Episode 08: Have We Gone Mental?
The answer is yes… yes we have. This episode we get derailed off our original topic and end up really getting into a passionate discussion about police brutality, politics and corruption and a whole lot more. The good news is, even though there were some disagreements, we maintained our civility and at the end of it all came out better informed and still friendly!   Dani Adams - Dani Adams is a PhD student in social work at the University of Chicago’s School of Social Service Administration (SSA). She graduated from SSA in 2018 with her Master’s in social work, and from Roosevelt University in 2014 with a bachelors in Psychology, as well as a minor in Philosophy and a concentration in Children and Family Studies. She has acted as a clinical social worker in public schools and mental health clinics, primarily serving low-income middle school and high school students presenting with depression, anxiety, and trauma. Prior to starting graduate school, Dani was a clinical research coordinator working at the Center for Mental Health Policy and Services Research at the University of Pennsylvania, where she studied the public mental health system in Philadelphia and how to increase the use of evidence-based practices in community settings. Her long-term career goal is to improve the affordability, accessibility, and quality of behavioral health services in low-income neighborhoods in an effort to reduce health disparities for marginalized populations. To accomplish this, her research focuses on how to best disseminate and implement evidence-based programs to youth and families in community settings (e.g., public schools and community mental health centers) and also aims to create innovative financing mechanisms to improve affordability and accessibility of mental health services. Dani is a passionate advocate for RESULTS, a non-profit dedicated to building the political will to end poverty. She leads the Chicago Chapter, and helped establish the first chapter in South Dakota. She grew up in poverty in South Dakota which has fueled her desire to improve health services and safety net programs. She has two cats named Waffles and Biscuits who provide her with hours of entertainment. In her free time, she enjoys traveling, riding her bike around the Chicago, and discovering new music. To view Dani’s published work, check out her Research Gate profile here.
