I will die. Let me die doing - no try.”   Story Prompt: I imagine you have a prayer of your own. Where did it come from? What inspired it? How does it help you? Write that story!  Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story. 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: What Might You Do When You’re Underly Busy?
Hello to you listening in Kelseyville, California! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Maybe like me you have spaces in the year when you are not overly busy. In fact, you might even be underly busy. Perhaps your reaction is to scramble to be productive. But productivity is not always related to action.   What if there’s another valuable way to use the underly busy times?  Amos Tversky, an expert of decision making, wrote, “The secret to doing good research is always to be a little underemployed. You waste years by not being able to waste hours.” [Amos Tversky — An Amazing Man] Practical Tip: What’s the rush? Give yourself permission to experience letting go, to devote time to quietly day-dreaming while giving your wonderfully creative imagination time to be in stillness, show up, and like mmmagic! solve a problem (or 3) when you least expect it!   You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! Hello to you listening in Issaquah, Washington! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Wednesdays on Whidbey and your host, Diane Wyzga. Maybe like me you’re curious about what makes you different. Cultivating our identity helps us to know who we are, where we’re going, what we have to offer. What makes me different is an ability to listen for the meaning beneath the surface of the words, the context that gives life to content, the back-story. I uncover what my clients fear and desire so I can help them arrive at their authentic story. Together we translate the experience of living into a sense of purpose. I believe that my clients know what they need and want to say; it is my purpose to listen it out of them, to help them say it in their own true words making me the only “story doula” I know. 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday: What Can We Do if Silence Makes Us Nervous?
Hello to you listening in Brainerd, Minnesota! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Silence can make us nervous thinking we need to fill the void, but there is immense strength in silence. Think about it. The notes of music make sense because of the silence between the notes. Silence is a space full of power, depth, weight. Silence is where we can hear the many sounds around us, the sounds we are often too distracted to pay attention to: the voice of experience, intuition, truth, all of Creation vibrating around us - we who are alive. Practical tip: Early early in the morning, maybe late late at night or even in the midst of activity, stop, sit still and simply listen. You may hear your heartbeat or your breath, but focus on silence. As you dwell in silence you will feel it penetrate your body and cleanse your being. Now you are in harmony with the Universe leaving you vibrant and connected to the vastly potent wide-open spaces of possibility.   You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday: What Might Apparating Teach Us About Motivating?
Hello to you listening in Savannah, Georgia! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Harry Potter & the Half Blood Prince by J.K. Rowling offers 3 steps for apparating successfully. What is apparition? In the Harry Potter universe where witches and wizards abound apparition is the ability to teleport (magically transport) from one place to another. No one in the real world has this talent; but we can learn from the 3 D’s: 1.  Destination: See clearly where you want to go and fix your mind firmly on that place. 2. Determination: Focus your mind on where you are yearning to go. 3. Deliberation: Feeling your way into nothingness, turn and move with Deliberation. And there you are! With destination, determination and deliberation you, too, can have a most magical motivated Monday!  You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday: How & When Have You Walked Your Way Into the Clear?
Hello to you listening in Guadalupe, Mexico! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Story Prompt Friday and your host, Diane Wyzga. The Camino de Santiago de Compostella is fairly well marked with yellow arrows painted by volunteers and images of scallop shells pointing the way west. But every once in a while - like life - the way is unclear, unmarked, hidden even. You can get lost. I learned this the hard way. Now what? You must stop and listen to your own voice. Silence the noise, the chatter, the distractions about which way to go. Your own knowing will help you out when you ask. And your guidebook. And your experience. Breathe. Quiet. Listen. Choose your way. Walk on. Story Prompt: When have you walked your way from lost into the clear? Write that story!   Practical Tip: The magic of stories is also in the sharing. If you wish share your story with someone or something.   All that matters is you have a story. You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday: How Might We Create Some Freedom From Restraints?
Hello to you listening in Orem, Utah! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Thoughts on Thursday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Maybe like me there are days when you feel you’ve been beating your head against the wall battling barriers and boundaries and getting nowhere. Why bother? It’s just not worth chewing through the restraints. What do I mean? Years ago my therapist said, “Diane, if you were a wolf you’d chew off your foot so you wouldn’t stay caught in the trap.” She was right. Freedom and independence have been hallmarks of my life.   So what do we do on those days when it just doesn’t seem worth it to struggle against the restraints? Practical Tip: Create your own freedom: take a step back, breathe deeply, look around at what you’ve achieved, find contentment in that, enjoy a moment of stillness and let it all go. The restraints will disappear. It works. I know.   You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! I’m often asked where I get my ideas for these daily 60 Seconds episodes. Two places. Hello to you listening in Christchurch, New Zealand! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Time Out Tuesday and your host, Diane Wyzga. Imagine this: a friend asks you to arrange a funeral - for their recently deceased sister - with a church and a priest - in a town out of state. The problem being the friend asking you to do this favor is herself now in hospital having suffered a stroke, can barely speak, recall, or think clearly. My sister, Patrice, is both brilliant and resourceful. She figured out a way to draw bits of information from her friend so she could contact the funeral home, arrange for the church, the priest, and more in the hope that her friend would be well enough to leave the hospital to attend the funeral of her own sister. Question: Where are your end-of-life wishes written down? Who knows them? If you’ve not yet gotten to this task, when will you? And, this might be a good time to think about drafting your legacy story, maybe even your obituary. It’s your life! Don’t surrender the pen to somebody else.  Resource: Before I Go Solutions You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time! 60 Seconds For Motivate Your Monday: How Do We Forge New Frontiers? Willingness in the Face of Uncertainty
Hello to you listening in Farmington, Missouri! Coming to you from Whidbey Island, Washington this is Stories From Women Who Walk with 60 Seconds for Motivate Your Monday and your host, Diane Wyzga.   In 1854 Jacob and Sarah Ebey were 61 and 58 years old respectively (more than twice the age of the average traveler) when they left Missouri and set out on the Oregon Trail. Traveling over 2,000 miles and across the rugged, forbidding Rocky Mountains they made their way to Whidbey Island, Washington. Why leave home and all they knew for this arduous journey in their late years? Because their son Isaac said that the farmland was far better than any in the Midwest making this new frontier home for the families.   You have to wonder about these settlers who were willing to leave the comfort of all they knew unaware of what awaited them on the other side except maybe this: that the lives they had led were not going to be the lives they would lead.   How did they forge new frontiers? I imagine that it took willingness in the face of uncertainty.  Like them, we’re all challenged with forging new paths in our lives; but we can and we will as long as we remember to say “Yes! Despite the odds. Yes! Come what may.”   Question: What new frontier might you be willing to venture into? You’re invited: “Come for the stories - stay for the magic!” Speaking of magic, I hope you’ll subscribe, follow, share a 5-star rating and nice review on your social media or podcast channel of choice, and join us next time!
